Chapter Fifteen: Parting of the Ways

"Tessa. It's really her? She's alive? Tessa's alive?" Duncan asked as he noticed Tessa nearby.

"She never died. Not here," Tori answered.

Below them, Tessa ran down the steps to meet up with a man with two children: a boy and a girl.

"Mommy! Mommy!" the little girl called out as she waved at Tessa.

"Are those her children?" Duncan asked.

"Yes," Fitz answered.

"At least she's happy," Duncan replied.

"It's a picture perfect image," Tori stated, "but things aren't what they seem to be."

"What do you mean?" Duncan asked.

"You'll find out."

Tessa greets her children and hugged them, "Oh, I missed you! Oh, boy, I missed you."

She then kissed them.

"Ah, look at her, Fitz," Duncan stated before he started to walk along the railing.

"Whoa, laddie. Where do you think you're going?" Fitz asked, stopping his friend.

"I have to talk to her," Duncan answered.

"Remember, Mac, this Tessa never met you," Tori informed the Highlander.

Duncan noticed the sign on the gate which read: GALERIE NOEL.

DM entered through the gate.

Tessa spoke into the phone, "I would like to talk to Mr. Berry, please. Yes. Yes, okay. Hi! Hi, Dennis. How are you? Great. What about the catalog?"

Duncan saw images of Tessa. Memories of his lover. He saw Tessa sculpting with clay, then he saw Tessa working on a still life.

Duncan wandered through the galerie, looking at displayed sculptures.

"And the printing? Yeah…" Tessa continued talking over the phone.

Duncan then saw a memory of Tessa looking at wire sculpture and then a memory of Tessa putting welding goggles on, hearing her voice, "Duncan. I love you, Duncan."

He then heard himself saying, "I love you too, sweetheart."

That was what he told her before the fateful night he lost her.

Tessa continued talking into phone, "Oh, no. I'm going to be in Rome next week. Mm-hmm. For an exhibition, yeah."

She paused, and chuckled.

He saw a flash of the street outside Pallin's Tudor with two painful memories: Mark shooting Tessa, and then Duncan kneeling over Tessa's body.

"May I help you?" Tessa asked, pulling Duncan from his thoughts.

Duncan turned, and saw her walking toward him, "Um, I was just wondering, um, is this yours?"

"Mine?" Tessa noticed the displayed sculpture before she laughed, "No. This is a Coutelle. Oh, I did sculpt once, but I haven't in years. I wasn't very good."

"You were wonderful," Duncan told her.

"You knew my work?" Tessa asked before Duncan shrugged uncomfortably.

"Weren't we in an art class together at the Sorbonne?" Tessa asked, "It was so long ago. I'm afraid I'm not very good with names."

"Duncan. Duncan MacLeod."

Tessa shook his hand, "Nice seeing you again, Duncan. I'm….."

"Tessa Noel. I know. You know, your hands were like magic," Duncan replied, "Everything you touched seemed to come alive. You know, you once said breathing life into metal was the nearest thing we could get to feeling like God."

"I said that?" Tessa asked.

Duncan nodded sadly.

"Madame, excuse me," a customer walked in.

Tessa continued to look at Duncan, "Could you help me?"

She noticed the customer before telling Duncan, "Oh. Excuse me. I have to go."

"Yeah, I…." Duncan started to say.

Tessa walked over to the customer, "Hi. How are you?"

"Great. Nice to meet you. The wings look beautiful," the customer said.

"How could she do it? How could she give up sculpting?" Duncan asked.

"No buyers, MacLeod," Fitz replied before telling a waiter, "Three Macallan malt whiskies made from Scotland's finest waters, please."

"Somehow I never expected the dead to need anything to eat or drink, Fitz. Even you," Duncan stated.

"What? No more Guinness? My God. That would be hell," Fitz replied before he sent a quick glance skyward, "No more champagne? No more strawberries and cream?"

"That would be bad," Tori quipped.

"Fitz, you're such a….." Duncan started to say before Fitz and Tori vanished.

Tessa entered the cafe, "Duncan?"

"Tessa," Duncan greeted her.

"May I join you?" Tessa asked.

"Please. Sit down," Duncan answered before they sat down.

"It's so strange, but the moment I saw you in the gallery, I felt- I'm not sure what I felt," Tessa stated.

The waiter sets Fitz's whisky on table, asks Tessa in French, "Un boire deshem, madame?"

"Cassis and soda, please," Duncan told the waiter.

"Yes, that will be fine," Tessa replied before she asked Duncan, "How did you know?"

Andres entered the cafe, "Tessa. There you are. Hello, my darling."

He kissed her cheek, and spoke into his cellphone, "Albert, I'll call you right back."

He ended the call before telling Tessa, "The gallery told me that you'd just stepped out."

"Andres, this is Duncan MacLeod, an old friend from the Sorbonne," Tessa introduced the two men to one another, "Duncan, this is Andres Seguy, my husband."

"Oh," Duncan stood up, and shook Andres' hand.

"Pleasure's mine," Andres told him.

"Thank you," Duncan replied before he sat back down.

"College. Great times, eh? Too bad it has nothing to do with the real world," Andres stated before he asked, "What's your field of work, Duncan?"

"I'm in antiques," Duncan answered.

"Antiques. I always wondered who decides when something old and used becomes priceless," Andres replied.

"Time... and passion," Duncan replied.

"Look, I'd love to stay and chat, but we really have to….." Andres stated.

"Oh, yeah," Tessa stood up.

"Why don't you join us later for dinner?" Andres asked.

"Oh, no. I'm sure Duncan is much too busy," Tessa spoke up.

"I don't want to, um, intrude," Duncan replied.

"Nonsense," Andres insisted, "The children are staying with their grandparents for the evening, and it would be great to have an adult conversation for a change."

"All right. I'll be there," Duncan replied.

"Good. Hope it works out. Eight o'clock?" Andres asked before he handed his business card to Duncan.

"Sure. Fine," Duncan answered.

"Wonderful. Tessa?" Andres escorted Tessa out of the cafe.

Fitz and Tori reappeared at the table as the former stated, "You're playing with fire, laddie."

"Let's pick up the children at your mother's, then drive down to Cap-Ferrat Friday night," Tessa stated.

"I've got a million things to do," Andres replied.

"Please, Andres."

"Sweetheart, do you think I like working seventy hours a week? Do you like our life? The private schools, the house in the country, the gallery... which loses money every year."

"Never mind. I'm sorry I brought it up."

"Call Frances at the office and have her set it up. You know I can't refuse you anything."

Duncan took a moment to compose himself, then rang the doorbell. Tessa looked out window before she opened the door.

"Oh. Hi," Duncan greeted Tessa.

"Won't you come in?" Tessa asked.

"I guess I will. Thanks," Duncan answered before he looked around her home, "It's a lovely home."

"Well, you should have seen it when we bought it. It was such a mess. I spent a year putting it back together," Tessa stated.

"Well, it's beautiful. Just beautiful," Duncan replied before Tessa motioned to the sofa behind him, prompting Duncan to reply, "Thank you."

Duncan sat down.

Andres entered the room, "There's nothing wrong with this place that two million francs couldn't fix. How are you, Duncan?"

"I'm well, thank you," Duncan answered.

"Wine?" Andres offered.

"Yes," Duncan took the glass from him.

"Darling?" Andres offered some wine to his wife.

"Oh. Thanks," Tessa replied before she took glass from her husband.

"Cheers," Andres stated before they clinked glasses in a toast

Suddenly, the phone rang.

"I'll get it," Andres answered the phone, "Damn it, Al. The plans have been approved. I'm on my way."

Tessa stood up, muttering to herself, "What the hell?"

Andres ended the call, "The whole thing's falling apart."

"Can someone else go... just this once?" Tessa asked.

"There's no one else," Andres answered.

"What about dinner?" Tessa asked.

"My apologies, Duncan," Andres apologized before telling Tessa, "Duncan's an old friend. I'm sure you'll have plenty to talk about... without me. I'll call you."

He kissed her cheek and left.

"Duncan…." Tessa started to say.

"I should go. It's been nice seeing you," Duncan stated before he started to leave.

"Duncan. It's a pity to waste all that food. I wish you could stay," Tessa insisted.

"I can't," Duncan started to walk away, and turned back, "Tessa... After you left the Sorbonne, what happened?"

"What do you mean?" Tessa asked.

"You loved your work so much. You had such passion for it."

"Passion doesn't put food on the table or a roof over your head. I was naive. I was a schoolgirl when you knew me. Nobody cares about my work anymore."

"I do."

"I've kept a few pieces from the old days. Would you like to see them?" Tessa then asked.

Tessa flipped the light switch of her workshop but the overhead light stayed off.

"Oh, the bulb must be out," Tessa stated, "I don't think I've been in here since Suzanne was born. We talked about turning it into a playroom for the children, but... somehow I couldn't."

Duncan pulled the dropcloth off a sculpture, and looked at it. "Inamorata."

"What did you say?" Tessa asked.

"Inamorata," Duncan answered, "Two lovers destined to be together forever, but forever kept apart by the gods."

"No one knows that. I never told anyone. Not even my husband. How could you possibly know?"

"Tessa, do you- do you believe in... in fate?"

"I want to."

Duncan leaned in as if to kiss her, but he stopped himself, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry."

He felt tears fall down his face. The Highlander clearly had missed his long time lover.

"Duncan. Duncan," Tessa stated before she kissed him.

They made love in the moonlight, on a lounge in the workshop.

Sometime later, Duncan woke up alone on the lounge, got up, wrapped the sheet around his waist, and went over to Tessa, "Tessa?"

Tessa spoke as she was upset, "It was wrong. My husband, my children."

"I'm sorry. I just want you to be happy," Duncan replied.

"Happy?" Tessa sniffled, "I thought I was happy."

Duncan spoke quietly. "Tessa….."

"Go. Please, Duncan, just go," Tessa told him before she left.

"Oh, Fitz, Tori, I should never have gone there. What- Why'd you let me?" Duncan asked.

"Oh, laddie. You didn't create the emptiness in her life," Fitz answered, "You just made her look at it. Sooner or later she was bound to realize what she'd given up. It's her destiny here. Destiny is like a river, MacLeod."

"Oh, no. Come on," Duncan stated.

"Have a little respect for the dead, Mac," Tori quipped.

"As the Spanish say, "Que sera¡, sera¡." What will be, will be," Fitz added before he looked behind him at a female bartender, "A case in point, dear boy."

Duncan looked at bartender, "No."

"I'll be right back," Fitz stated.

"Fitz," Tori called out.

Fitz went over to the bar, "My dear, your beauty lights up this bar like a beacon in a storm."

"Hey, give me a beer. I said, give me a beer!"

Duncan reacted to the familiar voice.

"Oi, ya tart. What's it take to get served in this hole?" Methos demanded.

"Easy, my friend. Can't you see the lady's engaged?" Fitz replied.

"Uh oh," Tori muttered.

"Methos," Duncan muttered in turn.

"Delightful chap," Fitz stated as Methos turned away from the bar towards Duncan.

"What's your problem?" Methos asked.

"Me? Nothing," Duncan answered.

"You're looking at me as if you know me. You don't know me," Methos retorted.

"Maybe it's your sunny disposition," Duncan replied. Methos grabbed his wrist, and pulled the sleeve back, "Looking for something? Hmm?"

Duncan pulled his arm away, "How about two out of three?"

"Let me give you some advice. You keep your eyes to yourself," Methos advised before he left.

Fitz quietly in background spoke to the bartender, "We could find a cozy spot, build a fire, gaze out at the sea. Two days. That's all I ask."

Duncan and Tori went over to bar as the latter stated, "Say good night, Fitz."

"But, um, I was just telling her how she could repay me for saving her," Fitz argued.

"Yeah. Did you forget the part about you being dead here?" Duncan asked before he walked away, "Come on!"

"Ohh!" Fitz kissed the bartender's hand, and joined Duncan and Tori.

"Wait a minute. Are you dead here? I mean, Kalas killed you because of me," Duncan asked, "and Tori lost her head because of me."

"No, no. Here I've been pushing up daisies for two hundred and eighty years," Fitz answered.

"Hmm?"

"Some business about blowing up King George went horribly wrong, and there was, uh….." Fitz explained, "no lummoxing Scotsman there to save my arse, so I had to keep an appointment with a headman's ax. I don't know about you, MacLeod, but that two hundred and eighty years was rather important to me."

"In the world without you, I ran into Lynn shortly after Horton killed her fiance Robert," Tori explained, "I told her everything that she needed to know about immortals and to my relief, she's nothing like her father and she decided to cut off her father."

"What is the meaning of this?" Horton demanded as Lynn approached the house with Joe not too far behind them, standing at the doorway.

"Daddy, is this true?" Lynn asked her father. She shown him different files with all the different immortals and holding a tablet in her hands.

"What are you talking about?" Horton interjected.

"These are immortals that you have killed," Lynn shown him the files, "and these people….. Tori Gordon told me everything I needed to know."

"They are an abomination, Lynn," Horton told his daughter, "They are freaks of nature. Don't you see?"

"What about Robert?" Lynn asked.

"What about him?" Horton interjected.

"I hate to break it to you," Joe chimed in, "but she knows about what happened to her fiance now."

Lynn proceeded to show the video clip of the security camera footage of Horton talking to Robert. The hunter was amazed to see how the video covered each area while he and Robert were talking in the video. They were seen in high quality in the video, clear as day. There wasn't audio but it was clear what was going on: Robert was wanting nothing to do with Horton's mission, and as a result, Horton pushed him off the balcony of the condo.

"That was why I heard screaming that night," Lynn stated, "It was like a horror movie, except this is real life and the fact that you killed Robert…..makes it even more scarier…...and disgusting."

"We had a fight yesterday," Lynn sobbed as she was sitting on the couch next to her father, "I wanted him to take me to lunch, and he put me in a cab and sent me home. He said he had something important to do, and I shouted at him that I was important. Oh, Dad…."

She cried on Horton's shoulder.

"I'm sure it was nothing to do with that," Horton assured his daughter, "He must have lost his balance. Maybe he had been drinking. I'm so sorry, honey. I am so sorry."

The phone rang and Horton answered it, "Hello? So, it's you."

He then eyed Lynn, "Excuse me, honey."

"You killed Robert," Lynn confronted her father, "All because he didn't want anything to do with your cause anymore?"

"How do you even know about what I am doing?!" Horton exclaimed.

"I found these files after you had been stabbed," Lynn explained, "along with the video footage my uncle here managed to get a hold of."

"The girl's good at prodding for information," Joe stated.

Lynn looked around the room in disgust. She couldn't believe this man, who was her father, was responsible for not only killing her fiance, but all those people. She didn't know these immortals he had killed, but she felt these killings were wrong.

"You should realize that not all immortals are evil," Lynn insisted, "Uncle Joe here even acknowledged that."

"Lies!" Horton insisted, "It is all lies! The immortals are a freak of nature! Mistakes! They are all to be eliminated!"

Lynn took a couple of steps back and took some deep breaths. She realized there was no getting through to her father. He was stuck in his way of eliminating all immortals, "So that's it, isn't it?"

Lynn eyed Joe before eyeing Horton, "I'm sorry. I can't support this."

"You're turning your back on me?!" Horton exclaimed in disbelief.

"I don't feel comfortable with this," Lynn insisted, "From what I am seeing, and from what all I've learned, if that's the way you are going to be, I have no choice."

"What are you implying?" Horton asked.

"I have no choice," Lynn answered, "I am disowning you."

She looked at Joe before she looked at her father, "I still consider my uncle family, but you, I don't consider you my father anymore. Never contact me again, ever."

"That's why I've been the immortal who's number one one Horton's hit list," Tori stated, "and I have been since, but thanks to the Defenders, I avoided losing my head."

Fitz sighed, "So, don't worry about us. You worry about your friend Methos."

"What happened to him?" Duncan asked.

"Well, he did what I do all the time... and what all of us do eventually. He…...he fell in love," Tori answered.

1995

"Where are we?" Duncan asked.

"More appropriately, when are we?" Fitz interjected.

"We made a little jump in time, Mac. It's 1995 here, 'round about the first time we met him," Tori added.

"Please- Please, just let me tell them," Methos's girlfriend pleaded.

"What are you going to tell them, Jillian?" Methos argued, "That I am an Immortal and I've been masquerading as a Watcher all these years? They're not going to like that. They are not going to throw me a party."

"Look, they know you. They like you. You'll make all Immortals human to them," Jillian countered.

"Do you think that the Turks didn't know the Armenians were human? Do you think that Hitler didn't know the Jews were?" Methos chimed in, "I have listened to the screams of midwives being burned by women that they had nursed through labor because suddenly they thought they were witches. To admit they were wrong, they would have to admit that they were murderers. It's easier for them to make believe that we're all an abomination and just let the killing go on."

"There's going to be a war, and you have to do something," Jillian insisted.

"I am doing something! I'm staying alive," Methos replied, "It's all that matters in the end."

Duncan watched through the window. Jillian took Methos's hand and they hugged.

"I love you, Jillian. More than I've loved anyone in so long. I can't remember. That's why I told you. But you have to trust me on this one. You trust me?" Methos asked.

Jillian nodded, "I love you."

Methos kissed her.

"And he trusted her enough to buy her a ring and ask her to marry him," Tori stated.

"She was one brave girl, that Jillian," Fitz added.

"What happened?" Duncan asked.

Methos was holding an open ring-box, "Jillie?"

"She was determined to make Horton see that Immortals weren't all abominations," Fitz answered.

"Surprise," Methos stated as Jillian entered the apartment. His smile dropped from his face upon seeing a dreadful sight.

Jillian lead Horton into the apartment, "Oh, darling, please, don't be angry with me."

"What have you done?" Methos asked.

"This is our chance to finally stop the killing," Jillian answered.

"I'm afraid I can't agree," Horton replied before he shot Jillian.

"No!" Methos shouted.

Horton shot Methos as more hunters entered the apartment.

Methos ducked behind the sofa as they all began shooting at him.

Suddenly another man crashed through a window with a yell and mowed the hunters down with a machine gun. Horton ran away.

Duncan, Tori and Fitz continued to watch through window. Methos's rescuer is Kronos, who was the leader of the Horsemen. He walked over to Methos, waiting for him to revive.

"Greetings, brother," Kronos greeted his fellow horsemen.

"Forgive me," Jillian told Methos looking over her before she died.

"Methos became bitter, filled with hate. And Kronos gave him a vent for that hatred. The Horsemen rode again, and they made the Russian mafia look like the Vienna Boys' Choir," Fitz explained.

"But how could that happen?" Duncan asked.

"Isn't it obvious?" Tori interjected, "Kronos wanted to put the Four Horsemen together again, and, uh, you weren't there to stop them."

"But Methos had changed," Duncan insisted.

"Well, without you, he hadn't changed enough. Pity for him," Fitz countered.

"And a pity for Richie," Tori stated sadly.

"What happened to Richie?" Duncan asked.

"Ohh, now that's another sad story," Fitz answered.

Vera Cruz, Mexico 1995

"Well, when you met him, he was a tough kid from the streets who stole because it was easier than working for a living. And he liked the rush. He got busted and decided it was better to skip bail and vacation in Mexico... than face three-to-five years in jail for breaking and entering."

Richie cased the house, pushed open a window, and climbed inside. A gunshot was heard and Richie jumped back out of the window.

"Nothing much else changed, except the way he died the first time."

The homeowner shot at Richie again and then he collapsed at the base of tree and died.

"And when he came back to life, he didn't know what had happened to him," Tori said as she and Fitz stepped out from behind the tree with Duncan.

Richie revived, examing his healed abdomen and got to his feet.

"So he kept on running," Tori explained further, "First it was from the police in the States, so he left the country, thinking he would be safe, then the Immortals came hunting. He ran from city to city...always wondering how they were able to find him. Richie still had no teacher."

Richie ran down an alley, and then sensed the buzz.

"He had no idea of what he was... or why people he had never known were trying to kill him," Tori continued.

Methos stepped into Richie's view.

Paris, 1995

"Methos became Richie's teacher, but he taught him a lot more than how to use a sword," Tori finished, "As Fitz said, it's another sad story."

Richie entered the warehouse, "It's done."

He dropped the briefcase on table where Methos and Kronos were assembling guns.

"Any problems?" Methos asked.

"I didn't think a million bucks would be that heavy!" Richie exclaimed before he opened the briefcase, and ran stack of bills under his nose, "Oh, yeah!"

"I think our friend is a quick learner," Kronos stated.

"Well, I can always spot potential," Methos replied.

Richie laughed.

"Time, I think, for a little... test," Kronos stated.

"Dawson, you think?" Methos asked.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! Who's Dawson?" Richie asked in turn.

"He's one of the bastards who killed our brothers, Caspian and Silas," Kronos answered.

"Hey, whatever you want. I'm your man," Richie declared.

"We want him dead," Methos replied.

Joe entered the apartment, and then looked up to find Richie pointing a gun at him.

"Don't even think about running," Richie stated.

Joe scoffed, "Very funny."

"Get in here!" Richie exclaimed.

Joe walked toward Richie, "You know, you must be, uh, pretty good to break in here."

"Yeah, I'm good enough," Richie replied.

"You sure that safety's off?" Joe asked.

"Shut up," Richie motioned with the gun, "Sit down!"

"What do you want, kid?" Joe asked.

"I said, sit down!"

Joe sat down, "Okay. Now what?"

"Now you die, that's what."

"It's just that easy, is it, kid?"

"Yeah."

"Then how come your hand's shaking like an eighty-year-old with the DTs?"

"Because- Because I hate you."

"You don't even know me."

"You're a Watcher, man. You're one of them bastards that's trying to kill us."

"No. Not me. It's Horton."

"Yeah. Right."

Richie suddenly sensed the buzz as a female voice stated, "What do we have here?"

He and Joe looked to see Tori, Lynn and Jack arriving at the area.

"More immortals?" Richie asked in disbelief.

"Actually, Joe is my uncle," Lynn stated.

"You seem like a charming guy," Tori stated, "Well, um, we are aware of the guy named Methos. The dude you're working with. What's a nice guy like you hanging around with someone like him?"

"Methos is a great man!" Richie exclaimed.

"Yeah, he could've been, but now he's scum, Richie," Joe replied. Richie looked at him in surprise, "Yeah. I know your name. You've been running my guys ragged - across the States, Barcelona, Rome, Marseilles. It's just too bad it had to be Methos to be the one to find you."

"You are an Immortal, Richie, just like me, just like Jack here," Tori wrapped her arms around Richie, "Do you have any idea the gift you have been given? Don't let him turn you into something you're not. You're not a killer, Richie."

She passionately kissed Richie, which he accepted.

"What was that about?" Jack asked.

"What? I like him," Tori answered, "This Richie guy is kind of cute."

"I…..I like you too," Richie slightly stammered.

"You can live forever... or you can kill forever. It's up to you," Joe told the young immortal.

Richie sensed the buzz as Methos and Kronos walked toward him.

"We were waiting for you. Got a little bit anxious when you didn't turn up," Methos told the young immortal.

"He doesn't look happy," Kronos told his brother.

"Is he dead?" Methos asked Richie.

"I'm sorry. I tried. I couldn't do it," Richie answered.

"Not a problem," Kronos replied.

"Come on. You look like you could do with a drink," Methos told his "friend".

"Yeah, I could. Thanks," Richie replied before he followed Methos and Kronos to their car.

They drove to a nearby isolated tree.

Methos got out of car, "Let's do it."

"What's going on?" Richie asked as Methos and Kronos were pulling him out of the car.

Methos and Kronos pulled out their swords.

"It's a reckoning," Kronos answered.

"Oh, come on, man. Just give me another chance," Richie pleaded.

"You're just not the man for the job, Richie," said Methos.

"I'll - I'll blow town, man. I swear! You won't even know I exist," Richie pleaded.

Kronos laughed, "How true."

Methos pushed Richie to his knees, "No weak links."

"Oh, Methos. Please! I thought we were friends," Richie pleaded.

"We are friends," Methos patted Richie's cheek, "Good-bye, my friend."

"Nooooo!" Richie screamed.

Methos beheaded him.

"That son of a bitch. That son of a bitch," Duncan muttered as he saw the whole thing in shock before he went forward, "Where is he?"

"When will you get it through your thick head that you can't make a difference here?" Fitz asked.

"Fitz, where is he?" Duncan asked as he noticed Tori trying to compose herself, seeing what happened to her husband in this world.

"Don't blame me. I'm only the messenger," Fitz replied, "You can't change anyone's fate. MacLeod, if you've got a problem, take it up with the front office."

He looked skyward.

"You take me to him, and you take me to him now," Duncan insisted.

"Come on, Fitz," Tori urged him, "Just do it."

"Oh, well. You asked for it," Fitz replied before he asked, "Now, where were we? Ah, yes. Two years later, Joe is working with the Defenders of the Earth because he's lost the Watchers, and the Horsemen are about to persuade him to lead them to Horton."

Methos drove his van up in front of Joe. "Hey, Joe."

He got out of van. Joe pointed his gun at him. Kronos appeared behind Joe and took the gun from him, and handed it to Methos, who then said, "Long time no see."

They brought Joe to a warehouse and tied him up to a chair.

"Just tell me where Horton is, Joe, and you can go home, but you hold out on me- Well, you don't want to hold out on me," Methos stated.

"So you want me to rat out the Watchers? Why would I want to do that, especially to you?" Joe asked.

"What is it, Joe? You still upset about the kid we sent after you?" Methos asked, "That was a mistake, Joe, and it was a long time ago. Let bygones be bygones. The Watchers were yours, Joe. They were yours, and Horton, he took them away from you. He made you what you are today. Do you like what you are?"

Joe sighed, "At least I'm not a murderer. At least the Defenders gave me hope when I had none."

"What about Horton? How many people has he killed? Surely you want to put a stop to that," Methos replied, "and I'm sure the Defenders won't be able to put a stop to them eventually."

Joe replied with an angry tone, "How many have you killed? If I'm going to pick sides, I'm sticking with the humans."

"Joe. Joe, Joe. I….." Methos sighed, "You and I, we're- we're old friends, but Kronos, he's not your friend. Haven't you got anything for me?"

Joe spat in his face. Methos backhanded him, "This is going to hurt, Joe."

"Trouble? Ahh. Look, all he needs is a little bit of encouragement," Kronos stated.

"We're going to give you one more chance to tell us where he is," Methos told Joe.

"Just try the Yellow Pages," Joe replied.

"Do you really need to be a hero that badly?" Methos asked before he drawn his sword.

They heard a clanging noise sound.

"Maybe there's something here after all," Kronos stated before he went to investigate.

"What's it going to be, Joe? The heart? Or maybe the belly. Perhaps a little off the top here," Methos asked.

Blasters his Methos by his hand. They looked to see the Defenders of the Earth: Flash, the Phantom, Mandrake, Lothar, Atascadero, Sheila, April, LJ, Kshin, Jack, Tori and Lynn all present with swords for Jack and Tori and blasters from the others.

"Looks like your party is over, Methos," Flash declared.

"Do we make our move?" Lynn asked.

"We make our move," Mandrake answered.

"That's what I like to hear!" LJ replied.

Duncan attacked Kronos with a metal pipe, knocked him out, and then turned to confront Methos.

"Who is that?" Kshin asked.

"The guy we encountered before," April stated in surprise.

"I am Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod," Duncan greeted the group.

"Never heard of you," Methos replied.

They began to swordfight, Duncan using Kronos's sword.

"Kill him!" Joe shouted.

Tori went to pummel an unarmed Kronos, "I was wanting to go after Methos, but you'll do just as well."

The fight continued.

Methos pulled out a knife. Duncan blocked it, and punched Methos.

"I've seen that one before," Duncan stated.

The fight continued. Duncan sliced Methos's arm, causing him to drop the knife.

"Kill him! Kill that bastard!" Joe exclaimed.

Tori gutted Kronos with her sword, and then Kronos collapsed to his knees.

"This is for Richie," Tori declared before she beheaded Kronos and took his quickening.

"NO!" Methos shouted in horror. He was the last horsemen remaining.

Tori dropped to her knees as the quickening ended.

"That…..is the quickening!" Jack exclaimed.

"You bitch!" Methos cursed, "You murdered Kronos! I LIKED KRONOS!"

"Yeah, and you're next Methos," Tori replied, "which is what you get for killing Richie."

Duncan gutted Methos. Methos then collapsed to his knees.

"What are you?" Methos asked.

"Ghost of Christmas Past," Duncan answered before he beheaded Methos. Methos's body disappeared. Joe was gone too, so was Tori in that universe, along with Jack and the Defenders.

"You know something?" Tori spoke up, "After Kronos raped me last year, and for them killing Richie, I felt that was justice served, especially me killing Kronos in that world."

"So this is the world without Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod. Rick Gordon and Amanda are dead," Fitz declared, "Joe's about to die. Tessa will drift into bitterness, facing a life without passion. Jedda will also drift into bitterness, having to be married to Prince Krotan of Mongo. The Defenders are at a never ending war, including Jack Banks, Lynn Horton and Tori Gordon. Richie Ryan lived and died a thief, and me?"

He chuckled, "Well, I missed out on almost three centuries of living."

Duncan sighed.

"Now, that's an awful lot of unhappy women," Tori stated.

"Exactly," Fitz replied.

Duncan chuckled, "Oh, Fitz, Tori. I missed the both you."

"Not half as much as I missed you, laddie," Fitz replied.

"I want to tell you something," Tori told the Highlander.

"What's that?" Duncan asked.

"I never hated you for what happened to Jenny," Tori told him, "Never. I forgive you for not only the Keane ordeal, but for my death as well."

"Thank you," Duncan replied.

"Always," Tori replied, "and who knows? You might see me again, but not in the ways you'd think."

Fitz looked up, "But it's time for you to go home now. There's places to go."

"Places to go," Duncan replied.

"Yeah, and friends that need you," Tori chimed in, "including my husband."

"Yeah. I guess," Duncan replied he then hugged Tori, "Good-bye, Tori."

"Good-bye, Daddy," Tori stated.

Duncan felt tears stream down his face, "It's exactly how I felt about you."

"I'll say hello to Tessa for you," Tori said.

Duncan smiled and then hugged Fitz, "Good-bye, Fitz."

"And you make sure it's a long time before you darken my doorstep again. Do you hear me?" Fitz chimed in.

"Mm-hmm. I hear you," Duncan replied.

"Mac, look up," Tori stated.

"What?" Duncan asked.

"Look up, you silly bugger," Fitz answered.

Methos leaned over to Duncan at a nearby hut, "Come on, come on!"

He patted Duncan's cheek.

"Where am I?" Duncan asked.

"What?"

"Where am I?" Duncan asked.

"You're in Mongo," Methos answered, "I just saved your life. I had to get you shot to do it, but you've got to take the rough with the smooth."

"We were fighting, you and I. You killed Richie, then Joe," Duncan stated.

"What are you raving at? Joe is a bit tied up at the moment, so has Richie, and you've been off down the bloody rails. Now come on," Methos stated.

"How long have I been gone?" Duncan asked.

"Only a couple of minutes. What's it matter? We've got to get out of here. O'Rourke's merry men are probably right behind me," Methos answered.

Tom stepped out from behind one of the huts, "Aren't you the smart one?"

He shot Methos, and then pointed his gun at Duncan, "Come on, boy. O'Rourke wants ya alive."


-The-Space-Between-


"Everyone know what to do?" William asked.

"We seal away the portage initiative for good," Daphne answered, "and we help the Defenders and their Earth allies return home."

"The rescue party will consist of Alex Raven, Kyra, the Sutherlands: Nick and Katherine, Reagan Cole," Martha added, "and Jack Banks is leading them."

"That's not all."

The agents turned and saw Abby, Sara and Rachel standing nearby.

"Rachel and my daughter will help you guys with the rescue party," Abby announced.

"Sounds like a plan," Jack replied, "the more, the merrier."

"Then we make our move now!" Jack exclaimed, "Time is a wastin and Earth and Mongo will be destroyed unless we seal away the portage initiative for good."

"Yes, Leader!" the agents all replied.


-The-Space-Between-


"You ever hear of people coming back from the dead?" Duncan asked.

"You're daft! I should just shoot you now and be done with you," Tom exclaimed.

"Then I guess you don't even believe in ghosts, then, do you?"

"Don't try it!"

Methos tapped Tom on the shoulder. Mandrake, Lothar, the Phantom, Baylin, Barin, Castra, Katarina, Aura, Tevrok, Rick, Jedda, LJ, Kshin, Amy and Krotan all arrived at the scene.

"What the hell is this?!" Tom demanded.

"You are getting sleepy," Mandrake used his hypnosis on the henchman, "Now, sleep. Go to sleep."

Tom fell under the spell and was knocked out in the process.

"Impressive," Duncan stated, "and not bad for a ghost, Methos."

"You should see me at Halloween," Methos suggested.

Duncan looked down at Tom, "I think I have a costume for you."

He then looked up at the Defenders and the Mongo allies, "Where's Flash Gordon?"

"As we speak, he is dueling with Ming the Merciless," Barin answered.

"This appears to be the duel of the fates," Baylin added, "This will determine the Flash versus Ming debate once and for all."


-The-Space-Between-


Flash was a part of an intense duel with Ming the Merciless. This was the final stand, and both opponents appeared to be evenly matched at the moment.

"Giving up?" Flash asked.

"Not a chance," Ming answered, "First you lost your wife, then you lost your niece and then your sister. You are willing to die and join them in the afterlife?"

"Very unlikely," Flash replied. The intense duel continued before Flash eventually gained the upper hand and gutted Ming, "That was for Dale."

He then sliced Ming across the chest, "That was for Tori and Janet."

"And this…...is for you," Flash declared, "See you in hell."

With one swift move, Flash beheaded Ming and with that, Ming the Merciless was dead for good. Flash looked at Ming's decapitated head and the pool of blood, smiling in satisfaction. He found the moment bittersweet. Mongo didn't have to worry about Ming anymore, but he felt bad for Aura, Castra, and Katarina.

"They're better off without me," Richie stated sadly.

"Why do you say that?" Lynn asked.

"Why not?" Richie answered, "Everyone I love, they all die. Donna turned on me, and became Carrie Frost because of my immortality as I wanted her and Jeremy to be safe. I snuck into the Tudor House and Tessa died. I didn't listen to my wife about Ahriman, and she died."

"You made mistakes, big deal," Lynn argued, "but no one's perfect."

"If I didn't come into the picture, maybe…" Richie started to say.

"That's enough!" Lynn slapped Richie, "I will not stand here and let you talk down about yourself! Frost brought everything on herself. She's the vindictive bitch who abandoned her son. You had nothing to do with that. Tessa and Tori are dead, but you're not alone. Far from it. You still have people out there who care about you. My uncle cares about you, the same uncle that I changed my last name for to cut connection with my biological father, Amanda cares about you, Adam Pierson cares about you, so does MacLeod. They all love you."

She took a deep breath before she continued, "I care about you too. I may not know you as well as my uncle does, but yeah, I do care."

Richie looked down at the ground, taking the sting of the slap as he was processing what Lynn told him. He then looked up and slowly stood up.

"Thank you," Richie stated, "You helped me through a tough situation, and I cannot thank you enough. Joe would definetly be proud of you."

"Thanks," Lynn smiled, "Now, what do you say we get the heck out of here?"

"I couldn't think of anything better," Richie replied.

He and Lynn hurried out of the laboratory and escaped.

Frost hurried out of the laboratory. She had a wound on her arm, but she was barely able to escape the shoot out. Little did she know her luck was about to run out.

"Too bad MacLeod has met his end," Frost stated quietly, "and it is definitely too bad I couldn't kill Richie Ryan. No matter, the unholy alliance will win. They won't be stopped."

"I don't think so."

"If you are an immortal, give it up," Frost called out, "O' Rourke will win and so will the rest of the unholy alliance!"

Hadea stepped out of the shadows with two Netherworlder guards next to her, "You have no right to talk, Carrie Frost, originally known as Donna Ondrejka. You betrayed your own family as well as your friends, gave up your son to foster care, threatened your ex Richie Ryan and joined this evil alliance. You are truly a disgrace."

"Who the hell are you?!" Frost demanded.

"I am Empress Hadea of the Netherworld," Hadea introduced herself, "You might have been expecting one of the Defenders of the Earth, but they're not your problem, I am."

"What are you going to do?" Frost scoffed.

"I have given that a lot of thought," Hadea replied, "I remembered something Duncan MacLeod told me long ago, and given what he had told me that killing my enemies would make me no better than they are, I decided killing you would be too easy of a fate for you."

Frost scoffed again, rolling her eyes.

"Instead, I will do this," Hadea stated before she motioned her guards and they fired at Frost to where she was paralyzed from the neck down.

"Perhaps a fate worse than death might humble you," Hadea stated, "I'm very sorry it had to come to this."


-The-Space-Between-


"We almost got it!" Daphne announced.

"I can't believe it!" William exclaimed happily, "We are finally getting rid of the unstable portals, and the portage initiative for good."

"This has never been more exciting," Dorothy replied as she typed some stuff, finalizing the program.

"The portage initiative will be closed in 60 seconds," Taylor announced before he asked the rescue team, "Are you guys ready?"

"Ready as we'll ever be," Katherine answered before she looked at Nick, "Look at the bright side, we're going to be traveling on a super fast space ship to Mongo."

"I know," Nick replied with a grin, "I'd never imagined I'd be traveling to space when I married you."

"Neither did I," Katherine nodded.

"The ship is almost ready," Alex announced.

"All right," William replied, "Portage Initiative sealed away permanently in 10….9…...8…..7…..6…...5…..4….3…...2…..1."

Everyone looked at the screen which read: PORTAGE INITIATIVE PERMANENTLY SEALED

Everyone in the room cheered.

"Now we don't have to worry about a possible doomsday," Reagan stated, "What a relief."

"Rescue team," Jack called out to his group, "Let's hurry to the ship! The Defenders, MacLeod and their allies will be needing a ride back to Earth."

Methos noticed "Richie" standing nearby, "Richie, how were you able to….."

He realized what was going on as he couldn't sense a buzz, "Wait a second. You're not Richie!"

"How clever of you to figure that out, Subject Methos," "Richie" replied.

"Ah, I should have known that there was a shapeshifter in existence," Methos quipped.

"Too bad you will not live to tell," "Richie" declared before he shot down Methos, temporarily killing him. He got out the bastard sword and prepared to take Methos' head, "Such irony."


-The-Space-Between-


"Hey!" Richie shouted as he and Lynn emerged out of the shadows, stopping Klytus from taking Methos's head.

"He looks like you," Lynn stated.

"Yeah, but not for long," Richie replied before walking over to his impostor. He drawn out his sword and the two Richie's dueled as Lynn looked on.

Then, Richie gutted Klytus, "No one impersonates me except…..me of course."

He beheaded his fake self before looking at Lynn, "Shall we get back to your uncle?"

"I couldn't think of anything better," Lynn replied before they heard Methos gasping, revived.

"Are you okay, Methos?" Richie asked.

"Yeah," Methos answered, "but how do I know you are really Richie Ryan?"

"Tori and I first known about you when I was possessed by an evil entity," Richie answered, "You were sad when first my daughter Jenny, and then Tori died. I was being mopey for far too long, but thanks to Lynn, I'm starting to find peace for Tori's death."

"That's a relief," Methos replied before he, Richie and Lynn left the area.


-The-Space-Between-


"He's been gone a long time," Amanda stated.

"Yeah, well, maybe that means he got away," Joe replied.

"Maybe it doesn't."

Joe sighed. Two figures appeared walking toward them from the train tunnel. Amanda sensed the buzz. Mandrake walked backward in front of Duncan, pointing gun at Duncan while hiding his face from O'Rourke.

"It's about time," O' Rourke stated.

"What, did you miss me?" Duncan asked.

Mandrake then stated with a fake Irish accent, "You cheeky sod! You show a little respect."

The Phantom, Lothar, Rick, Jedda, Amy, LJ, Kshin, Sheila and Atascadero all joined in the fight and fired their guns. Aura, Barin, Castra, Tevrok, Baylin, Katarina, Krotan and Vultan all joined seconds later.

Joe stated in a hushed tone, "It's Mac."

Amanda added with her own hushed tone, "And the Defenders."

Lynn, Richie and Methos joined the fight as well.

"Lynn!" Joe exclaimed with relief that his niece was okay.

"Joe!" Lynn exclaimed in turn as she went to free her uncle from his bondage.

"Step away from Amanda, Elektra!" Richie exclaimed as he held out his sword.

Cain stepped away, drawing her sais. Moments later, Flash arrived with Ming's decapitated head.

"Well I'll be," Lothar stated, "He finally did it. Flash Gordon finally defeated Ming the Merciless."

"You gave your word, MacLeod," O' Rourke stated.

"Let's just say I had a change of heart," Duncan replied.

O'Rourke chuckled in turn.

"Now I hope you can be flexible about this because we can do this the old-fashioned way without any outside interference," Duncan stated.

O'Rourke tossed the katana to him.

"You'll pay for what you did to my God," Cain declared.

"Khordas was no God, and now it's time for your suffering to end," Richie stated, "Um, from what the IUA told me about you before I was kidnapped."

Methos unlocked Amanda's handcuffs, "I should have shot that bastard when I had the chance."

"Thanks," Amanda stated as her eyes were glued to the fight.

As O'Rourke came out from a nearby hut, Amanda called out a warning, "MacLeod!"

O'Rourke joined Duncan on top of an abanoned hut as fight continued. Duncan kicked O'Rourke backwards over another hut, glanced around, and ran after him.

Richie dueled with Cain. He kicks her backwards over another hut, glanced around, and ran after her.

"Come on," Methos told Joe, Amanda and Lynn.

"I think Duncan MacLeod and Richie Ryan have those two under control," Jedda stated.

"We can still watch them take on their enemies," Rick replied.

They followed the four Immortals farther into the mountain. Duncan and Richie moved cautiously into open area surrounded by snow. O' Rourke went after Duncan while Cain went after Richie. They all locked blades and Duncan tossed O'Rourke against one of the cars. He brought his katana down, hitting the side of the mountain as O'Rourke ducked. Richie followed suit with Cain, but she also dodged. They four continued to fight on and around the mountain. Eventually, Duncan beheaded O'Rourke while Richie beheaded Cain. The double quickening began.

Amanda, Lynn, Joe, Methos, Rick, Jedda and the Defenders all watched the powerful double quickening.

"That's a quickening?" Lynn asked.

"That's a quickening," Joe answered.

Amanda ran to Duncan as the quickening ended, "Oh, baby. Oh, I thought I'd lost you."

Methos, Joe, Lynn and the Defenders also arrived at the area. Atascadero and Mandrake helped up Richie as Lynn and Amanda were helping up Duncan.

"Never," Duncan declared as he looked at his friends and allies, "Never again will I throw away my life so foolishly."


-The-Space-Between-


Richie looked at a paralyzed Frost. He wasn't sure to feel pity or not, but he couldn't help but to think that she had brought this on herself. She was now paralyzed from the neck down. He didn't celebrate this, nor did he feel sad.

"Hello down there!"

The heroes looked on to see a large ship landing on Mongo.

"What do we have here?" Castra stated.

Jack stepped out of the ship with Katherine, Kyra, Sara and Rachel all in tow.

"Anyone need a lift home?" Rachel asked.

"Sure," Joe answered, "We would be more than glad to get off of this ice box."

He glanced over at Aura, "No offense, of course, your Highness."

Aura smirked, "None taken."

"The portage intitative has finally be shut down for good," Jack announced, "Now there won't be any more random portals, and Earth and Mongo are safe."

"That's even more good news," Flash replied.

"I see that Ming the Merciless is finally dead," Jack noted the blood on Flash.

"You have no idea," Flash replied, "My archenemy is finally dead after so many years."

Jack then noticed the expressions from Sheila, Aura, Castra, Krotan and Katarina, "Are you guys going to be okay?"

"We'll be fine," Aura answered, "Thank you."

"I know what you're gonna say," Sheila added, "Ming was our father."

"That's true," Castra chimed in, "but he was never a father to us."

"I know I won't miss him," Krotan stated, "In fact, I cannot wait for Mongo to be ruled the way it was supposed to be ruled, thanks to my baby sister."

Katarina glanced at her twin brother in awe, "Me?"

"Who else?" Krotan grinned, "I couldn't imagine anyone more suited for the role. Besides, I don't think the people of Mongo are going to trust me anytime soon."

"Give our people time," Zyna assured her son, "They'll understand you are not like your father."

"I hope so, Mother," Krotan replied.

"I have faith that they will," Katarina replied, "all in due time."

"I guess that settles that," Jack replied.


-The-Space-Between-


"Are you okay?" Kyra asked as two IUA agents wheeled away the paralyzed Frost.

"I'll be fine," Richie answered, "Thanks."

"She was your ex?" Kyra asked.

"Yeah," Richie nodded, "All things considered, I'd rather her be doing anything else. I wouldn't wish paralysis on anyone, much less my worse enemy. At the same time, she did bring this on herself."

"You are absolutely right," Kyra smirked.

"Thanks to Lynn, as well as Mac," Richie glanced at the blonde woman talking to Joe nearby, "I feel more at peace with Tori's death than I was before."

"I'm glad," Kyra smiled and nodded.

"We should be heading back to Earth," Mandrake stated as he walked over to the pair.

"Gladly," Richie smirked, "I cannot wait to return to Earth."

"What exactly happened in your vision?" Kshin asked, curiosity in his eyes. Hadea, Rick and Jedda returned to the Netherworld and the agents also returned to their homes.

"In my vision, Fitz died 280 years prior," Duncan explained, "Amanda, now a heartless murderer, killed her rich husband, but she was then killed herself by the corrupted Watchers, the Hunters. Tessa had a husband and children, but she was forced to sacrifice her art and passion. Joe and Lynn joined the Defenders after Rick was killed during the Hall of Wisdom incident, and the Defenders weren't quite the same after that. Jedda was forced to marry Krotan after leaving the team. Tori and Jack were also a part of the Defenders and along with Lynn, they grew fond of Richie, who was recruited by Methos to join the Horsemen, but when he couldn't bring himself to kill Joe, Methos took his head. Methos and Kronos were also about to kill Joe unless he gave up the Watchers to them, but the Defenders came to Joe's rescue and both Lynn and Tori ambushed Kronos before Tori took Kronos' head to avenge Richie. Then, Tori ended up killing Horton. Their war was likely capable of consuming the world."

"Me? A Defender?" Joe stated in surprise, "That is hard to believe!"

"I don't doubt that is possible," Lynn grinned, "After all, the possibilities are endless."

"I have no doubt that it was real," Flash stated.

"My thoughts exactly," Mandrake chimed in, "I can imagine visions like that existing."

"Heck," Flash chimed in, "There was a time I thought I was going to have an experience like that, but I had my team, my family, they pulled me through."

"It appears to be the closure we've been longing for," Richie stated.

"I agree," Duncan nodded, "knowing that my fallen friends such as Fitzcairn, Tessa and Tori all were happy before they died."

"I'm glad you got that closure," Sheila stated.

"I never held my biological father's death against you," Lynn told Duncan, "I understand that you did what you had to do. It did hurt, but I made my peace with what happened."

Duncan sighed with relief before Flash spoke up, "That reminds me, MacLeod. April wanted me to send you a message."

"What would that be?" Duncan asked.

"About forgiveness," Flash answered, "She said maybe in the distant future she will forgive you, but not for years to come."

Duncan nodded, not surprised by that statement. After all April and Tori were cousins, almost sisters. He then told the Defenders, "I want to thank all of you for helping me out whenever I needed it. Words cannot describe my gratitude towards all of you. I will always be grateful to you Defenders, more than you can ever imagine."

The Defenders looked at the Highlander in awe, touched by what he said.

"The pleasure has, and always will be ours," Mandrake replied, "Remember that."

"Always," Duncan replied before he walked over to Methos.

"You know, I don't know who or what you are, Methos, and I know you don't want to hear this - but you did teach me something," Duncan told the old man, "You taught me that life's about change, about learning to accept who you are, good or bad, and I thank you for that."

Methos smiled as Duncan walked to Joe.

"I can't imagine my life without you, Mac. The fact is I don't want to," Joe stated before he hugged him.

Then Duncan walked over to Amanda.

"I love you. I do," Duncan told his lover.

"Really?" Amanda asked.

"Yeah. You make my heart glad. You always have," Duncan answered.

"Mac, for what it's worth," Richie stated as the Highlander walked over to him, "I'm glad to have you as my teacher. I really mean it."

"And I'm glad you became my student," Duncan replied, "I always saw you as a son."

"And I always saw you as a dad," Richie stated before he hugged his teacher, "I love you, Mac."

Duncan left the barge, more confident in his life. He then departed into the night for an unknown future.
