Defenders of the Earth: This Is Their Side Story

On the creation of the original This Is Their Story:

"A long time ago I wrote (and rewrote…) some sort of an episode guide about DoE. Over the years I had created many new characters and I did start to include those in the story (I know, OCs are not very popular, but I only wrote for myself back then, so I didn't care). I think the whole thing went on for several seasons until I ran out of ideas for new "episodes." Years later I decided to reread the whole thing and started to think about actually writing some of the scenes described in the episode descriptions. This went on for a while... and someday I decided to put them on as a series of scenes written for my version of the show."

Ming and Phantom try to force their children to come to their senses but Krotan refuses to listen to his father and Jedda gets pressured so much that she refuses to listen to her father either and even tells him that she will not be the next Phantom. This leads to some conflict for Flash because Krotan is his wife's brother but at the same time, he understands completely what Phantom is going through.

Chapter 3: Mongo Is Burning — Part 2

"I suggest that you turn this craft around," Ming told Kit as he sat at his side, hands bound together by metal cuffs.

The Phantom ignored him, driving on, whipping through Mongo's empty streets. They were heading straight to a prison cell, where Ming would reside for a number of years. The Phantom was here to ensure it happened, to see that Ming didn't flee en route. The Brotherhood knew Kit would do the job; Kit was more skilled than the royal guards.

Ming made a cocky, disturbing chuckle — the kind that the Phantom never wanted to hear. "You haven't been told about the rebels' plan. They knew that you'd never go along with it. That's the real reason you were sent away."

Kit kept staring at the lengthy road.

"Do you not wonder why the streets are vacant? A certain event is occurring now. It's being broadcast all throughout the city — which is rather pointless, since everyone's there."

They passed a store full of video screens — Mongo's versions of TV sets, shaped like ovals, hung like lamps. Every television had the same broadcast. It looked like a wedding was taking place.

Kit turned back to the street again, keeping his focus on the path ahead...

Then he slammed down on the heavy break.

The hovercraft roared to a sudden halt.

Ming didn't budge as the vehicle shook. His gaze was cast on the crimson sky, a look of calm arrogance across his face. "I'll say it again. And do try to listen: we both know I'm going to escape from jail, so unless you want me at your holiday dinners, I strongly suggest that you turn around."

Kit whipped the wheel, turning the craft.

This has to work, Sheila thought, watching her brother from the second row. Krotan and Jedda were about to wed. Things would be peaceful on Mongo now.

Ming was gone. The war was 'over.' But stopping her father wasn't good enough. They had to show people that a change was here. Putting Jedda Walker on the throne would help.

She wrapped her hands around Flash's own. He looked tense too as he sat at her side.

All of a sudden, Amy shot up from the chair on her right. The girl eyed a railing with a stunned expression.

"What's wrong?" Sheila asked, rising as well. Then she noticed, and started to quiver. Rick was holding a sniper rifle. April stood a few yards away from him.

Amy stepped forward, clenching her fists. Her head began glowing with a mystical spark.

The weapon was tugged right out of Rick's hands. Amy had apparently snatched it away.

Flash stood now, his face aghast.

Rick appeared stunned, but not for long. He pulled a hand blaster from a spot at his back, aiming it down at the ceremony.

That was when April grabbed onto him.

The doors at the back of the room flew open. A gold vehicle had crashed onto the scene — driven by an angry-looking Kit. Ming was smirking in the seat beside him.

Shouts of panic spread across the crowd. Krotan and Jedda pulled away in shock.

Sheila trembled, drawing back. Then she looked up at the rail again. April and Rick were locked in battle. They had to be stopped before they killed each other.

Flash began moving toward his kids as well.

She took his arm, halting his steps. "I've got them." She turned to the ruckus. "You get this."

He made a slow nod, moving toward Kit.

"Amy," she said. "Give me a lift."

Amy concentrated her power again.

Sheila hovered up toward the balcony. She had a closer look at the skirmish now. The kids didn't seem to be holding back.

Rick threw a high side kick at April.

She dodged it and put a palm thrust on his chin.

He stumbled back, then blocked a cross, drilling his knee into her gut two times.

April choked, backing away.

Rick advanced on her with a hardened glare. Sheila had heard that they'd fought as kids, April always having a narrow edge.

He threw an uppercut, which barely missed.

April sidestepped and grabbed hold of his back, grunting as she picked her brother into the air.

Sheila realized what was going to happen. Not a German suplex, she thought with worry. That would almost certainly end the battle, and maybe send Rick into surgery.

Rick wrapped a leg around one of his sister's, halting the slam momentarily.

"Stop!" Sheila cried, dropping onto the perch, free from Amy's power now.

April eyed Sheila while lifting Rick, her red face laden with surprise and rage. Then she paused, and put Rick down, shoving him away with both of her hands.

"It has to proceed," Flash insisted. "They're going to get married for the greater good."

Kit wasn't having any part of that. He wouldn't let his daughter be used like this, nor would he allow her to wed this boy. "I won't have Jedda turned into a tool," he said while attempting to reach the two.

Flash held his arm. "It's not like that. They're marrying for love."

Kit was appalled. "You truly believe that she loves Krotan?"

"When was the last time you talked to her?"

Kit glanced off. It'd been a while. Her need for independence divided them. Jedda had requested a bit of distance. She'd claimed that she wanted to 'find herself.'

As he'd suspected, that was crap. All she'd really needed was to find a bed, a bed where Kit couldn't see her sleep — a bed with Krotan's waiting arms. Jedda was confusing lust for love.

"Krotan has changed," Flash assured. "Kit..." he whispered, eyeing him closely. "You think I'd allow this if there was danger — if Jedda was actually being used?"

"Father," Jedda said, stepping forth, her long white dress moving on the ground. She took one of Krotan's hands in hers. "I love this man. I'm doing this."

Kit took a breath, shaking a bit.

April, Rick, and Sheila appeared, walking on the scene as Amy watched.

Then Kit turned to his daughter again. "What of our family's legacy?"

She closed her eyes, then opened them. "I'm sorry," she muttered. "This is my path."
