Chapter 90: Epilogue XIV
Commander Abigail and her daughter Sara stood on opposite sides of a hospital hall.
Every few minutes, one of Ming's victims was wheeled by in a chair, wearing a series of bandages or a signed cast.
Sara folded her arms and leaned her back to the wall, eyeing her jacket and dark brown pants. "It's bad enough that we've got Ming to worry about, but now a member of our own family is causing trouble as well."
Abigail was dressed similarly to Sara. She lowered her gaze and eyed the floor in shame.
"I'm sorry. I know he's your father, but Grandpa Jonathan is a disgrace to the Gordon name."
"You'll get no argument from me. Not anymore." Abigail wondered again where her father had escaped to.
"Did you give him legal authority to take a group of soldiers to Mongo?"
"No, I didn't."
Sara nodded in satisfaction. "Then these days, that counts as an offense. He took it upon himself to break the rules, and 32 people paid the price." She shook her head slowly. "A jury's going to fry him." Sara pushed herself off of the wall. "I'm sending word out around the world. I want that guy found."
Rick heard a knock on his door in the mansion. "Come in."
Kristina entered, and saw him sitting in bed. "Are you all right?"
He nodded, looking her over in surprise. "The people to be concerned with are those soldiers in the hospital."
"I realize that," Kristina said. "At the same time, I also realize that the last few days have been difficult for you, given all that's happened within your family."
Rick flinched a little. He hadn't expected such empathy from her. "I'm okay," he said, turning to stare out the window. "My grandpa Jonathan's been losing it for years, so no surprise there. As for my parents flying up to space to fight Ming..." Rick shrugged. "I've watched them do that ever since I was a kid. I'm used to it by now."
She leaned against the doorway, letting her stare wander as she folded her arms. "When I was a child, I sometimes fantasized about my parents having adventures such as those."
Rick eyed her curiously. "Were the two of them together when you were growing up?"
"They separated when I was 10."
"What kind of work did your father do?"
"He was a technician on a space station. My mother actually encouraged me to be like him." Kristina paused as the memories came. "But once I learned about her ties to the Sky Band, I was always more intrigued by her side of the family."
He studied her in fascination. "Where's your father now?"
"He's still a technician, but he works on Earth. I spoke with him recently."
Rick fell quiet while staring at her.
"What is it?"
"Nothing." He looked away. "I just notice how devoted you sound, whenever we talk about the Sky Band. Sometimes I wish that you were as passionate about this team as you were about that one."
Kristina frowned a little, feeling awkward.
A long silence lingered over the room.
"Perhaps someday I will be," she said.
