Chapter 93: Vacation
The Present
"You really didn't have to come," Rick said, gliding the helicopter over the vast blue waves.
"I'm beginning to wish that I didn't," Kristina replied. "We've been at this for a while now." She scowled. "Are you sure that this is the right place?"
"According to the witness," Rick insisted. He gazed outward, seeing nothing but water. "But I'm beginning to think there might have been a mistake."
She eyed him curiously. "If you find Jonathan, what are you going to do?"
"I'm going to bring him in."
"But what if he resists? Judging by all that you've told me, he's a dangerous man. And he's probably armed himself as well." She paused a moment, letting her words sink in. "If a fight broke out, could you bring yourself to shoot him?"
Rick scowled a little while looking out at the sky. He'd been trying to avoid thinking about this.
Sensing his tension, Kristina swung her gaze forward as well. "Don't worry. If it comes to that...I'll do it for you."
He glanced at her, looking surprised.
"Shooting a family member is a painful experience." She closed her eyes a second. "Believe me, I know."
Rick studied her in confusion. He had no idea if Kristina's offer was something to be grateful for.
Her gaze grew tense. "What's that out there?"
Upon turning his head, Rick saw something that looked like a star. It began to grow larger as it sped toward the vehicle. His eyes widened and he yanked on the controls.
A wide laser struck the helicopter, sending the vehicle down amidst a trail of smoke.
Knowing that they had no time for questions, Rick immediately went into survival mode. "Kristina! Grab your parachute!"
Kristina scurried about as the vehicle shook, trying her best to remain standing.

A fair distance away, Jonathan Gordon stood aboard a small white boat, holding a laser cannon upon his shoulder. He didn't know or care who was in the helicopter. All he knew was that it was a COE chopper, which meant that the pilots were enemies now. He took his seat and sped away, leaving the helicopter to its fate.

Rick aimed the vehicle toward a small island, then abandoned the controls and secured a parachute of his own.
Night had fallen across the area, and Rick and Kristina were sitting at a fire on the beach.
Kristina tapped away at her phone. "It's no use. I can't get it working." She angrily threw it into the ocean.
Rick watched the device drift away, then threw a somber look at the fire. After searching for hours, he couldn't find any people or buildings on the island. It appeared that he and Kristina were completely alone.
She looked over at his hand blaster. "How many shots do you have left?"
Rick shook his head. "Maybe about 12. I didn't figure I'd need a lot of ammo for this mission."
"Neither did I," she said, eyeing her own weapon. Then she looked back at Rick, staring at him. "How are we going to get out of here?"
Rick sighed. "I don't know." He fell quiet for nearly a minute. "Right now, we've got to focus on the present."
Kristina looked down at her weapon again. "It'll be easy to make fires as long as these are working. After that..." She found her words trailing off.
Rick peeled one of the bananas that he'd brought back. "We can search for more fruit tomorrow."
"And where's the spring again?"
"Back that way." He studied her curiously. "Are you any good at fishing?"
"No. Are you?"
He shrugged, then fell onto his back and spread his arms.
Kristina placed her hands on her knees, and found herself feeling quite vulnerable all of a sudden. "Rick," she muttered. "Just how long do you think we'll be here?"
