Chapter 94: Faithful
Several Years Ago
Hadea entered her throne room and took a
seat on her chair. She tried to heave the tension away with a sigh. No crown was
present atop her head. She was ruler here, but still a teenager. It didn't feel fitting to wear the headpiece yet.
An older woman stepped forth, kneeling down before her queen. "Prince Tristan has arrived, highness."
Hadea felt a nervous tingle spread across her body. She rested her arms on the chair, and composed herself. "Show him in."
Moments later, a golden-haired boy appeared before her throne. He was dressed in a doublet and a silver robe. "We meet again, my most lovely queen."
Hadea smiled, feeling a rush of excitement. She was used to compliments about her appearance, but they seemed to mean more when they came from him.
Tristan opened a long jewel case, revealing a glittering necklace made of diamonds and gold.
Hadea's eyes lit up, and she trembled where she sat.
"I thought you might like it," he said with a smile. After placing the gift on Hadea's neck, he stepped down to admire her once more. "A beautiful necklace for a beautiful woman."
Hadea beamed while looking down at her present.
"It would complement your crown quite nicely." He noted the absence of her usual headpiece. "Might I ask why you're not wearing one today?"
Hadea was still swooning over the necklace. "I...I..."
"Out with it. Silly girl."
She couldn't help but chuckle under her breath. Few people had the nerve to tease her that way, and even fewer could actually make her giddy. To her surprise, she seemed to like how he had that effect on her. "This is the first time you've seen me without my crown. I wanted you to meet the girl behind the title."
Tristan's face suddenly grew more serious. "I can think of no better day to do that, because I have something very important to say to you." He lowered himself to his knees.
Hadea froze in surprise, her eyes widening.
"Rather than becoming the king of my land, I wish to become the king of yours. Today, I formally declare my desire to become your chosen mate."
The Present
Hadea lay beside the Phantom, watching him sleep. She rolled onto her stomach and interlocked her hands, crossing her legs over her bare back. Just as she was settling into a peaceful meditation, the device beside their bed quietly sounded off. Without looking, she reached over and pressed the button. "Yes?" A messy lock of hair fell across her face.
"You have a visitor, highness." The nobleman spoke slowly, as though he couldn't believe what he was saying. "King Tristan is here."
Hadea froze. Her mouth opened a crack. "What did you say?"
The man paused, then spoke up again. "King Tristan is here, highness."
She fell silent, staring at the wall.
"Highness?"
"Allow him in. And tell him that I'll be out to see him shortly." Hadea stared at the communicator, then pressed the button again. She rose and sat on the side of her bed. After a few seconds, a voice arrived just over her shoulder.
"Who's Tristan?" the Phantom asked.
She held her stare forward, hiding her shaky expression.
Tristan stood before Hadea's throne, eyeing her and her husband as they sat side by side.
Right away, Hadea found Tristan just as handsome as before. She suddenly wished that the Phantom wasn't present. She and her husband knew each other too well. He'd detect every emotion that Tristan evoked.
Hadea wondered why that was even a concern. She assured herself that after all this time, she couldn't possibly still have feelings for this man.
Tristan was dressed in an elegant doublet. He smiled while looking up at the empress.
She immediately found herself questioning that grin. Could it be that he detected something in her stare?
"It's been a long time, highness," Tristan said.
"Indeed it has," Hadea replied.
"Look at you. You've become an empress."
Hadea let herself grin a little. "And look at you. You've become a king."
The Phantom began glancing back and forth between them.
Tristan produced a gold jewel case. "Of course, I couldn't come without bringing a gift." He opened the box and revealed a glittering necklace.
Hadea quivered a little, but tried not to show it.
Tristan glanced at the Phantom. "May I?" he asked.
The empress turned to her husband, eyeing him with caution. The last thing she wanted was to make him uncomfortable.
The Phantom studied Tristan, then nodded politely.
Tristan reached around Hadea's neck, pausing to enjoy the soft touch of her skin.
The Phantom eyed him closely the entire time.
Hadea blushed while sitting between the two men.
---------
Tristan became charmed by her familiar features. He recalled how everything complemented her innocent stare: the thin locks of hair; the perfect nose; the rounded flesh creeping out of her gown, flowing up and down every time she breathed; and the smooth skin that ran from her thighs to her toes. No woman in the galaxy was more beautiful — not in his eyes, or in countless others...and especially not in Hadea's own. But while millions of men admired the empress, only one man, it seemed, could actually have her.
Tristan paused, eyeing the Phantom. Then he stepped down from the throne and studied Hadea. "A beautiful necklace for a beautiful woman."
---------
As Tristan's flirting continued, the Phantom folded his arms and looked elsewhere. Seconds later, he felt Hadea's hand resting upon his. He glanced at her, wearing a look of surprise.
"Now that we've been reacquainted," she said, "tell us what brings you here today, Tristan."
Tristan's eyes grew more serious as he stared at Hadea. His face softened with a deep affection. "I was merely hoping that you and I might find the time to talk — alone."
The Phantom lowered his eyebrows. He didn't like the warmth in Tristan's tone. He tried reminding himself that they weren't in high school. At the same time, he kind of wished that they were. That would make it easier to release his frustrations.
"I regret that I do not have the time today," Hadea said. "There are many matters here which require my attention."
The Phantom winced in surprise again. As far as he knew, Hadea's schedule was clear. He wondered why she was looking to avoid Tristan. Did she somehow sense her husband's discomfort? Or did she not trust herself to be alone with this man?
Tristan frowned in disappointment. "Understandable, highness. Life as a king keeps me quite busy as well." He lifted his chin. "I hope that we will have another opportunity."
Hadea licked her lips, holding quiet.
"Well then..." He smiled. "Until we meet again." Tristan turned and exited the throne room.
Hadea stared after him, then turned to her husband.
The Phantom quickly rose from the throne. "I have a class of soldiers to train."
She reached for him as he was leaving, feeling nothing but air pass throughout her fingers. Moments afterward, she held her hands together and looked down at her lap.
As Hadea was returning to her bedroom, she heard the sound of rapid footsteps rushing down the hall. The empress turned around with a confused glare.
Tristan sped toward her with a wild expression.
Two guards stepped forth and aimed their blasters.
Tristan tackled one man and knocked him unconscious, then stunned the other with his victim's weapon. He pushed Hadea into her room, then quickly closed the door behind them.
"What are you doing?" she asked.
Tristan held quiet while searching throughout the chamber.
Hadea scowled. "Your attack did not go unnoticed. I'm monitored all day." An alarm began blaring throughout the Golden Palace. "More guards are on their way here this very moment."
Tristan looked about nervously, then found a certain button. After he'd pressed it, a thick force field rose around the doors outside — similar to the one in Hadea's old home.
He let out a sigh. "That should keep us alone."
"Why are you doing this?" Hadea asked.
He reached out and held her hands.
Hadea began to feel a familiar tingle.
"I want you back, Hadea."
Her lips parted, but she found herself at a loss for words.
"You have your choice of any man that you want. I ask once again to be the man that you choose." He stroked her hands. "You and I belong together, we always have."
Hadea stared into Tristan's affectionate eyes.
"I know that you still feel something for me. I could see it today when we spoke in the throne room."
She took a deep breath, then looked away.
Tristan slowly pulled her closer. "Don't deny what you truly feel. Don't deny what's meant to be." He turned her face back toward him.
Hadea met his gaze with her own.
Tristan leaned in, drawing his face to her lips.
Hadea held still until the last moment, then pushed him aside when he was caught off-guard. She reached over and touched the button he'd pressed, quickly deactivating the barrier outside.
Tristan froze, looking shocked and confused.
"I'm meant to be...with my husband," Hadea said. "I am not an unwed woman, Tristan. I have a companion, and I love him."
He frowned. "Hadea, have you any idea how long I've waited for this chance?"
"You had a chance with me before. You lost that chance when you were unfaithful — something that I and my husband will never be to each other."
A slew of Hadea's men rushed into the room. The Phantom ran in right alongside them. He watched as the guards subdued Tristan, then moved to Hadea and asked if she was all right.
The empress nodded, leaning her head into her husband's embrace.
"So you let him go?" the Phantom asked.
"He lives in a small kingdom outside of my dominion. I did not wish to leave his people without a ruler," Hadea said. "He's been warned to never return here."
The Phantom sat down beside her on their bed. "It seemed that he meant a lot to you once."
"He was a handsome boy who offered companionship — something that I longed for during my youth. Earlier today, for a few brief moments, the girl in me remembered how charming he once was." She turned to him. "But I am not a girl anymore. I am a woman, and my heart belongs to the man I love."
The Phantom smiled, then drew her close. "And mine belongs to you, Hadea."
