Ming the Merciless is the central protagonist of Defenders of the Earth and of several fan-created tales. He is introduced as a tyrannical ruler who relocates temporarily from his home planet of Mongo to Earth, where he initiates many destructive schemes while attempting to steal the world's natural resources. Ming is assisted by hordes of battle machines known as ice robots, along with his super computer Octon, and the robot captain Garax. He is the father of Prince Krotan, Princess Castra, and, presumably, an older daughter named Aura. The tale Defenders of the Earth: This Is Their Story presents Hadea and the original character Sheila as Ming's daughters as well. In the fanfic Dynasties, he is removed from power on Mongo, but makes numerous attempts to reclaim the throne.
