The Royal Family of Mongo is featured in Defenders of the Earth and developed further in fan-created tales. The members are usually presented as the longtime enemies of the Gordon family and the ruling clan of planet Mongo, headed by the tyrannical Ming the Merciless. In DoE, two of Ming's children, Princess Castra and Prince Krotan, are depicted as turning on him in various ways. DoE and certain works of fan fiction also present the possibility of the Defender Jedda Walker joining this family, either willingly or reluctantly. The eldest child is assumed to be Princess Aura, who is not seen in the TV series. The tale Dynasties identifies Zyna as the mother of Aura, Castra, and Krotan. Zorelda is a former queen who ruled prior to the ascent of Ming's family.

Marzena's tale Defenders of the Earth: This Is Their Story chronicles a Royal Five, with Krotan, Castra, Aura, Hadea, and the original character Sheila all presented as Ming's children. Stories such as Sailor Moon Defenders focus on these players and other royals. Author Rosehill has also developed this clan. Though Ming is portrayed as corrupt, not all members of the family are believed to be.
