Race: Human

Skills: Mechanics, computer science, combat

Family: Gordons

Rick Gordon is a character introduced in Defenders of the Earth and developed further in fan fiction. Raised in an adventurous family, he is a talented, level-headed inventor who finds himself affected by a number of conflicts throughout Earth and space, eventually choosing to help defend his world. Amid his journeys, he grapples with various personal issues and meets occasional romantic interests.

Upbringing

Richard Gordon is the son of Dale and Flash, space explorers renowned for their battles against the tyrant Ming of planet Mongo. Ultimately, Flash and Dale's exploits left them with less time to be parents than they preferred. In some tales, it is suggested that a younger Rick was monitored largely by other family members while his mother and father were engaged in strife. According to Dale, this led to Rick becoming a reserved, isolated boy who surrounded himself with machines and took a great interest in computer science.

In the fanfic Dynasties, Flash expresses regret over the way that Rick was raised, though Rick reveals that he harbors no ill feelings toward his parents, and has a great amount of love and admiration for them.

In certain fanfics, Rick has a sister named April and cousins named Sara and Tori, all of whom were raised similarly to him and eventually showed interest in their family's line of work.

Defenders of the Earth

As is the case with other characters, it is revealed that there are numerous Rick Gordons in multiple dimensions. In the fanfic Defenders of the Earth: This Is Their Story, which takes place mainly on Earth Z, he is presented as an emotional young man who accompanies his parents and sister on a trip to space that leads to them being captured briefly by Ming, resulting in the loss of Dale. Following Dale's burial on Earth, Rick and his father become dedicated members of the Defenders of the Earth, a small global-defense group. He later begins a romantic relationship with Amy O'Connor.

The Earth D tale Dynasties follows Rick as he struggles to accept a separation from his ex-girlfriend, Jedda Walker, and eventually gains a motherly figure in Queen Hadea, along with a new romantic interest in reformed Sky Band member Kristina Graf.

Sailor Moon Defenders explores his bond with Jedda and expands the story presented in the DoE episode "The Hall of Wisdom" by having Rick experience a transformation that empowers him with mystical abilities. He soon becomes a target and grows conflicted over whether to make life-changing decisions. He also appears on Earth N, featured in a crossover story with the Batman franchise (a nod to the fact that Rick's DoE voice actor, Loren Lester, also voiced Dick Grayson in Batman adaptations). In this tale, he and his family are revealed to be related to the Gordons of Gotham City. In Defenders Chronicles: Highlander, he and Jedda eventually marry and have two children, Dale and Chris.

Demeanor

Rick is introduced as a friendly, level-headed, hard-working boy. In fan fiction, his tumultuous romances make him moody on occasion, though he generally tries to avoid reckless behavior. Like his friend LJ, he is known for his great dedication to his lovers, teammates, and family members.

Skills

Rick is renowned for creating futuristic gadgetry and weaponry which assists the Defenders on their missions. Trained extensively by Dale and Flash, he is also a talented pilot and a skilled combatant.
