Defenders Chronicles: Highlander

By AmandaDoE

Chapter Eleven: The Hunters

Tori typed her latest discoveries out.

"You seem to do really well with research," Richie stated with a smirk. "What are you looking up now?"

"Finishing my report on some ancient stuff, elsewhere in the galaxy."

"The galaxy?"

"Yes, our agency covers that as well as the Earth."

"That'd be interesting  to see space," Richie noted.

Tori perked up upon feeling the buzz. Moments later, she heard two voices talking from outside the room.

"Immortal?" Richie asked.

"Yes," Tori nodded before she picked up her sword, "stay here."

"Oh come on," Richie groaned, "I can take care of myself."

"I know you can," Tori smirked, "but you I think it's best if you steer clear if it's a dangerous immortal."

"Right," Richie rolled his eyes, "because I might get arrested if I help someone in danger by that immortal."

"Can we not bring that up?" Tori asked.

"Sorry," Richie replied.

Moments later, Tori left the room and arrived at the main room where a man with curly, brown hair was about to leave the barge.

"Hold it!" Tori armed her sword, prepared to fight him, "you are not going to hurt Duncan MacLeod or his friends!"

"Wait a second," the man raised his hands, "you're immortal too?"

"Yeah," Tori answered, "who are you and what are you doing here?"

"Tori, it's all right! We're all on the same side here," Duncan spoke up as he arrived at the scene, "this is my friend Fitz. Fitz, meet Tori, she's basically the eyes and ears in helping me out."

Tori put back her sword, "Oh, you're a friend."

"Yeah," Fitz nodded before offering a hand to shake, "nice to meet you, Tori."

"Likewise, Fitz," Tori accepted, shaking his hand, "sorry about the misunderstanding. You can't take any chances here."

"I understand," Fitz replied, "now, how about some tea?"

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Tori took a sip of the tea given to her, with Fitz and Duncan enjoying tea as well.

"Wow," Tori complimented, "this is good."

"Mead," Fitz noted, "the honeyed nectar of the gods. I haven't tasted this since King Richard's day. Where on earth do you find it?"

"Darius brews it himself," Duncan answered.

"He does a really good job," Tori nodded with a smile, "and I usually drink my tea cold."

"Oh, Brothers Darius," Fitz replied, "Well, he hasn't lost his brew master's touch."

Tori allowed the two men to catch up as she was thinking about the recent events. She wondered how many immortals were out there in existence, and how many were good friends with Duncan? Should she be worried in regards to the evil immortals?

"One immortal goes missing," Fitz said, pulling Tori from her thoughts, "granted, it could be one of us took his head, but three? Where did they go? What happened to the bodies?"

"Wait, what do you mean," Tori asked, "wouldn't they be buried after losing their heads?"

Fitz shook his head, "Not in this case."

"Have you spoken to them recently?" Duncan asked.

"Yeah, except Thackery," Fitz answered, "We were due to meet in Dublin on the day he disappeared. He said he had something to show me, something he never seen before."

Tori glanced at the two men, listening intently.

"You know," Duncan replied, "that's strange. I spoke to Darius the other day. He said he'd had a dream about Thackery."

"Don't tell me he still thinks he's having dreams that foretell the future?" Fitz looked surprised.

"Oh," Duncan assured him, "it was probably a throwback from his misspent youth."

"Did he say what it was about?" Tori asked.

"Ah, this and that," Duncan answered, "It was mainly about his death."

The three looked at each other for a moment before hurrying back inside the barge.

"You don't think it's sooner rather than later, yeah?" Tori asked.

"We better not take any chances," Duncan answered before he dialed a few numbers on his phone. He listened to the phone ringing for a little bit, before realizing he wasn't there, "He's not answering."

The three immortals exchange a look before they left the barge and drive in Duncan's car to the chapel. They arrive, and step out of the car to look for Darius.

"I don't feel him," Duncan stated.

"He's not here," Fitz said.

"That can't be right," Tori replied.

"He's always here," Duncan added before he walked into the chapel, with Tori following him. Her eyes widened in shock upon seeing the chairs knocked over on the floor.

"Who could have done this?" Tori gasped. She eyed something that a part of her wished she didn't; it looked like a decapitated body. It looked like the body belonging to Darius. She cried out in horror as she tapped Duncan's arm to get his attention. Tori clasped her hands to her mouth in shock at the sight.

"Darius!" Duncan screamed as he hurried to his friend's body, "Darius!"

A short time later, Fitz arrived to help Duncan and Tori pick up the knocked over chairs.

"He must have put up a tremendous fight," Fitz stated, "Yes. The world will truly be a darker place without you, my friend."

"I didn't believe his premonition," Duncan stated sadly, "I just...never thought he'd...no one's to know what happened here."

"Sorry, gentlemen," Tori told the men, "the IUA has to be informed about this. It might be an enemy that had done this to our friend."

"The IUA?" Fitz asked, confused.

"The agency Tori works for," Duncan answered, "they've helped us a few times."

"Pierre, it's Tori," Tori spoke through her phone, "I need a C unit at St. Joseph's chapel. We got report of activity."

"Roger that, Tori," Pierre replied, "What happened?"

"Another immortal activity," Tori answered, "this time, a good friend of ours was killed."

"How long ago was it?"

"I don't know," Tori glanced at Duncan and Fitz, "How long has it been?"

"I don't know," Fitz shrugged his shoulders.

"Around the other day since that was when I last saw him," Duncan added.

"There's not much you can do at this point," Pierre replied, "except to give your friend a proper burial."

"And we will," Duncan nodded, "we'll give him a decent funeral."

"I am very sorry for your loss," Pierre told the group before the call ended.

Tori glanced over at Duncan and Fitz, who were continuing getting the chairs back where they were. Tori rejoined in helping them moments later.

"You know," Fitz spoke up, "this doesn't make any sense. This is holy ground. No immortal would kill him here."

"Somebody did," Duncan interjected.

"But who?" Tori asked.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"I can't believe he's gone," Tessa said after Tori, Duncan and Fitz informed her about Darius' untimely death.

"Yes," Fitz replied sadly, "he'll be sorely missed. He was one of the best of us. I made some notes of my conversations with Thackery. They are back at the hotel. They're not much, but..."

"It's a start," Duncan replied as he put his coat on.

"I'm so sorry," Tessa offered her condolences before asking, "Do you have any idea who?"

"No," Duncan answered.

"Yo, my friends, what's happening?" Richie greeted the group as he entered the barge before noticing Fitz, "Oh, company."

"Hi, it's nice to meet you," Richie greeted the man, "I'm Richie."

"Hugh Fitzcairn," Fitz shook Richie's hand.

"Fitz for short," Tori added.

"Pleasure," Richie replied before telling Duncan, "You are not going to believe what happened to me today."

"A hem!" Tori cleared her throat. Richie then noticed everyone's somber expressions, "What's going on here? What's with all the long faces? What happened, did somebody die? What's the story?"

Tori sighed before leaning forward and whispered in Richie's ear, "It's Darius. He was killed."

Richie looked at Duncan, who nodded, confirming the statement. Richie looked around sadly before quietly saying, "I'm sorry. Look, is there something I can do? Let me...let me do something. Let me help you."

"Your intentions are most honorable, young man," Fitz assured him, "This is best left to Duncan and myself."

Richie and Tori watched as Fitz and Duncan left the barge.

"All right, okay. It's, uh, it's your situation," Richie replied before telling the women, "I never thought one of the good guys would lose."

"That's how it goes sometimes," Tori replied sadly. Tessa only remained quiet.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Tori looked at the symbol Duncan managed to take a picture of, "Glad you decided to use my technology?"

"Yeah, yeah," Duncan rolled his eyes. As he was talking with Tessa, Tori glanced at the symbol that was on the now deceased Hunter's wrist. It was blue in color, and the shape of the tattoo was unique to say the least.

"We should have never split up," Duncan told his lover, "I can't believe I fell for that, Tessa. It's the age old rule: divide and conquer."

"Maybe they're working for some government," Tessa suggested as she was working on a sculpture.

"I bet they're not IUA," Tori retorted, "because they are aware of immortals to an extent."

"Yeah, well," Duncan replied, "that doesn't explain the tattoo."

He slammed a book shut, "Damn, I can't find that symbol anywhere!"

"That man chose to die instead of talking to you, Mac," Tessa stated, "I'm scared."

"Well, you should be!" Duncan replied.

She glanced over as Tessa cut her hand on the sculpture. Tessa hissed in pain, and blew on the cut.

"Let me have a look at it," Duncan told his lover, "That's a nasty cut."

"Yeah, damn," Tessa replied, "it's bleeding."

Duncan got out a first aid kit to help his lover.

"Maybe they're working for an immortal," Tessa suggested as Duncan got out a band aid for her.

"Yeah, maybe," Duncan replied as he dug around in the kit.

"But who?" Tori asked.

"No, that can't happen," Duncan perked up a moment, "Darius was in a church. Even the most evil of us wouldn't desecrate holy ground. It looked as if they were searching for something in the rectory."

"What?" Tessa asked.

"I don't know," Duncan answered.

Tori sent an email to the IUA with the picture of the tattoo, "Hopefully, the agency might be able to get information regarding this symbol."

"Hope they might be able to help out," Duncan replied.

"I hope so too," Tori nodded. She joined Duncan in tow on deck, leaving Tessa by herself.

Tori looked up as Richie arrived via his motorcycle and walked over to them.

"You know," Richie spoke up, "I've been thinking about this...Fitzcairn had meetings with three immortals and they all disappeared, right?"

"Maybe he led them to Thackery without meaning to," Duncan stated.

"Wait," Richie asked, "Fitzcairn came here. He didn't go to Darius. Why didn't they go to him?"

"They did," Duncan answered, showing Fitz's pipe.

"Ah man," Richie replied, "what's..."

"Look," Duncan spoke up, "I don't have time to explain, all right? I think the answer's back at the rectory."

He hugged both Tori and Richie, "Take it easy, all right?"

"Okay," Richie replied.

"Sure," Tori nodded.

"Look after Tessa for me," Duncan told the two.

"We will," Richie replied before asking, "Mac, there's one thing though. If these guys are regular human beings, and they can't sense you immortals, how do they know when they've found one?"

Duncan didn't answer as he left the barge. Tori then looked at Richie and said, "They have their own methods, but I'm not sure what it'd be."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Duncan entered the rectory, and he picked up the tea pot from the shelf, examining it. He was having memories of his good friend Darius.

He put the tea pot back before remembering meeting Darius at Waterloo.

Then, Duncan looked around, and rifled through belongings on a desk. He then sat down by the chess board, remembering another time he spent with his friend Darius, which was more recently.

He then walked over to a stylized metal globe, gave it a spin, then looked up and saw a piece of MacLeod tartan stuck in niche wall. He removed the loose stone, reached in, and pulled out an old book. On the inside of the back cover was a faded symbol, the same symbol the hunters were donning, "He knew."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Tori met up with Richie as he left the antique store.

"Are you okay?" she asked.

"Yeah," he answered, "um, just things going on as usual."

He got a helmet on before he handed a helmet for Tori, "Hop in."

"Really?" Tori asked as she grasped the helmet. Richie nodded. The pair drove off.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Duncan looked around as he entered the antique shop. He walked over to one of the hunters who was present in the room. He trailed the man, who pretended not to pay attention to him.

"Nice day," Duncan greeted the man while following him, "What do you want?"

The man looked at him before continuing to ignore him.

"Excusez-moi," Duncan spoke in French, "Que voulez-vous? Parlez-vous francias?"

No answer.

Duncan then spoke German, "Sprechen sie Deutsch? Deutsch? Mein Herr, sprechen sie Deutsch? Nein?"

No answer.

Then, Duncan spoke Italian, "Si parla italiano? Italiano? No?"

He then proceeded to speak Russian, "Vy govarite Porusskii? No? Uh..."

Finally he spoke Chinese, "Ni – Shou – Jong – Wen – Ma?"

Suddenly, Duncan was attacked by a man weilding a machete, along with several others. He fought them off and got out his katana. All this commotion caused bystanders to react close by.

Another attacker sprayed mace at Duncan, causing him to scream in pain, going down in the process. While he was fighting the men off, He noticed Richie and Tori arriving and helping him with the men attacking him.

The group of men retreated as they realized there were too many witnesses. Tori and Richie hurried to Duncan's side.

"Are you okay?" Tori asked.

"Yes," Duncan nodded before asking, "Why'd you come back?"

"Well Mac," Richie answered, "I'd like to say I sensed you were in danger, but the truth is, there's this really cute blonde who works in the antique store."

Tori chuckled as she glanced at her friend.

"Great," Duncan replied, "I never thought I'd be thankful for your libido."

With that, the three met up with Tessa back at the barge, and talked over a spaghetti dinner.

"This book holds the key to what's going on," Duncan said as he held an old book, "Darius put my clan colors on it, so I'd find it."

"What's it say?" Tessa asked.

"Well, I'm not certain," Duncan answered, "but most pages have been destroyed in some kind of fire. The ones left are handwritten in ancient German."

"But you speak German," Tessa replied.

"This is primitive Teutonic," Duncan explained, "well before my time. It's a book on some kind of mythology."

"What kind of mythology?" Tessa asked.

"It speaks of, uh...battles, gods, and...immortality," Duncan answered.

"It's a book about you guys?" Richie asked.

"Written over a thousand years ago?" Tessa added. Tori examined the book as well.

"What should we do?" Richie then asked.

"Well," Duncan answered as Tori handed him back the book, "I have to spend a little more time with this book."

"You want Tori or myself to do something?" Richie asked. Tori glanced at him for a second before glancing at Duncan and nodding at him.

"Yeah," Duncan answered, "Hold down the fort."

"All right," Richie nodded before asking, "You want company?"

"No thanks," Duncan answered before leaving the barge.

"What's it like for him, Tess?" Richie asked.

"What do you mean?" Tessa asked in return.

"To have a friend for two hundred years and then..." Richie elaborated on his question. Tori sighed sadly.

"I don't know," Tessa answered.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Fitz looked around his surroundings. After he was taken by these mysterious men after a scuffle with them with Duncan helping him, he had been chained up hand and foot between two stone pillars.

"Hey, what do they think they're playing at...Dungeons and Dragons?" Fitz called out, "Hello?!"

A group of men walked in and took seats in chairs in front of him.

"You killed Darius," Fitz confronted the men, "and you took Thackery and the others. What do you want?"

He looked on as the men said nothing.

"I know my countenance is pleasurable to the eye," Fitz continued, "but can't we discuss this? You'll find me a friendly sort of chap when you get to know me."

The lead man turned and nodded at another man holding a crossbow.

"Damn you," Fitz muttered before the man fired a bolt at him before everything faded to black.

The next thing he remembered, Fitz found himself facing the lead man.

"So you are one of them," the man stated.

"You weren't sure, were you?" Fitz asked, "It was a test. What if I'd been mortal? You would have murdered an innocent man, you ruthless bastard."

"Where's the book?" the man asked.

"Who are you working for?" Fitz then asked, "One of us? Is that your game? How much is he paying you?"

The man then slapped him and then asked, "Where's the book?"

"Book? What book?" Fitz asked.

"The fifth chronicle," the man answered.

"The fifth chronicle? What are you talking about?"

"Don't lie to me. Darius had it."

"Now look," Fitz replied, "Do I look like a fellow who's in any position to lie?"

Then man choked him as he said, "You know, you really should do something about that temper of yours...cause one of these days, it's going to get you into terrible trouble."

"I've often wondered how much pain an Immortal could bear," the man stated, "before he went...mad."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Tori glanced over at Richie as she was back on the computer.

"So, you found Fitzcairn?" Richie asked.

"Yeah," Tori answered, "MacLeod is on his way to rescue him right now. Hopefully, it's not too late."

"Here's hoping."

"And IUA is going to back MacLeod up just in case he needs it," Tori stated, "better late than never, I suppose since they haven't helped out much with this case."

"Didn't they tell you who the men were?" Richie asked.

"Yeah," Tori answered, "Mom said they were Hunters, people who were set on eliminating all immortals, the leader of this group of men we're dealing with, and the same group who killed Darius, would be James Horton."

"Why would they want all immortals eliminated?" Richie asked.

Tori shrugged before asking through the communicator, "Are you in position, MacLeod?"

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Duncan arrived outside Horton's hideout. He heard Tori through the ear piece communicator.

"I'm ready, Tori," Duncan answered, "about to make my move."

"Be careful," Tori cautioned him, "there's a Hunter your way."

Duncan noticed a man leaving the car, taking out a cigarette. He arrived behind the man, "Need a light?"

Moments later, he knocked out the hunter before heading in the hideout.

"Time to make your move!" Tori instructed, "Subdue the Hunters, but don't kill only if it's necessary!"

"I got you," Duncan replied before throwing a knife, which killed one of the hunters.

"MacLeod," Fitz asked as he was trapped in the guillotine, "what kept you?"

Duncan was fighting the hunters who came his way. He managed to lure one of the hunters after him, "I'm over here."

He took on the hunter on the stairs, "It's not easy, one on one, is it?"

"Hey!" Horton yelled at one of his men, "guillotine!"

"MacLeod!" Fitz called out.

Duncan threw a nunchak, knocked out a man heading for the guillotine. Horton shot Duncan with a taser. Duncan reached into his coat, pulled out his katana and cut the taser wire, "Is that how you killed Darius?"

"I'm unarmed," Horton answered.

"You hate us," Duncan spoke up, "but you expect us to behave honorably? Why is that?"

"When you kill me," Horton assured him, "others will come to continue what we begun."

"I'm not your enemy," Duncan assured him, "This isn't about mortals. We have our own fight! Don't you understand?!"

"We always understood," Horton answered, "We will never be dominated."

"No one wants to dominate you," Duncan assured him.

"Liar!" Horton exclaimed, "We know about the Gathering!"

"Do you sense evil in me?" Duncan asked, "Talk to me! Tell me what you know!"

"It's about power!" Horton declared, "There is nothing greater than power of man! Nothing! You must die...all of you!"

He was about to swing Duncan with an axe.

"Freeze!" a voice demanded. Duncan turned to see a woman armed with a group of agents.

"Mister Horton," the woman commanded, "I order you to stand down!"

"MacLeod!" Fitz called out again.

"Mister MacLeod," the woman told Duncan who had Horton and his remaining men at gunpoint, "you may go and help your friend."

Horton ran away.

"Hey, get back here!" the woman demanded.

"Let him go," Duncan told the woman, "something tells me this is not the last we'll see of Horton."

"As you wish," the woman nodded as she had her agents to stand down, "Stand down."

"What took you so long?" Fitz asked, "This thing makes me nervous. Get me out of it."

Duncan released Fitz from the guillotine.

"The women of the world will thank you, my friend," Fitz stated.

"And you are?" Duncan asked.

"My name's Janet Elisionne," the woman introduced herself, "you might know my daughter."

"Tori?!" Duncan exclaimed in surprise.

"Yes, my daughter told me about your friend," Janet nodded, "I am very sorry for your loss."

"Thanks," Duncan and Fitz replied in unison.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Tori and Richie waited at the deck for Fitz, Tessa, and Duncan.

"I wonder what it's like for Mac to have a friend who he's known for so long?" Richie asked.

"I'm not sure," Tori shook her head, "I am kind of dreading it because I'm now immortal too, and people I love will eventually die."

Richie gave her a gentle touch, "Hang in there, Tor. It'll be okay."

Moments later, they joined Duncan, Tessa and Fitz for a memorial for Darius at the barge on deck.

"Fifteen hundred years ago, you led an army of barbarians," Duncan spoke his eulogy for his friend, "You disbanded your army and spared the city, but you broke a promise to yourself. To march west from the Ural mountains until you'd reached the sea."

He took the lid off the urn, and squatted at the edge of the barge, "Travel on."

Duncan reached into the urn, "Go where you never went."

He scattered the ashes into Siene, "To the sea."

Duncan emptied the ashes into Siene, "I'll miss you."

While Tori was watching the memorial service, she had no idea she was holding Richie's hand and was taken aback upon realizing what she was doing.

"Sorry," Tori muttered as she broke the hold.

Richie looked at her awkwardly. "It's okay. As a matter of fact, I kind of enjoyed it."

"Really?" Tori asked.

"Really," he said.

They held hands again.
