Defenders Chronicles: Highlander

Chapter Seventy-One: Transition To Marriage

Tori was keeping her mind preoccupied by beating on a punching bag to give in to sleep, contrary to what Richie was doing. She had a hard time sleeping because she had been thinking about the whole entire year. It started with Duncan being affected by the Dark Quickening, and it ended with her fighting Zorelda to save her fiance after she kidnapped him.

Richie wasn't faring much better. As a matter of fact, he was the one who was nearly beheaded by his own teacher. He felt betrayed and realized this was a part of the game. Tori managed to keep him together to some extent. He had taken heads of some immortals, but she had managed to cool him off when he was at his worst. After the ordeal with Zorelda, Richie had somehow managed to make amends with Duncan, but still felt he needed to be distant with him.

One final swift kick knocked the bag off the chain, causing it to land on the floor. Tori panted as she looked down at it.

Suddenly, it turned into Ming. She screamed, throwing herself onto him and beating it roughly.

"Go ahead and kill me, but what good will it do for you?"

Tori paused and stepped back. Felicia uttered those words to her before she took her head, leading to her first Quickening.

She had Duncan and the whole situation on her mind, and remembered the conversation she and Richie had with Joe before they left Seacouver for the year long tour, traveling the Earth and the galaxy.

"He was going to do it," Richie told Joe, "he was going to take my head."

"He probably would have done so had it not been for you," Tori added, "and Mac probably would have taken my head too after that. He was ruthless."

"You knew he couldn't help it," Joe tried assuring them.

Tori took a deep breath, trying to believe it. If this was a Dark Quickening as the myth had it, chances were Duncan was corrupted.

On the other hand, Richie shook his head, "If you weren't there, I'd be dead."

"But that wasn't Duncan MacLeod," Joe insisted.

"Then who the hell was it?" Richie interjected, "Where is he now?"

"Yeah Joe," Tori added, "where is MacLeod?"

"He's on a tramp steamer. He's halfway to Europe," Joe answered.

"Look, Richie, Tori," Joe glanced at his two immortal friends, "you guys might want to spend some time on holy ground. Sort all this out."

"Seriously?" Tori slightly scoffed.

"Sort this out," Richie rolled his eyes, "oh man, the guy I trusted..."

"We trusted," Tori added in.

"He tried to kill us," Richie continued.

"Richie," Joe began.

"No," Richie interrupted, "the reason doesn't matter. It was him. It was Duncan MacLeod. You know what's funny? All this time, I've been thinking all this whole 'There can be only one' thing, I'm thinking that's just talk. I'm thinking there's no way MacLeod would ever come for me, or Tori. I didn't believe it. I couldn't believe it."

"A part of me felt the same way," Tori nodded in agreement.

"Now," Richie looked right at Joe, "now we do."

He left the bar moments later. Tori had a plan in mind. She wasn't going to let Richie know just yet, or Joe for that matter.

She handed him a piece of paper.

"What's this?" Joe asked.

"My email," Tori answered, "if Duncan MacLeod does happen to come around, let me know. Maybe then, hopefully, I can bring Richie around."

"If there's anyone that can bring him around," Joe smiled as he accepted the paper, "I'm pretty certain that would be you."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Richie sighed. He was reflecting on recent events, including last year. He had forgiven Duncan thanks to Tori encouraging him to do so, even after the events of the Dark Quickening and the ordeal with Shapiro and Galati, but he was still haunted by nearly being beheaded in nightmares, even after being rescued from the witch Zorelda.

Speaking of which, he reflected on the witch kidnapping him after he proposed to Tori. He briefly thought he was going to end up dead like Tessa after being imprisoned, albeit beheaded, but he knew better. The witch ended up having her monk place him in a never ending sleep spell and Tori kissed him to wake him up after she took Zorelda's Quickening, something related to Snow White or Sleeping Beauty. Richie would never be able to live that down.

"Richie?"

He turned and saw his fiance.

"What's wrong, Tori?" Richie asked.

"We have company," Tori answered as they both sensed the Buzz. She looked out the window, "I think it's MacLeod."

Richie joined Tori's view, and he grabbed his sword, "Let's go."

The two hurried outside, their respective swords in hand.

They looked over to see Duncan standing before them, as Tori suspected as they sensed the Buzz again.

"Mac," Tori greeted the Highlander.

"Looking for us?" Richie asked.

"Look I came here to congratulate you two on your engagement," Duncan replied calmly. Richie only nodded.

"Mac, you already told me that last month when we were on our way to rescue Richie," Tori stated.

"Thanks," Richie replied before he took a deep breath and replied, "Look, I told you I've forgiven you, but I'm still haunted by what happened when you were under the influence of the Dark Quickening. It has scared me, even now. I try to forget, but it appears that forgiving and forgetting are two different things."

"He has have nightmares," Tori acknowledged her fiance's statement, "and I suspect it was the Dark Quickening, even after Richie's forgiven you."

"Thanks to you," Richie gave a small smile before giving Tori a kiss. Duncan gave a small smile himself, "I don't know what I'd do if you weren't there to talk me out of doing anything stupid, and thanks to you, I have managed to forgive Mac for what happened."

"I hope you two have a wonderful wedding whenever you have it," Duncan told the couple, "if you still have your heads by then."

"You might be able to come," Richie informed him, "but for right now, I think it's best that we kept distance from each other for a little while longer."

Duncan nodded. He understood, but had hoped Richie would get past what happened last year.

"Richie," Duncan insisted, "I told you I'd like to take back what happened, but I can't. You can't keep away from me forever. Keep note of that. Both of you."

"Thanks for the tip," Richie nodded before he returned to the hotel. Tori looked at him for a moment, "Look, Mac, I think he needs space a little longer."

"I can tell," Duncan replied.

"I'll see what I can do," Tori assured him, "I love you like a father, and I especially love Richie. It's not easy to see you guys drift apart, even after the forgiving part. Forgiving was hard, but forgetting seems to be harder."

"Good luck," Duncan nodded.

"Thanks," Tori replied before joining her fiance in the hotel.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Tori was startled upon seeing Richie with his old motorcycle, "What the hell?"

"What?" Richie quipped as he took off his helmet, "I got my old bike back."

"I see that," Tori quipped, "but how?"

"How?" Richie smirked before glancing at the motorcycle, "Well, I had to do some persuasion to convince the guy to let me buy my bike back."

Tori gulped, not really knowing what he was implying with that persuasion.

"Don't worry," Richie held his fiance's arms, "there's nothing to worry about. Nothing you need to be concerned about."

"I hope you're right," Tori nodded before sharing a kiss with her fiance.

"Wanna hang out at the bar for a little date?" Richie asked.

Tori smiled, "Sure."

She got on her violet helmet and went with Richie and he took her with the bar.

Several Months Ago

Richie smiled as he was taking pictures of Tori, "You're looking beautiful, Tor."

"I feel a bit goofy," Tori chuckled a bit before continuing to pose near Richie's motorcycle.

"I told you that you had the looks of a supermodel," Richie stated.

He continued to take more pictures until he and Tori sensed the Buzz. They looked on as a car stopped in front of them, tires squealing.

"Move the bike, kid," a dark haired man demanded as he peeked out of the window of his car. Richie didn't comply, "Find another way."

"Richie, maybe we should get going," Tori suggested.

"Tori, you do know he can go another direction, right?" Richie asked. Tori eyed the pavement of the road they were at, "Oh, I'm glad you noted that."

"I said move the bike," the man demanded as he stopped his car again, "I got an appointment to keep."

"There's another pavement in the road we're standing on," Tori pointed out, "you do know that, right?"

The man stepped out of the car, "I'm not gonna tell you again. Out of the way."

"Wanna move the bike," Richie suggested, "move it yourself."

The man got out his sword before approaching them, "You should have moved your bike. So, who's it gonna be: you or your little girlfriend?"

Richie shook his head and replied as he went to get his sword, "Oh brother."

"Seriously," Tori scoffed, "There was another pavement in our area right next to where we are standing. You could have gone to your appointment that way. This is not necessary."

"I prefer this road," the man replied before he lunged as Richie. Richie began the duel with the man.

"Come on," the man initiated the fight further as he appeared to be the aggressor. The fight continued until Richie gained the upper hand and pinned the man to a nearby dumpster before taking his head and his Quickening.

The Present

Richie joined Tori at the bar.

"Nice little place," Tori quipped.

The couple looked over at the sign which read, "Beat Delia, win a beer".

Delia, a blonde woman, was arm wrestling a heavy set man.

"Couldn't possibly be for the beer," Richie retorted, "You might as well give it away."

Delia easily defeated the heavy set man, "Maybe the critic wants to try me?"

Tori and Richie glanced at each other.

"For beer?" Richie pointed at his drink, "No thanks."

"If you don't like it," Delia suggested, "go someplace else."

"All right then," Richie replied as he took off his jacket.

"You're going for it?" Tori asked.

"Of course," Richie answered, "and when I win, I'll let you have the beer."

He kissed her.

"Your wife?" Delia asked.

"She'll be my wife soon," Richie answered, "she's my fiance."

"Well, congrats."

"Thanks," Richie replied before preparing for the challenge, "Let's do it."

"Good luck with the challenge," Tori quipped.

Delia and Richie took part of the arm wrestling challenge, and at first, they were evenly matched.

Suddenly, Richie is distracted when he sensed the Buzz. Tori sensed it as well. Delia gained the upper hand against Richie. Tori looked over at Richie, "Well, I gotta say, Delia has beauty and brawn, not that it's any of my business."

The couple looked to see a young man with long, curly blonde hair.

"Barkeep!" the man called out, "Scotch rocks, double."

"That's Delia to you, bud," Delia replied.

"Delia? Well, in that case," the man replied, "I'll have a beer, and a haircut."

He looked over at Richie, almost in a panic, "A demon. Demon!"

The man got out his sword and lunged towards Richie, who got out his sword and blocked the attack, "Take it easy."

"Not until you are dead, demon!" the young man shouted.

"Demon?!" Richie exclaimed in disbelief, "My name's Richie Ryan, and I'm human."

"Oh yeah," the man replied, "my name is Carter Wellan, and you are dead!"

Tori stopped him this time, "If you are going to do this, at least take it outside!"

"Yeah," Delia replied, "this sword fight is not cool!"

"Fine," Carter replied.

Richie and Tori met up with Carter outside at a safe distance from the bar.

"You will die today, demon!" Carter exclaimed.

"I'm telling you," Richie insisted, "I am not a demon!"

"Keep telling yourself that, if that makes you feel better," Carter replied.

"He clearly is hallucinating," Tori stated.

"So what else is new?" Richie retorted, "This is my duel."

"You're right," Tori stepped back, "just be careful, okay?"

"I will, babe," Richie replied before he gave her a kiss, "I love you, Tori."

"I love you too, Rich," Tori smiled.

Richie stepped forward and started the fight with a hallucinating Carter. It started with Richie dodging blows, and blocking blows, and giving counter attacks of his own. Suddenly, he started seeing a demon in Carter's place. Richie's eyes widened in shock, "It can't be."

The duel resumed between both men who were now both seeing demons. Eventually, Richie gained the upper hand against Carter, slashed his chest, and knocked him to the ground.

"There can be only one!" Richie declared before taking Carter's head. Moments later, there wasn't much of a Quickening from Carter, so he looked at Tori after the victory.

"Are you okay?" Tori asked, concerned.

"I think so," Richie nodded, "come on, let's go."

Richie and Tori got their helmets on as his fiance joined him on the back of the motorcycle, not acknowledging a voice yelling at Richie, "You're a dead man! You hear me?! Dead!"

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"Get dressed," Richie told his fiance. Tori nodded as they both hurriedly got into clothes.

Suddenly, a black man wearing nice attire appear with sword in hand, "Wow. Did I break in at the wrong time? Aw, too bad."

He swung his sword at Richie, who blocked the attack with his own sword.

"Richie!" Tori exclaimed.

"I believe we haven't been properly introduced, beautiful," the man glanced over at Tori, "but you'll get to know me soon enough after I take his head."

"Who are you anyway?" Richie demanded.

"And why do you want my fiance's head?" Tori added.

"My name is Haresh Clay," the man answered, "and your fiance took my student's head, and for that, he's dead as well!"

"What student?!" Richie retorted, "What are you talking about?!"

"Carter Wellan," Clay answered.

"Oh you mean," Richie scoffed, "that guy who thought I was a demon. He was a real nut job!"

He continued to block blow after blow.

Suddenly, Richie saw a demon in Clay's place, "Oh no. Not again!"

"Richie?!" Tori exclaimed in concern.

"Tori, I...I'm...we have to get out of here," Richie replied.

"He's out for revenge," Tori replied, "I get that."

"You don't understand," Richie insisted as he grabbed her hand, "We gotta go!"

Tori didn't argue further and took his hand as they managed to escape the house they were staying in.

"You will not get far!" Clay shouted from inside the house, "I will find you!"

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Richie staggered over in shock. He felt strange. He had been having this strange sensation ever since he took Carter's head five days ago. It was stupid of him to accept the strange Skull X candy which some strange looking individual. Tori encouraged him to buy the bag of candy because the guy claimed it would help his boss with his cancer.

Richie clutched his head with his hand and groaned. He felt dizzy, as if the world was spinning. He tried to call for Tori, but the words couldn't escape from his mouth. He couldn't even call out for help as he blacked out.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Tori was startled upon sensing the Buzz. She walked down towards the house with her tachi in hand, "I swear, if that Clay guy comes over here, I'll..."

She opened the door and saw Duncan.

"Mac, what are you doing here?" Tori asked.

"I heard you two were attacked by Haresh Clay," Duncan answered, "I came here to try to help you two."

"How did you know this guy?" Tori asked.

Duncan glared at her for a moment before speaking up, "I knew him from long ago, back in Southern Europe in 1657. He took the head of my friend Graham Ashe, who was a master. I'm glad Richie got a sword that resembled Graham's, something Amanda stole."

Tori chuckled, "That was after Zorelda broke Richie's old sword before she kidnapped him."

Duncan sighed, "From what Richie had explained about his experience, he'd never be able to live it down."

The two were startled upon hearing a loud thud.

"What was that?" Duncan asked. They both hurried up the stairs. They looked in their horror to find Richie convulsing on the floor.

"Richie!" Duncan exclaimed in horror.

"I didn't realize Immortals could have seizures!" Tori exclaimed in equal panic.

"We can't die from mortal diseases, but we're not immune to them," Duncan took off his jacket and made it as a make shift pillow. Tori placed her fiance on his side as Duncan placed the jacket on Richie's head.

"It's going to be okay, Richie," Duncan assured him, his voice trembling on the verge of tears, "It'll be okay."

Tori was actually in tears, trying to comfort Richie, "Hold on, Richie. Please hold on."

For what felt like an eternity, the seizures stopped after three minutes. Tori sobbed, "Just hang in there, Richie. Mac and I will help you."

"Help me place him on the bed," Duncan instructed. He gently grabbed Richie by one arm and Tori grabbed him by the other arm. They gently placed him on the bed. Tori gently held her fiance's hand and kissed it. Duncan returned with a wash cloth and placed it on Richie's forehead.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Duncan walked over to a nearby closet. It wasn't often when an Immortal dealt with a mortal disease, a seizure at that was definitely rare, but it had happened before. He recalled an incident of an Immortal Nick Johnson having a seizure back in 1970. He had some drugs before eventually having a seizure, but he didn't die despite how serious the seizure was.

Duncan sighed before seeing a small plastic bag. He examined the bag and saw gray skulls and paled in shock at the sight. He recognized the contents. This was Skull X, some drug disguised as candy created by the sinister cult known as Cult X.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Richie slowly opened his eyes. He fully came to as he found himself next to Tori. She had been crying. He looked at her confused, "T...Tori."

"Richie," Tori smiled, holding his hand with her own hands, "it's okay. I'm here."

"Tori," Richie gave out a small smile.

"Are you okay?" Tori asked.

"Yeah. What's the matter?" Richie gently touched her face, "I'm okay."

They kissed before Richie looked around, "What happened?"

"You had a seizure," Tori answered.

"What?" Richie sat up in shock.

She nodded, trying to comfort him as she laid him back down.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Duncan looked up as he overheard Richie and Tori talking. Holding the bag in his hands, he turned around, deciding to confront the pair with the Skull X drug.

He walked over to where the bed where Tori was comforting Richie. Richie sat up in surprise upon seeing the Highlander. Duncan only stared for a moment. Then, he pulled Richie into his arms in a crushing embrace, something he did back when he was a teenager.

"Hey, let go!" Richie exclaimed in disbelief.

Duncan was too worried to be angry. There was only one question, "Why?"

"What?!" Richie and Tori exclaimed simultaneously.

Duncan managed to get a hold of himself as he as the voice came out in a sob and he noticed the tears that came down from his eyes.

"The Skull X candy?" Tori asked, noticing the familiar bag in his hands.

"That's not candy," Duncan stressed, "it's a drug. I know about these Cult X sickos as they pulled a stunt like that back in 1969 and 1970."

"Cult X?" Tori shot up. He could tell she was mentally kicking herself for not paying attention to the details.

"What did they tell you about the Skull X?" Duncan asked as he managed to compose himself.

"The guy said that he was donating the money he was selling for his boss who was dying of cancer," Tori answered. She sighed and looked down, "How could I have been so stupid? Richie could have been..."

"Now, stop right there," Richie gently grasped his fiance's arm, "you had no way of knowing what was going to happen."

"I still should have paid attention and examined the Skull X before letting you try it," Tori stated.

"Tori," Duncan shook his head, "Immortals don't die from seizures, as it is a mortal cause of death, and besides, it wasn't as bad as it could have been."

Tori and Richie looked at each other, then back at Duncan.

"Even then," Richie looked down, "the guy also said that it would help get rid of the nightmares I was having."

He looked at Duncan, "I know I told you I've forgiven you, Mac, but I still have the nightmares about when you nearly took my head when you were under the influence of the Dark Quickening. The nightmares wouldn't go away."

Duncan sighed sadly. That was why Richie still wanted to remain distant from him. He was still haunted by nightmares for what he did. He wished so many times he could take back what he did that night, but he knew he couldn't. All he could do was make things right.

"I'm sorry for what I did to you," Duncan apologized, "to both of you."

Tori noticed that Richie was starting to tremble before she looked at him, "Mac."

"Joe told me what you said to him before you left," Duncan said with a small grin, "I need to be prepared in case I do pull a stunt like that again."

Last Year

Tori looked on as Richie was practicing with his sword while talking to Jack on the laptop.

"I don't know, Tori," Jack told her, "Coltec appeared to be a holy man, from what I heard, and the dark quickening that you two mentioned, it's a rare occurrence when an immortal is affected by the Dark Quickening."

"So it had happened?" Tori asked.

"Yeah," Jack answered, "According to IUA records, there had been only two instances of Dark Quickenings, and it didn't end well for one of them."

"What happened?" Richie asked.

"The first one had to be beheaded by one of our mortal agents," Jack answered, "it caused a lot of damage to property, but that dark quickening was gone."

"What about the other immortal?" Tori asked.

"They found some holy fountain," Jack answered, "and that immortal defeated their evil self in the holy fountain. Keep me updated if you get any further details."

"We will," Tori nodded before ending the call.

Tori and Richie both sensed the Buzz, and turned to see Duncan enter the dojo.

"Mac," Tori spoke up first.

"You okay?" Richie asked.

"Yeah," Duncan answered, "I'm fine."

"We were getting a little worried about you," Tori stated.

"You were?" Duncan asked, "Why?"

"Well, you found Coltec," Richie stated.

"Yeah," Duncan replied, "I found him."

"We know how much you like the guy," Tori stated.

"We're sorry," Richie added.

"You're sorry," Duncan glanced at the pair.

"Yeah, well," Richie said, "you did what you had to do, but I know how much you hated it."

"Hated it?" Duncan flashed an evil smile, "You're wrong."

He drawn out his katana and slashed Richie across the chest, "I loved it."

"Mac?" Tori glanced in shock.

Richie backed away, "What are you doing, Mac?"

"You're a smart little boy," Duncan stated, "Why don't you figure it out?"

He attacked again, prompting Richie to defend himself. Duncan gave Richie's leg a cut as he toyed with him. Tori gasped in shock and she prepared to get out her Tachi to fight.

"Aht! Aht! Aht!" Duncan grabbed Tori by her hair, making her drop her sword, "You know the rules, girl. Not two against one."

"Mac, what the hell are you doing?!" Richie exclaimed in more shock.

Ignoring him, Duncan eyed Tori with lust, "You have some nice honkers, and I'll have my fun with you, honkers and all, after I have taken your boyfriend's head."

"Leave her out of this!" Richie exclaimed, defending himself as Duncan resumed his duel with him.

Tori shook in a mix of anger and fear as she backed to a wall, grabbing a nearby railing.

"Whatever happened, Mac," Richie insisted, "we can work it out."

"Sorry," Duncan replied, "wrong number."

He attacked again, gave Richie's shoulder a cut before bowing mockingly. Then the two men fought before Duncan cut Richie again, smacked a kiss on top of his head, and finally disarmed him.

"Just tell me why," Richie pleaded in worry and asked, "The teacher kills the pupil? Is that what this is all about? Is it because there can be only one? Is that it?"

Duncan laughed before answering, "That's as good a reason as any."

"No!" Tori yelled in worry, unable to contain her worry any longer.

"Yes," Duncan smirked before he raised his sword, preparing to behead Richie. Suddenly, Duncan was shot multiple times before he fell to the ground, dead.

Tori followed Richie's glance and they saw Joe, who pulled the trigger. Then, she hurried to Richie's side and helped him up as Joe walked over to them.

"Are you two all right?" he asked them.

"Yeah," Richie answered.

"Thanks to you," Tori added.

"Aw, Joe, what the hell," Richie stated in disbelief, "He tried to kill me, and there was no telling what he was going to do to Tori afterwards."

"Just get out of here," Joe insisted, "both of you."

"You saw what he did, Joe," Richie glanced over at Duncan's body.

"He's right," Tori added, following her boyfriend's glance, "we have to help him."

"Don't you get it?" Joe stressed, "This is not MacLeod. Not the one we knew. This man is not your friend."

"Joe?!" Tori exclaimed in shock.

"Oh, Joe," Richie added.

"And when he comes to," Joe spoke up, overriding them both, "he'll take your head, Richie, and there's no telling what he will do to Tori before he does the same to her!"

Richie saw Tori close to hyperventilating. They both knew it was true as they picked up their swords.

"What about you?" Richie asked.

"Will he…." Tori started to ask.

"There's nothing in it for him," Joe answered, "I'm not immortal. No quickening."

To both Tori and Richie, they feel it was not to hope on as Joe himself wasn't convinced.

"Please, go," Joe insisted before Richie or Tori could object, "please!"

"Okay," Richie finally relented.

"Please."

"Damn it!" Richie exclaimed before he left.

Tori eyed Joe as she took a deep breath. She was relieved that Richie was okay, but she was now angry with Duncan, in fact she was shaking, but if this was this Dark Quickening they heard about, she wanted Joe to give the Highlander an important warning. She walked over to the Watcher.

"Tori?" Joe eyed her, slightly confused.

"If this happens to be the Dark Quickening you mentioned," Tori told him, "and he does come out of it somehow, you tell Duncan MacLeod if he ever pulls a stunt like that again, I won't hesitate next time. He goes. I won't hesitate to take him out, got it?"

Joe nodded, "Clear and loud, and don't worry, I'll tell him."

"Good," Tori nodded before turning to leave, joining Richie.

Present Day

Tori slightly blushed in embarrassment and took another deep breath, "It was at the heat of the moment and you were under the influence of the Dark Quickening."

"I still feel bad for what I did to you two," Duncan stated with remorse, "you know, if it wasn't for Joe, Richie, you would have been dead, and Tori, I would have...God knows what I would have done before taking your head."

"You don't have to hide the word rape from me, MacLeod," Tori stated, "because that's what happened to Richie a couple of years ago."

"Don't remind me," Richie replied. He looked down for a moment before he looked back at Tori, "I still can't believe you didn't walk out on me after the rape."

"Richie," Tori gave her fiance a comforting touch, "I told you already that it wasn't your fault, and besides, she's gone now and she won't be able to hurt you anymore."

Her. Yeah, Duncan could tell Tori didn't want to mention her name. Felicia was the one who did that to Richie almost two years ago, shortly after Tori and Richie officially became a couple. He sighed, and decided not to press the issue further.

"Do you guys need anything else?" Duncan asked.

"Yeah," Richie answered, "let me take on Haresh Clay."

"Richie, you can't win," Duncan replied.

"Besides," Tori added, "you need rest from your ordeal."

"Tori, I'll be okay," Richie stated, "and besides, everyone's entitled to their own opinion."

"Look," Duncan insisted, "the fight is mine."

"Mac, forget it," Richie stated, "The days of you protecting me are long gone."

"Richie," Tori quipped.

"Hey," Duncan replied, "this isn't about me protecting you. I have to finish this."

"Well then," Richie stated, "you'd better find him before I do."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Duncan walked into the bar as Joe was about to open. He realized with everything that had happened to Richie in particular, it was time for him to patch things up with Joe now that he had fully patched things up with both Richie and Tori. He was going to need his Watcher's help.

"I was just opening up," Joe told him as he placed another chair down, "Now, you look like a man could use a drink."

"We both know why I'm here," Duncan stated.

"Yeah," Joe answered, "the world is going to hell, hallucinating over demons and some having seizures, and in the mix of all that, Richie is hunting Clay, and there's nothing you can do about it."

"He's gonna die," Duncan stated, "he'll leave Tori behind before they can get married."

"Nah, he might live," Joe replied before he saw his friend and said, "Hell of a thing, weighing ethics and honoring a friend's life."

"Where's Clay?" Duncan asked.

Joe sighed. Feeling he won't give him any answers, he turned to leave.

"MacLeod," Joe called out and held up a slip of paper, "Clay's address. Bartender gave it to me."

He handed Duncan the paper, "Sort of a professional courtesy."

"Thanks," Duncan accepted the paper.

"Mac," Joe called for his friend before rolling up his sleeve and revealing the gauze on his wrist as he was unwrapping it, revealing a scar where his tattoo was.

"You're out of the Watchers?" Duncan asked.

"Maybe it's too late," Joe answered, "or maybe it's about time. It's like Mrs. Wischnoff used to say in my old neighborhood, Meit ein tuchas can meir nisht danzen a tsvai hossannas."

"Yeah," Duncan replied before translating the last statement, "With one ass, a man can't dance at two weddings."

"You know," Joe stated, "you were right. I couldn't be both your Watcher and your friend."

"I'm sorry," Duncan apologized.

"For what? Making me choose?" Joe replied, "Look, when I joined the Watchers, I thought it was the most important thing in my life. Learning about the Immortals, keeping the chronicles. I thought it was work that had to be done. Well, somebody else can do it now."

"Before I go," Duncan looked at Joe, "I want to invite you to Richie and Tori's wedding."

"Really?" Joe glanced in surprise.

Duncan nodded, "They want you to be here. Tori is fond of you, and she'll be happy if you come, and Richie would be happy to see you there too."

Joe nodded and gave a small smile, "I'll make note of that."

"I have to go," Duncan stated, holding up the paper.

"I know," Joe replied as Duncan turned to leave, "See ya."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Duncan walked up the staircase, sensing the Buzz. He pulled out his katana and walked over to the next elevator. The elevator and another sword blocked his blow. He looked up and saw Richie had blocked his attack and Tori was behind him.

"What are you doing here?" Richie asked.

"What are you two doing here?" Duncan asked in response.

"How did you find this place?" Tori asked.

"Does that matter?" Duncan retorted.

"It does if you're after Clay," Richie replied.

"You should be resting," Duncan insisting, "especially from that seizure."

"I'm telling you," Richie insisted, "I'm fine."

"You really shouldn't argue with him," Tori stated, "and for the record, I'm not taking sides here. I think Richie is being rash, and I'm trying to keep the peace."

"Yeah, yeah," Duncan replied, "I get it. Anyway, Richie, what do you expect me to do? Stand aside and say, go ahead and take him?"

"Well, that's what you're asking me to do," Richie replied, "isn't it?"

"You'll lose," Duncan insisted, "Tori would too if she was fighting Clay."

"So what else is new?" Tori rolled her eyes, annoyed.

"Maybe, maybe not," Richie replied, "Look, if there's one thing you've taught us, taught me, it's that I could die anytime. There's nothing I can do to change that. I got myself into this mess, and I'm not running from it. Not even Tori has a say in it."

"Whatever happens, happens," Tori crossed her arms, "that's all we can do."

"That's all any of us can ever do," Duncan stated.

Suddenly, Richie started feeling strange. He felt his thoughts changing, from the task of taking on Clay to some strange evil thoughts.

"Richie?" Duncan looked on in concern.

"Baby," Tori called out, "are you okay?"

Richie smiled an evil smile before he pushed her away, "I'm fine. I realize I shouldn't fight Clay."

"Good," Duncan sighed happily as he helped up Tori.

"No," Richie got out his sword, "I should be fighting you!"

Tori's eyes widened in horror as she gasped, "Must be the effects of the Skull X drugs."

Richie swung his sword at Duncan, who blocked the attack, "I have a score to settle with you for nearly killing me."

"Richie?!" Duncan exclaimed in shock, "Richie, come on. We gotten past this. Remember?"

The two men duked it out in an intense sword fight.

"I know I can't interfere," Tori pleaded, "Richie, I love you and you love me! You can't let the Skull X control you! You're smarter than that, Richie."

"Richie!" Duncan called out for his friend, "Richie, you have to pull through! Whatever is going on with you, you have to snap out of it! Remember who you are!"

Suddenly, Richie felt memories surge past him. He remembered the good times he had with Duncan and Tori. He staggered back, regaining control of his mind, "What...Mac?"

"Are you back with us?" Tori asked.

"Yes," Richie answered before he apologized, "Yes. I'm sorry, Mac. I'm sorry, Tori."

"All is good, tough guy," Duncan replied before he hugged Richie, "all is good."

Tori received a text message, "Oh no."

"What is it?" Richie asked.

"I got a message from Mandrake," Tori answered, "the evil mad man Destiny is attacking Seacouver. He, Lothar, Batman, and a group of others are on their way to stop Destiny."

"Richie, Tori," Duncan revealed, "There's something else I haven't told you about Clay. He shamed me."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"Are you okay?" Tori asked.

"I think so," Richie answered. Mac had finally convinced him to allow him to take this fight, and the couple made a safe distance from the fight, "I can't believe I was stupid enough to try that Skull X drugs."

"It's not your fault," Tori assured him, "I'm the one who should be sorry. I was the one who convinced you to get the stupid things. I was naive cause I thought it would be a nice gesture to help someone out with cancer."

"You had no way of knowing," Richie assured his fiance. They shared a kiss before they heard strange chanting from a distance.

"What's going on here?" Richie asked.

"I have no idea," Tori answered, "but we need to find out."

The pair hurried to where they heard the noise from. They saw a group of people wearing a gray top bowing to nowhere or no one in particular.

"Destiny! Destiny! Destiny! Destiny!" the group chanted, "All hail Destiny! Destiny has come!"

"Destiny?" Richie glanced up.

"This must be what this cult is worshiping," Tori stated before they both broke up the group.

Richie looked in shock upon seeing a familiar blonde among this group, "Donna?!"

"Hello, Richie," Donna gave an evil smirk.

"So it's the baby trapper," Tori got out her sword after knocking down two of the members of the cult, "the woman who lied to Richie about her son being his as well."

"I remember you," Donna glanced at her, "You're still a boring plain Jane like last time, and Richie is a loser for picking you."

Richie looked disgusted about what she was saying, "What about Jeremy?"

"Jeremy?" Donna glared in disgust, "Well, I sent him away to foster care shortly after we last met. I didn't want that brat in my life after you couldn't be there for us."

Tori gasped in horror. Richie felt sick about this as well, "How could you be so twisted, Donna?!"

"Well I joined Cult X last year," Donna stated, "at least they respect me, unlike you."

Richie paced the area for a moment before asking, "What about Joey?"

"What about him?"

"Did you check to see if..."

"He is the father," Donna stated, "but he didn't want anything to do with Jeremy, so I did what I felt was best for both of us."

Richie and Tori glanced at each other in shock. They couldn't believe how horrid Donna had become.

"It seems that you two ended up a lovely couple," Donna stated, "so that's that end of the deal."

"Donna," Richie glanced at her, "you could have trusted us."

"He's right," Tori added, "you should have at least trusted Richie. There are reasons why people can't tell you things and..."

"Save it," Donna retorted, "I know you both are Immortal, and I think you both deserve each other when I come to think about it."

"Freeze!" a voice shouted.

Tori and Richie backed away as they saw Jack, Cassandra and a group of IUA agents on the scene.

"Put your hands where we can see them!" Jack ordered, "Everyone who is involved with Cult X that is!"

Donna sighed roughly as she raised her hands up. The agents proceeded to take her and the other cult members into custody. Jack and Cassandra remained with Richie and Tori.

"Are you guys okay?" Jack asked.

"We're fine," Tori answered, "thanks."

"What are you guys going to do with Donna and the others?" Richie asked.

"They are going to be taken into IUA custody," Jack explained, "from there, they will be rehabilitated and hopefully reform from this Destiny nonsense."

"Is that your girlfriend, Jack?" Tori asked.

"Yeah," Jack nodded happily, "Yeah. This is my girlfriend Cassandra. Cassandra, meet Tori Gordon and her fiance Richie Ryan."

"It is nice to meet you," Cassandra replied, shaking hands with both of them.

"Nice to meet you too," Richie nodded.

"Pleasure," Tori quipped.

"Cassandra told your friend MacLeod of a quite interesting prophecy the other day," Jack stated, "something she foretold four hundred years ago."

"Quite interesting prophecy?" Cassandra rolled her eyes, "Oh, Jack, you know the right words to say."

"Come on, Cass," Jack told his girlfriend, "tell them what you told MacLeod, what you told me."

Cassandra faced both Tori and Richie before saying, "An evil will come...to vanquish all before him. Only a Highland child, born on the Winter Solstice, who has seen both darkness and light, can stop him."

"Stop who?" Richie asked as he and Tori looked on as they wondered what that meant in regards to Duncan and the prophecy.

"We will find out," Jack stated.

"He's right," Cassandra added, "only time will tell."

Duncan found himself face to face with Clay after finally convincing Richie to allow him to take this fight. They bowed before each other, and took off their jackets, before they began their sword fight.

Duncan managed to cut Clay's arm during a blow, placing his opponent by surprise. Clay waved his sword around for a little bit before the fight resumed. Clay managed to cut Duncan's shoulder in another blow. He took the blow for a moment, and Clay bowed before the fight resumed.

Eventually, Duncan and Clay were at each other's back and then Duncan gained the upper hand and stabbed Clay in the back, gaining both his own sword, and Clay's sword in his hands. Duncan walked over and circled him. He placed Clay's sword on the ground.

"You can walk away," Duncan told him, "if it ends here."

"It's what we do," Clay whispered. Duncan lifted his katana in the air before he swung it and beheaded Clay. He watched as the body dropped to the ground. He felt the energy of the Quickening as the energy transferred from Clay to Duncan, and lighting hit him in full force. He looked up as gray clouds surrounded the night sky and he took the full force of Clay's Quickening.

After the cloud cleared, and the Quickening ended, Duncan knelt over Clay's headless body, lifted Clay's sword over his head, and then stuck it point first to the ground and looked down at Clay's body.

"Mac said you left the Watchers," Richie told Joe as he looked over at him, "We didn't believe him."

"Yeah," Tori nodded in agreement, "that seemed not like you."

"Check it out," Joe replied before he unbuttoned his cuff, and showing the couple his healing wrist.

"He wasn't kidding," Tori quipped as Richie reached for the wrist.

"Ah, don't touch it," Joe told them.

"Hurts?" Richie asked.

"The wrist is not so bad," Joe answered, "but the rest, well, I lost a lot of good friends."

"Well, Joe," Richie replied, "I can't really say I'm sorry."

"Neither can I," Tori replied.

"I mean, we know the Watchers was your life," Richie spoke further, "but dark glasses, guys in black coats, secret meetings, I don't know. It, uh, it just didn't seem like your style."

"Exactly," Tori quipped.

"Yeah," Joe replied, "well, it was never meant to be like that."

"Then make it right," Duncan spoke up as he emerged from the dark corner he was sitting in, walking over to the bar, "Can you get back in?"

"What?" Joe asked incredulously.

"Can you get back in the Watchers?" Duncan asked.

"Maybe. Probably," Joe answered, "Why?"

"For thousands of years," Duncan explained his case, "Immortals have fought and Watchers have observed. One day, there will be only one of us left, and someday maybe none at all. Somebody has to record that we've lived. Somebody has to record the history we've seen, and the lessons we've learned. I know what I said, but our lives, our story has to be recorded, not by some petty clerk, but by someone who feels, someone who does. Someone who has honor. Like you."

"What about our friendship?" Joe asked.

"We'll work it out," Duncan answered before he held out his hand to Richie and clasped his hand briefly, following suit with Tori, "See you around."

"See you, Mac," Joe replied before the Highlander left. Richie and Tori looked at Joe.

"Tori and I are going to get married in a few weeks," Richie announced, "want to come?"

Joe looked on in surprise, "Me?"

"You're someone we care about," Tori added, "we would love it if you come to our wedding."

"Mac and some of Tori's family are helping us prepare for the wedding," Richie explained, "We were originally just planning to elope, then we changed it to a small wedding, and recently, Mac and Flash agreed that we should have the best wedding we could have. We couldn't really refuse because they're family."

Joe gave a smile as he was touched at the statement, "I guess I'll go. Mac did offer an invitation earlier. So, I'll go."

"We can't wait to see you then," Richie smiled.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Over the next few weeks, Richie and Tori were preparing for their wedding. Duncan and Flash helped out with the arrangements such as the music during the reception, the food, and the guests.

Within the month, it was time for the wedding.

Richie looked around as he appeared to be nervous. Duncan walked over to him, "I never imagined this day would happen at all, given that...you know."

"I remembered telling you I was interested in being the best man at your wedding to Tessa," Richie said, "and now, you are the best man at my wedding. I'm pleasantly surprised."

"I'm surprised too," Duncan smiled, "but I'm glad you are able to marry the woman you love."

"Me too."

"Speaking of surprises."

The two men turned to see Amanda arriving at the area with Anne in tow. She was holding her daughter, who appeared to be calm.

"Anne," Duncan asked, "what are you doing here?"

"I thought we agreed that we were to invite her?" Amanda declared.

"I'm only here for the ceremony," Anne said, "to see two good friends of mine get married, and besides, Mary here would probably get fussy if I were to be at the reception."

"It's good to see you again, Anne," Richie replied, shaking her hand.

"Thanks," Anne smiled, "and congratulations on your wedding."

"Thanks."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Tori looked in the mirror, preparing to marry the love of her life. She had known Richie for about five years now, and she never thought in her wildest dreams that she'd be the one who would get married. She knew she could never have children because immortals couldn't have children, but regardless, she was looking forward to spending the rest of her immortal life with her soon to be husband.

"Tori?"

She turned around to see her mother.

"Hey, mom," Tori smiled and hugged her mother.

"I'm so proud of you," Janet smiled, "I...I never imagined we'd be here today. Richie is a great guy and he has come a long way from when I first met him."

"Yeah," Tori nodded, "he has. It's a miracle that Richie held his head high, even after Duncan's Dark Quickening ordeal."

"Thanks to you being by his side."

"I always had faith in him," Tori nodded.

"I know your aunt Dale told you about what I did all those years ago," Janet started to say.

"She never told me," Tori replied.

"Oh?"

"I found out on my own."

Janet sighed with relief, "I hope that you can give me a chance to be the best mother I can be."

"I'm willing to try," Tori smiled, "after all, you're about to be Richie's mother-in-law."

"Of course."

With that, Janet and Tori hugged.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Richie arrived at the chapel with Duncan and the groomsmen Rick, LJ, Kshin, and Duke. He hadn't met Duke or Dick prior to the wedding, but agreed to have him the fourth and fifth groomsmen since Bruce volunteered Duke, while Dick volunteered himself. Bruce and some of the Bat Family: Barbara, Tim, Cassandra Cain, Jason, and Stephanie were also present along with the Gordon Family, some of the IUA agents, including Jack and Cassandra, Constantine, Zatanna, Joe and Methos. It was a remarkable relief that Abby, Janet, Sara and the Defenders had managed to work out their work schedules to make it to this wedding.

He walked over to the altar as Duncan and the groomsmen walked to their position as he waited for Tori to appear. Moments later, Tori arrived with her hair nicely done, wearing a beautiful white wedding gown with her face covered in a thick white veil as Flash was giving her away. Amanda and the bridesmaids: Maria, Angie, April, Jedda, Amy, and Sara all accompanied them to the altar. Richie's foster sister Maria, and his friend Angie were able were able to take time off their busy schedules to attend Richie's wedding. They walked down the aisle together before Flash escorted Tori to the altar as she stood in front of Richie.

Richie had his breath taken away at the sight of his soon to be wife and spoke to her in a voice to where only she could hear, "You look beautiful."

Tori nodded and smiled as she blushed.

"We are gathered here today to join Richard Ryan and Victoria Gordon in wedded bliss," the minster announced before he faced Richie, "Richard, do you take Victoria to be your lawfully wedded wife, to live together in Holy Matrimony? Will you love her, comfort her, honor her, and keep her in sickness and health, forsaking others, keeping yourself only onto her for as long as you shall live?"

"I do," Richie answered, "with all my heart and soul."

The minster then looked over at Tori, "Victoria, do you take Richard to be your lawfully wedded husband to live together in Holy Matrimony? Will you love him, comfort him, honor him, and keep him in sickness and health, forsaking others and keeping yourself only onto him for as long as you shall live?"

"I do," Tori answered, "with all my heart and soul."

The minster then informed the group, "At this time, the couple will read out the vows they have prepared."

Richie said his vows first, "Tori, I had no idea I needed someone as wonderful, smart, and beautiful as you. You were good to me ever since we first met, and you were the only one who stuck with me, no matter how bad things got. You are my rock, and you saw a side of me I never thought I was capable of showing. You have always been there for me through the good times and the bad times. I vow to be the best husband I can be, and support and protect you till death do we part. I promise this in front of our loved ones present here today."

Tori then said her vows, "Richie, you have a wonderful personality, and a great sense of humor. I never thought I was capable of love, let alone someone like you until I let you in my life, and the night we first met was the night where our lives had changed for the better. You are a gentlemen and a wonderful soul. While you are stubborn at times, I always had faith in you, and I still do. I love you, Richie Ryan, and I vow to be the best wife I can be, and to support and protect you till death do we part. I promise this in front of our loved ones present here today."

"By the power invested in me," the minster declared, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Methos handed the rings to the minster before Richie placed a ring on her right finger, and Tori did the same to him. Then, Richie lifted the veil and saw Tori's face for the first time as his wife and they shared a kiss on the lips.

As the couple left the chapel, Tori tossed her bouquet of flowers. The bridesmaids and Amanda tried reaching for it, but Jedda ended up catching the bouquet.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Tori found herself on cloud nine after the documents were signed and notarized. She went with Richie toward the small hall that had been prepared for this event. Once the couple had arrived, Mandrake stood up and made the announcement everyone had been waiting for, "Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Mister and Mrs. Richard Ryan!"

Applause broke out in the room. With that, the song the couple had chosen for their first dance had started. It was from the movie Dirty Dancing and the song was "Time of My Life", and the couple shared the first dance together.

After the song ended, the refreshments were served to everyone. They got an excellent service to provide them with a great catering service and everyone enjoyed the food and drink, including alcohol. Zatanna managed to keep an eye out on Constantine to keep him from getting too drunk.

Eventually, the dancing resumed, starting with the Zombie's "Time of the Season" per Amanda's suggestion, both Flash and Joe were able to give Tori a father – daughter dance, upon Flash and Tori's suggestion as Flash had raised her for years along with her aunt Dale, and Joe had also been like a father to Tori. Flash and Tori's dance was to a song of Flash's liking while Tori's dance with Joe was a bluesy song that was to Joe's liking. There were some fast songs to dance to as well.

This was the wedding both Richie Ryan and Tori Gordon would never forget, along with Duncan and Amanda, who were proud of their students.

Author's Note:

Basically, this is a condensed version of the fanfiction The Magic Within, which coincides with the main story, the current story, and this chapter mainly covers the Highlander bits and I cut out the steamy version with Tori and Richie to keep it at the T rating, and to keep it as a Highlander – Defenders of the Earth crossover. Methos and Connor were also in the story, but they were heavily in the scenes with the DC characters, which was why I didn't include their scenes.
