Defenders Chronicles: Highlander
By AmandaDoE
Chapter Forty-Three: Into the Fire
Amanda was looking at the Eiffel Tower, "I really love coming here. Do you remember when Gustave Eiffel built this thing?"
"Yeah. World's Fair, 1889," Duncan answered, "Half of Paris thought it would destroy the city forever. There were fist fights all along the Champs – Elysees."
"Now you can't imagine Paris without it," Amanda stated, "I think I could come here forever."
"If they let us," Duncan replied, "You know, when Kalas had you and Richie, I thought I'd lost you two."
"Imagine how Tori felt with Richie," Amanda spoke up before telling him, "Sorry, go on."
"Anyway," Duncan continued, "I didn't like the feeling."
"Don't worry," Amanda assured him, "We got help escaping."
"As this was the second time this month he's been kidnapped," Duncan stated, "and all he's been through this year. Immortals being exposed will be the cherry on top."
"There's something else on your mind," Amanda noticed the Highlander appearing nervous.
"Yeah, the future," Duncan answered, "if there is one."
"You know," Amanda assured him, "we've lived through witch hunts before, we're still around."
"Yeah, but this time it'll be different," Duncan replied, "Intelligent Services, technology – they'll find us, and we'll scare the hell out of them. What people are afraid of, they'll destroy, or use."
"I'm not ready for this," Amanda admitted.
"Neither am I," Duncan replied, "No one is."

"It's a disaster," Vemas exclaimed as he turned and faced the group, "Wait a minute. Salzer's wife gets our records and goes to the papers? How the hell could you let this happen?"
"Jacques," Joe answered, "no one let it happen, okay?"
"He's right," Flash added, "Christine is being a piss ant blaming all immortals for her husband's death."
"That database that you and Salzer made wasn't sanctioned!" Vemas told Methos.
"It was something new," Methos replied, "It would have been useful."
"Sadly, it fell into the wrong hands," the Phantom added in his calm demeanor.
"Exactly," Methos nodded.
"Why?" Vemas yelled, "Because some piss ant, as Flash Gordon put her, grad student thinks so and screws up a Watcher system that has worked for thousands of years? Security is the reason we stay separate! So that one idiot won't compromise us all!"
"Look," Joe walked over to Vemas, "you cannot blame this whole thing on Adam."
"He is right, sir," the Phantom replied.
"No," Vemas replied, "I can blame you, Dawson. Europe's my territory. If you didn't have the stomach to kill her, you should have told me."
"I tried to shoot her," Joe insisted.
"I tried to shoot her too," Flash added, "and I managed to hit her arm."
Vemas scoffed, "Evidently, not hard enough."
"I don't think this is helping anything," Methos told the group.
"You weren't there, pal," Flash informed Vemas.
"Exactly," Joe chimed in.
"No. If I was, she'd be dead," Vemas replied, "Next time, I'll know to send a man."
"You son of a bitch!" Joe exclaimed. He punched Vemas, who in turned punched back, knocking him down. Flash did the same, and got the same thing in return.
"That is far enough!" the Phantom exclaimed, breaking up the fight.
"Yeah," Methos added, while suggesting, "Why don't we try something useful."
He helped up Joe as Vemas left the room. The Phantom helped up Flash.
"Is everyone all right?" the Phantom asked.
"Yeah," Joe answered.
"I think so," Flash added.
"He's got quite a temper on him," Methos chimed in.
"And a wicked right cross too," Joe added.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Richie looked on as he was comforting Tori, who seemed to be scared. They were sitting on the sofa while April, Rick and Jedda were also present.
"How are you guys holding?" Jedda asked.
"Barely," Richie answered, "At least for now."
"Our lives might very well be over," Tori stated.
"Don't say that!" April exclaimed.
"Well, some scorned bitter lady is set on exposing all immortals," Richie stated, "us included. There's no telling what'll happen to us, Jack, MacLeod, Amanda."
"It's not looking good right now," Rick shook his head. April elbowed her brother.
"I'm not liking this right now," Jedda stated.
"What can we do?" Rick asked.
"I guess all we can do is wait," Tori answered, "and hope for the best."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"Is it okay if I drop you at the hotel?" Methos asked Joe as they left Vemas' apartment.
"Sure," Joe answered before asking, "Where are you going to go?"
"Phantom and I are going to check on the kids as well as Tori and Richie," Flash answered.
"As for me," Methos added, "I'm going to the Tribune. I'm going to see Clancy."
"The editor?" Flash asked.
"You can't stop this now," Joe told him.
"No, spin control," Methos interjected, "You know, I can answer a few questions, maybe reduce the hysteria."
"Good luck with that," Flash replied, "Straight into the lion's den?"
"What makes you think you're going to come out alive?" Joe asked.
"I've got a lot to offer," Methos answered, "Five thousand years of history, Joe – – I was there."
Flash and the Phantom left the area.
"History's been written and people have been known to kill the messenger that waltzes in with a new version of the truth," Joe replied.
"Why would I tell the truth?" Methos asked.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"MacLeod, haven't you ever wanted to do something really, really crazy?" Amanda asked as she and Duncan were at the observation deck of the Eiffel Tower, "I mean, what's the worst that could happen?"
"Amanda, be careful," Duncan advised her, "You hit the ground at a twenty five miles an hour. You want to know what that feels like? We don't fly."
Amanda was standing on the railing platform, "Have you ever tried? Relax. Whatever happens, I'll survive."
"In front of everyone," Duncan stated as he turned to look at the crowd of tourists watching them.
"Look, after tomorrow, everyone's going to know anyway," Amanda insisted, "Come on. For once in your life, just lighten up, and let go and break the damn rules."
"The whole world is about to crash down around our ears and you want to play games," Duncan stated in disbelief.
"Yes. Why not?" Amanda replied, "What better time? Come on."
"Ah, what the hell," Duncan relented before he climbed onto the railing with her.
"Oh!" Amanda exclaimed before she laughed, "Aah!"
"Uh huh. Hm mmm," Duncan walked along the platform, looking over the edge, "Oh boy. Nice view."
"Come on, MacLeod," Amanda spoke with encouragement, "Let's do it. Let's jump."
"No," Duncan answered before he noticed the crowd noticing them, "Uh...let's dance."
"Hmmm?"
Duncan pulled off his sunglasses. She copied him. He put his glasses in his jacket pocket, giving the ground far below them another quick glance.
"Dum. Hmmm?" Duncan held his arm out in a "shall we dance" gesture. Amanda grabbed his hand and pulled them together in a classic tango fashion. As the crowd watched, they tangoed along the railing platform. He dipped Amanda out over the edge, "How'd you do it? How'd you get up here?"
"Because you love it," Amanda answered. She laughed as he dipped her again.
The crowd cheered as Duncan and Amanda kissed. Duncan laughed as they bowed/curtsied to the crowd.
"Oh, thank you," Duncan replied.
Amanda laughed, "Oh my God."
Duncan stated more seriously, "You know, Amanda, I want you to know...if it all ends...I mean, uh..."
"You love me," Amanda stopped him, "I know. You always have."
They kissed again.

"Everything's there," Christine told him, "When they appeared, when they disappeared. Names, aliases, everything."
"And the people who entered those files, the Watchers," Clancy stated.
"Don was one of them," Christine replied, "He knew."
"If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, but I did," Clancy stated before he stood up.
"What are you going to do about it?" Christine asked.
"It's the story of the century," Clancy stated, "More than that, it's the beginning of the apocalypse. When this gets out, all hell's going to break loose."
He got on the phone, "Get me Charles White, CIA, Langley, Virginia."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Kalas entered the room, and closed the door behind him.
"Not now," Clancy insisted, "it's urgent."
"How's life and death?" Kalas asked.
Clancy and Christine turned, and looked at Kalas. He looked back. Nino stepped out from behind the window curtain, threw a knife at Clancy, which hit him in the chest. Clancy fell down, and died instantly.
"Dawson sent you," Christine said to Kalas.
"Hardly, Mrs. Salzer," Kalas replied, "Hardly."
He nodded to Nino, who pulled another knife and moved forward.
"Lovely," Nino stated before he stalked Christine, and grabbed her. Christine screamed and Nino cut her throat, killing her instantly.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"That's what you were after?" Nino asked, "A bunch of pictures?"
"That's right, Nino," Kalas answered, "Pictures of the ones like me, and the ones who watch them."
"Somebody's watching you?" Nino asked.
"Was watching me, Nino," Kalas corrected him, "He's dead, but now I've found the one who sent him: Jacques Vemas."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"You know, I have a great idea," Amanda told Duncan, "Why don't we just find a tropical island and just hole up for the next few decades."
"Just you and me, huh?" Duncan asked.
"Yeah," Amanda answered, "If the rest of the world wants to go to hell, let's let it."
Duncan sensed the Buzz. Methos appeared, waiting on the barge deck.
"I thought you'd be packed and on a plane somewhere else," Methos stated.
"See?" Amanda told Duncan before she told Methos, "I tried that already. Didn't work."
Duncan followed Amanda onto the barge, "What's up?"
"Clancy, the editor of the Tribune is dead," Methos announced, "So is Christine Salzer."
"How?" Duncan asked.
"I didn't do it," Methos answered, "Someone got there ahead of me."
"The disk?" Duncan inquired.
"Gone," Methos answered, "The computer was wiped clean."
"Then who was it?" Amanda asked.
"My guess is one of the Watchers—a local named Vemas," Methos answered.
"Has anybody spoken to him?" Duncan asked.
"Not yet," Methos answered, "but it wouldn't surprise me if he denied it."
"Well," Amanda replied, "a double murder isn't something most people would admit to. I'm glad it's over."
"Maybe it's not," Duncan interjected, "There's still someone out there: Kalas."
"How would he know about this?" Amanda asked, "I mean, I know he's dangerous, but aren't you being a little paranoid?"
"Maybe," Duncan answered before tasking Methos, "Tell me more about this Vemas."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"Clever," Methos stated, "We don't even know where he is, and even if we did, he'd feel us coming, and upload the files. I can't see that he's left any doors open."
"Just one," Duncan replied, reflecting on finding Vemas dead, encountering Kalas, and watching him dispose of his henchmen, Nino by snapping his neck.
"I was in Rome once," Methos stated, "93 AD, the Coliseum. I saw Christians facing the lions."
Both men sensed the Buzz. Richie, Tori and April arrived.
"What are you three doing here?" Duncan asked.
"We heard Clancy and Christine were dead," Richie answered.
"Yeah," Duncan nodded, "that's true."
"So, the worst is over?" Tori asked.
"Not really," Duncan shook his head.
"I knew it," Tori quipped, "Kalas?"
"I suspect so."
"While Vemas is also dead. Kalas killed him too," Methos spoke up, "I have to say: it's a helluva thing to be a martyr, MacLeod, and that's what Kalas wants. He's pushing all your buttons."
"Well," Duncan replied, "I'm open to suggestions. Enlighten me."
"Maybe Amanda's right," Methos stated, "you fight your best fight."
"What, every man for himself, and the hell with the rest?" Richie asked.
"That's what we're all thinking," Tori answered, "so what if the world finds out?"
"She's right," Methos chimed in, "Life is about to change. Civilizations rise and fall."
"This isn't about civilizations," Duncan stated, "This is about people! Amanda, Dawson, Richie, Tori...our world is not an ant farm."
"The passion of youth," Methos replied.
"Boys will be boys," April added.
"If you die, MacLeod," Methos spoke up, "Amanda will be free to date."
"That's a comfort," Duncan sarcastically replied.
"We've been in tight spots before, Mac," Richie assured his teacher, "and we'll get through this situation."
"Just like we always do," Tori nodded.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Amanda paced in the barge, waiting for Duncan to return. The tablet rang. Amanda answered it, "Who could it be?"
"Delightful to see you again, my sweet," Kalas replied as he appeared on screen.
"Sorry I can't say the same," Amanda replied.
"Put MacLeod on."
"He's not here right now, but I can take a message."
"Listen carefully."
Amanda proceeded to listen to his instructions as he gave them out.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Amanda arrived at the rooftops of a nearby building. She made her move, and Kalas blocked her attacks.
"Not very sporting," Kalas stated, "You should have learned your lesson. The kid had."
"The kid's name is Richie," Amanda replied, "and he hates being called a kid, or a boy, and you should have been more careful shaving, but I can finish the job."
She attacked, then retreated.
"Where to now, my sweet?" Kalas asked.
Amanda attacked again, then climbed onto the rooftop structure.
"Come on, Kalas," Amanda challenged, "You afraid of heights?"
Kalas climbed up, and the fight resumed. He grabbed Amanda's sword away from her.
Kalas turned to face Amanda, "Au reviour, my sweet, or should I say, goodbye."
Amanda jumped off the structure, "Some other time."
She grabbed the antenna cable and lowered herself down off the room, and ran off.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"Well, at least I tried to do something!" Amanda exclaimed after explaining what happened to Duncan.
"Nobody asked you to," Duncan replied, "Do you have any idea what happens if that disk goes public?"
"Yes," Amanda answered, "You stay alive."
"Amanda, I know you don't want to listen to anybody," Duncan insisted, "but you're going to listen to me."
He grabbed her arms, "Look at me! Stay out of this. Please!?"
"Is that the way you want it?" Amanda asked.
"Yes, I do," Duncan answered.
"Fine," Amanda scoffed, "I'm out of it."
She stormed out of the barge.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"I don't want to hear you don't know where he is," Joe told one of the Watchers, "You find him!"
Duncan entered the room, "Hey, Joe, relax. There are ten million people in Paris."
He looked around, realizing he had walked into a room full of Watchers, "I guess you guys can't be everywhere."
"Yeah, well, they have to be," Joe replied. Then as Duncan and the Watchers all stared at each other, "That's right, it's Duncan MacLeod. Anybody have a problem with that? Go on. Go on."
The Watchers turned back to their computers, tablets and papers.
"We can't kill what we can't find," Joe stated.
"So much for watching," Duncan chimed in.
Joe sighed, "He hunts us. We hunt him."
Duncan echoed Kalas, "No more rules."
"Come on," Joe told his immortal, "Let's go outside."
They moved towards the exit before they were outside the room.
"We didn't start this, Mac," Joe stated, "He did. Now, if you find him before we do, can you beat him?"
"Maybe," Duncan replied.
"If you fight to win."
"You'd better find that disk."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"Any news?" Duncan asked as he was gathered in the barge with Methos, Richie, Tori and Joe.
"Well, we know that Martin was on the Rue du Mars, near the Eiffel tower," Joe explained, "but that only leaves a thousand places Kalas could be."
"Any chance of finding him before the deadline?" Richie asked.
"Zip," Joe answered.
"So that is it then," Tori declared.
"I'm sorry," Joe told the immortals, "It's Kalas' play."
"Isn't that the truth?" Tori quipped.
The tablet rang once again.
"That's it," Methos declared as Tori and Richie stepped out of the barge.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Tori took some deep breaths as she eyed Richie and they were sitting on the deck of the barge, "Are you feeling okay?"
"Sort of," Richie answered, "Worried with the situation with Kalas."
"I know how you feel," Tori replied, "Duncan MacLeod might die, or it might be Kalas."
"Either way," Richie held Tori's hand, "He wins."
"You know," Tori returned the favor, "when you and Amanda were being held by Kalas, I was worried about you guys, especially you, given this was the second time this month and everything you went through this year."
"Oh, Tor."
"I saw you fight Kristov, and take his head," Tori stated in awe, "I've never been more proud. I love you, Richie."
"And I love you, Tori."
They kissed.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan walked down the foggy path, and he sensed the Buzz.
Amanda walked towards him through the fog, "Hi."
"Hi," Duncan replied.
"Look, uh, about what happened," Amanda worked the strength to apologize, "I really...I'm sorry."
"So am I," Duncan apologized in turn, "Forget it."
"No, uh, about everything," Amanda told him, "All these years, I've been a real pain in the ass."
"You could say that," Duncan replied, "More than once."
He stroked her cheek, "It was worth it."
"MacLeod, I...I know this is a little hokey, but I don't think Rebecca would mind," Amanda said "There was a time when a knight never went into battle without a lady's favor. So, I'd like you to have this."
She held up Rebecca's crystal, "For luck."
Then, she gave it to Duncan, "I just want you to know...because I really..."
Duncan echoed a previous conversation, "I know. You always have."
Amanda nodded, "Always."
She kissed him, "Always."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan climbed up the stairs to the platform of the Eiffel tower. Thunder rumbled in the distance.
"You're early," Duncan stated, noticing his opponent.
"I'm careful," Kalas replied before stating, "Well, MacLeod, nobody here but us, and I do adore the view."
"It's a good place to die," Duncan stated.
"So, what's it going to be?" Kalas asked.
"What do you think?" Duncan interjected.
"I think," Kalas answered, "Whatever happens."
They both drawn their swords.
"It's over," Kalas declared before both immortals began their duel.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
April, Richie, Tori, and Jack met up with Joe, Methos and Amanda.
"Has the fight started?" April asked.
"You guys are just in time," Joe answered.
"Mac's finally dueling with Kalas?" Richie quipped.
"Yeap," Amanda quipped.
Flash, Rick, Jedda and the Phantom arrived as well.
"You guys came here just in time," Tori told the four.
"I guess this is it then," Rick declared, "The moment of truth."
"Have faith in MacLeod," Joe told the group.
"Exactly what I had in mind," Flash replied.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan stabbed Kalas, "Hear that, Kalas? That's the fat lady singing."
He pulled his sword out, and swung at Kalas' sword, breaking the blade.
"You have me at a disadvantage, MacLeod," Kalas declared, "but remember, if you do kill me, you're finished too."
"Maybe it's worth it if it rids the world of you," Duncan replied.
"Stay noble, MacLeod," Kalas said, "It's what you're good at."
He threw his broken sword aside, "Do it!"
Lighting and thunder erupted around them.
"The Eiffel Tower," Duncan declared, "the world's biggest lighting rod."
He beheaded Kalas and took his quickening.
Duncan screamed and held up his sword, before he eventually dropped it, as he felt the full power of the quickening to where he could sense the computers at Kalas' hideout being fried to where the files on the disk were of no use, and many things around were destroyed, including TVs and glass of a car.
He could also sense the immortals that Kalas had previously killed: Paul, Gregor, Fitzcairn, among others. Now, they could all finally rest in peace.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Flash, April, Rick, the Phantom, Jedda, Jack, Tori, Richie, Amanda, Methos and Joe all watched the quickening from the exterior of the Eiffel Tower.
"Whoa!" April exclaimed.
"Talk about a huge lighting rod!" Rick added.
The group sheilded their eyes from the brightness from the spectacular Quickening.
"I've never seen anything like it," Jedda stated.
"More spectacular than any of my quickenings," Tori stated, "unless you count that double quickening."
"Same here," Richie muttered as he held Tori in his arms. She returned the favor, watching the quickening.
The group looked on until the quickening ended, and the Eiffel Tower lights went dark, along with the rest of Paris for that matter.
"Mac?" Tori called out.
"Oh man," Richie stated.
"I don't see him," Amanda asked, "Where is he?"
The tower's lights came back on along with the city of Paris. Amanda ran over to greet a ponytail less Duncan and kissed him.
"Mac, you made it!" Richie exclaimed happily.
"Well, that was a big one, wasn't it?" Duncan asked.
"You got that right," Tori quipped.
Jack proceeded to send a text to Janet, "Leader, I am pleased to send some good news: Antonius Kalas is finally dead."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan looked on as he was gathered at the barge with the Defenders, Richie, Jack, Tori, Amanda, Methos, and Joe.
"So, what'll we drink to?" Joe asked.
Methos held the champagne flute, "How aobut the wonders of modern technology?"
"To MacLeod," Richie held the champagne flute next, "still in one piece."
He handed the champagne flute to Amanda.
"So true," Amanda replied, "He's still in one lovely piece."
She handed the champagne flute to Duncan.
"I'll drink to that," Joe replied.
"Fitzcairn, and Paul," Duncan spoke up.
"Gregor too," Richie added.
"Of course."
"To old friends," Amanda toasted.
"And new ones," Duncan added, looking over at Methos.
"And to the Defenders of the Earth," Tori added in, "as well as the Intergalatic Union Agency."
"I'll drink to all that myself," Jack chimed in.
Everyone raised their glasses, "Cheers!"
Everyone took a drink.
"Oh, Mac, I, uh, thought you might be interested in this," Joe called to Duncan before holding up the destroyed CD.
Amanda gave out a fake yawn, "I'm sorry. Champagne makes me so sleepy."
"Ah, Amanda," Tori quipped.
"Time to leave," Joe told Methos.
"Oh no. Not on my account," Amanda replied, "Really."
"I'll have another then," Methos replied before she shoved at his shoulder playfully, "Tomorrow."
He took his coat from Joe, "Come on, buddy. Let's see what kind of trouble we can get into."
"Good night," Joe called to the others.
"Be good," Amanda replied.
Joe and Methos left the barge.
"Us Defenders have to return to Central City tomorrow," Flash spoke up, "So we have to turn in too."
"And I return to the academy as well in the morning," April added.
"We'll see you guys later," Rick said as the group said their goodbyes.
April and the Defenders left the barge moments later.
"As for me," Jack spoke up next, "Cassandra is waiting for me. I better be going."
"And we better get back too, don't you think, Richie?" Tori added in.
"Yeah," Richie nodded in agreement.
"IUA affairs?" Amanda asked.
"No," Richie shook his head, "We'll be around."
"We'll see you guys later," Tori added.
"See you," Amanda replied.
Richie and Tori left the barge, following Jack.
Duncan then turned to Amanda, "Um..."
He held up Rebecca's crystal, "Guess it worked."
Amanda took the crystal, "Yeah."
She cleared her throat, "You know, um, we've said some things we never said before, and..."
"You want me to take 'em back?" Duncan asked.
"No," Amanda answered, "Not tonight."
They shared a kiss.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Cassandra sighed as she paced around the room. She was wondering when her boyfriend was going to return, if he was going to return. Would the fate of immortals be doomed?
She sensed the Buzz. She turned towards the door, and saw Jack enter the apartment room.
"Jack," Cassandra asked, "did everything go well?"
"Yes," Jack answered as he held her arms, "you have nothing to worry about. Kalas is no more, and the secret of us immortals is safe."
Cassandra sighed with relief, "Oh, thank God."
"What did you want to do now?" Jack asked.
"Anything," Cassandra answered, "Just as long as you're with me."
They shared a loving embrace before they shared a passionate kiss.
