Defenders Chronicles: Highlander

By AmandaDoE

Chapter Forty-Two: Out of the Frying Pan

Kalas was preparing for his moment. His freedom. He had been waiting months for this, and now it was time. He saw a guard passing by, and then leapt out, grabbed the guard and threw him into the cell. Kalas broke the guard's neck, and closed the cell door behind him.

He made it to the cell next door, and unlocked the door, revealing his new assistant Nino. He had met him months ago during a prison riot, and rather than kill him, he chose to spare him, deciding he could use him for his plan.

"We go tonight?" Nino asked.

"You didn't think I'd leave without you?" Kalas interjected.

He motioned sharply for Nino to come. He complied as he grabbed the shiv from under his pillow, and followed Kalas.

Kalas and Nino made their way outside the prison in the prison yard. Nino ran at a guard patrolling the ground, and stabbed him with the shiv, and dropped the body in the shadows.

"Heh," Nino stated, "Ah, well."

"That's my boy," Kalas replied proudly.

Nino chuckled, "Right. Now, what are we supposed to do?"

He followed as Kalas jogged along the pathway to the tall prison wall.

"We await our benefactor," he answered.

"For what?" Nino asked, "Is he gonna bring us wings?"

"Shut your mouth," Kalas replied.

A grappling hook fell to the ground at their feet, with a thin line attached. Kalas grabbed the line and pulled until the thicker rope was attached to was pulled over the top of the wall and into reach. The rope had a carabiner near the end, which Kalas snapped onto a convenient hook in the wall.

"Right," Kalas stated.

He used the rope to scale the wall and reached the top, and Nino followed suit.

Kalas climed down the other side and jumped to the ground, then sensed the Buzz. He turned and saw Amanda, who stated, "It's about time."

"What now?" Kalas asked.

Amanda walked towards him, holding her sword, "Now you die."

She swung, but he dodged.

"All this, just to kill me?" Kalas asked.

"Give the man a cigar," Amanda replied sarcastically.

"Why?" Kalas asked, "You don't even know me."

"I know what you did to MacLeod," Amanda answered.

"Ah, he sent you," Kalas replied.

"Let's just say I owe him," she declared before swinging again. This time Kalas grabbed her hand and grappled for control of the sword. Behind them, Nino dropped to the ground, then stabbed Amanda from behind with his shiv. Amanda pulled away from Kalas and stumbled backwards from them both. Kalas picked up Amanda's grapple hook crossbow.

"You couldn't leave your little friend behind?" Amanda asked.

"Not friend. Weapon!" Kalas answered before he aimed crossbow, and shot grappling hook at her, then fled with Nino as the sirens sounded and the guards started yelling.

"Brilliant," he heard Amanda shout, "Brilliant!"

Richie and Tori were snuggling next to each other, with Tori wearing a light blue night gown and Richie being shirtless.

"How are you doing?" Richie asked.

"Enjoying the morning, hot shot," Tori answered, "Enjoyed last night?"

"You bet I have," Richie smiled, hugging his girlfriend, "Better than I have in some time, given all that had happened lately."

"No kidding," Tori snuggled on his chest, "You scared me during that exorcism. That was the loudest I heard you scream since your first Quickening after you took Mako's head."

"Don't remind me."

"Sorry."

"It's all right, babe."

They shared a kiss.

Suddenly, the phone rang. Tori answered it, putting the phone on speaker in case of an IUA situation, as Richie quickly got a shirt on, "Yeah?"

"We have a situation," Janet answered on the other end of the line.

"That's nothing new," Tori replied, "What's the situation?"

"Kalas has escaped," Janet explained, "Amanda, your immortal teacher, failed to eliminate him and they escaped."

"They?" Richie asked.

"Kalas evidently has a side kick this time around by the name of Nino," Janet elaborated that statement, "and they both broke out of prison."

"So, Kalas has a lackey?" Tori asked.

"Evidently," Richie chided.

"Nonetheless," Tori said to her mom, "we will need to help MacLeod, right?"

"Correct," Janet answered, "I'm bringing Agent Banks to help along with your cousin April."

"April?" Tori glanced up in surprise. Richie followed suit.

"The academy is allowing her to take part of this assignment," Janet answered, "Family emergency since your uncle and some of the other Defenders will also be in Paris."

"Really now?" Tori quipped.

"The Intergalactic Union Agency is one of the few agencies along with the Watchers and the Space Academy who are aware of immortals," Janet stated, "as well as the Defenders of the Earth, of course."

"So which Defenders can we expect?" Richie asked.

"Half of them," Janet answered, "to be more specific: Flash Gordon, his son Rick and daughter April, as well as the Phantom and his daughter Jedda. As far as the others are concerned, Mandrake and Lothar are on assignment somewhere else, helping Lenore with a mission, something that is confidential as it's in the family matter."

"I understand," Richie replied.

"So do I," Tori nodded.

"Whatever the case," Richie declared, "Any form of help for us, for MacLeod, is good."

"And Fitz will finally receive justice," Tori stated.

"Gregor as well," Richie chimed in.

Duncan looked up as he sensed the Buzz. He noticed as Amanda entered the barge, carrying paper grocery bags.

"Yoo hoo," she greeted him.

"Amanda," Duncan responded.

"I've got to hand it to you, MacLeod," Amanda stated, "you've got a memory like an elephant."

"What are you doing here?" Duncan asked.

"Ooh," Amanda cooed before she gave him a quick kiss.

Duncan noticed her nose stud, "Besides making a fashion statement."

"Isn't it great?" Amanda replied, "It reminds me of the old days and to answer your question, I'm here to make you dinner."

She set the bags on the table, and reached inside, "I have a '71 Montrachet, a Chateau Lafite '61, a '54 Y'Quen."

Amanda then pulled out the bottles, "Basically everything but a '68 Camaro."

"Amanda..." Duncan looked at her.

"Caviar, truffles, chanterelles, and my favorite, smoked goose," Amanda looked at the bags before looking over at Duncan, "and I know what you're thinking, but I think we can find a way to work it off."

"What are you doing here?" Duncan asked.

"I'm just here to make dinner for an old friend," Amanda poked around at the stereo buttons, "um, by the way, what happened to your lady friend...you know, um, doctor?"

"Her name's Anne," Duncan replied before he turned off the music, "and that's none of your business."

"Ohhh, it's a shame," Amanda replied as she took off her jacket, revealing her spaghetti strapped top.

Duncan gave up before he turned the music back on.

"So, what are we doing in Paris?" Rick asked.

"Janet asked us to keep an eye out and help Richie and Tori help out an immortal enemy Kalas, who broke out of prison," Flash explained, "In their first encounter, he tortured Richie, causing him to have a panic attack, from what both Janet and Tori mentioned here. Mandrake and Lothar are busy helping Lenore, and LJ is babysitting Kshin."

He then eyed Rick, "Since somebody refused to do so."

Rick rolled his eyes, annoyed.

"I don't know what your issue with Kshin is," Flash stated, "but if it's regarding the carnival incident, you should have let it go by now. Even then, we're going to get to the bottom of this when we get back to Central City."

Rick sighed. His dad had a point. He should have let this go by now. It didn't help that he was forced to stay behind with Kshin as well as the Zuffoids while the others fought Suramog at Mongo City. Either way, he wasn't fair, the situation wasn't fair. He hated that he was stuck with someone who nearly killed his father, as well as Mandrake, Phantom and Lothar with the four shrinking until they disappeared.

Then again, he wasn't being fair either. Holding that incident against Kshin longer than he should have didn't really feel right. While he had his aunts Abby and Janet, as well as his cousins Sara and Tori, and especially his sister April, Flash was the only parent he had left after Ming killed his mother. Yeah, he'll get this resolved. He hoped to resolve this with the Defenders as well as his therapist.

"Anyway, April is on her way to Paris as well," Flash spoke up after a pause of silence.

"April?" Jedda asked, "She got time off?"

"No, the academy and the IUA sent her to Paris to help us out," Flash answered.

"So, what can we expect again?" Rick asked.

"Kalas, and all else immortal," the Phantom answered.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"So, what do you think?" Amanda asked as she and Duncan were enjoying the dinner she made, "Not bad for potluck, huh?"

"You haven't lost your touch," Duncan answered, "Great wines, a two and a half star dinner, so why?"

"Why what?" Amanda asked.

"Why are you being so nice?"

"I am, aren't I?"

"Come on, Amanda, give. What do you really want?"

"Just to make you happy."

Duncan was not buying it, "Why?"

"So you won't kill me when I tell you what happened," Amanda finally relented. She took a sip of wine, then confessed, "I broke Kalas out of prison."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Richie and Tori were preparing to make their way to MacLeod's place as they leave the apartment. They saw April upon leaving the apartment.

"April," Tori greeted her cousin.

"Tori, Richie," April replied happily, "it's been awhile."

"It sure has," Tori replied before the two girls shared a hug.

Then April walked over to Richie and gave him a hug, "Good to see you in one piece given everything that had happened recently. From Felicia to the possession."

"Thanks," Richie smiled, "I wouldn't wish my experience I went through on anyone, especially the possession, but I'm doing better. I'm in therapy. I started in Seacouver, with Dr. White, and here, Dr. Burns is taking good care of me."

"That's good to hear," April replied.

"Kshin got punished after the Halloween party from what I was told by Mandrake," Tori explained.

"What did he do?" April asked.

"He made my costume inflate," Richie answered, "it got to the point to where I hit the ceiling. There's no telling what could have happened if the incident happened outside. The Phantom, Mac, Anne and Tori helped me deflate my costume, and I had to get another one."

"Oh man," April replied, "I'm sorry to hear."

"On the bright side," Richie quipped with his signature smile, "at least I got another racer costume."

"What made Kshin want to pull some sort of prank like that?" Kshin asked.

"I have no idea," Tori shook her head, "but Mandrake figured after Rick invented a microchip where something inflates via touch, gave Kshin the idea to pull that stunt."

"Figured," April crossed her arms.

"We need to get to Mac right away," Richie spoke up after a pause of silence.

"Right!" Tori and April replied in unison.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Duncan was slowly tapping the rim of the wineglass with his fork, stunned in silence of Amanda's revelation.

"Would you say something to me, MacLeod?" Amanda asked, not happy with the silence, "Anything. You know, get mad. Throw something. At least yell at me, and stop doing that!"

"There's no point," Duncan replied, "It's already done."

He tapped the wineglass again.

"You know, this sounds crazy," Amanda stated, "but I was really trying to do you a favor you know. I was trying to get Kalas out of your life."

"Two guards are dead because of it," Duncan informed her.

"I'm sorry! You know? That wasn't supposed to happen."

"Nothing's ever supposed to happen. You should have left it alone."

"I know that now," Amanda insisted, "but I kept thinking about all that times that you came through for me, and I thought now it's my turn."

Duncan threw his fork on the table before he stood up and faced her, "To do what, die for me? You stay away from him! You can't fight for me, and I won't allow you to die for me! Do you understand?"

Amanda took that in, and then she turned and left the barge.

Duncan turned around, and took back his seat before he examined Hamza's pocket watch, and placed it into a small chest on another table. Then, he sensed the Buzz, and grabbed his sword.

"MacLeod! MacLeod!" Joe exclaimed as he entered the Barge, "It's me, Joe Dawson."

"Joe, back off," Duncan replied, "There's someone else."

"I know," Joe replied as he turned, looked behind him as Methos entered the barge.

Duncan lowered his sword, "Methos."

Methos looked at Duncan, smirking.

"I'm sorry for the reception," Duncan apologized, "I wasn't expecting you, albeit you saved Richie a few days ago."

"Yeah, he told me," Joe quipped, "I missed an exorcism of an immortal, and I wasn't really expecting to come, not until this morning."

"What brings you to Paris?" Duncan asked.

"I called him," Methos answered, "and mentioned Richie being possessed and all that while I was at it."

"I know you wanted to see Methos," Duncan told Joe, "but six thousand miles is a long way to travel for a social visit."

"Yeah, well, it's uh, it's Watcher business," Joe replied, "It really doesn't concern you Mac."

"Whatever," Duncan stated while handing the men their drinks.

"I mean, if it did," Joe replied, "I – I would tell you."

"It's all right, Joe," Duncan informed his Watcher, "I've got my own problems right now."

Duncan and Methos sensed the Buzz.

"Not again," Duncan slightly groaned.

This time, Richie, Tori and April entered the barge.

"Mac, we have a problem," Richie announced, "Kalas..."

"Kalas has broke out of prison," Duncan cut him off, "I already know."

Richie, Tori, and April eyed Methos.

"Who's the new guy with Mac and Dawson?" April asked.

"April, this is the legendary immortal, Methos," Tori answered, "He helped us save Richie when he was possessed by an evil entity."

She eyed him, "And we cannot thank you enough for it."

"Is she..." Methos started to ask.

"I'm her cousin," April answered, "You'll meet my dad and brother shortly along with two other members of the Defenders."

"That sounds exciting," Methos replied.

"What about the others?" Joe asked.

"Mandrake is helping his sister Lenore, and Lothar is with him," April answered, "LJ is watching Kshin after Rick refused to do so."

"So, Flash, the Phantom, Rick and Jedda are coming?" Joe asked.

"Exactly," April answered.

"When did Kalas break out of prison?" Joe asked Duncan.

"Since last night," Duncan answered.

"Jack's on his way here too," April stated.

"The IUA knows what they're doing," Tori inquired, "They have suspicion regarding the Watchers, which my mom sent me through a text."

"They shouldn't get involved," Duncan stressed, "This is my fight."

"A hem!" Tori cleared her throat, "Richie and I are immortal like you, and so it Jack, and the Defenders know about immortals."

"Yeah, Fitz was immortal too, and so were Paul and Gregor," Duncan interjected, "and look what happened to them! Your teacher was the one who broke Kalas out! Kalas is my fight."

"True," Tori stated calmly, "but the Defenders and the IUA will be there for back up."

"Thanks," Duncan replied before he muttered, "Like it's really necessary."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Richie, Tori and April were at a parking garage. He was surprised to see this garage was capable of fitting a space ship like the one the Defenders had as they were about to come here.

"When should they be here?" Richie asked.

"Soon," Tori answered.

"More like anytime now," April chimed in.

The group noticed as the Terry landed at a safe distance in front of the trio. Minutes later, Flash, Rick, the Phantom and Jedda got out of the Terry.

"It's good to see you guys again," Flash greeted the trio.

"Likewise, Uncle Flash, Rick," Tori replied.

"So, what's this Kalas like?" Rick asked.

"He's bad news," Tori explained, "Antonius Kalas wants revenge on Duncan MacLeod for taking away his singing voice by destroying everyone and everything he cares about."

"That sounds very petty," April stated, "Over his voice of all things too."

"And it left a scar on his throat during that fateful fight too," Richie added, "and he's done a lot of things to us ever since he came into our lives."

"I bet he did," Flash replied, "for someone who is petty."

"He framed Anne of a couple of deaths, which got her suspended, but Mac quickly got that suspension reversed," Tori explained, "then he had some douchebag frame Joe of drugs, which had his bar closed, and Mac easily reversed that decision too."

"There's more to the story, isn't it?" April asked.

Tori nodded before continuing, "Kalas captured Richie and tied him up, making him watch two beheadings and innocent people being tortured, and threatening to mess with his vocal chords like what happened to him to make MacLeod suffer."

"What?!" April exclaimed, "Is this true?!"

Richie nodded, "I'm afraid so."

He covered his arms, trying to keep the thoughts from his head.

"Kalas made Duncan fall to his death in front of Anne," Richie stated, "then after we moved to Paris, Kalas took Fitzcairn's head, and tried to go after Methos."

"Until last night," Tori added, "Kalas was in prison after he killed a Watcher, Don Salzer."

"So we have our word cut out for us," the Phantom declared.

"You said it," April replied.

"How did Kalas escape prison anyway?" Flash asked.

"Amanda," Tori answered, "She caused Kalas to escape when she was trying to take his head. It didn't go well, and he is loose."

"The Quintessential Catwoman to MacLeod's Batman," Rick quipped.

"Correct."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Duncan sensed the Buzz as he was looking for Kalas.

"Ah, Monsieur MacLeod!" Maurice greeted his friend, "If you'd care to wait..."

"No, I wouldn't," Duncan replied before he moved past him to Kalas' table, "You should have stayed in prison, Kalas. Your time is up."

"Oh, you think so?" Kalas replied, "Look around, MacLeod. We don't do well in crowds."

"Then we'll take it outside," Duncan acknowledged the situation.

"Wrong again," Kalas declared before he looked behind Duncan. Duncan looked to see Kalas' assistant holding Maurice at gunpoint, "My show. I'll decided when the curtain goes up."

The assistant pushed Maurice outside, and Kalas followed them.

Duncan jumped from an open window at the side of the restaurant onto the assistant, knocked him down, and grabbed Maurice.

"No, no, no!" Maurice exclaimed.

"Get in there!" Duncan shouted, "Get in there!"

He pushed his friend through the doorway, and followed him in.

Moments later, they returned outside after Kalas had driven away.

"What was that about?" Maurice asked.

"It's a long story," Duncan answered before telling his friend, "Maurice, you have to get out of town."

"Impossible! The restaurant..." Maurice tried to object.

"It can wait," Duncan insisted, "Forget going home, forget your toothbrush, just get as far away as you can."

"Maurice is not one to leave a friend in trouble," Maurice replied, "and I think you have trouble."

"Now's not the time to be heroic," Duncan stressed, "Whatever it costs, I'll pay for it."

"Are we friends?" Maurice questioned, "Then don't insult our friendship. I don't need your money."

Duncan pulled some money out. Maurice sighed and took it.

"Do you have somewhere to stay?" Duncan asked.

"In the south," Maurice answered before stating, "For a good man, you seem to have many enemies. Perhaps one day you'll explain why that is, besides the Defenders?"

"Perhaps," Duncan answered.

He followed Maurice back inside the restaurant.

"We're sorry for your loss, ma'am," Jack informed Christine.

"Jack is right, Christine," Methos added, "and it doesn't change the fact that Don is dead, and nothing you do will bring him back. I know how you feel."

Christine turned, and faced the three men, "Do you, Adam?"

"Yes," Methos answered, "you're bitter and hurt, and you miss him terribly, I miss him too."

"Why wouldn't you?" Christine replied, "He gave you and your damn Watchers more time than he gave me, and it was my time, Adam!"

"You have a right to be angry," Methos assured her, "to grieve."

"Oh, you bet I'm angry," Christine stated retorted, "at you and your ugly little secret society."

"Is that how you really feel about them?" Jack asked.

"Yes," Christine answered.

"Don didn't think it was ugly," Joe told her, "He thought our work was important."

"Your work killed him," Christine stated, "Now this...this thing is free."

She shown the men the newspaper about Kalas' escape, "He'll live forever, and my husband is dead, and all you do is watch!"

"Immortals are a part of history," Methos said.

"They're part of the truth," Jack added.

"Don was interested in the truth," Methos added on.

"Don't tell me about the truth!" Christine exclaimed, "I trusted you. I confided in you, both of you."

She told Jack, "I barely know you though."

Then Christine declared, "Well now, I'm going to end it. I'm going to lift up the rock so everyone can see."

"That's not a good idea, Madam," Jack replied as he, Joe and Methos all were glancing at one another as she was talking.

"What are you saying?" Joe asked.

"You want the truth?" Christine answered, "I'm going to tell the truth. I'm meeting the editor of the Tribune. Tomorrow, the world is going to know about immortals."

"No," Joe protested, "You'll destroy everyone."

"He's right," Jack added, "Not just the bad, but the good too."

"There are no good ones!" Christine exclaimed, "It's evil, all of it!"

Methos grabbed a knife from the coffee table, "They are not all like Kalas."

He sliced his palm open, then wiped the blood away - - there was no wound, "You'll be destroying me too. I'm one of them, Christine."

"Me too," Jack stated as he sliced his palm and the same result happened, "We are immortal."

Christine looked at them in horror.

"All this time," Christine stated in shock, "You're one of those things, pretending to be one of us."

"Jack is a good immortal, Christine," Methos stressed, "and you've known me for years."

"No. Get out," Christine told the three men, "Get out of my house! You're finished, all of you."

"Wonderful," Joe stated as the men left the apartment, "That went well."

"Really well," Jack added.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Jack sent a text message to Janet as the men were now out of the apartment, "It was as you were suspecting, Leader. Christine Salzer is set to expose Immortals and Watchers, as she blames them for the death of her husband."

"What were you two thinking about?" Joe demanded.

"Honestly," Jack answered as he faced the Watcher, "I'm not sure at this point."

"We weren't thinking," Methos added, "We were improvising."

"By cutting yourselves open?!" Joe exclaimed, "Guess it took you five thousand years, three hundred years in your case, to figure that you."

"You're disappointed in us, huh?" Jack asked.

"Aw, come on," Methos chimed in, "Give us a break, will you? What did you expect? Einstein? Freud? Buddha?"

Joe sighed, "Forget it."

"Sorry, Joe," Methos apologized, "I'm just a guy."

"Same with me, Dawson," Jack added.

"I guess next you're going to tell me there's no Santa Clause, Methos," Joe said before he sighed again, "Look, what we have to worry about is what we're going to do about Christine."

"Do we need to do anything?" Jack asked.

"She is about to let loose in a major newspaper!" Joe exclaimed.

"With what?" Methos asked.

Joe realized something, "You got all Don's files."

"Every one," Methos answered, "I wiped the computer clean. He didn't keep anything at home. Christine's only got her word."

He scoffed, "People living forever, running around cutting each other's head off with swords?"

"Yeah," Joe added, "Who's going to believe her?"

"It'll be filed away with alien abductions and Elvis sightings," Jack chuckled.

"Well, just in case," Joe stated, "I think I'd better follow her."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Christine looked through the files of some of the immortals that she had on the disk Don left behind.

"So three immortals are agents of the Intergalactic Union Agency," Christine stated, "Rotten bastard. I hope you burn in hell."

She looked up as Joe appeared behind her.

"I wish you hadn't seen that," he told her.

"I'll bet you do," Christine replied before she ejected the CD from the computer.

"You know," Joe tried getting through to her, "Whatever you're thinking, Christine..."

He shook his head, "It's not going to bring him back."

"It'll make me feel a hell of a lot better," Christine replied.

"Please," Joe insisted, "give that to me, for everyone's sake."

"Go to hell," Christine replied before she left.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"So, not only we have to do deal with Kalas," Flash paced the room, "but the possibility of immortals being exposed?!"

"Yes," Janet answered as she appeared on screen of the television, "Jack is with Dawson and Pierson, or Methos, as I know you guys know who Pierson really is, anyway, looking into Christine Salzer."

"That's a real scary thought," Tori stated as she held Richie's hand. He returned her gesture.

"Yeah," Richie replied, "The IUA has three immortals in the agency, more that we are unaware of."

"Not to mention," Janet chimed in, "Jack's girlfriend Cassandra is also immortal."

Tori and Richie held each other's hands in worry.

"Why does this Christine Salzer want to expose immortals?" Rick asked.

"From what is observed," Janet answered, "Christine blames immortals for the death of her Watcher husband Don. It's her way of revenge."

"She should realize it won't bring her husband back," the Phantom replied.

"Listen, Danielle," Duncan talked to the jazz club singer, "I'm looking for Kalas. Have you seen him lately?"

"I don't know where he could be," Danielle answered, "To tell you the truth, I don't care. The guy gives me the creeps."

"Yeah, I know what you mean," Duncan replied, "What about his friends?"

"Friends?" Danielle quipped before she said, "He doesn't have any friends, so what's this about? He owe you money or something?"

"Or something," Duncan answered, "What about the bartender? Maybe I could talk to him."

"Gerrard?" Danielle replied, "I don't think he likes you."

"Do you care?" Duncan asked.

"You want his phone number?" Danielle asked in turn.

"No. His address," Duncan answered, "I want to surprise him."

"Okay," Danielle relented, "Forty two Rue la Guerre, Apartment Seven."

"Thanks."

Duncan started to leave, headed up to the staircase and then he sensed the Buzz. He drawn his sword and hid in an alcove, waiting tensely as footsteps approached cautiously down the stairs. The approaching immortal reached the alcove and both jumped forward to attack.

"Amanda!" Duncan exclaimed, realizing who the immortal was.

"MacLeod!" Amanda exclaimed, "What, are you trying to get killed?!"

"Me?" Duncan replied, "I thought you were Kalas. What are you doing here anyway?"

"I came to hear jazz," Amanda answered.

"Jazz."

"Yeah. You know, American music. Coltrane, Wynton, Miles..."

Duncan gave her a look.

"All right. I came looking for you," Amanda answered again. As a result, Duncan cocked an eyebrow skeptically, "All right, I came for Kalas, but you can be really irritating sometimes."

"Yeah," Duncan stated, "and you can stay out of this."

"Look, he's my problem too," Amanda replied.

"Yeah, ever since you let him out of jail."

"Wait a minute," Amanda argued, "That is below the belt. I know that I messed up and I have to fix it. You can't keep cleaning up after me."

"Amanda..." Duncan started.

"No! I'm not quitting," Amanda insisted, "Either we do this together or we do it separately. It's your choice."

"Oooh, you're irritating," Duncan replied.

They left the club, walking off together.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Duncan knocked on the door, "Gerrard, are you home?"

"You're wasting your time," Amanda replied, "Let me do it."

She picked the lock, then the door swung open, "Aren't you glad I came along?"

"Thrilled," Duncan replied before he entered the apartment, and looked around the messy room, "It's got that lived in look."

"Yeah, lived in by a pig," Amanda noted, "You know slobs leave things. Even if he's not home, he may have left something."

"He's home," Duncan walked in the bedroom and saw Gerard's dead body, "Or was."

Amanda joined him, "Well, now it's got the died in job."

Someone ran past them in the hallway.

Duncan started to give chase, pushing Amanda away from the doorway, "Get back!"

Duncan tackled the silver haired man. They struggled and rolled down the stairs. The man's gun went off. Amanda ran down the stairs and helped Duncan roll the now dead man over.

"Oh, damn," Duncan muttered.

"I hate when this happens," Amanda added.

"Let's go."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"You know, it's morning," Amanda stated, "We've been looking all night. I'm really tired. We're not going to find him. Face it, our one lead back to Kalas and you killed him."

"I told you," Duncan argued, "I didn't kill him."

"No, he fell on his gun," Amanda interjected.

"Yeah," Duncan stated.

"And it went off just like that?" Amanda asked.

"Just like that," Duncan answered. They both noticed something at the same time, "Company."

"Got it," Amanda replied before eyeing on man, "Guy on right side, red scarf?"

"No," Duncan eyed the other man, "left side, black jacket."

"Try not to kill this one," Amanda replied before she took off.

"Amanda!" Duncan called out, "No, wait!"

He saw the other man running away, and chased him. He seemed to have lost his target, but it didn't last long as Duncan grabbed a trash can lid and hit his target with the lid, "Found me."

The man swung at Duncan, who blocked with the metal lid, "Oooh, that must hurt."

The man kicked the Highlander down and pinned him, "Not good."

"By jungle law, the ghost who walks calls forth the strength of ten tigers!"

Duncan noticed yellow energy nearby before the man was knocked down. Duncan managed to get up, and noticed the Phantom pinning the man to a wall nearby.

"Phantom," Duncan eyed his savior, "Thanks."

"Hello, Highlander," the Phantom greeted his friend before Duncan walked over to the man, "Now, Sunshine, let's have a little talk."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Amanda managed to catch up with her target.

"Bonjour," Amanda greeted the man as she walked towards him, "What next, a little tea for two?"

She turned as two more thugs jogged behind her.

"Don't tell me, you're together, right?" Amanda asked before feigning a worried, dramatic expression, "Well, you're not going to hurt little ol' me, are you?"

She turned, kicked the first man before she was grabbed, and then she suddenly felt a syringe of liquid being injected into her neck, "Oh, Merde."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"Believe me, this'll hurt you more than it'll hurt me," Duncan said as he tried to get his guy to talk, "and the Phantom is quite the legend too. He can use his ten tigers powers to hurt you."

"Where is Kalas?" the Phantom demanded.

"I know you are working for him," Duncan added. Suddenly, he sensed the Buzz. He looked to see a car driving down the alley with an unconscious Amanda in the back of the car. The car pulls onto the streets and drove off, "Oh no."

The Phantom noticed, "Amanda?"

"I'm afraid so," Duncan answered.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"Damn it!" Joe exclaimed as they got out of the car, meeting with Flash and Jack in the process, "You wiped everything! You had all the files!"

"I thought I did," Methos replied.

"What happened then?" Flash asked.

"Apparently he doesn't," Joe answered, "What the hell was that, anyway?"

"Don and I were working on interactive database," Methos explained, "All our records in one handy, easy to access file."

"Well that's just perfect," Joe sarcastically replied, "The wonders of modern technology."

Methos smiled in response.

"Something funny, Methos?" Flash asked, crossing his arms.

"Yeah. Joe sounds just like Don," Methos answered, "He loved books. He really hated computers. I – I never thought he knew what a back up was, let alone how to make one."

"Glad you can laugh when you know your life is just about to be turned inside out," Joe replied, "Where are the others anyway?"

"They're helping Richie, Tori, April and the rest of the IUA on a mission," Flash answered, "and the Phantom is helping MacLeod with finding Kalas."

"Empires rise and fall," Methos told Joe, "Remember the Chinese curse."

"Yeah, May you live in interesting times," Joe replied, "Well, things just got really interesting."

Duncan arrived from the deck of the barge near the gang plank with the Phantom in tow, "That's one way of putting it."

"Something going on?" Flash asked.

"Kalas has Amanda," Duncan answered.

"Ah man," Flash replied, turning away, "Maybe Rick, Jedda, Richie, April and the IUA Agents can find them and rescue her."

"Perhaps," Methos stated.

"Besides, we've got another big problem, Mac," Joe informed the Highlander.

"You know the Watcher business that we were handling with Jack's help?" Methos asked.

"Yeah?" Duncan answered.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"You think Kalas might be here?" Rick asked.

"He could be anywhere," Tori answered, "Mom says that's his latest suspected hideout. Alpha Team, get ready to make our move."

"You got it, Tori," Jack replied.

"Where would be a great opening?" April asked.

"I see something," Jack answered as he noticed an opening to where Kalas could possibly be hiding out.

"So do I," Richie chimed in before he hurried to the suspected area.

"Richie, wait!" Tori exclaimed.

"I have a bad feeling about this," Jedda muttered.

Richie walked over to the area. He glanced around, trying to sense the Buzz.

"That's funny," Richie stated, "There's no one here."

Suddenly, he felt a blunt force hit him on the back of his head, knocking him out in the process.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"Team Alpha, let's move out!" Tori told the group.

The group arrived at a safe distance to find the man carrying an unconscious Richie on his shoulder, and taking him away.

"Richie!" Tori cried out. April, Jack and Rick grabbed her to stop her.

"Tori, no!" Rick exclaimed, "He'll grab you too!"

"You three hurry to MacLeod and the Defenders!" Jack instructed.

"What are you going to do?" Jedda asked.

"I'm going to spy further to rescue Richie and hopefully Amanda too," Jack answered, "it'll be fine. Tori's tracker is doing its charm, even when Kalas was in prison, and even after he broke out. He doesn't even notice."

"Come on, Tor," April told her cousin.

April, Tori, Rick and Jedda left the area.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"She's got it all," Duncan stated.

"Immortals, Watchers, the histories..." Methos elaborated.

"Everything," Joe chimed in.

"But this could start a panic," Duncan stated, "Witch hunts. Half the governments in the world will be hunting us."

"Even Richie, Jack and my niece would all be in danger," Flash added, "All immortals."

"Look, I've got every Watcher in France out looking for her," Joe assured them.

"For thousands of years, Joe," Duncan demanded, "you've kept this secret. What the hell happened?!"

"Don't blame Joe," Methos answered.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"So which is it," Amanda asked as she was tied with ropes to a chair, "am I dead, or am I bait?"

"You'll be the first to know," Kalas answered.

"I don't get it," Amanda stated, "What is this thing you have with MacLeod?"

Kalas walked over to her, "There are greater gifts than Immortality. You see this?"

He pulled his collar down to show her the scar on his neck, "MacLeod destroyed my gift. So now, I'll destroy everything he cares for, everything he loves."

"MacLeod doesn't love me."

"Really?"

"No. Let's forget about MacLeod. I can be very flexible."

"Hmmph. Very tempting," Kalas told Amanda, "but I spent centuries in a monastery. You're wasting your not inconsiderable talents."

They both suddenly sensed the Buzz. He looked up as Reynaud arrived with someone wrapped in a dark blue blanket.

"What do you have here?" Kalas asked.

"A spy," Reynaud answered, "He was spying out in our area, so I decided to bring him here."

Amanda perked up, upon hearing yelling.

"Is that..." Amanda muttered.

Kalas removed the cover, revealing Richie, who was gagged and his wrists were tied with a clothed rope behind his back and another clothed rope tied to his ankles.

"Ah, I recognize this boy," Kalas stated.

"Richie!" Amanda exclaimed in surprise.

"You know him too?" Kalas asked.

"He's my friend," Amanda answered calmly.

"He's immortal too as I noticed from him last time," Kalas stated, "and I had fun torturing him last time."

Richie was yelling through the gag while struggling through the bondage.

"Remove the gag," Kalas told Reynaud. The henchman complied.

Richie spat on the floor before he spoke up, "You think you're going to win, huh? MacLeod will stop you! He's good."

"Like I do not know that already, MacLeod's little buddy," Kalas replied.

"You haven't seen anything yet! I've taken out an immortal who kidnapped me earlier this month," Richie stated, "and he thought I was just a helpless boy."

Kalas chuckled before he eyed Reynaud, "Tie him up to the other chair!"

He scooted another chair next to Amanda. She looked on as Reynaud sat Richie on the chair, and tied him up.

"Oh, Richie," Amanda eyed her friend.

"It's not the first time Kalas and I met," Richie assured her.

"Watch them," Kalas told his thugs, "Don't talk to them. Don't touch them."

Kalas started to walk up the stairs, then he turned to his prisoners, "Bait! Both of you!"

Then he left the room.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"You think she's still alive?" Methos asked.

"He could use her against me," Duncan answered, "but he likes to keep his victims dangling."

Duncan and Methos sensed the Buzz.

"Mac!"

Tori arrived in a panic with Rick, Jedda and April in tow.

"What the hell happened?!" Flash exclaimed.

"Richie's been taken!" Tori exclaimed.

"What?!" Duncan exclaimed in an almost panicked tone himself, "That's just great! First, Amanda, now Richie!"

He paced the room, trying to calm himself, "This is the second time this month for Richie."

"Jack is tracking down the location," April informed the group.

"Apparently my chip I put on Kalas after he took Fitzcairn's head still worked after all this time," Tori stated.

"Will he be okay?" Jedda asked.

"I'm not sure," Duncan answered, still pacing the room, "Kalas also has Amanda. He'll probably use them as bait for me. One way or another, he'll contact me."

The phone rang, and Joe answered it, "Hello?"

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Jack managed to find himself at the area where Kalas had evidently had been hiding. His suspect had taken off again, but at least he knew where Richie and Amanda were.

"Tori's tracker seriously worked," Jack smirked, "Even with Kalas being the sneaky bastard he is, I'll be able to save my friends."

He was at a distance and saw both Amanda and Richie tied up in chairs, side by side. They were alive, probably going to be used as bait for MacLeod from what he was seeing.

"Hang on, you two," Jack muttered, preparing his taser.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Richie eyed Amanda as he was working to untie his restraints. The clothed bondage was harder with the ropes he was tied up with.

"Come on," Amanda called out to the thugs as she was trying to loosen the ropes around her ankles and wrists, "you know this is bad for my circulation. Can't you loosen them a bit?"

"Don't listen to her," the other thug told Reynaud.

Amanda kicked the ankle ropes at them, "Never mind. I guess they kind of slipped."

Richie managed to get the clothed ropes removed from his ankles despite the ropes underneath.

Reynaud picked up the rope, "You stay put."

"Relax, my hands are still tied, see?" Amanda turned sideways in chair to show her wrists still bound behind her back.

"I told you to stay put!" Reynaud exclaimed.

Suddenly, a taser appeared from out of nowhere, hitting Reynaud as Amanda and Richie sensed the Buzz.

"What the hell?!" Amanda exclaimed.

A dark haired man swung in and knocked out Reynaud, just as he got the taser off of him.

"Who are you supposed to be?" Amanda asked as she stood up from her seat.

"Nice to meet you, Amanda," the man replied as he was helping Richie getting untied, "My name is Jack, Jack Banks. Member of the Intergalatic Union Agency."

Amanda picked up Reynaud's unconscious body and tossed it and knocked the card table into the other thug. Richie knocked down the other thug and Amanda used her feet to break his neck.

"That's neat," Jack stated.

"Thank you," Amanda replied.

"We better get back," Richie suggested.

"Yeah," Jack replied, "Mac and Tori are definitely worried about you guys."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Tori looked on as it became dawn. Things were definitely intense. Her teacher and her boyfriend were taken by that monster, and the immortals were going to be exposed. Everything was going to come to an end if all immortals end up becoming exposed.

She sensed the Buzz, "Here we go."

The door swung opened, and to her delight, Richie was at her door, "Tori."

"Richie!" Tori smiled before sharing a hug, "Oh, baby! Thank God, you made it!"

"Jack got us out of Kalas' hideout," Richie stated.

"What about Amanda?" Tori asked.

"She went looking for MacLeod," Richie answered.

"I'm glad you're safe," Tori continued to hug her boyfriend after she closed the door, "You're here with me and that's all that matters to me right now."

"I don't know what the future holds," Richie declared, "but one thing's for sure, I'm not letting Kalas or anyone else bring me down anymore!"

"That's what I want to hear," Tori replied before they shared a kiss.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Joe and Flash walked up to Christine, who was sitting on a park bench. This was their last ditch effort to stop her from exposing all immortals.

"Mind if we sit?" Joe asked.

He sat down next to her. Flash sat down on the opposite side of Christine.

"My appointment's in fifteen minutes," Christine told the two men, "You're not going to talk me out of it."

"You realize what this will do," Joe told her, "I mean not to the Watchers, the IUA, the Immortals, the Defenders...the world."

"That doesn't matter," Christine was adamant in her choice, "This is evil. People have to know the truth."

She started to rise from her seat, but Flash grabbed her arm.

"I'm not about to let my niece or my immortal friends be in danger over you," Flash stated harshly.

"Then you need better friends," Christine replied.

Flash scoffed, "You are in no position to tell me who I can and can't be friends with. I can be friends with whoever I want!"

"Don't make us do this," Joe pulled back his jacket to reveal a fun at his waist, "Try to understand me. I can't let this happen! I don't have any choice!"

"Why didn't you tell me I could use guns?" Flash asked Joe before getting out his own gun, mistakenly releasing Christine from his grasp, "While I thought Joe said there's no need for violence in this negotiation, I'm all for this."

"Flash," Joe muttered.

"I have no choice either," Christine replied, not fazed by either men as she turned away towards the building.

"Please!" Joe exclaimed.

Christine started walking.

Duncan stepped into view, "Don't do this."

He stepped between the two men and Christine.

"Stop!" Flash shouted, trying to aim for Christine as well. He hit two times. First shot hit the wall and the second shot hit Christine's arm as Duncan tried disarming Flash, and eventually managed to do so after the second shot.

"MacLeod! Move!" Joe shouted before he fired his gun as well. Duncan took the bullet meant for Christine.

"Are you serious?!" Flash exclaimed, glancing down at Duncan in disbelief as Methos ran forward towards the Highlander.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"Well. Life as we know it is over," Methos declared.

"For you guys, Richie, and my niece, especially," Flash chimed in.

"Do you know what you just allowed to happen?" Joe asked Duncan.

"Yes," Duncan answered.

"Then why the hell did you do this?!" Flash demanded.

"Yeah, MacLeod," Joe added in, "why did you save her?!"

Duncan looked at him, then walked off without answering.

Flash sighed, "You know, if Kshin was here, he'd be asking Joe a bunch of more questions."

"More than likely," Joe nodded in agreement.

"He didn't save her, Dawson," Methos insisted, "He saved you."

Author's Note:

The conclusion to the Season 3 arc is up next, and Season 3 is going out with a bang!

Author's Commentary:

Then again, he wasn't being fair either. Holding that incident against Kshin longer than he should have didn't really feel right. While he had his aunts Abby and Janet, as well as his cousins Sara and Tori, and especially his sister April, Flash was the only parent he had left after Ming killed his mother. Yeah, he'll get this resolved. He hoped to resolve this with the Defenders as well as his therapist.

This is something you guys are going to see for the first chapter of the Season 4 arc where Rick finally buries the hatchet with Kshin regarding what happened in "The Carnival of Dr. Kalihari". I'll discuss more of that when we reach that chapter.

Personally, if Richie had been involved with Kalas too, without dying of course, then Season 3 would have been the perfect season, but I still loved the season for what it was.

I didn't have much planned for Gregor Powers after the fact. In case you haven't read it, Kalas beheaded Gregor, which was something Richie had to watch while being tortured and held captive by Kalas in the chapter "Song of the Executioner."

The goal here is to have the Defenders of the Earth more involved with MacLeod and co, and this is one example.

Even though Amanda and Richie can handle themselves, I felt it wouldn't make sense to make Jack split from the others for no good reason. I gotta say, the final product is a lot better than the rough draft I've written.

Another good example of the Defenders mixed with MacLeod and co.
