Defenders Chronicles: Highlander

Chapter Thirty-One: The Child
"What do you mean you don't like it?" Duncan asked.
"No, no, no," Richie elaborated himself, "I never said I didn't like it. I just said it's not my thing."
"I'll admit that it's not my thing either," Tori shook her head.
"There's nothing in the world like an old wooden ketch," Duncan stated.
"Oh sure," Richie chimed in sarcastically, "you know, painting, scraping the hull, cleaning the barnacles...and that's before you hit the water."
"Yeah," Tori quipped, "it's for some people, but it's not for everyone."
"Have you ever wanted to stand at the helm and feel the wind in your face?" Duncan asked.
"I sometimes feel that when I am out surfing," Tori answered, "it does feel good every so often."
"Sure, I have," Richie added, "Doing ninety down the I – 5 on top of twelve hundred cc's of bored out Harley."
"Last of the red hot romantics," Duncan stated, "a wooden boat is alive...it speaks to you."
"Well, so does fiberglass, Mac," Richie stated, "and it says low maintenance."
"Aren't you gonna buy it?" Tori asked.
"No," Duncan answered before he climbed down the boat, "Hull's full of dry rot."
"What do you mean hull's full of dry rot?!" Tori demanded, "You knew that all along?"
"You son of a bitch," Richie added, more or less amused as he proceeded to join Tori and they climbed down the boat as well, "You made us come all the way down here and you never even wanted to buy the boat."
"That's a dud," Tori quipped.
"It's all part of your training," Duncan told the pair.
"What?" Richie and Tori asked in unison.
"You know," Duncan elaborated further, "a little more culture in your lives."
The three sensed the Buzz.
"Be careful," Duncan told them before splitting off from Tori and Richie.
He managed to go under the pier, looked around at first, before he found a little boy with blonde hair hiding. This must be the immortal.
"Don't be afraid," Duncan called out to the kid as he assured him, approaching the ladder, "I'm not going to hurt you."
"That's what you all say," the kid replied before he started to turn away.
"Look at me," Duncan said. The kid complied and he introduced himself, "My name's Duncan MacLeod. Give me your hand."
He extended his hand and the kid took his hand, and climbed down from his hiding spot.
"What's your name?" Duncan asked.
"Kenny," the kid answered.
"It's going to be okay, Kenny," Duncan assured him as they walked down the deck and met up with Richie and Tori, "It's all right."
"Where is he, Mac?" Richie asked.
"You're looking at him," Duncan glanced at Kenny.
"But he's just a kid!" Tori exclaimed in surprise.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Tori glanced down at Kenny as he sat down on a weight bench while she sat down next to Richie at another bench in front of him. Duncan was standing.
"So, where are you from Kenny?" Duncan asked as he approached the edge of the bench.
"Wisconsin," Kenny answered.
"You're a long way from home," Duncan stated, "Is that where it happened?"
"Yeah," Kenny explained, "Four years ago. I was ten. My mom and dad took me out for my birthday. A drunk driver hit our car."
"When did you know?" Duncan asked.
"When I woke up," Kenny answered, "There was a sheet over me. I could hear the policemen talking. They said too bad I was dead."
"What about your folks?" Richie asked.
"The car was all on fire."
"So you ran?" Tori asked.
"Yeah."
"Did you meet any of us?" Duncan asked.
"Sometimes. They mostly tried to kill me," Kenny answered, "Then I met Frank. He showed me how to fish."
"Where's Frank?" Duncan asked.
"Dead," Kenny answered, "Some guy cut off his head. I thought you guys would kill me, too."
"You don't have to worry about that," Duncan assured him.
"Yeah, it's okay, bud," Richie added, "You'll be fine."
Tori pursed her lips and nodded. She couldn't really promise anything until she knew she was in the clear about Kenny.
"This place is cool," Kenny said as he sat up and looked around the dojo. He looked at the weapons, "These things all yours?"
"Yeah," Duncan answered.
"Can I touch em?" Kenny asked.
"Go ahead," Duncan answered.
"I'm going to make a phone call," Tori told the guys.
"Yeah," Duncan nodded.
"Go ahead," Richie added.
Tori headed up the stairs to where she'd be out of Kenny's hearing area. Then, she got out her phone and dialed a few numbers. She was supposed to contact Jack whenever suspicious immortals arrived at their area.
"Jack? It's Tori, and we have a new immortal, but I'm not sure if it's a big deal."
"Of course it's a big deal, Tori!" Jack exclaimed, "You know how it is with us immortals, yeah?"
"I know, I know," Tori replied, "That's not what I mean."
"Then what did you mean?"
"This immortal is a kid."
"A kid?!" Jack exclaimed in surprise. Then there was a pause of silence before Jack spoke back up, "Just who exactly is this kid with you guys?"
"His name is Kenny," Tori answered, "he claims he is from Wisconsin."
"I don't know where he's from, Tori," Jack declared, "but Kenny is not what he seems to be!"
"Jack, he's just a kid."
Jack scoffed in response, "Like I don't know what he looks like. That lunatic kid immortal took my friend Frank's head."
There was another pause of silence as Tori processed what her fellow IUA agent informed her.
"Look, Tori," Jack advised, "just be careful. Tell MacLeod and Richie to be careful too. This Kenny is bad news."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"You can stay here tonight," Duncan told Kenny as he prepared a make shift bed for him on the sofa, "We'll find something better for you in the morning."
"Um, I get really scared sometimes," Kenny said.
"That's all right," Duncan assured him, "You're safe now."
The two heard a knock on the door.
"What's that?" Kenny asked.
"Oh, that's Anne," Duncan answered, "Don't worry. She's a friend of mine. We're going out tonight."
"You're leaving?" Kenny asked.
"Don't worry," Duncan assured him again, "Richie and Tori are coming over to stay with you. Oh, and Kenny, be careful what you say in front of Anne. She doesn't know about us."
He opened the door and greeted Anne, "Hi."
"Hi," Anne replied as she entered the loft.
"You look great."
"Thanks," Anne replied before she glanced at Kenny, "Oh, you have company."
"Oh, that's Kenny."
"I'm his cousin." Kenny spoke up.
"Second cousin."
"I didn't know you had family in town," Anne declared.
"I'm from Wisconsin."
"He's visiting." Duncan said.
"Well, hi, Kenny," Anne introduced herself before she shook his hand, "I'm Anne."
"Hi," Kenny replied before asking, "Is this your girlfriend?"
"I'm working on it," Duncan answered.
"So, is, uh, is Duncan showing you a good time?" Anne asked.
"Well, he just got here," Duncan answered, "but, um...I think we should go."
"Um, it's really none of my business," Anne asked, "but isn't he just a little bit too young to be staying alone?"
"Richie and Tori will be coming here to watch him," Duncan answered.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Richie hugged Tori as Kenny was playing with a robot toy. Tori looked at him.
"I don't think he likes this," Tori whispered.
"We better take it easy," Richie suggested.
"Good idea."
The couple broke apart.
"How do you stand it?" Kenny asked.
Tori whispered something to Richie before they broke apart.
"Stand what?" Richie asked, confused.
"Knowing you won't get any older?"
Tori and Richie only glanced at him.
"Well, we try to think of the good things," Richie answered.
"Like what?"
"Like uh, I'll never have arthritis," Richie answered, "I'll get to keep this hair forever."
"Looking at the advantages we have," Tori chimed in.
Kenny stood up, "It's different for you two. You guys are almost grown ups. If the crash hadn't happened, I'd be older, too. A lot older."
"Yeah, about fourteen," Tori quipped.
"Look, Kenny," Richie assured him, "it happened. You gotta stop beating yourself up about it."
Tori glanced away, as if she knew something about Kenny that Richie didn't.
"All right, Kenny," Richie spoke back up, "Maybe you're never going to have some things, but you might live a thousand years."
"As a ten year old?" Kenny scoffed, "Perfect! I'll be a kid all my life – always running, always hiding! I'll never be able to fight worth a damn!"
"Even small guys can fight, Kenny," Richie said, pointing his finger at him, "I tell you what. How about I show you how to handle yourself?!"
"Really?" Kenny asked.
"Are you sure about that?" Tori asked, crossing her arms.
"Of course," Richie nodded, "it'll be no sweat."
"All right," Kenny replied.
"Give me five."
Kenny slapped Richie's palm.
"Right on brother." Richie replied.
Tori and the two young men sensed the Buzz.
"Duncan," Kenny suspected.
"Maybe. Look. I'm gonna be right back," Richie told Tori and Kenny, "Tori, I know the traditional stuff is not your thing, but I want you to keep an eye out on Kenny while I check this out."
Tori rolled her eyes, "Seriously?"
Richie made it to the elevator, and left to find a man waiting for him. He approached the mysterious man.
"Who the hell are you?" the man asked.
"I'll be the one asking the questions," Richie replied.
"I'm Dallman Ross," the man introduced himself, "if that means anything."
"Not to me."
"Where is the boy?" Ross asked.
"Get outta here," Richie refused to answer.
"You don't know what he is." Ross stressed.
"No," Richie stepped forward, "but I know what you are."
"I don't want to kill you," Ross said, "Please, just get out of my way."
"Not a chance," Richie posed, preparing to attack.
"You're a fool," Ross replied before he warned Richie, "I'll be back. Next time I'll have him, and anyone else who gets in my way."
Richie looked on as his opponent left. Then, he turned and walked across the dojo to the elevator, and lowered the gate.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"Did you get a chance to see him?" Duncan asked, pacing the room, walking over to him.
"Richie scared him away," Kenny answered.
"I told you," Richie stated, "he said his name was Dallman Ross."
"Any idea why he's after you?" Duncan asked. Tori pursed her lips, remaining silent for the time being.
"Because I'm little," Kenny answered, "easy to kill."
"There's nothing else?" Tori asked.
"Nothing," Kenny answered.
Tori knew that was a lie, at least that was what Jack told her. She decided to wait until he actually does something to make her move. She doesn't believe Jack was lying, but she had to see for herself what Kenny was capable of.
"Kenny," Duncan told him, "we got lucky last night. Richie, Tori, and I won't always be there."
"He'll come again," Kenny said, "Richie said so. He'll kill me!"
"Then we'll have to find a way to keep you safe," Duncan said, as he stood up and walked to another area of the loft "I know a priest that runs a church school."
"You're sending me away?" Kenny asked, "I don't want to live with a priest."
"You know about holy ground?" Duncan asked. Kenny nodded.
"Then you know it's the only place they can't come for you," Duncan stated as he sat down.
Kenny nodded again, reluctantly, "Are we leaving today?"
"No. We'll go tomorrow," Duncan answered, "Tell you what...today's your day. We'll do whatever you want to do."
"Can we go fishing?" Kenny asked.
"Sure," Duncan relented.
Duncan took Kenny to Crystal Lake to go fishing.
"So, this is where Frank brought you?" Duncan asked as Kenny arrived next to him among the rocks.
"Yeah," Kenny answered, "I miss Frank. He showed me how to cast...everything."
"Why don't you teach me?" Duncan suggested.
"Sure," Kenny answered before he handed Duncan a rod.
"Where do we start?" Duncan asked.
"First you gotta put the rod together," Kenny answered, demonstrating how to put together the rod. Duncan did what he was supposed to do, "Yeah. You're good at this."
"Well, I've got a good teacher." Duncan replied.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"I'll go get some feathers for the flies," Kenny told Duncan before making his way to his bags.
"Some feathers?" Duncan asked.
"Yeah," Kenny answered, "Frank taught me. It works every time. Duncan? Did you know every day you fish adds a year to your life?"
He recalled taking Frank's head and quickening during another fishing trip. He started to pull his short sword out of a duffle bag, preparing to take Duncan's head.
Anne appeared from behind the woods, much to his disappointment and surprise as he quickly shoved the sword back out of sight and rejoined Duncan.
"So where are the feathers?" Duncan asked.
"I couldn't find them," Kenny answered.
"Hey!" Anne greeted the two boys, carrying a picnic basket.
"Hey. What's that, lunch?" Duncan asked.
"Oh, strictly backup," Anne answered as she carefully walked down the rocks to meet up with Duncan and Kenny, "I'm sure a couple of tough guys like you can outsmart a few tiny creatures with the brains of a flashlight. Hey, Kenny."
"Hi," Kenny replied, sullenly.
Duncan looked at him disapprovingly.
"You know," Anne looked at him, "I can't remember the last time I went fishing. I don't think I've ever been fishing."
She looked at Kenny and asked, "Maybe you can teach me?"
"I said I'd teach Duncan, not you," Kenny replied rudely.
"Hey, Anne's a friend," Duncan chimed in.
"Your friend, not mine," Kenny retorted before he walked off.
Duncan decided to wait until he got back to the dojo to talk to Kenny about his rudeness. Kenny walked to some branches from a distance to watch the couple.
"Whoa," Anne asked, "is he okay?"
"Yeah," Duncan answered.
"Hi," Anne greeted her friend/lover.
"Hi," Duncan replied. They tried to kiss, miscommunicate, and Duncan ended up kissing her cheek.
Anne laughed and said, "Let's try that again."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"You want to talk about it?" Duncan asked as he followed Kenny inside the dojo.
"Talk about what?" Kenny retorted.
"You know what I mean," Duncan answered firmly, "Why'd you treat Anne that way?"
"It was supposed to be the two of us," Kenny stated, nearly whining.
"Kenny, Anne's trying hard to be nice," Duncan told him as he entered the elevator with Kenny, "What's the problem?"
"I just don't like her, okay?" Kenny answered.
"Well, I do," Duncan replied playfully, "Got it?"
He poked Kenny in the chest with the net, "Huh?"
"Okay," Kenny replied.
"Hey."
"What?"
"Richie and Tori are going to be upstairs," Duncan informed him, "They'll be staying with you for awhile."
"What for?" Kenny asked.
"Because," Duncan answered simply. He exit the elevator, and pulled the grate down for Kenny.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"What did Jack say about Kenny?" Richie asked.
"He said that Kenny was bad news," Tori answered, "saying that he took his friend's head previously."
"Maybe it's a different Kenny," Richie suggested.
"I don't know," Tori shrugged her shoulders, "Jack wants me to keep an eye out on him. He seems innocent enough, but it's precautionary."
"Right," Richie rolled his eyes, "of course."
"Better to be safe than sorry, right?"
"You're right."
They both sensed the Buzz.
"Here we go," Tori stated. They turned to see Kenny.
Tori looked on as Richie trained Kenny, keeping her eye out on the kid immortal.
"Okay, so somebody comes at you from behind," Richie stated as he stood behind Kenny and grabbed him, "What are you gonna do?"
Kenny reached down and grabbed Richie's leg and pulled.
"Right," Richie replied. He fell over onto his back, then used his feet to knock Kenny down, "No, that's no good, Kenny. You gotta really twist that foot. You gotta be quicker."
"It's no good!" Kenny exclaimed as Richie helped him up, "I'm too small."
"You'd be surprised on how many kids out there are special," Tori stated, "they don't start their fame right away."
"It's okay," Richie encouraged Kenny, "You gotta keep trying. You can't learn it all in one day. Now, come on. Let's do it again."
"What's the point?" Kenny asked as he picked up a bottle of soda from a nearby stool, and took a swig, "Look at me, Richie. I'll never be able to drive a car, never be old enough to have a woman. I'll never be able to fight worth a damn!"
He slammed the bottle back onto the stool, knocking the other bottle off and breaking it, "Oh man...I can't do anything right!"
"It's okay, Kenny," Richie replied, "It can happen to anybody. Look, uh, why don't you go relax, chill out, take a break, and uh, I'll clean this up, we'll get back to work, okay?"
Kenny moved away as Richie started cleaning up the area.
Tori eyed Kenny as he looked at a sword display on the wall.
"What are you doing?" Tori muttered.
"You gotta trust me, Ken," Richie encouraged Kenny, "You gotta hang in there. You'll get the hang of it."
Richie's words drowned out Tori's mind as she saw Kenny taking the sword out of the display, and he was about to take Richie's head.
"What are you doing?! Drop the sword!" Tori demanded. She grabbed Kenny from behind and disarmed him.
"Tori, what are you doing?!" Richie demanded.
"You might wanna take a look," Tori answered, "this kid was about to take your head with the sword he took out of display."
Richie saw the sword that was on the floor. He tried opening his mouth, shocked at what he just realized.
"Maybe Jack was on to something," Tori stated, eyeing Kenny. He glared at her, disapprovingly. The three sensed the Buzz.
"Let's not say anything to Mac," Tori stood up and released Kenny from her grasp, "for right now."
"Good idea," Richie nodded in agreement, "We'll ask Joe to verify more information about our guest."
Tori nodded.
Then, Duncan entered the loft, "Hey, guys, what's up?"
"Mac, how're you doing?" Richie asked innocently, "We're just..."
"We're teaching Richie a few things," Tori lied. She grimaced as she hated lying, albeit it was necessary.
"Learning a lot?" Duncan asked Kenny.
"Yeah," Kenny answered.
Duncan proceeded to take the sword from him, "Maybe we should use something else, huh?"
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"What if Kenny was just playing?" Richie asked.
"That didn't looking like playing, Rich," Tori replied, crossing her arms, "he looked like he was about to take your head, and we've seen enemies like that. Yeah, Kenny looks innocent. He is an immortal child, but as we seen before, things aren't what they seem to be."
"Well, what exactly is it about Kenny that fits that bill?" Richie asked.
The two looked to see Joe open the elevator door, "Hope I'm not interrupting a lover's spat."
"Not exactly," Tori sighed, "there's an issue about an immortal Jack told me to look after."
"You mean, this boy you found," Joe stated, "this Kenny..."
"Yeah?" Richie inquired.
"He's big trouble," Joe stated. Just as Tori feared, and what Jack was trying to inquire the whole time. Joe was a Watcher, so he'd definitely know about immortals such as Kenny.
"How much trouble could he be?" Richie asked, "He's just a kid, Dawson."
"Yeah, right." Joe stated, "How old did you say he was?"
"Ten," Richie answered, "Fourteen, really."
"Try more like eight hundred and fourteen."
"He's more immortal than we thought," Tori stated, "He tried to take Richie's head earlier, and he makes Kshin look like an angel."
Richie looked down in shock, "That bastard. That lying bastard."
Tori touched his shoulder, "Don't get too hard on yourself."
"Sorry for not believing you earlier, Tor," Richie apologized.
"You didn't know," Tori assured him, "Jack made me aware of Kenny."
"He's outlived a lot of immortals," Joe revealed, "Let me guess: when you guys found him, he was hiding somewhere. He was scared. He was crying. He said an immortal killed his teacher. That's his MO. When people let their guard down, that's it."
"Just as what nearly happened to us," Tori stated. Richie shook his head in disbelief, "Are you sure about this?"
"Everyone who's taken Kenny in has one thing in common," Joe confirmed it, "they're dead."
"Like Jack's friend," Tori nodded.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"Duncan, you know," Anne stated as she held hands with Duncan at the park, "uh, forget it. He's your family, and I have been known to open mouth and insert foot, so..."
"I think we need a rule here," Duncan stated.
"A rule?" Anne asked. Duncan and Anne were both face to face.
"Yeah," Duncan answered, "that you never have to hedge with me."
"Okay. Thanks," Anne replied, "All right. I, uh, I think your cousin is one heck of a troubled kid."
"He's had a tough life," Duncan interjected, "Had to grow up fast."
They looked to hear a boy cry out for help. They saw Kenny attacking another boy at a park.
"What are you doing?" Duncan asked as he pulled Kenny off of the kid.
"He wouldn't lend me his skateboard," Kenny answered.
"Wait for me over there." Duncan instructed, "Now!"
Kenny complied.
Duncan hurried to Anne as she helped the kid sit back up.
"Okay. You're gonna be fine," Anne replied to the kid, "You should go home. Why don't you take it easy, okay?"
The kid left as Anne turned to Duncan.
"You know," Anne suggested, "there's a terrific child psychiatrist at the hospital. I can get Kenny in there right away."
'Maybe," Duncan replied, "I'll think about it."
Anne scoffed before she stated, "All right. I really think he should see someone."
"I'll talk to him," Duncan informed her.
"Okay. Good idea," Anne replied, "I need to get back to the hospital. I'll see you later?"
"Yeah. I'll see you later," Duncan nodded before walking over to Kenny and asking, "So, you want to tell me what that was about?"
"I told you," Kenny answered, "He wouldn't lend me his board."
"That's not good enough," Duncan stated.
Kenny sighed, "Well I don't know. I guess I just lost it."
They both sensed the Buzz, looked around and saw Dallman Ross nearby.
"He's come for me," Kenny announced.
"Come on," Duncan grabbed Kenny's arm and they started moving away from the park.
"I'm due back at the hospital in about an hour," Anne told him as she joined them, "I can make that call."
"Let you know later?"
"All right. Don't leave it too long."
"Yeah."
Duncan and Kenny were outside mission near the park.
"Where are we going?" Kenny asked.
"To holy ground," Duncan answered, "You'll be safe there. Now, you sit on the steps and wait until I get back."
"What about you?" Kenny asked.
"I'll take care of this," Duncan answered before he urged him, "Go on."
He left Kenny at the church and went to meet up with Ross in foggy area nearby.
"Dallman Ross?"
"Yes," Ross replied, "and you are?"
"Duncan MacLeod. Come for the boy?"
"So, he has two of you protecting him now."
"One, two...the answer's the same."
"He's using you, MacLeod," Ross stressed, "just like he used me. He can't be allowed to live. I've chased him for too long."
Both men drawn out their swords as Ross continued, "I can't let anyone get in my way."
Ross attacked Duncan, who dodged the attacked and both men landed a few blows.
Duncan stepped back, "I'm not your enemy, Ross. Leave the boy alone and walk away."
"I can't," Ross replied before he attacked again. Duncan fought back and eventually disarmed Ross, "Get down."
Ross groaned in response.
"Why?" Duncan asked.
"He killed my wife," Kenny explained, "We treated him like our own son. We loved him."
Duncan lowered his sword and stepped back, "This one's on me...but you leave the boy alone."
"Watch your head, MacLeod," Ross called out as Duncan walked away before talking to himself.
Duncan returned to the area near the park for Kenny to find that he was gone.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Kenny arrived at the alley. That was where Dallman Ross was at. He was going to get his head. With his sword in hand, Kenny climbed down the fire escape onto metal staircase, and snuck down behind Ross.
"Almost got him," Kenny muttered.
"MacLeod?" Ross called out, probably sensing the Buzz.
Moments later, Kenny beheaded Ross. He felt the strong surge of his quickening.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"I'm sorry," Joe offered his condolences, "Ross was a good man."
Duncan recalled seeing Ross' headless body earlier that day. Kenny must have taken his head. Joe was standing near the elevator door. Richie and Tori were standing side by side while Duncan was near the fridge.
"He was no better than the rest of us," Duncan stated, "He was there to kill Kenny."
"Well, he had a reason," Joe argued, "This Kenny is evil, MacLeod. Old evil."
"Think upon the lines of Ming the Merciless, Doctor Damian Dark, to name a few," Tori chimed in.
"I don't think Kenny would be some sort of tyrant," Duncan argued, "If he's evil, then so are we! Eight years, eight hundred years – – makes no difference. He's doing what we all do. He's fighting for his life."
"Mac, he's a lying little bastard," Richie stated, "He sets up people who try to help him."
"He has to!" Duncan stressed, "That's the only way he can survive. He thinks every Immortal is his enemy, so he kills them before they kill him. Let me ask you something, Richie, what would you do?"
"I don't know?" Richie bluntly answered.
"Yes, you do!" Duncan interjected, "What have you and Tori been doing all this year: knitting? You've been learning to fight so you can kill, so you can survive. That's all Kenny's doing. He wants to live. There can be only one. You two know it, I know it...and Dallman Ross knew it."
"Let's hope the immortal who gets the prize is not evil like Kenny," Tori stated, crossed her arms, "or possibly the likes of Zorelda, Ming or Doctor Dark or we'll be in big trouble."
"What about his wife?" Joe asked.
"It's the same for all of us, Dawson," Duncan answered, "It makes no difference – – man or woman."
"His wife was mortal," Joe chimed in, "Just in the wrong place at the wrong time. She kept Kenny from killing Ross. She died for it."
Duncan considered this briefly, then he grabbed his coat and ran for the elevator.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Anne entered the garage, and walked towards her car. She turned in shock, noticing a car coming towards her. She hit the ground for a moment, just as the car turned away and then she got up and started running again after the car chased after her.
Duncan suddenly appeared and pushed Anne out of the way.
"Get up!" Duncan told her.
He helped her to her feet as the car circled back. They ran and the car was after them. They ducked around a parked car.
"Are you okay?" Duncan asked.
"Yeah," Anne asked, "I think so."
Duncan looked up to see the perpetrator behind the attack, "Get back to the dojo."
"Where are you going?" Anne asked.
"Stay with Richie and Tori," Duncan instructed.
"No!" Anne shouted as he left the garage, "Duncan, I'm all right! Leave it to the cops!"
She noticed her wrist, which was hurt in the midst of the trouble.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan hurried out of the garage, looking for Kenny.
"Kenny!" Duncan called out, "Kenny!"
He was stopped by a nearby paramedic, probably someone Kenny manipulated along the way, "Maybe you should pick on someone your own size?"
"I don't have time for this," Duncan stated before he knocked down the paramedic, "Sorry."
He then took off after Kenny. He continued running after Kenny until he sensed the Buzz outside of a factory. He opened the door and went inside the factory, looking for Kenny.
"I know you're here, Kenny," Duncan called out as he walked further in the factory, "Come out. We can talk about this."
No answer. Duncan moved forward cautiously, "Why Anne? She was no danger to you."
"She was in my way!" Kenny called out from his hiding place, "I hate it when people get in my way!"
"Like Frank Brody?" Duncan replied, "Brody would've protected you. Ross would've protected you. I would protect you."
"For how long?" Kenny replied, "Such a small boy...such easy prey!"
Duncan continued to look around, but still couldn't see him.
"All of you would have taken my head eventually," Kenny stated, "there's no other way."
Duncan got knocked down by some loose machinery, probably set up by Kenny, who climbed down and stood over him.
"It all comes down to one thing, MacLeod," Kenny declared, "In the end, there can be only one."
He raised his sword, "It might as well be me."
He started to swing his sword down, but Duncan blocked the blow. He pushed Kenny away, rolled the machinery off of his chest, and drawn his katana. Kenny ran as Duncan got back on his feet.
"Kenny!" Duncan called out as he ran out after him.
He exit the factory. He looked around as a school bus drove past him. Duncan noticed that Kenny was inside, staring out the back window. It was a good way for Kenny to blend in. He got away, but Duncan had a feeling this was not the last time he'd see Kenny.
