Defenders Chronicles: Highlander

By AmandaDoE

Chapter One: Culture Clashed

Mandrake and Lothar were at the parking lot.

"Where could they be?" Lothar asked.

"MacLeod and the others should be here any time now," Mandrake answered. They looked to see a T – bird arrive at the area.

"Right on time?" Lothar asked.

"Right on time," Mandrake grinned. They looked to see Duncan stepping out of the car, followed by Richie and Tori, noticing that they are nicely dressed as they were as well.

"Hello, Mandrake, Lothar," Tori greeted the pair, "How have the team been?"

"We've been doing well," Mandrake answered, "Rick, LJ and Jedda have been preparing themselves to graduate high school, Kshin has been doing well, and we've stopped Ming every time he tried to conquer our planet."

"He never stops, does he?" Richie quipped.

"That would be an understatement," Mandrake replied, "How's the Highlander?"

"Doing just fine," Duncan answered, "Whenever an enemy comes by, I take their head."

"As usual," Lothar replied.

"How is the lovely couple?" Mandrake asked.

"Relationship – wise, we are doing fine," Tori answered, "but Richie… We'll tell talk to you about it a bit later."

"Okay. That probably sounds like a good idea to wait," Lothar nodded.

"We should get going," Mandrake suggested.

"Excellent idea," Duncan replied.

"Man. All these people," Richie stated, noticing the crowd, "just to see a statue from India?"

"And to donate money," Mandrake answered, "A good private collection doesn't come cheap."

"Well, something tells me these people can afford it," Richie stated.

"Isn't that a fact?" Tori quipped.

"Indeed it is," Duncan nodded, "Academics, university alumni, one or two foreign ambassadors…..come on, you guys fit right in."

"Oh right," Richie replied, "Yeah, me and professors."

"Especially you, Tori," Lothar stated.

"Duncan," a woman called out as she approached the group, "Mandrake."

"Shandra Devane, it is good to see you, my dear," Mandrake greeted the woman as he kissed her cheek, causing Duncan to roll his eyes.

"It's good to see you as well, Duncan," Shandra told him before she allowed him to kiss her cheek.

"Shandra Devane, you remember Lothar Kewabe, right?" Mandrake asked.

"Of course," Shandra replied before they shook hands, "Good to see you again."

"Likewise," Lothar nodded with a small smile, "it is good to see you again."

"And these are my young friends," Duncan introduced Shandra to Tori and Richie, "Richie Ryan and Tori Gordon."

They gave him a look.

"Oh, I'm sorry," Richie apologized, "I was expecting someone a little, uh, tweedier, you know, maybe smoking a pipe."

"Oh, Richie," Tori chuckled, giving her boyfriend a slight pat on the arm.

"Oh. Well," Shandra replied, "I'll have to work on that."

She took Duncan's arm and then Mandrake's, "Come on. Let's have a look at her."

The group walked over to the Kali display, "The Bengal Kali. Isn't she beautiful?"

"Remarkable," Mandrake answered.

"Not exactly my type," Richie stated, "I thought this was supposed to be a mother goddess."

"I think it's Hindu mythology," Tori glanced at the statue, "but I don't study Hindu since being in the IUA."

"Kali takes on many forms in Hindu mythology," Shandra explained, "She is the mother, but she is also the destroyer, the end of time itself."

She then eyed Duncan, "And she's ours, thanks to you."

"All I gave you was a few contacts," Duncan replied.

"Who finally came through?" Mandrake asked.

"A dark horse," Shandra answered, "One of your contacts actually turned me on to him. Martin Millay."

"Millay?" Mandrake looked down confused, not knowing who she was talking about.

"Shandra, the guy's one cut above a grave robber," Duncan stated.

"I wasn't exactly crazy about him either," Shandra replied, "but he swears it was legal."

"Oh yeah," Duncan chimed in, "and I'm sure "technically" was used a lot too."

"The point is she's here," Shandra stated, "and she's worth it."

Duncan glanced around and saw an Indian man, who bowed to him.

"Do you know this guy?" Mandrake asked.

"Yes," Duncan nodded, "His name is Kamir. I met him in 1764, India."

"He's immortal, like you are?" Lothar asked.

"Exactly," Duncan nodded. He reflected on meeting Kamir in 1764, India.

"Interesting how many people you have history with," Lothar stated.

"Well, well, well," Duncan spoke up, "You throw a party and look who shows up."

"MacLeod," Kamir asked, "Hobnobbing with the upper crust again, or could it be that you just can't get India out of your system?"

"Maybe it's a little bit of both," Duncan answered, "I want to introduce you to somebody. Kamir, this is Richie Ryan, Tori Gordon and Shandra Devane."

"I am Mandrake the Magician," Mandrake introduced himself as well, "and this is my best friend Lothar Kewabe."

"Shandra's responsible for bringing the Kali here," Duncan informed Kamir.

"With a little luck and a lot of help," Shandra replied happily.

"Kamir doesn't believe in luck," Duncan informed the group.

"Karma, luck, destiny….in the end, I suppose they're all the same," Kamir said, "Kali calls us to her in different ways."

"Excuse me, are you saying that a statue brought you here?" Richie asked.

"Actually, it was a swift, smooth, seven four seven," Kamir answered.

"That's nifty," Tori quipped.

"Anyway, the important thing is," Kamir declared, "the Kali statue has been found, and can now take its rightful place."

"She already has," Shandra replied, "Right here, being seen, and studied."

"Really? How do you study a god?" Kamir asked in disbelief, "Look at her eyes. See how they look through you, right inside your soul. Her maker was truly inspired."

"I'll bet," Tori nodded.

Richie was staring at the statue, and gave his head a little shake, "He's right. Very weird. Listen, by the way…."

Kamir had vanished from sight.

"What happened?" Tori asked, "He's gone."

"Interesting friend you have," Shandra stated.

"He always was," Duncan replied.

"Want to talk about it?" Mandrake asked as he was seated in the apartment with Lothar, Richie and Tori.

"What's there to talk about?" Richie interjected.

"Tori told me you've been dealing with the aftermath of what happened recently," Lothar spoke up.

Richie looked around, "You mean not being able to testify against that guy who killed the store owner's wife?"

"No, no," Mandrake shook his head, "the moment before that."

"Sierra Shivers," Tori elaborated on what the men were implying, "when she made Seacouver into Nightmare City."

"What happened there?" Lothar asked.

"Anne was dealing with a masked killer chasing her," Tori answered, "Duncan faced his evil self, Amanda was in 1180s England attire and she was executed at the stake with no sanctuary, Joe was in a depressed, homeless state upon his nightmare of no immortals, my nightmare made me a cold assassin with a trashy hooker attire."

"Oh dear," Mandrake's eyes widened in surprise.

"What about Richie?" Lothar asked.

"I – I was obese," Richie answered, "about 40 pounds bigger. It was awful. I couldn't see my feet over having a big belly, my entire body…..I looked like that heavyset actor if you will. The ordeal was embarrassing."

"It must have been embarrassing," Mandrake replied.

"That was your worst nightmare?" Lothar asked.

"You don't know the half of it!" Richie exclaimed, reliving the trauma of his ordeal, "It was hard for me to breathe, hard for me to run, I could barely get into Mac's car and I worried that it would break down over my weight. I got stuck when I tried to get out of the damn car, and I nearly squished Tori to death when she and Mac tried to get me out!"

He broke down, burying his head with his hands, "I could have killed her with my weight."

"You do realize that immortals don't stay dead from being squished to death, right?" Mandrake asked.

Richie sniffed, "Yeah, but it would have ate away at me if that had happened."

"Richie, it's okay," Tori comforted him, "I do have muscles and I was strong enough to help you get off me."

"Anything else that happened?" Mandrake asked.

"I ripped my pants when I was helping Anne against the masked killer," Richie stated, "which was embarrassing, and people were staring, laughing, making comments that Mac and the others didn't hear, and of course, there was the crowd, in which one of them shoved me to the ground."

"Before the nightmares began," Tori spoke up, "he mentioned he dreamt of people laughing at him after he was fat and ripped his pants, speaking about a relapse."

"Relapse?" Mandrake asked.

"In course of a nightmare," Richie elaborated further, "I hadn't had a nightmare like that since I was kidnapped by Michael Christian."

"Oh dear," Mandrake stated, "It seems you've had a bad week."

"We've agreed that I will talk to my therapist to overcome this," Richie declared.

"That's right," Tori added, "He was apprehensive over bending over to pick up a stuffed bunny for a little girl, which I ended up doing. He told me he was worried about his pants ripping again, but I assured him it wouldn't happen."

"I know your therapist will help you through this," Mandrake assured him.

"Thanks," Richie smiled.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Richie paced across the dojo floor, twirling the wooden staff. He continued twirling the staff, hit the floor with with the tip, then he moved in front of the mirror to watch his form as he practiced, ended up with the tip of the staff against the floor again, briefly noticing Tori watching him proudly.

They both sensed the Buzz. Kamir had entered the dojo from behind.

"You show great diligence with that," Kamir told Richie, "but there are other ways of using it."

Richie held out the staff to him, "Care to show me?"

Kamir took the staff, and performed a short kata. Richie and Tori watched.

"Looks like a, uh, cross between tai – chi and kendo," Richie noted.

"I noted that as well," Tori nodded in agreement.

"And perhaps it is older than both of them," Kamir stated.

"You don't know?" Richie asked.

"My friend, modern India began over three thousand years ago," Kamir explained, "We were invaded by the Persians, the French, the British. Empire after empire tried to destroy us, but we are still there, and so are our gods."

"Must be an amazing place," Richie replied.

"It is," Kamir affirmed, "but to really know India, you have to live there. See it, taste it, breathe it. There is no place in the world like India."

"We'll make note of that," Tori replied.

"Maybe someday we'll have time to go," Richie added.

"India has nothing but time," Kamir stated with a smile, "When you are ready, she will be waiting for you."

Richie appeared to be drawn to him, while Tori appeared to be conflicted by Kamir. She wanted to support her boyfriend but she knew something wasn't right about what Kamir was teaching them.

The three sensed the Buzz, and Duncan entered the dojo.

"Mac, you should see this guy with a quarter staff," Richie told his teacher.

"I'm sure he's very good," Duncan replied.

"Good? This man is incredible," Richie insisted, "His moves have moves."

"Please, such excessive praise," Kamir replied, "I'm hardly worthy of that."

"I like the humility, Kamir," Duncan stated. Kamir tossed the staff to him, "Nah, I don't think so."

He tossed the staff back to Kamir.

"Oh, come on, Mac," Richie insisted, "it's all fun."

"You should try it," Tori quipped.

Richie fetched another staff for Duncan.

"Come on, MacLeod," Kamir insisted this time, "As Richie says, it's all fun, and as Tori says, you should try it."

"Okay," Duncan relented. He and Kamir began to spar. Duncan jabbed Kamir in the sides. They circled each other, reading their stances, twirling their staffs, then they continued sparring. They exchanged blows, Duncan ducked a kick from Kamir, then Kamir knocked Duncan off of his feet.

Kamir gave his opponent a hand up, "Only luck has brought me this victory."

"Really?" Duncan replied, "In Japan, the move is called diashi harai."

"Is it really?" Kamir asked.

"Really," Duncan replied before telling the young couple, "Tori, Rich, see you guys later."

"See you guys later," Richie replied.

"Bye," Tori waved them off. They left the dojo.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"Are you sure about this?" Tori asked.

"I'm sure," Richie answered, "Kamir sounds quite interesting, as is India."

"I'll bet it is," Tori nodded, "the culture sounds quite interesting too."

"I am wanting to take you there one day," Richie hugged his girlfriend, "I imagine you as my queen, my goddess."

He kissed her, "Whatever they call them in India. I wonder the cultures, and stuff, even you are extraordinary with your family. I don't get that."

"Stop it," Tori stated, "You are extraordinary. You just don't know it yet."

They shared another kiss.

"I love you, my King Richard Ryan," Tori smiled.

"I love you too, my Queen Victoria Gordon," Richie replied.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Tori looked on as Richie was practicing with Kamir. She knew the culture Kamir was a part of died down, but she wanted to support her boyfriend as he was clearly interested in this culture.

"Shabash," Kamir stated, "Well done, as they say in India."

"It must have been quite a world," Richie replied.

"India has many worlds, Richie," Kamir stated, "From the borders of Sri Lanka up to the Himalayas. Anything you could imagine, India had it. India was it, and as the great wheel turns, will be again."

Richie continued the kata while Tori watched.

"Good," Kamir continued, "Men like us preserve where we come from because that is what make us sane. That is what make us holy."

Richie stopped kata, "Sure, if you come from somewhere…..or someone."

"You only say this because you don't know who your parents are," Kamir stated, "No Immortal does. We are children and heirs of the time and place that bore us."

Excuse me? Tori thought, annoyed with that statement, Some immortals happen to know who there parents are. You have the audacity to exploit Richie's vulnerability like that.

"So, Mac's got the Highlands, You've got India," Richie stated, "Even Tori, my girlfriend, she's got her prestigious family, coming from the famous Flash Gordon….I've got bowling alleys and fast food joints."

"You have much more than that, Richie," Kamir affirmed, "and you will know it when it starts to die before you, and you will fight for it, even if you are, as I am, the last of your kind. Come on, let's go."

Kamir attacked with his staff. Richie blocked with his staff, "Well done. Shabash."

The two men and Tori sensed the Buzz.

Duncan entered the dojo, "Give us a moment, would you?"

"Sure," Richie replied as he moved next to Tori, and they left the dojo afterwards.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"He's trying to exploit your vulnerability!" Tori exclaimed as she was pacing the apartment, "I also think this way Kamir is thinking is not how we should be thinking."

"He's saying things to me that's making sense," Richie replied, "I don't know how you are seeing things, it feels….right."

"That's what he wants you to feel," Tori replied, "but I'm not sure what his main goal is, but I think this might be a cult."

She paced the room for a little bit before she faced her boyfriend, "Look, I don't necessarily believe his ways, but no matter what you decide, I'll support you."

Richie eyed her before replying, "Thanks, Tor. That's all I'm asking."

They shared a kiss.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"I don't get it, Mac," Richie stated, "The guy seemed so enlightened about life. I mean, when I talk to him, I feel like I'm talking to some sort of priest."

"You were," Duncan replied, "He's just not the type that takes confessions."

"Didn't think that," Tori retorted.

"But now you're trying to tell us he's a murderer," Richie inquired.

"That's right," Duncan replied.

"Wasn't Millay a dirtbag?" Tori asked.

"Yeah," Richie chided, "you said so yourself."

"The Kali was already gone," Duncan insisted, "There was no reason to kill him."

"Kamir thought there was," Richie replied.

"Yeah, but Kamir thinks he lives under a different set of rules than everybody else," Duncan stated, "rules that give him the right to kill."

"Maybe they do," Richie replied.

"Richie!" Tori exclaimed.

"Richie, it doesn't work like that," Duncan stressed, "They thought that in the twelfth century when they cut off somebody's hand for stealing a loaf of bread."

"I knew there was something off about this guy," Tori muttered.

"Yes, but Mac, according to them," Richie interjected, "according to what they believed in, they were right."

"We all have the judgment of what is right and what is wrong," Duncan replied.

"So Kamir made a different call than you did," Tori stated.

"Does that make him evil?" Richie asked.

"No, it doesn't," Duncan answered.

"That's what I'm saying, Mac," Richie stressed, "He is just trying to save his culture. To us, the Kali is just a piece of bronze, but to him, it's India. It's everything he loves."

"I know," Duncan replied.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Tori hurried over to the university going after Kamir, who was after Shandra. He looked up when they were sensing each other's buzz.

"So, you're not that supportive to your boyfriend?" Kamir inquired.

"Not if you are being a killer," Tori stated, "I won't let Richie stay influenced by your sick teachings."

"So be it, girl," Kamir replied before they started to duel. He ended up having Tori at his mercy, "I'm going to enjoy this."

Kamir then prepared to use his sword to behead Tori, "And don't worry, I will give Richie your regards, and my sincere condolences."

"Not yet."

He and Tori glanced to see Duncan arriving at the area.

"Why couldn't you take the Kali and leave in peace?" Duncan asked.

"Because Shandra Devane is the worst kind of traitor," Kamir answered, "To Millay, that statue was just a trade. To her, it should have been a god. Kali has judged her, and her punishment is death. As well as hers…."

"Leave Tori to me," Duncan insisted. He walked over to her before asking, "Why did you come here?"

"I wanted to take him down, Mac," Tori answered.

"Leave Kamir to me," Duncan replied, "and head back to Richie. Go!"

Tori nodded before leaving the area.

"Now it's just you and me," Duncan declared before he said, "Shandra's not part of your world. She's part of mine. Whatever Kali's laws are, she's not subjected to them."

"I am her law, I am her priest," Kamir declared, "It is why Vashti gave her life. She knew that."

"Don't you cheapen her death," Duncan replied, "She died for her beliefs, not you."

"She believed in me, MacLeod," Kamir insisted, "Just as Richie believes in me. I would have made him underetand after I had taken his girlfriend's head."

"Is that how you feel," Duncan asked, "to make Richie a part of your world?"

"Exactly," Kamir declared, "I am India. I am Kali."

"You are not a god," Duncan retorted, "You never were."

"Who are you to tell me who I am?" Kamir asked.

"I'm an immortal, like you," Duncan answered, "Now take the Kali and leave."

"Not while the traitor lives," Kamir replied.

"Then there's one rule we both live by," Duncan took out his katana and removed his jacket, "There can be only one."

"Very well. Let our blades decide who is right," Kamir stated before he took off his jacket after he got out his sword, "Kali is watching."

They bowed to each other, and then their fight began.

The fight took the two immortals to the planetarium, and the central console was on, displaying a spectacular light show onto the domed ceiling. Kamir wrapped his silk scarf around the handle of Duncan's katana, trying to disarm him, but Duncan used it to pull Kamir to him for a fatal slash to the torso, then Duncan took Kamir's head, and then his Quickening.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Duncan was at the loft at the dojo with Richie, Tori, Mandrake and Lothar.

"What you did there was really reckless, Tori," Mandrake stated as the group was filled in on the events of the night before, "You could have lost your head."

"I thought you were going to support me, Tori," Richie declared.

"I do," Tori held his hands, "but I can't support that creep. Him killing people, thinking people were a part of his world. What do you think?"

"You're acting a bit like Flash would," Lothar couldn't help but to blurt out.

"Isn't that a fact?" Mandrake chimed in.

"Never pull a stunt like that again. You might not be so lucky next time," Duncan told Tori, "Do you understand?"

"Yes," Tori nodded.

"Good."

Richie looked at the Kali statue, "All the people that were killed for this thing."

He turned towards Duncan, "I still don't feel good about him dying."

"You're not supposed to," Duncan replied.

"There was a greatness about him, Mac," Richie affirmed, "What he said, what he stood for, what he wanted for his people."

"There is a time and place for everything," Mandrake replied, "and Kamir lived many years past his time."

"Outdated, if you will," Lothar added.

"Kamir didn't speak for India," Duncan insisted, "He spoke for himself and a cult that died out over a hundred years ago."

"I know," Richie sighed, "but some of it still felt like the truth."

"Some of it was," Duncan replied, "When you're immortal, you see kings and dynasties come and go. Sometimes, it's hard to remember that you're not a god."

"Kamir thought he was," Tori stated.

"Exactly!" Duncan exclaimed.

"So what are you going to do with the Kali now?" Richie asked.

"Well, he came to take her home," Duncan answered, "That's where she's going."

He covered the statue with a cloth and closed the crate.

"Richie?" Tori called to his boyfriend.

"Yeah?" Richie glanced at her.

"You're extraordinary to somebody," Tori told him, "You're extraordinary to me."

She held him in a loving embrace, "Rich, I might come from a well known family, Mandrake and Lothar might be famous, and Mac might have the Scotlands, but you're special in your own right, you just don't know it yet. I believe in you."

She then kissed him.

"Thanks, Tori," Richie smiled.

Author's Note:

Talk about rolling with the punches. This was not one of my favorite Highlander episodes. I've seen better. Glad I got this out of the way, and made due with what I got and now I am going to start on an interesting take on the episode "Chivalry" in which Gilles is a witch, and things are different when it comes to well, Richie, to be exact. You'll find out what I'm talking about when the chapter is posted. See you then!
