Chapter Fifty-Four: Rescue Mission
Anne made her way to the subway area where the explosion took place. She was a doctor, and despite being pregnant, she was willing to do what it took to help those in needs.
"Where do you think you're going, Anne?" Mike asked, stopping her in her tracks.
"I'm the doctor," Anne answered, "Remember?"
"Ha," Mike retorted, "A pregnant one."
"Look, I work in the ER," Anne replied, "She's going to have to get used to it someday. Let's go."
She noticed people talking in the midst of all the chaos and injured survivors were being attended to, as Anne went further to the scene to get potential survivors the help they needed as she approached Officer Hardy, "Excuse me, sir?"
"You can't go down there, understand?" Officer Hardy replied, "you understand?"
"I'm Dr. Anne Lindsey," Anne introduced herself.
"Who let you through?" Hardy replied before he called out, "Bill! Bill, I thought I told you to keep these people out of here!"
"They said you needed, uh, extra," Anne insisted, "extra help around here. Listen, uh, we need to get down there."
"Yeah, well, you don't," Hardy replied, "Not for now. You go get yourself a cup of coffee or a glass of milk or something."
"Coffee?" Anne stated in disbelief, "What are you talking about?"
"This could take awhile."
"The first hour's very critical," Anne stressed.
"Yeah, I know, Doctor," Hardy replied, "I can't let you through till I've got it secure. The whole place could come down around your ears yet."
"Oh, I hate this!" Anne exclaimed as she looked around.
"I'm not going to wait," Mike said impatiently.
"You know, just calm down," Anne replied, "You know what he said. We don't want any heroes around here."
"That's what they pay me the big bucks for," Mike replied before he headed towards the subway entrance. Anne followed him.
"We need more stretchers at the front entrance."
Anne and Mike snuck past rescue workers loading a victim on a gurney into the back of an ambulance.
Anne then snuck behind the subway map, and she entered the building where two firefighters were waiting nearby as they entered the wrecked subway station.
"Whoa!" Mike exclaimed as some electricity sparked.
Anne knelt besides a man laying on some stairs, and shined a flashlight on his face. She knew he was dead, "Too late."
She closed the man eyes, "Let's go."
Anne led Mike down the stairs, deeper into the building.
"Help!" a woman cried out, "Please, help!"
"Hey. Over there," Mike called out, "Let's clear the way."
They made their way carefully over to an injured woman.
"Thank God," the woman cried out.
"Okay, come on down, Anne," Mike replied before telling the woman, "Hi, we're here. We're here to help you."
Anne reached them.
"I'm going to check the other side," Mike told her.
Anne then traded places with him and was besides the injured woman, "All right. All right. I'm a doctor. You're going to get you out of here. Now try not to move, okay? It's okay. It's all right."
The woman was crying in pain, and Anne asked her, "Where does it hurt? I don't want you to move. Just tell me."
A distant explosion caused the ceiling to collapse near them.
"Look out, Anne!" Mike shouted.

Tori looked on at the radio as she heard the radio while Duncan and Richie were making some touches on the Victorian.
"At this stage it's not known if the explosion is caused by gas, chemicals or a terrorist bomb," the voice of Randi MacFarland announced on the radio, "but it's clear that the mid city subway complex has been torn by a huge blast. Firefighters and rescue teams across the city are scrambling to reach the disaster site, hoping to contain the damage and reach victims. Other than two pedestrians, no casualty figures have been released, but as the smoke billows up, one thing is certain: the death toll will continue to rise."
"I wonder if Jack was on to something regarding this explosion," Tori stated quietly, "or maybe he's blowing smoke. Freak accidents happen."
"A relatively few victims are thought to have been inside the structure," Randi continued, "We will continue to bring you late breaking developments from the scene."
Tori looked on as Richie was helping Duncan move the wicker furniture onto the porch as he said, "Mac, I've been thinking."
"What, again?" Duncan asked.
"No, I'm serious," Richie insisted.
"No, Richie," Duncan replied, "I like the colors."
"No, it's not about the colors," Richie told him. "I like those."
"Me too." Tori said.
"I've been thinking that – what with this place being finished and all – maybe you want to give the loft to me and Tori," Richie suggested.
"Really?" Tori quipped.
"I'm not moving," Duncan replied.
"Reporting live once again from the disaster site," Randi's voice announced on the radio once again, "Here is an update. Rescue workers are having a difficult time."
"What, you're going to sell this thing?" Richie asked, "I mean, this is all a business venture?"
"Nope, it's not," Duncan answered.
"Well, if you're not going to sell it, and you're not going to live here," Richie asked, "can you hand the house so that Tori and I can live in it, something like a home for us both?"
Duncan laughed, "It seems you're wanting to settle down."
"Not really," Richie chided, "Not yet."
"We interrupt our program with an update on the mid city subway explosion," Randi's voice chimed on the radio, "A second major blast has rocked the station, making access to lower levels almost impossible. Unconfirmed reports say a medical team from County General Hospital, led by Dr. Anne Lindsey, has been trapped inside."
"Oh no, Anne," Tori muttered as she glanced at Richie and Duncan.
"Anne," Duncan chimed in before he, Tori and Richie hurried away from the house.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan looked on as he, Tori and Richie pulled up to where they could park. They got out of the car, and walked through the police barricade.
"What a circus," Richie stated as they walked towards the area, "Who do you think's in charge here, Mac?" Richie asked.
"Your guess is as good as mine," Duncan answered.
"Only one way to find out," Tori declared.
"No, I want everybody out of there," the head officer ordered another personnel member, "You understand? Everybody. Your guys, my guys – everybody. Water and power's discovered another leak. It could blow at any time."
"This must be him," Tori pointed at the commanding officer. She, Duncan and Richie approached the officer.
Duncan jumped in, once the officer finished, "Her name's Anne Lindsey. She's with…."
"Just a minute. Just a minute," the officer replied, "Here. Gimme this, Max."
He took a roll of police line tape from a city worker and started to unspool it, "Let me show you."
He then turned to Duncan, "What? Anne who?"
"The doctor. Lindsey," Duncan elaborated.
"Oh, yes. The pregnant one," the head officer replied, "I remember her."
"That's her, yeah," Duncan affirmed.
"She went in there without my permission. She never came out."
"Went in where?"
"Never mind where. The last thing I need's another damn hero."
Duncan, Tori and Richie each exchanged a look to one another.
"Come on. Come on," the officer waved the trio outside the police line.
"We're not giving up, are we?" Tori asked.
"We're not," Duncan answered.
"Just cause he says we can't go down, doesn't mean we're not going down," Richie added.
"That's right," Duncan stated.
"Well, then, um, where are we going to go?" Richie asked.
"Where else, Hot Shot?" Tori interjected as she grabbed his arm and Duncan led them into the wrecked station.
Duncan climbed the access ladder, and turned on the flashlight. Richie and Tori joined them in the debris strewn stairwell.
"Man, this is unbelievable," Richie absorbed the area, "It looks like someone dropped a bomb in here."
"That's exactly what it looks like," Duncan said as he made his way carefully around some fallen beams and chunks of concrete, "but this was gas."
"It's not often that things like this happen," Tori added, "but not all unusual things are caused by immortals or intergalactic beings."
"You're absolutely right," Duncan declared.
"I hope Jack isn't trying to track down a random immortal to blame for this," Tori stated.
"I don't think he will," Richie shook his head, "and what's the difference?"
"There is a difference," Duncan told the pair, "Believe me. I've been there."
"Uh, yeah?" Richie replied, "Where was that?"
The group heard a muffled yell in response.
"Did you hear that?" Richie asked.
"I did," Tori quickly answered.
Duncan continued moving forward, "England, World War II. They called it The Blitz."
Duncan reflected in 1940 London where he had a girlfriend Diane Terrin and they ended up being trapped in the underground during the Blitz and gas was leaking in, and Diane died before they could be rescued.
"Anne?" Duncan called out, "Anne!"
The three walked along a debris strewn hallway.
"Over there," Richie called out.
Duncan moved some debris out of the way, revealing a young boy lying unconscious by the wall. He gently pulled the boy out, "Easy with him. Easy, come on. Got you. Come on. I've got you."
He picked the boy up, "There. There you go."
Duncan looked the boy over, "He's in shock. He's going to need a doctor."
Richie took off his jacket, and Duncan approved, "Yeah."
He stood up with the boy in his arms, "Yeah, put that around him."
The Highlander then transferred the boy to Richie's arms, "That's it. There you got him?"
"Yeah, I got him," Richie held the boy in his arms, "Tori and I will take care of things. You go find Anne."
"Okay," Duncan replied, "Wish me luck."
"Good luck," Tori replied before she led Richie and the boy out of the area.
Duncan continued making his way to the wreckage, looking for Anne while reflecting on falling underground with Diane.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Anne tried her best to comfort Mike, who was trapped under a beam that crushed him while the woman looked on, "Here you go. It's okay."
"Anne?" Mike called out, "Anne, where are you?"
"I'm right here. I'm right here," Anne answered before she unscrewed the lid from a bottle, "Drink some of this, okay? Just drink some of this."
She lifted Mike's head, and held the bottle to his lips, "All right?"
"Anne. Anne," Mike said, "I can't see you."
Anne climbed around the end of the beam pinning Mike, then she got hit by another contraction.
"Doctor?" the woman called out. Mike cried out and then the woman called out again, "Doctor. Doctor!"
Anne managed to recover from the contraction, "Oh my God! Damn it! Mike!"
She went to check his pulse, "Oh, God, no! Mike, don't do this."
"Do something," the woman cried out, "He's going to die."
Anne started digging in the medical bag, "He's not going to die!"
Karen started to cry.
"Come on, Mike," Anne called out, "Stay with us."
Mike gasped for breath.
"Keep him still," Anne told the woman, "Keep him still!"
Anne drawn up a dose from a vial into a syringe, "Come on. Come on. Come on. We need you down here, Mike. Stay with us. Come on."
"Come on, Mike," the woman cried out, trying to help, "Hold on. Hold on."
Anne injected the syringe into Mike's chest.
"Come on," the woman cried out.
"Don't go!" Anne cried out, "Stay with us! Mike! Please!"
"Come on. Stay with us," the woman cried out as Mike was dying, "Oh God, he's dead. He's dead. We're all going to die! Oh, God in Heaven, help us!"
Anne found herself having another contraction. This was serious this time, but it was too early for her daughter to come, and it couldn't have come at a worst time.
"Now?" The woman asked.
"Yeah," Anne answered as she sank down to sit against a wall, "Oh, sweetheart, don't do this. Oh, sweetheart, don't do this now."
"You'll be – you'll be okay," The lady assured her.
"That's my line," Anne replied.
The woman laughed before she asked, "How – how early are you?"
"Eight weeks," Anne answered, "This can't be happening."
"Oh, trust me hon," the woman replied, "I've had four of my own, and you don't always get to count on the time and the place."
"What's your name?" Anne asked.
"Karen," the woman answered.
"Karen?"
Karen nodded.
"How do you feel about natural childbirth, Karen?" Anne asked.
"Well, I think the more important question is how does she feel about it," Karen interjected. Anne tried to hold back tears while laughing.
"This isn't how I pictured it," Anne stated.
"Yeah. She'll be okay," Karen assured her.
Anne had another contraction, "Oh God!"
"Oh. Oh, okay," Karen knew she needed to do something and she started giving Anne instructions, "Okay. Okay, they're starting to come closer, so you, uh – You lie back."
She put her sweater behind Anne's head, "Lie back. Lie back. Yeah."
Another explosion was heard in the distance.
"No! No!" Anne exclaimed in a panic.
"No, no," Karen comforted Anne, "Anne, Anne."
"I'm not having the baby here!" Anne exclaimed in denial.
"No. No. You're not going anywhere, okay?" Karen told her, "Because the baby's coming. The baby's coming and you're going to stay here. We're going to start your breathing."
"Okay," Anne relented.
"Okay, start your breathing," Karen instructed.
They started rhythmically breathing together.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"Excuse me," Richie called out as he carried the boy in his arm, arriving with Tori, "Excuse me. Can I get a hand with him?"
The chief officer they saw earlier approached them, "What is this? I thought I told you you couldn't go down there."
"We just saved that boy's life," Tori told him. They started to walk away.
"Where are you two going?" the officer demanded.
"We're going back down," Tori answered.
The officer grabbed them in response, "Like Hell."
"Back off, Officer Hardy!"
Richie and Tori turned to see Jack arriving at the scene with five other agents in tow.
"And who are you supposed to be?" Hardy demanded.
"My name is Agent Jack Banks," Jack introduced himself, "and my fellow military agents are responsible for helping in the rescue mission, with rescuing survivors of this gas explosion. Either you let them go, and do it, or I will force you to."
"As you were," Hardy relented, releasing Richie and Tori from his grasp.
"As you were," Jack retorted before he and the couple joined the other agents as well as rescue personnel in finding their friends and other survivors.
"You do know this is just a gas explosion, right?" Tori asked Jack.
"Of course," Jack answered, "Leader, your mother, asked us to come here to help rescue survivors of this gas explosion."
"Why's that?" Richie asked, "Usually we are on mission if it's an intergalactic reason or another immortal."
"She knew it'd be a situation Duncan MacLeod would be involved in," Jack answered, "Hence, that's why we're here."
He handed Richie a fireman uniform, "Put this on."
Jack helped Richie into the coat, "And you're going to need this too."
He handed him a helmet.
"Let's get to it, Fireman Richie," Tori quipped, giving him an encouraging smile.
"Yes, Fireman Richie," Jack added, "You're leading this mission. Leader insisted on it."
Richie gave a smile before telling the agents, "Team Alpha, let's make our move!"
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan made his way through the wreckage, looking for Anne. He knew she was nearby. She had to be.
"Anne?" Duncan called out. He heard a pair of distant voices, but he wasn't sure whom they belonged to.
"Anne!" Duncan called out loudly, seeming to be closer to where she might be.
"Oh, did you hear that?" Anne cried out, "Is it real?"
Duncan remembered trying to escaped through the wreckage of 1940 England with Diane.
Duncan then made his way through the wreckage, "Anne! Come on, answer me. Anne?"
"Duncan!" he heard Anne's voice.
Duncan knocked against some debris, "You in there?"
"Duncan," Anne called out, "We're over here!"
"Hold on, I'm coming!" Duncan called out as he kept pushing against debris blocking his way, "Hold on! Hang on!"
"Hurry, Duncan!" Anne called out, "Hurry!"
"Hang on!" Duncan replied as he almost reached her. He knocked more debris away.
"Duncan!" Anne exclaimed.
"We're here!" another woman added.
Duncan rushed to the women, "Are you all right?"
"She's fine," the red haired woman answered, "She's fine."
"Duncan, the baby," Anne cried out, holding his arms tightly, "Duncan, the baby – the baby's coming."
"You sure?" Duncan asked, surprised about the revelation.
"Yes," Anne answered before having another contraction.
"Keep breathing," the woman instructed Anne, "Keep breathing. Keep breathing."
Anne and the woman were breathing together.
"Ah!" Anne exclaimed in pain, "Oh, Duncan!"
Duncan reflected on being in the underground, the damaged stairwell with Diane and holding her, comforting her to their dying breaths, but of course, Duncan revived the next morning, while Diane did not.
"How am I doing?" Anne asked, leaning back against Duncan, with an emergency blanket around her.
Karen, the woman who was with Anne this whole time, answered, while kneeling between Anne's legs, helping delivering the baby, "Good. You're doing very good. It won't be long."
"You're doing great," Duncan added.
"Are you always this cheerful?" Anne asked Karen.
"Sure, when someone else is having the baby," Karen answered before she laughed.
"Let's breathe," Duncan told the women.
The group started breathing rhythmically.
"Yes," Karen said, "Yes."
"It's okay. Come on," Duncan assured Anne before asking Karen, "You said you've done this before?"
"Well, I've had them," Karen answered, "I've never caught one."
"Oh, great," Anne replied.
"I'll do it," Duncan told the women.
"No! Don't, please," Anne pleaded, "Please stay here. Hold me. Hold me."
"Come on," Duncan comforted Anne, "Come on."
"Okay," Anne replied, accepting comfort.
"Push, please."
"No," Anne replied, exhausted.
"Push. Now," Karen instructed, "Push."
Anne tried to push, "No, I can't anymore."
"You can do it," Duncan assured her, "You can."
"Duncan, I can't do it," Anne cried out.
"Push. Push," Karen coaxed the doctor.
"Please," Duncan added.
"She's coming," Karen declared.
The three jumped upon noticing a shower of sparks erupting nearby.
"Okay," Anne relented.
"Come on," Karen exclaimed, "Come on. She's coming! The baby's coming!"
"Breathe," Duncan added.
"Push! Push!" Karen exclaimed, helping Anne, "She's coming. The baby's coming. Push."
"Come on," Duncan added.
"Push. Push. Push," Karen told Anne. She laughed as Anne screamed, pushing the baby out, "Yes! Yes! Oh, yes!"
"Come on, Anne," Duncan instructed, "You can do it. Come on. Come on. Come on, Anne. You can do it."
"Oh, yes!" Karen exclaimed, "Oh, oh, she's beautiful!"
She lifted the baby up and the baby was crying, "She's beautiful."
"Let me see," Anne replied, "Let me see."
Karen handed the baby to her, wrapped in an emergency blanket. Duncan hastily peeled off his shirt to wrap around the wet baby.
Anne, in joyous tears, cradled her healthy, squalling daughter. Overwhelmed, Duncan cradled them both.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"Mac?" Richie's voice called out from a distance.
"Richie?" Duncan called out as he heard the voice as he was holding Anne and her baby.
"Mac, is that you?" Richie called out.
"Can you hear us?" Tori called out.
Richie appeared with Tori, Jack and the rest of the rescue team.
"Hey, Mac, you okay?" Richie asked, "You guys all right?"
"Yeah, we're fine," Duncan answered.
"That's good," Tori replied.
"Three of you down there?" Jack asked.
"Yeah, three," Duncan answered.
Anne held her baby wrapped in the emergency blanket, "Four."
"Four!" Duncan corrected himself.
"We'll get you guys out of there in a second," Richie told the group.
"We need a stretcher down here, now," a second agent spoke into the radio.
"Roger, stand by."
Richie approached Karen, "You okay?"
"Yeah," Karen answered.
Richie told the rescue team, "Team Alpha, can we get a hand with this woman, please?"
He handed Karen towards Jack, who then handed her to the medical personnel, "Thanks."
Richie and Tori hurried towards Duncan and Anne.
"You guys all right?" Tori asked.
"Richie, Tori, we need a blanket – fast," Duncan told them, before he pulled down the edge of the emergency blanket, revealing the baby.
"She needs help," Anne added.
"Oh, man!" Richie exclaimed.
"We'll get to it," Tori replied.
"Yeah," Duncan stated, "Quick."
"We'll get some blankets," Tori told the pair.
"We'll be right back," Richie added before he and Tori left the area.
"Hurry?" Anne called out, "Please, hurry."
"Okay," Duncan stated.
"I've, uh," Anne told Duncan, "I've already picked a name for her."
"Well, I hope it's a simple one," Duncan replied, "Kids like a simple name."
"Yeah. Mary," Anne informed him, "I'm going to call her Mary."
"Really?" Duncan asked.
"You don't like it?"
"No, I do," Duncan answered, "Uh…..it was my mother's name."
"Yeah, I know," Anne replied, "I asked Joe."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan, Anne, Richie and Tori all stood in the front yard of the Victorian House.
"Guess what, Anne," Richie informed her, "Mac picked all the colors himself."
Anne was holding Mary. "Oh. Well, I think you did a terrific job. I really do."
"You do?" Duncan asked before giving out a triumphant laugh.
"I do too," Richie chimed in, "that's why I was saying about the colors."
"We'll see you guys in a second," Richie stated before eyeing his girlfriend, "Come on, Tor."
"I'm with you, Hot Shot," Tori replied before giving him a kiss on the cheek, "They need some privacy."
They walked towards the house, leaving Anne and Duncan by themselves.
"It's beautiful," Anne stated, eyeing the house.
"I thought it was a great place to raise a family," Duncan replied. "It's yours."
"Mine?" Anne looked at him with surprise, "Oh! Oh, Duncan, that's an incredible gesture….."
"Anne, it's okay," Duncan assured her, "I'll put it in Mary's name."
"But even so….." Anne started to say.
"Anne," Duncan insisted, "I want to do this for you and Mary. It's just my way of telling you if you need anything, ever….."
She smiled, knowing him well enough to know what that meant, "Thank you."
Duncan handed Anne the keys to the house before they headed towards the house.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"That was a hell of a gesture, Mac," Richie said as he, Tori and Duncan were at a campfire in Duncan's island.
"I'll say," Tori quipped, "Giving her that house was really nice of you."
"I used to think a dozen of roses was a nice gift," Richie chimed in, "Or a sweater, maybe even an ankle bracelet."
"You think she liked it?" Tori asked.
"You tell me," Duncan answered.
"Oh, are you kidding?" Richie replied, "She's going to be pinching herself for three days just to make sure she's not dreaming. I mean, how often does somebody get handed a five bedroom, four thousand square foot, custom designed home?"
"Not very often," Tori shook her head.
"For a minute there," Duncan stated, "I didn't think she was going to take it."
"Not a chance," Richie replied.
"Richie's right," Tori added, "As soon as you lifted the keys, we knew it was gone."
The three shared a laugh.
"I want to ask you something," Richie spoke up.
"You want to know why?" Duncan asked.
"You're thinking of moving in someday," Richie inquired.
"No," Duncan answered, "We were over a long time ago."
He reflected on Anne telling him she was pregnant back in Paris, Anne telling him he had no obligation to her child, the stand off with Daimler and Anne leaving Paris, unable to handle the immortal lifestyle.
Richie and Tori reflected on saying goodbye to Anne back in Paris after the Daimler incident.
"Still, it doesn't make sense," Richie spoke up, "I mean, you worked on that place for months."
"Yeah," Tori added. "You've got to have a personal relationship with every single nail in there."
Richie and Tori shared a chuckle.
"Did you see the look on her face after I gave her the keys?" Duncan asked.
"She was glowing," Richie noted.
"That's the reason," Duncan told them, "For that one moment. Just to see the look on her face."
"Got it," Richie replied with a smile.
"We'll have our own house someday," Tori assured before he gently placed her hand on his shoulder, "In the meantime, we should enjoy our apartment."
"Good idea," Tori declared.
"I think it's time to go home," Duncan told the group.
"One more thing," Richie said. "If you ever feel like playing contractor….I hate the apartment I'm in. The bedroom's tiny, the shower's a joke…"
"Richie," Tori chuckled.
"I'll keep that in mind," Duncan replied with a grin.
Then, the three left the island together.
