Chapter Forty-One: The Exorcism of Richie Ryan
Anne sighed, "It's a terrible story. Such a little boy, killing someone...and – and having it haunt him his whole life, and then seeing him come back to life again. It's terrible."
"You have too vivid of an imagination," Duncan replied before he kissed her cheek.
"Oh," Anne asked, "So what happens now?"
"You stop worrying," Duncan answered, "It's in the past. I'm going to keep it that way."
"Okay," Anne replied.
"Hmmm?" Duncan proceeded to kiss her again.
"Duncan...Mm..."
"What?"
Anne quietly spoke up, "Stop."
She sniffled as she faced him, "I know I haven't, um, been very easy to live with lately."
Duncan scoffed in response, and Anne smiled.
"Let's talk about it," Duncan told her.
"I'm pregnant," Anne announced.
There was a pause of silence as Duncan took a bit to process the announcement.
"Have you told the father?" Duncan asked.
"I'm not with him, I'm with you," Anne answered, "Yes, I have, but um, he..."
She inhaled sharply, "He...he's an old friend, and it just...happened. It was after you were gone, and..."
She sniffled, "Duncan, I was such a wreck. I-I couldn't work, I cou... I couldn't eat. I...I was very lonely, and..."
"Anne, you don't have to explain," Duncan replied, before adding a touch of humor through the strain, "I was dead."
"You're not angry?" Anne asked.
"No," Duncan answered.
"I was so afraid that you'd be angry," Anne replied, "That's why I've been acting so strange."
"So what are we going to do?" Duncan asked.
"Well, I'm going to have the baby," Anne answered, "The question is, what are you going to do?"
"I honestly don't know," Duncan answered that question.
"Okay," Anne replied before she got up from the couch.
"Anne," Duncan told her, "You have a chance at a normal life. A husband, a family—those are things I can't give you."
"I don't love Michael," Anne insisted, "I love you."
"It's not as simple as all that," Duncan replied.
"Isn't it?" Anne asked.
"No," Duncan answered, "Not for me."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"The doctor says you and the baby are going to be fine," Duncan said as he and Anne were walking down the hospital.
"Yes, I know," Anne replied. She reflected a bit on what happened the night before. Daimler attacked her, but was stopped by Duncan, who ended up taking his Quickening after beheading him. She knew what she had to do.
"For a moment there, I thought we were going to lose her," Duncan spoke up, "He did tell you it was a girl?"
"Yes, he did," Anne answered before saying, "Duncan, I want to go home."
"Well, the car's outside," Duncan replied.
Anne suddenly stopped, "No. I want to go home."
"We'll go together," Duncan replied.
"No," Anne stated, "I think I have to go alone, Duncan."
"Alone," Duncan replied, "Whatever you want...I understand."
"Do you?" Anne asked.
"Yeah," Duncan answered, "You almost lost the baby."
"It's more than just that, Duncan."
"Then what? You knew what I was. You knew what my life was," Duncan stated, circling Anne, "What was I supposed to do, let him walk away?"
"No. You had to kill him, Duncan. I understand," Anne replied, facing him again, "I wanted you to kill him. At the time, I would have taken his head myself."
"He kill Bernard," Duncan added, "He would have killed you."
"I understand. I can't live my life like this, Duncan," Anne insisted, "I thought I could, but I can't."
She sniffled, "Duncan, I'm a doctor. I save lives. I don't take them. I can't start wanting to take them."
Duncan remained silent for a moment, coming to terms with the information, then he nodded his head, accepting it.
"Duncan," Anne stated before they shared a hug.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Tori looked up as she and Richie heard a knock on the door. She noticed that it was daytime, and they were still in bed.
"Who could it be?" Richie muttered as he got a shirt on while Tori got some pants on.
"Anyone home? It's Anne Lindsey."
Tori and Richie looked at each other before they hurried to make themselves look presentable and answered the door to see Anne. She looked as if she was about to leave the country.
"Leaving Paris?" Richie asked.
"Yeah," Anne answered, "I'm afraid so."
She then proceeded to explain what happened to the couple, regarding the immortal life, MacLeod, and the baby.
"That's too bad," Richie stated, "but it's understandable that you want to keep your baby safe."
"Richie's right," Tori added, "and not everyone can handle the immortal life."
"We hope you have a wonderful life with your baby," Tori stated, "and I hope you and the baby live a happy and healthy life."
"Thanks, Tori," Anne replied before the two women shared a hug. She eyed Richie, "Ahh, I'm going to miss you as well."
"Same here," Richie replied, "Take care of yourself Anne."
He kissed her cheek, "You and the baby."
"It's not me you should be worried about," Anne replied, "Bye guys."
"Bye, Anne," Tori smiled, "Take care of yourself."
"Will do," Anne replied before she turned and left them.
Richie and Tori glanced at each other as Anne drove away.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"You have what?!" Tori asked in surprise as she and Richie were talking to Jack on the laptop, "Who is coming with us to this investigation?"
"The well renown Watcher Adam Pierson will be joining us in our investigation at the manor," Jack answered.
"So what's going on at this manor?" Richie asked.
"This manor down south of Paris," Jack answered, "the IUA believes it to be haunted by an evil entity, and Adam likes this sort of stuff and wants to observe immortals investigating as Intergalatic Union Agency Agents."
"He's more than welcome to come," Tori stated, "If Joe can bend the rules to hang out with MacLeod, I don't see why Adam can't come to this investigation. It'll be quite fun."
"I believe so too," Jack nodded, "We'll see you guys before sundown."
"We'll see you then," Tori nodded.
The call ended before she glanced over at Richie. He looked at her, confused.
"What?" Richie quipped, "You look like you know something's up."
"Because I know who "Adam Pierson" really is," Tori answered.
"What do you mean by that?"
"Remember the files we saw the other day when we saw Methos?" Tori asked.
Richie glanced up, "I believe so. We saw an old picture of Methos from many years ago, as well as a picture of Adam."
"Exactly!" Tori exclaimed, "They're the same person. It looks like we are about to meet the legendary immortal, Methos."
They both looked on in surprise and anticipation.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Tori sighed as she and Richie walked to the outside area of the old manor. Jack was standing there waiting for them. Ten other agents made it to the investigation with them.
"I think this is going to be quite interesting with this entity we are about to investigate," Jack stated.
"Is it intergalactic, or something from Earth?" Tori asked.
"I think it's something from another dimension," Jack answered, "From what our files stated, this entity came from a Hell Dimension, hence, that's why it is an evil being that we need to keep an eye on."
"I wonder where Adam could be?" Richie muttered.
Suddenly, he, Jack and Tori sensed the Buzz.
"Guess we're about to find out," Richie stated, raising his voice to where the others could hear him.
The group looked to see a dark haired man arrive at the area. Tori smiled as she recognized the man right away.
"Our guest of honor is here," Jack declared.
"Hello," "Adam" replied, "You guys must be the Intergalactic Union Agency Agents investigating this manor, which is haunted by an entity from a Hell dimension."
"Yes, we are," Tori nodded.
"And I understand you three are immortals who are a part of the IUA," "Adam" glanced over at Tori, Richie and Jack, "My name is Adam Pierson, and I..."
"You can save the Adam Pierson cover," Tori spoke up, "I know that you are the legendary immortal Methos."
There was a pause of stunned silence. Methos tried opening his mouth as he was unsure how she knew how she knew, or try to deny it, but he knew that he couldn't deny who he was to a fellow immortal, especially to one who was from a well known family.
"You got me," Methos spoke up, breaking the silence, "I happen to be Methos, the oldest living immortal. I also know that you are a family that is well known, that includes the legendary Flash Gordon."
Richie looked surprised, not only that he was seeing Methos in person, but the fact that he knew about Tori's family. Then again, that shouldn't have been surprising to either of them given that Methos was over five thousand years old.
"This manor sounded like an interesting idea," Methos stated as he eyed the exterior, "It's beautiful on the outside, but on the interior, it is haunted by an entity from a Hell Dimension. The supernatural stuff is something that I am into, even under my Watcher alias. I don't think I told MacLeod that though."
"You met MacLeod?" Richie asked.
"Yeah," Methos nodded, "I helped him get justice for a watcher he killed before Kalas finally got arrested."
Tori and Richie hugged each other in relief.
"You two seemed relieved that he's out of your hair," Methos noted.
"When we first met Kalas," Richie explained, "he tortured me, and told me how he wanted to mess with my vocal chords like what happened to him to make Mac suffer."
"Yikes," Methos replied.
"But Kalas is in jail now, right?" Tori assured Richie, comforting her boyfriend.
"Yes," Methos nodded, "and he's not getting out any time soon."
"I'd prefer if he lost his head," Tori said, "but Kalas being in jail would work just as well."
Tori, Richie and Methos glanced at each other, processing everything that recently happened.
"Well," Jack walked over to the three, "You think we should be getting in here to start our investigation?"
"That sounds like a plan," Tori replied.
Methos smiled as he, Tori, Richie and Jack walked into the manor with the rest of the IUA agents in tow.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"This is kind of strange," Richie stated.
"How is it strange?" Tori asked.
"Not much is going on yet," Richie answered, "So far, all we're seeing is the lights flickering and short instances of the screens of our monitors flickering."
"That's still signs," Methos pointed out, "The entity hasn't fully shown itself yet, but it's showing signs of its presence. Take it from me because I've witnessed something similar to this back in 1890, at a manor similar to this one."
"I believe you," Richie replied, "it's just I've never seen a haunting, much less...evil spirit before."
"We should spread out," Jack suggested, "Maybe the entity will try to show up then."
"That's not a good idea," Tori cautioned, "Could we try small groups, and not everyone be separated? That way we get a better chance."
"Small groups sounds like a better option," Methos nodded.
The next thing Richie knew, he was in a group with Tori, Methos and a male agent.
"What do you think, Darren?" Tori asked.
"This seems to be the best option," Darren answered, "We won't be able to screw up much given how haunted manors are."
"I have to agree with that statement," Methos nodded.
The group entered a large room. They looked around as they saw a large glass ceiling, and noticed all the fancy art in the room.
"This is a really old..." Tori stated as she looked at the artifacts, "These look like something you'd see in an old Gothic film or something."
"I believe that would be correct," Methos glanced at the artifacts before glancing at her, "Given I've been around for over five thousand years, you'd be surprised of all that I happen to know."
"You happen to know a lot more than me, right?" Tori grinned.
"Essentially," Methos nodded.
Richie walked over to the circle in the center of the room, glancing in curiosity, especially after hearing some strange voices.
"Do you hear that?" Richie muttered. The strange voices started to becoming louder, causing him to become nervous.
"I hear it too," Tori spoke up. Richie sighed with relief, knowing he wasn't the only one hearing the voices. Methos perked up as well, "This isn't good. Rich, you better step out of that circle right away."
"What...is it cursed?" Tori asked.
Richie immediately stepped out of the circle, feeling more nervous than previously.
"I think I warned you too late," Methos muttered.
"For what?" Tori asked. The room started to become cold as well.
"When did the room become so cold?" Richie asked.
"We should get some jackets," Tori added.
"The worst has yet to come," Methos chimed in.
Before anyone else could make a move, the room became pitch black. Then the lights turned back on with the ceiling forming a ball of black mist.
"Methos!" Tori exclaimed.
"Is this the entity?" Darren asked.
"Richie, look out!" Methos shouted.
The mist make a quick move and Richie backed into a wall as the mist slowly entered his body.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Tori looked on in horror as the mist slowly entered Richie's body. Darren looked on in shock as well. Richie screamed after the mist made its way inside his body. Moments later, he was unconscious on the floor.
"Oh, Richie!" Tori cried as she hurried to her boyfriend's side.
"We have a suspected activity of the entity," Darren informed the rest of the agents, "Agent Ryan is down!"
"Get him on the sofa," Methos told the others, "We'll decide what to do then because whatever just happened, it's not good."
Tori and Darren immediately picked up Richie and laid him on the couch.
"Tori, I've never dealt with immortal possessions in all my five thousand years of life," Methos declared, "but from the looks of this, we will have to keep an eye out on your boyfriend."
"You're saying he might be possessed?" Tori asked.
"If it's the entity," Methos answered, "we may have to brace ourselves."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Tori looked on as Richie was looking himself in the mirror. Ever since the attack, he had been more cold and distant towards everyone and mostly been looking in the mirror, as well as looking at his body as if he was seeing it for the first time.
He had been avoiding the others and this investigation for the past two days as well, albeit not much have been going on other than the flickering lights and screens, with the occasional blackouts as well as the manor being icy cold. Richie hadn't been eating or sleeping much either.
"Hi, Richie," Tori greeted her boyfriend.
Slowly, Richie turned and to her surprise, he looked pale and had dark circles under his eyes, not too dark thankfully, but it was still concerning, "Tori."
"What's going on with you, Richie?" Jack asked as he walked into the room, "You've been essentially standing there in that room after you came to from your attack."
"Why don't you mind your business in what I do, Banks?" Richie retorted.
"Jack, I think there's something that is more concerning about Richie than taking part of this mission," Tori stated, "He hadn't been sleeping much since the attack."
Jack looked on, "You have a good point there."
"I don't need a mother or father to look after me," Richie retorted coldly.
"We're just concerned, Richie," Tori replied, "This isn't like you."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Methos looked on as Tori and Jack were arguing with the thing that was once "Richie". He knew deep down what was going on. Ever since Richie had been attacked, he had been acting strange, and it was more than just the lack of sleep, explaining the dark circles under his eyes.
For the past two days, Methos observed that this being had been possessing Richie's body. This entity had never possessed an immortal body before, and seems to be enjoying it. He swallowed hard, knowing what he had to do.
"This just isn't like Richie!" Tori exclaimed, her voice shaking as she and Jack walked over to Methos' side.
"That's because it is not Richie," Methos spoke up.
"Not Richie?" Jack asked.
"What do you mean?" Tori added.
"Your friend has been possessed by that being for the past two days now," Methos answered.
Jack and Tori glanced at each other in shock.
"How do you even know this?" Jack asked, frustrated, "I mean, you're over five thousand years old..."
"And I happened to have run into this old house back in 1870," Methos answered.
"I better inform the others right away," Jack replied in a haste.
"I got something else in my mind," Methos stated, "I'm afraid there's not much the IUA can do."
"What are you going to do?" Tori asked.
"This warrants an exorcism," Methos answered before he hurried out of the manor. Along the way, Methos reflected on losing his dear friend when the evil entity possessed him back in 1870. He wasn't about to lose Richie Ryan the same way, albeit, there's no possible way an immortal could die from an exorcism.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan sighed as he put down a book. There wasn't much he could do at this point since Maurice's niece Simone was probably on her way to Venice, by now.
He suddenly sensed the Buzz, "Kagan?"
Duncan stood up, prepared for a fight, but instead, he saw Methos enter the barge.
"Easy there," Methos told him, "I'm not here for a fight."
Duncan looked at him, surprised to see him after so long, "You disappear from sight, and all of a sudden you're back."
"I was looking into supernatural business," Methos answered, "but the investigation has taken a shocking turn to say the least."
"What do you mean?" Duncan asked.
"You've got a friend, Richie Ryan," Methos explained, "one of the IUA Agents. He and his lovely girlfriend Tori Gordon ran into a terrifying entity from a Hell Dimension."
Duncan glanced over in worry, "And?"
"Richie is now possessed by this entity," Methos replied, "He has been for the past two days now."
Duncan paled in shock. He stepped back and paced the room. First he was dealing with Kagan, now he had to worry about his young friend being possessed by some entity, "It has never possessed an immortal before."
"I know," Methos nodded, "That's why I believe this to be a challenge. Leave the exorcism of Richie Ryan to me. I will save your friend."
"You better," Duncan replied.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"Richie, you better come on out of there!" Darren shouted as the agents were looking for him.
No answer.
"Richie, we're worried about you," Tori called out, "Please, where ever you're hiding. I know you're scared, but we'll get through this together. I know we can."
She was startled upon hearing a devilish laughter.
"I don't like this," Jack muttered. The other agents were startled as well.
Slowly, Richie emerged from a shadowed area of the room, with an evil smile on his face. Tori looked on as his usual warm eyes flashed a sinister red.
"Richie, what has happened to you?" Tori asked tearfully.
"Sweetheart, I hate to break it to you," "Richie" replied in his normal voice before speaking in a deep demonic voice, "Richie Ryan doesn't live here anymore."
"You son of a bitch," Jack demanded, "What have you done with him?!"
"I have your little friend trapped," the being answered, "He is trapped...within me, and I have no intentions of ever freeing him."
Jack took some deep breaths to try and compose himself while comforting Tori, who was crying periodically.
"I have to say," "Richie" stated as he looked at his body, "I've never possessed an immortal before. Something new to me, even though I've heard of immortals, and this immortal just seemed ripe for the picking after I lost my last host. He's young, strong..."
"And not yours for long!" a voice yelled from not too far from the group.
Tori noticed that Methos have arrived with two priests in tow.
"Agents of the IUA," Methos introduced the two priests, "Meet our two priests performing the exorcism to save Richie: Bardot and Allard."
Bardot, a middle aged red haired man, and Allard, a middle aged dark haired man, each waved at the group.
"If holy ground can keep us safe," Jack stated, "we have a chance."
"We're really doing an exorcism?" Tori asked nervously, "Will this work on...Richie?"
"This is our best bet," Methos answered.
Tori noticed "Richie" appearing freaked out upon seeing the priests nearby, "If they will be able to save my boyfriend, I will be forever grateful."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Methos looked on as Bardot and Allard were tying "Richie" to the top posts of the bed while Jack and another agent were tying his ankles to the bottom posts of the bed.
"While this is destroying ancient material," Methos stated, "I truly understand this is for a good cause."
"Methos, please," the being pleaded, using Richie's voice, "This isn't necessary! I'm fine! Tell them, Tori!"
Tori looked away, not willing to mess up anything that might cause Richie to be gone forever.
"Jack?"
"You're not him," Jack looked away, not willing to be fooled as well, "You're not him."
"This is just great!" "Richie" exclaimed, "This is worst than when Piton set me up when I was defending that tramp Maya from him, only to be arrested and stuck in jail as a result of being set up until MacLeod took his head, yeah? Tori, you remember that? She mentioned how much she hated Maya, until she died."
"Richie remembered that," Tori stated, "Could the entity remember as well?"
"It has his body and even his memories," Methos stressed, "but it's not him."
"I know how you feel, Madame Gordon," Bardot glanced at Tori's distressed state, "I have this niece. She was a detective. She went missing over a year ago."
Tori glanced over at him, "I'm sorry to hear that."
"Let us begin, shall we?" Allard told his partner.
"That we shall," Bardot nodded before they walked over to "Richie".
"Tori," "Richie" pleaded again, "please, don't let them do this to me!"
"Don't listen to the entity," Methos held Tori by her arms, "it's your chance to save Richie."
"Tori!" "Richie" called out again, struggling against the bondage.
"Start the procedure!" Methos called out to the priests, "Send that entity back to where it came from and free Richie Ryan from its grasp!"
The priests started praying in French before beginning their incantations. Tori started crying upon hearing Richie's screams. Methos made sure to comfort her.
Methos took deep breaths upon this hellish concerto. Tori tried breaking out to try to save her boyfriend, but it took everything Methos had in him not to let her break free, especially as he remembered something MacLeod said to him before he left the barge.
"You better get that entity out of Richie," Duncan warned him, "If he doesn't come out of this, I sure hope his ghost will haunt you, because I know I will never let you live it down."
"Tori," a weak voice called out from nearby.
Methos and Tori recognized the voice, "Richie?"
"It appears that he is trying to fight this thing from within," Allard stated.
"He's starting to come back," Bardot added.
"It looks like it's working!" a female agent shouted from nearby.
"No!" the entity shouted, "I will not allow this! I've waited too long to let my chance at an immortal body go to waste!"
Everyone looked on in horror as Richie's body was suddenly convulsing. Tori started sobbing on Methos' shoulder.
"Just a little more," Methos stated, "and Richie will be free."
"Get out of him now!" Bardot and Allard commanded in unison.
"Noo!" the entity screamed as black mist was forced out of Richie's body. Richie then screamed loudly as the entity was leaving his body before he passed out.
Methos chanted in French himself forming a portal which the black mist entered into. After the mist entered in the portal all the way, the portal vanished.
The priests blessed the manor.
"The manor is now cleansed of the evil spirit," Bardot declared.
"What was that about?" Jack asked.
"I knew about a portal which would send the entity back to where it came from," Methos explained, "all these nice gentlemen had to do was exorcise it out of Richie, and I would take it from here."
"What about Agent Ryan?" Darren asked.
Jack and Tori went to check on Richie. He looked unconscious and they were checking for vitals. After a tense minute, tensity changed to relief.
"Thank God," Jack sighed with relief, "His pulse is steady, but weak. Vitals are stable. I estimate a day or two of rest, and he'll be back to his normal self."
Methos sighed with relief.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Tori looked over at Bardot as the other agents were clearing out the area, "I hope that you are able to find your niece."
"Thank you," Bardot replied, "I hope so too."
"We'll take matters from here," Jack told her as he eyed her, "You should stay here with Richie to keep an eye on him."
She didn't need to be told twice as she wiped tears away from her face, sniffing.
"Tori?" Methos called to her as she walked to her boyfriend's side. Tori glanced over at him for a moment.
"Methos," Tori smiled.
"I'm glad we were able to save Richie," Methos told her, "Not many people were fortunate."
"Mister Pierson is right," Allard chimed in, "Not everyone is fortunate to survive exorcisms. It was a hard one, but we were successful."
Tori nodded before approaching Richie's bedside. She didn't pay attention to everyone leaving the room, but she could tell there was no one in the room except for the two of them: her and Richie.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Tori heard gasping and coughing when she woke up. She had no idea how long it had been since the exorcism happened. Then, he groaned in pain.
Tori noticed Richie was sweating and the circles under his eyes were fading away. He was a bit more normal than he was while he was possessed.
"Tori?" Richie looked at her, confused, "What happened?"
"Don't worry," Tori assured him, "it's all right."
Richie noticed tears staining his girlfriend's face, "What's the matter? What happened?"
Tori then proceeded to explain the gist of what happened during the past two days.
"Oh man," Richie laid back on the bed, "That explains why I'm tied up like this."
They both sensed the Buzz. They looked to see Methos enter the room.
"Hey, Rich," Methos said. "Tori."
Jack followed him moments later, "Welcome back, Richie."
Methos and Jack untied Richie, now that he was back to normal.
"How do you feel?" Methos asked.
"I feel kind of dumb," Richie answered with a small smile.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Richie smiled as he was laying on the IUA medical bed, resting from his ordeal while Tori was by his side, holding his hand.
"How are you holding, Richard?" Janet asked as she walked over to them, "I can't imagine what it's like to be an immortal possessed, let alone possessed at all."
"I will tell you that I wouldn't wish the experience on anyone," Richie answered, "That's for sure."
Suddenly, Tori and Richie sensed the Buzz.
"Richie?!"
The three looked to see Duncan hurrying over to the area. He looked relieved to see Richie resting on the medical bed, "Richie."
"Mac," Richie glanced at his friend.
"Boy are we glad to see you," Tori quipped.
"Richie, thank God," Duncan sighed with relief, holding his friend's hand, "I heard what happened. Methos told me everything. I'm so glad you're okay."
"Oh, Mac," Richie smiled at his friend.
"It's all right, tough guy" Duncan assured him, "I'm here."
"I wouldn't wish possession on anyone," Richie stated, "let alone an immortal."
Duncan smiled, Tori hugged Richie and the three shared a moment together.
