Defenders Chronicles: Highlander

Chapter Fourteen: The Darkness
"So, how's my love line doing?" Richie asked as Greta was walking down the area with him, with Tori in tow.
"I see you're very romantic," Greta answered.
"Yeah," Richie replied, "well, I've had my moments."
"You attract women not only of beauty," Greta told him, "but of intelligence."
She briefly glanced at Tori before continuing, which was something that caught Richie's attention, at least for a moment. Tori only looked on while the three were walking.
"You're very good at this," Richie told her before asking, "Do you, uh...see any attraction for me in the very near future?"
"Well," Greta answered, "I'm not sure about the very near future, but I do see an attraction for you in the future."
"What do you mean?" Richie asked, "I can live with frivolous."
"Well," Greta smiled as she briefly looked at Tori, "your romance might be just around the corner, and you just don't know it."
Duncan looked at Tessa, who asked him, "So, you see anything you like?"
"Yeah," Duncan answered, staring at her, "you know, I look at you sometimes, and I realize how beautiful you are."
"Maybe," Tessa paused for a moment before suggesting, "we should go home."
"Maybe."
"Hey guys," Richie walked to the group with Tori and a beautiful blonde woman in tow, "I would like for you to meet..."
"Hello, I'm Greta," the woman introduced herself, "I'm the seventh daughter of the seventh son. I see things people don't even look for."
"As I was saying, this is Greta," Richie introduced her to Duncan and Tessa, "Would you care for some wine, Greta?"
"Thank you," Greta replied taking a glass of wine and taking a sip, "As I was saying, a few dollars spent on Greta's gifts could be the best investment of your life."
"The rap alone is worth the investment," Duncan stated.
"You can say that again," Tori quipped.
"No, Mac," Richie interjected, "trust me. She has real talent."
"I can see that by looking at her," Duncan replied.
"Come on," Tessa said, "it would be fun to have my palm read."
"Only if she tells you what you want to hear," Duncan replied with humor.
"I see you're a woman of taste," Greta replied before taking Tessa's hand and reading her palm, "Oh, that was a rush."
"Are you okay?" Tessa asked.
"Yeah," Greta answered before continuing her reading, "Where were we?"
She continued the reading for a minute before blinking and looking around, "What the hell what that about?"
She let go of Tessa's hand.
"What's wrong?" Tessa asked, concerned.
"Ah, it's no big deal," Richie assured her, "She's just having a psychic experience, right?"
"That's it," Greta replied, "I must have...I mean, I did."
"Greta, I was kidding," Richie told her.
"Hey," Duncan told his lover, "don't worry."
"You have to get the hell out of this city," Greta told Tessa.
"What are you talking about?" Tessa asked, looking nervous.
"Trouble," Greta answered, "and you're in the middle of it."
"I think we've heard enough," Duncan stood up and replied, "thanks."
He stood up.
"Hey, come on," Richie tried to ease the tension, "We're all having fun here."
He looked at Greta, asking her, "I mean, this is just a joke, right?"
"Look," Greta was adamant with her statement, "I saw what I saw. I think this is for real."
"I'm sure it is," Duncan replied before looking at Tessa, "let's go."
"I know this is crazy as hell," Greta said, "but I saw swords."
"It's okay," Tessa replied, "thanks for the reading."
Duncan comforted his lover as they walked away, "Come on. Don't let it bother you."
"She seemed so upset," Tessa stated, "What about the swords? How could she know that?"
"Well, maybe it was a coincidence," Duncan tried to comfort his lover, "Or maybe she really did have a psychic experience and caught a glimpse of our life together."
"She scared me," Tessa stated in fear.
"Hey, Tess, nothing's written in stone," Duncan comforted her, "Whatever she saw, or didn't see, we decide our future. It's whatever we want it to be."
"Hold me," Tessa said before she smiled as he held her, "I love you, Duncan."
"I love you too, sweetheart," Duncan smiled at her.
He remembered an encounter with a gypsy, who told him back in 1848, "MacLeod, you will bury many women, but you will marry none! You will always be alone. Do you hear me? Alone."
Suddenly, Duncan looked back at Tessa, "Let's get married."
"What do you mean, married?" Tessa asked.
"I mean married as in...married," Duncan answered.
"You mean, as in a proposal?" Tessa asked in surprise, "You mean as in "Will you marry me" married?"
"Is this better?" Duncan went down on one knee and sang, "Will you marry me? Will you marry me?"
"Get up!" Tessa exclaimed with a chuckle, "There are people."
"Well, you still haven't answered my question," Duncan replied before asking people nearby, "Do you think she should marry me?"
"Yes," a woman answered.
"I think she should marry me," Duncan said to everyone in the area, including Tessa, "Yeah? I think she should marry me. What do you think?"
"All right," Tessa finally answered, "All right. All right. Yes!"
"Yes?" Duncan asked.
"I'll marry you!" Tessa answered.
"Yes!" Duncan exclaimed happily before picking her up, and spinned her in a circle.
"Why now?" Tessa asked before she noticed him seeing two men nearby, "What are you looking at?"
"Uh...probably nothing," Duncan replied as he gently put down Tessa, "I'll be right back."
Tori gently tapped Greta on the shoulder, "Excuse me?"
She looked at her, "Yes?"
"Um, out of curiosity," Tori asked, "could you care to read my palm? I'm curious to know what my future holds."
"Sure," Greta nodded as she held Tori's hand and read her palm.
"Wow," Richie quipped, "glad that you're joining in on the fun."
Tori glared at him as if to say, "Don't push your luck."
"Hmmm. Interesting," Greta read Tori's palm, "I also see a love life for you in your future."
She glanced at Richie for a moment before returning to the reading, "I also see lighting, and swords as well. Not as scary as your friend's, but still kind of intense."
"I see," Tori nodded as Greta finished the reading.
"We should be heading back," Richie suggested, "Mac and Tess will be expecting us back."
"Of course," Tori nodded before joining her friend as they started to walk away.
As they were about to leave the bar, they ran into Tessa, who seemed to be happy with something.
"What's going on?" Tori asked.
"I thought you guys were taking off?" Richie added.
"Richie, Tori," Tessa answered, "Duncan just asked me to marry him."
"He what?" Richie replied.
"He proposed to me!" Tessa exclaimed happily.
"For real?!" Richie and Tori asked in unison.
"Yeah."
"Just now?!" Tori and Richie asked in unison again.
Tessa nodded.
"Why?" Richie looked around, confused, "Well, no, no, Tess, don't. I mean, I know he loves you and all, but I mean, after all this time, it seems a little strange, don't you think?"
"I agree," Tori quipped.
"Well, no," Tessa replied, "not to me."
"Well, I gotta say," Tori replied with a smile, "it's about time."
"Yeah," Richie added, "congratulations."
Duncan, Tessa, Tori, and Richie were sitting at the stairway of the antique store, enjoying a glass of champagne.
"You know," Duncan stated, "it's going to be funny opening the store again tomorrow."
"Oh yeah," Tori smirked.
"So," Richie asked, "is this going to be a traditional wedding or what?"
"What do you mean?" Tessa asked.
"I mean," Richie continued, "have you thought about who's going to give you away?"
"Come on, Richie," Tessa stated, "give me a break."
"See, I was actually kind of hoping that Mac would ask me to be his best man," Richie stated.
"And I'm hoping Tessa would ask me to be her maid of honor," Tori added, getting into the conversation.
Duncan laughed, "I wouldn't have it any other way."
Tessa added, "Neither would I."
"All right," Richie smiled before raising his glass, "Cheers."
Duncan, Tessa and Tori followed suit, and their glasses all clinked, "Cheers!"
"Tess," Richie held her glass for her to take, "Mac, can you give me a hand for a second?"
Tori followed Duncan's glance and they noticed a man looking in through the window.
"Look after Tess and Richie," Duncan quietly told Tori. She nodded before he took off.
"Mac?" Tessa looked on as her fiance was leaving.
"A simple no would have worked," Richie replied.
"This is getting weird," Tori stated quietly.
"What is?" Tessa asked, confused.
Tori pursed her lips a moment before saying, "The less you know, the better off."
It all happened so fast. Tori heard some strange noises. She knew this wasn't normal, and she hurried to the antique store to find a mysterious man had just tasered Richie unconscious and was about to grab Tessa.
"Hey!" Tori shouted before preparing to fight the man, "Leave her alone!"
She tried fighting the man, but he managed to gain the upper hand against her, and knocked her out cold.
The last thing Tori heard before completely falling unconscious was Tessa pleading, "Take what you want."
And then, the man answering, "I will."
Before she could react, her vision completely faded to black.
The next thing Tori knew, she heard footsteps, followed by Duncan calling out, "Tessa? Richie, Tori! What happened?"
"Some guy knocked Richie out," Tori answered as she came to fully and stood up as Duncan helped Richie to a chair.
"He came in here and zapped me in the neck," Richie added.
"What guy?" Duncan asked.
"I don't know," Tori answered, "He never gave out his name."
"What did he look like?" Duncan asked.
"A big, tall guy," Richie answered, "blonde hair."
"Where's Tessa?" Duncan asked.
"I don't know," Richie answered.
"That man must have taken her," Tori spoke up, "we're sorry."
"It's not your fault," Duncan assured the two, "neither of you. I just have a feeling I've just been set up."
"By who?" Tori asked. She heard a beep on her ear piece just as the phone was ringing. She quickly got out her small computer and connected the device, so she could get the recording of the call.
"This is MacLeod," Duncan answered the phone. They both heard laughter on the other end of the line.
"Listen, you son of a bitch," Duncan warned the man, "if anything happens to Tessa..."
"Wait, don't tell me," the man on the phone replied, "I'm a dead man, right?"
"If you're lucky," Duncan replied.
"How'd I guess?" the man asked, "Don't worry, buddy. You'll get your shot, and to show you I'm not such a bad guy, I'm going to let you talk to her."
"Mac," Tessa spoke on the other line in fear.
"Tessa," Tori clasped her hands to her mouth in shock.
"Tessa," Duncan asked calmly, "are you all right?"
"I'm fine," Tessa told her fiance, "Don't come! It's a trap!"
I knew it! Tori thought, listening to the conversation.
"Where are you?" Duncan asked.
"Of course it's a trap," the man spoke up, "That won't matter now, will it? We'll keep in touch."
The line was disconnected.
"I'll do what I can to figure out where Tessa is being held," Tori told Duncan, "and the identity of the man who took her."
Tori arrived at the the forest shoreline, with Richie in tow as he was holding a manila folder.
"Did you get it?" Duncan asked.
"Yeah. Everything you asked for," Richie answered as he handed him the folder, "Something to drink?"
Duncan looked through the folder of the contents and accepted the drink offered.
"I couldn't find much about the man," Tori stated with frustration, "fat load of good that's been."
"So, what now?" Richie asked.
"I'm not sure," Duncan answered, reflecting on the man he came across earlier, "I just killed the person who could have led me to her...don't ask me to explain."
Duncan looked at the contents in the folder, "There's got to be something in here."
"I can't believe Greta called all this," Richie stated in surprise, "Are you beginning to believe in this psychic stuff?"
"I don't know, Richie," Duncan answered, "sometimes, just because something can't be proven now, it doesn't mean it'll never be proven."
"You probably wouldn't have believed aliens existed a couple of years ago," Tori stated, glancing at Richie.
"A couple of years ago, I would have never believed an immortal existed," Richie added, "So, uh, never been married before, have you, Mac?"
"No," Duncan answered.
"Well," Richie replied, "I guess without being able to have kids, there's not much point, right?"
"Something like that, yeah," Duncan nodded.
"Then why now?" Richie asked before pausing, "I mean, I know it's probably none of my business, and basically I shouldn't be asking..."
"Richie," Tori gently tapped his arm.
"That's twice you're right, yeah," Duncan told Richie.
"Sorry," Richie apologized.
Duncan sighed, "It's okay. I'm sorry myself. Look, it might be just because of what Greta said, or maybe, it's just the thought of losing her."
Tori sighed sadly. She grew fond of Tessa ever since meeting her, and she assumed Richie felt the same way. She pursed her lips a moment before telling her ally, "Don't worry, Mac."
"She's right," Richie added, "we'll get her back."
"I've been around a long time," Duncan told his friends.
"Over four hundred years," Tori nodded.
"I'd say that's quite a bit of time, yeah," Richie added.
"Yeah, but sometimes I feel older than that," Duncan stated, "I've seen so many things. I've fought so many battles. People become a part of your life, and then they...they just die. It all stays with you. You live with it...their hopes, their dreams; their pain, their love...Tessa makes me feel so young. Every time I see her, it's like the first time. Every time I touch her...I..."
"Sounds like to me you're in love," Richie replied.
"It sounds the same way to me," Tori added.
"Come on," Duncan told his friends, "I want to go back to the store. We've got to be by a phone."
"Of course," Tori nodded.
"All right," Richie added.
Duncan glanced at the stuff in the folder.
"Anything?" Richie asked as he and Tori walked over to him. Duncan shook his head as Greta approached them.
"I thought you wanted no part of this," Richie told her as Tori glared at her, disapprovingly.
"I didn't," Greta replied, "but I can't get it out of my head. I keep having these visions...these images. It's making me crazy."
"Did you see anything new?" Duncan asked.
"I saw you," she answered.
"What was I doing?"
"I don't know," Greta answered as she sat down on a nearby bench, "I mean, all I get is bits and pieces. It's not like I can put it in a tape, and watch a movie."
"Well," Duncan asked, "what do you think I was doing?"
"Fighting with somebody," Greta answered, "the guy in the mask, I think. Look, this is all new to me. I read palms, I make a few bucks. It's a gig, not a life style."
Duncan looked at his palm and sat down beside her, "Read my palm."
"What good will that do?" Greta asked.
"Please," Duncan insisted.
Greta looked into Duncan's palm, "My God, you've got a life line the size of the Mississippi."
She was startled, "Wait a minute...how old are you?"
Greta then saw various flashes, seeing different points in Duncan's life; his first death, taking a Quickenings, among other things.
"What are you?" Greta asked in shock, upon seeing the unusual visions.
"What did you see?" Duncan asked.
"Halloween," Greta answered, "Guys in costumes. This big old house, and then it all just went black."
"Well, you mean the vision stopped?"
"No," Greta explained, "it was different than that. It was pitch black. You know, like somebody turned out the lights or something, but blacker."
"Was it night?" Duncan asked. Greta shook her head, "Well, what color were the walls? I mean, I need details!"
"What details? Black is black."
"Well, was there anything else of Tessa or the man holding her?"
"No."
"There must have been something."
"What do you want from me? You want me to make up something so you feel better?"
"No," Duncan insisted, "I want you to give me something that I can use."
He paused before continuing, "I'm sorry. I know you're doing you're best. Was there anything else? What about the house?"
"It was an old Tudor, I think," Greta answered.
"Was there anything special about it?"
"No. I mean, it's probably nothing."
"What?"
"The windows of the house...some of them were colored glass. Look, I told you it's not much."
"It's more than what I had."
"Wait. This is my home number," Greta wrote a number inside of a matchbook cover, and handed it to Duncan, "I won't sleep until this is over."
"Thanks," Duncan replied.
"Let me know what happens, okay?"
"Yeah."
"Did he call?" Duncan asked.
Tori and Richie glanced at him as the latter answered, "No, Mac, what's he waiting for?"
"That's his game," Duncan opened his laptop.
"And what are you doing?" Richie asked.
"I'm looking for a Tudor house that Greta saw," Duncan answered.
"Tudor house?" Tori quipped.
"Mac, there are tons Tudor houses in the city," Richie chimed in.
"Some are registered as historical landmarks, though," Duncan stated.
"Sure," Richie replied, "dozens."
"Yeah," Duncan stated, "but not all of them have colored glass windows."
It was night time as Tori was preparing her laptop in case the captor decided to make his move.
"What are you doing?" Richie asked.
"I'll be able to have access to what you are seeing," Tori answered, "once I connect you with this."
She placed a mechanical device on Richie's wrist.
"What's this?" Richie asked.
"A little camera," Tori answered, "the captor won't be able to see you, but we will be able to see him."
Suddenly, the phone rang and Tori connected the ear piece to hear the phone call again as Richie answered the phone, "Hello?"
"Is this Richie?" the man asked.
"Who is this?" Richie asked.
"Still stunned."
"Why don't you come find out."
"Ha ha," the man replied, "funny man. Let me talk to MacLeod."
"He's not here right now," Richie replied.
"That's too bad. Give him a message for me. You tell him his girl is at Thirty-Four Ninety Briarcliff Street, and you tell him I'm expecting him."
The call disconnected.
"Thirty-Four Ninety Briarcliff," Tori stated, "I sent MacLeod the address. It's crunch time!"
Richie hurried out of the store.
"Wait a minute!" Tori exclaimed, "Richie!"
She sighed roughly as the laptop screen was showing everything through Richie's point of view, "At least he was generous enough to have the camera on."
"That I did, Slick Vic," Richie replied.
"I hope you know what you're doing," Tori replied.
"Honestly," Richie said, "me too."
Richie arrived at the address where Tessa was being held. He walked over to the house.
"Heads up!" Tori shouted via communicator on his wrist. Moments later, Richie was grabbed. It was Duncan.
"Mac!" Richie exclaimed.
"Quiet!" Duncan told his ward, "What are you doing here?"
"He called you after you left," Richie answered.
"He's right," Tori added, "Tessa is being held in that house."
"I know," Duncan replied, "I want you outside, Richie. Tessa's the only one I want to worry about in there, right?"
"Right."
"Right?"
"Right."
Richie watched as Duncan entered into the house, "Wrong."
"You're going to disobey his orders, aren't you?" Tori asked.
"Yeap." Richie answered before entering the house.
"Richie, heads up," Tori informed him, "you got company."
Before he can make a move, Richie was knocked out from behind.
Tori slammed her fist against the laptop, "Richie? Richie?!"
She cursed as the video feed was disconnected. She then stood up from her seat and hurried to the area, "Time for me to bail Richie out of a jam."
With that, she hurried out of the store and to the Tudor house where the others were.
Duncan entered the house. Pallin, the man who had held Tessa captive the whole time, held his sword and the goggles on his forehead.
"Welcome, Highlander," Pallin greeted Duncan, "You got here sooner than I thought."
"Where's Tessa?" Duncan asked.
"Here," Pallin placed the goggles over his eyes.
"Who are you?" Duncan asked.
Suddenly, the spotlights turned off and Pallin's night goggle vision engaged. Duncan took off his jacket, and moved into defensive position. The Hunter toyed with the Immortal and Duncan actually managed some decent parries in the darkness.
"Oooh, very impressive," Pallin stated, before cutting Duncan across the belly.
Duncan backed away, and pulled Greta's matchbook from his pocket.
"It's only a matter of time, Highlander," Pallin told him before cutting Duncan with his sword.
Duncan tossed the matchbook into the air, and hit it with the sword blade, igniting the matches and causing a flare of light.
Pallin pulled off his night vision goggles before Duncan killed him.
Then, he hurried to the next room to find Tessa handcuffed to a pole.
"Mac, thank God!" Tessa exclaimed with relief.
"Out of the way!" Duncan exclaimed and then he used his sword to break the handcuff link. Tessa hugged him, as they reunited.
"You all right?" Duncan asked.
"I'm fine," Tessa answered.
Moments later, Richie entered the room, with Tori in tow.
"We're okay too," Richie said, "if anyone cares."
"I thought I told you to stay outside, Richie," Duncan glared at both of them, "and what are you doing here?"
"I had to come here to bail somebody out after he disobeyed orders," Tori answered.
"So sue me," Richie replied.
"Take Tessa home in the car," Duncan instructed Richie, "Tori too. I'll take your bike. I want to find out a little bit more about this guy and his friends."
"Don't be too long," Tessa held Duncan's hand, "I love you."
"I love you too," Duncan replied.
With that, they broke apart and Tessa left the room with Richie and Tori.
Tori walked to the car with Tessa and Richie.
"Don't you dare do anything reckless like that again," Tori told Richie, "you had me worried sick!"
"I just wanted to help," Richie replied.
"The water's under the bridge now," Tessa replied, "let's let it slide, Tori."
"You're right, you know," Tori nodded with a smile.
Richie handed out a jacket, "Tessa."
"Thanks," Tessa replied before putting the jacket back on.
"Let's get out of here," Tori told her friends.
"Yeah," Richie nodded, "let's go."
Suddenly, a young man wearing a jacket a dewrag approached the three, "Nice car. How about a ride?"
"Some other time," Richie declined the offer before looking at the women, "Let's go."
Suddenly, the guy held the three at gunpoint, demanding, "Now! Give me your keys. I want your rings, wallet, necklace! Come on!"
"Okay! Okay!" Tessa exclaimed in fear.
The three complied by giving the mugger what they could give him, including the car keys.
"Come on! Hurry up!" the mugger demanded.
"All right!" Richie exclaimed. Tori was too scared out of her mind to try to fight back. She thought maybe she could have, but it wouldn't do any good. He might hurt her, or worse, hurt Tessa or Richie. She remained calm for the sakes of Tessa and Richie.
"That's all you got?" the mugger demanded, "You got more. Where's her purse?"
"I don't have a purse," Tessa answered, "I swear...only the rings."
"You lying bitch!" the man shouted before shooting Tessa point blank in the torso. She screamed as she fell backwards to the ground.
"No!" Tori cried out in horror.
Then the man shot Richie twice. He screamed before falling backwards to the ground himself.
"No!" Tori yelled this time as she hurried to Richie's side, certain that he was dead too, "No, no."
She barely acknowledged the three shots fired at her before everything faded to black.
Richie gasped, coughed and spasm, as he found himself laying on the ground. This couldn't have been real. That mugger had just shot him, not once, but twice. He had to be dead, or was he?
He slowly sat up, coming to terms over what was happening, "Mac, I'm still alive, and the pain...it's going away."
"Give it another minute," Duncan told him, holding Tessa's lifeless body, "and you'll be fine."
Tori gasped, reviving as well, "I hate when this happens."
She looked over to see Richie was fully alive, "Richie? You..."
"I'm one of you," Richie stated, "I'm an Immortal?"
"You always were," Duncan told him.
"You knew all along, didn't you?" Richie asked.
"Yes," Duncan answered.
"Tessa too...is she..." Richie asked, sounding hopeful.
Tori glanced over at Duncan, who was looking at the love that was laying in his arms, like a crushed dove. He slowly shook his head.
"Mac?" Tori urged this time.
"No," Duncan finally answered.
"Oh no," Tori sobbed before she fell into Richie's arms. Richie comforted her, tears rimming his eyes as well.
Duncan was looking around the store one last time. The love of his life Tessa was gone. He remembered many things about her, from the first time he met her, the romantic times he had with her, the good times, and the bad times.
He loved her, and she loved him, but now she was gone, and he felt alone again.
As he prepared to walk out the store for the final time, Duncan sensed the Buzz. He knew there wasn't just one immortal with him this time, there were two immortals. Richie was now immortal, and now he had to teach him, just as Amanda taught Tori.
Duncan knew what he had to do.
Tori sighed sadly as she laid her head on Richie's shoulders for a moment. She remembered Tessa as a nice woman, someone she considered family, like Duncan and Richie. She would miss Tessa for years to come. Tori was grateful to have Richie by her side, immortal just like she was.
She stood up straight moments later upon sensing the Buzz.
Duncan arrived. He went in front of Richie and faced him, "You're one of us now."
He gave Richie the keys to the store, "Sell it."
Tori could tell Duncan was devastated by Tessa's death. She could tell this was only the beginning of things that were to come in regards to her being immortal, as well as Richie being immortal.
"Richie, Tori," Duncan told his friends as they faced him, "Watch your heads."
With that, Duncan headed towards the T-Bird. Richie and Tori followed, holding hands.
I personally see this as a foreshadowing with Richie and Tori being a couple in the future, as well as the future Quickening awaiting Tori.
Of all the things that are a foreshadowing for both Richie and Tori.
Bar the bits with Tori, this was actually a cut scene from the Highlander series episode "Counterfeit Part One", revealing a flash back. Speaking of which, this scene would later be a flashback scene in the season 4 episode "Leader of the Pack".
