Chapter Forty: Double Jeopardy
"Mac, would you please try and relax?" Richie asked as Duncan appeared to be nervous as the three walked over to the airport, with Duncan holding a wrapped rose.
"Richie's right," Tori chimed in, "You cannot make Anne's plane land any sooner."
"I'll tell you what," Duncan replied, "I've got a great idea. Why don't you two explain it to her."
"So she's gonna see the guy she loved come back from the dead," Richie retorted, "Big deal."
"Yeah, we know what you can do," Tori added, "You sit her down. You explain to her how it works."
"Yeah," Richie chimed in, "she already knows you're alive, Mac. You're halfway there."
"Yeah, what could be simpler?" Duncan asked.
"Mac, she's a doctor," Tori answered.
"Yeah," Richie added, "She deals with life and death and all that stuff all the time. Maybe it's not gonna be a big deal. At any rate, we have faith in you. You're good at these things. You'll work it out."
"Thanks for the support," Duncan replied, "and I'm glad you two are here with me."
"Tori encouraged me to do so," Richie stated, "but you should look on the bright side too. She already saw you die once. At least you're not going to have to kill yourself again in order to prove it."
"I'm so glad you guys came," Duncan replied.
"Thanks," Tori and Richie stated in unison. They arrived at the arrivals area, waiting for Anne.
"Waiting for your wife?" a man next to Duncan asked.
"Kind of," Duncan answered.
"Girlfriend?"
"It's complicated."
"What about these two?" the man asked, gesturing towards Tori and Richie.
"We're his family," Richie answered, "and his support system."
"That's nice to hear," the man replied before he informed them, "I'm waiting for my fiance."
"That's nice," Duncan replied as he was nervous and distracted.
"It would be nice," the man replied, "except she just spent the last seven hours sitting on a plane next to my ex wife. How'd you like to handle that?"
"It's a piece of cake," Duncan replied wishfully.
Suddenly, he saw Anne approaching the area with another woman in a gurney.
"That can't be good," Richie muttered.
"It's like I said," Duncan told the man, "Complicated."
Duncan ran to where the gurney was heading, "Anne? Anne?"
"Anne! Anne!" Richie and Tori called out in unison.

Anne looked on after she was able to get Tasha to the hospital after she collapsed to the floor back at the floor.
"Tasha, stay with me, okay?" Anne assured her, "You're in good hands here."
"Vitals?" the doctor asked.
"Oh. Pulse is barely palpable at sixty, B.P. ninety over fifty five," Anne informed the doctor, "She collapsed about twenty minutes ago from severe abdominal cramping, but I do not think it's appendix."
"You're a doctor?" he asked.
"Oh yeah. Sorry," Anne apologized before introducing herself, "Dr. Anne Lindsey."
She then stated regarding Tasha's situation, "I think it's some kind of intestinal blockage."
"Anything else?" the doctor asked.
"Yeah," Anne answered, "If you don't open her up right now, you're gonna lose her."
"Get her typed and cross matched and prepped for surgery," the doctor told his associate before telling Anne, "Thank you, Doctor. I'll take it from here."
"Oh, okay," Anne relented before telling the doctor, "Oh, her name is Tasha."
"Right," the doctor replied.
"Didn't know you practiced in France," a voice chimed in from behind.
Anne was looking at Tasha, "What could I do? One second she's beside me in line, next she's on the floor, swear to God, Duncan, I don't think they even stamped my passport..."
Then it hit her as she turned around to see Duncan, smiling gently at her. He was indeed alive, "Duncan?"
"That's me," Duncan replied before glancing at both Richie and Tori, "and there's Richie and Tori."
"Hi," Tori and Richie waved in unison.
"How have you been, Richie?" Anne asked.
"Better than I was," Richie answered, hugging Tori.
Anne went back to facing Duncan, "It is you."
She kissed him, "Oh my God, it's you!"
She hugged him, "You'd better have a good explanation for this."
"Let's go somewhere," Duncan told her, "It might take awhile."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"Lose her? How could you lose her?" Kristov demanded as he splattered paint onto a large sheet of canvas, confronting Alexei and Fryodor, "I asked you a question. How could you lose Tasha?"
"She fell at Customs," Alexei answered.
"So she's dead," Kristov inquired.
"They took her to the hospital," Alexei answered, "She couldn't still be alive."
Kristov turned away, "My dear Alexeievich...anything is possible."
He wiped a streak of red paint onto a corner of Alexei's mouth, "For instance, you don't know if she's dead."
He then wiped the second line on the opposite corner, "You don't know if she might talk to the police."
He then stepped back and slapped Alexei, "You know nothing! Go to the hospital. Make sure she can't talk."
With that, both Alexei and Fryodor both left.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Anne was looking at Duncan's Scottish Basket Hilt Claymore, "You fought the Battle of Culloden with this?"
She picked up the sword, "That was in...1746."
"I know it's hard to accept," Duncan told her, "I thought coming here might help."
"That was a gift from Bonnie Prince Charles," Duncan explained as Anne put the sword down and moved to his clan tartan, "Those were my colors. The colors of the Clan MacLeod."
Anne clasped her hand to her mouth, unable to believe what she was seeing, "I feel like I'm dreaming, but this explains a lot. I mean, not getting sick..."
"We get sick," Duncan spoke up, "We just heal."
"John Kirin...when he came back to life?"
"He's one of us," Duncan answered.
"And the man who killed you?"
"His name is Kalas. He's in prison. He won't be hurting us."
"It's like...it's like a fairy tale," Anne stated as she looked around the storage, seeing the stuff around her, "Swords and people living forever..."
"Not always," Duncan cut her off.
"That's right. The heads," Anne replied before asking, "Do you really have to do that?"
"I've seen this before...um, you know, people coming back to life on the...on the table," Anne explained, "but this...this is something else. It goes against everything I've ever learned, you know. It could be cell rejuvenation. Spontaneous. Of course, if we could sample your DNA, I could probably figure it out somehow..."
Duncan took her hand and pulled her to him, "Anne, just try to accept it."
Anne exhaled, "I am trying."
"Let's go," Duncan said before telling her, "Medically speaking, I'd say you just had a pretty traumatic half hour."
They turned to go, but there was something on Anne's mind.
"Mind taking a detour?" Anne asked, "I know she's not my patient, but I just feel..."
"Responsible, I know," Duncan replied.
"Yeah," Anne replied, "I'm sorry."
"I missed you," Duncan said.
With that, they headed out.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"There's no sign of infection," the doctor informed Anne, "She's young, strong...looks like she'll survive...this time."
"This time?" Anne asked.
"The obstruction was a balloon," the doctor answered, "filled with heroin. She's a drug courier."
"What room is she in?" Anne asked.
"Room four twelve," the doctor answered.
"Thank you," Anne replied before she turned around and faced Duncan.
"I'll wait for you," Duncan told her.
With that, Anne went into Tasha's room to talk to her.
"Hi, Tasha," she greeted her as she walked over to her bed side and sat next to her, "You were very lucky this time."
"Leave me alone," Tasha spoke up.
"Oh, you speak English," Anne replied, "Help me understand something. You seem like you have a lot going for you. Why on earth would you do something so incredibly stupid?"
"Go away," Tasha answered her.
"Do you know how much heroin was in that balloon," Anne asked, "and do you know what happens when they break or tear up inside of you?"
"You don't scare me," Tasha replied.
"Well, somebody should scare you," Anne stated, "I know what happens because I've seen it a lot. It is a very bad way to die. Whatever they're paying you, Tasha, it's not worth it."
"You think I'd do this for money?" Tasha asked.
Anne considered this, "Oh...you did this for a guy."
She took a deep breath and asked, "Will you think about it, Tasha?"
"I have," Tasha answered, "He loves me!"
"Good morning, Tasha," a man's voice greeted from behind.
Anne turned to see a man holding out a gun. She screamed as the man aimed his gun. Duncan rushed in and grabbed for the gun, "Duncan! Oh, Duncan! Somebody help!"
The man shot Duncan. Anne exclaimed, "Oh! Tasha, stay there. Stay there."
Then she called out, "Somebody help!"
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Anne ran to meet back with Duncan, "Oh, Duncan."
"Everyone okay?" Duncan asked.
"Yeah. We're fine," Anne answered, "How the hell'd you know about that nurse?"
"Oh, not often you see a nurse wearing three hundred dollar boots," Duncan answered as he winced in pain.
"You okay?"
"Yeah."
"You sure?"
"Just a bit of a headache," Duncan insisted, "You should've seen the other guy."
Anne noticed his shoulder wound, "Oh, Duncan. You're bleeding."
"It's all right, Anne," Duncan assured her.
"No, it's not," Anne objected.
"Anne, it doesn't matter," Duncan told her.
"Please," Anne insisted, "bullet wounds are my specialty."
"This isn't necessary," Duncan told her.
"Let me take a look, and don't move," Anne told him before she removed his coat, "I've treated hundreds of these. I know exactly what I'm doing."
She yanked open his buttoned shirt as Duncan sat passively, humoring her, "Your body's probably in shock..."
Anne looked to see the mostly healed bullet wound in his left shoulder.
"Told you," Duncan replied before he pulled his shirt back on and asked, "You okay?"
"Yeah," Anne answered, "I think I ruined your shirt."
"It's all right," Duncan replied, "Already had a hole in it."
He put his jacket back on, "Come on. We better get home. I think you've had enough surprises for today."
"Okay," Anne relented.
Duncan led her out, "You all right?"
"I'm fine," Anne answered.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Tori was snuggling with Richie in bed.
"Having a good morning?" she asked.
"Yeah," he answered, "thanks to you, we get to stay here in Paris and don't have to worry about leaving the country because people think I'm dead."
Tori snuggled her head to Richie's chest, "Yeah. I'm sorry you had to be pulled out of the racing for the foreseeable future."
"It's okay," Richie replied, "I'll be fine with it as long as I have you by my side."
"Aww, you're so sweet," Tori cooed before they shared a kiss. He kissed her face before she kissed him as well, then they kissed on the lips.
After the kissing session, they eyed each other while still snuggling.
"I wonder how Anne is handling the immortal business," Tori spoke up.
"I'm not sure," Richie replied, "She's probably in shock realizing Duncan MacLeod is immortal. Does she know that we are immortal as well?"
"I'm not sure to be honest," Tori shook her head, "but if she does, she does."
"Good point," Richie replied, "I'm so lucky to have a girlfriend who is beautiful and smart."
"Oh, Richie," Tori smiled before they shared another kiss.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Anne was walking off the area with Duncan after talking to the Inspector, "What do you think I should do?"
"What do you want to do?" Duncan asked.
"I want to go back home with you," Anne answered, "Oh, Duncan. I did not come to Paris to get involved with the Russian Mafia."
"Then let's go."
"Okay," Anne stated, "Of course, if I do convince her to testify, she could possibly put that guy away. Keep a little heroin off the streets."
"Maybe," Duncan replied, "it's your call. I'll wait for you outside."
Anne walked over to Tasha's room and proceeded to talk to her about the situation.
"What to do," Tasha spoke up, "If I talk, they'll kill me."
"No, they'll protect you," Anne replied, "but if you don't talk, you're going to go to prison, and how long do you think you're going to last there?"
"I don't know!" Tasha answered before saying, "When you love somebody, it's not so easy to leave. I want it to be like before. Before I knew what he did."
"Yeah," Anne replied to herself before she told Tasha, "It doesn't work that way, does it, Tasha? We can't go back. We have to go forward."
"I'm frightened," Tasha said.
"Yeah?" Anne replied, "It's okay to be frightened."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan left the hospital and sensed the Buzz. He saw Kristov, and remembered encountering Kristov at the Russian Steppes in 1750.
"Kristov," Duncan stated as he saw the enemy, "So you're part of this Russian cartel."
"Actually, I'd rather be an artist," Kristov answered, "but you know how fickle the public is."
He stepped towards the hospital entrance, but Duncan blocked him, "I'm not here for you."
"Tasha's not taking any visitors," Duncan declared.
"Duncan," Anne called out as she got out of the hospital.
"What an enchanting woman," Kristov stated before asking, "She belongs to you?"
"You keep her out of this," Duncan told him.
"Fine," Kristov replied, "You stay away from mine and I'll stay away from yours."
With that, he left the area.
"Duncan, who was that?" Anne asked.
"That was Kristov," Duncan answered.
"Do you think she'll be safe if she talks?" Anne asked as she walked with Duncan toward the parking lot.
"Maybe she'll walk if they nail her boss," Duncan answered.
"Ah, then maybe she should testify, don't you think?" Anne suggested.
"This is a mistake."
"Wait," Anne stated, "you just said they might let her walk."
"Not her, you," Duncan replied, "Coming here, being with me. It's wrong."
"Duncan, I don't understand."
"We're getting your stuff," Duncan told her, "and you're going home."
"I don't think so," Anne objected.
"Anne, that man back there was Kristov," Duncan stressed, "He's part of the Russian mob."
"So call the police," Anne replied.
"They can't do anything to him," Duncan told her, "I have no proof."
"Duncan, I do not understand what this has to do with me staying here," Anne replied.
"Because he knows who you are," Duncan told her, "He's a killer. He'll kill you, her, whoever gets in his way."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"How's the lovely couple?" Duncan asked as he eyed Tori and Richie. Richie grasped his girlfriend's hand as he eyed her, Duncan and Anne.
"We're doing better," Tori answered, "We came to an understanding regarding the investigation of the corruption in the racing team."
"I got a little excited as I always wanted to be a part of the race track team," Richie stated, "and I got carried away."
"Are they..." Anne started to ask.
"They're immortals too," Duncan answered, "but they're Intergalatic Union Agency Agents as well."
"Like spies?" Anne asked.
"Essentially," Duncan answered.
"We'll be going on a date," Richie informed his mentor, "Anything we can do for you?"
"There is," Duncan answered.
"What would that be?" Tori asked.
"Take Anne to the airport," Duncan answered, "and make sure she heads back home."
"Uh, we're still discussing this," Anne objected.
"No, we're not," Duncan replied, "you're leaving."
"Duncan, um, when did you start making my decisions for me?" Anne asked, annoyed.
"This isn't about that," Duncan stressed, "This is about life and death."
"Yeah," Anne replied, "Something that I deal with every day, in case you've forgotten."
"No, you deal with saving lives," Duncan argued, "Kristov takes them."
"Oh, fine," Anne asked, "So it's "Hi, Duncan. Bye, Duncan." Then you stick me on a bus and I get out of town?"
"If you want to live, you do," Duncan insisted.
"Duncan, you're not scaring me," Anne replied, "Okay. If it was me going through this, would you leave? No. So what makes you think that I will?"
"Because you have to," Duncan told her before he left her at the barge. Richie and Tori looked at her, and assured Anne it'd be okay.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Anne held out a coat for Duncan, "I... I thought you might want this. I know you don't uh, catch colds or anything, but...Just put it on. It'll make me feel better."
Duncan took the coat and put it on, "I can catch cold. I just can't die from it."
"Oh."
Duncan took her hand, "Come here."
"Richie and Tori just, uh," Anne told him, "told me about Tessa. How she died."
"Now you know," Duncan replied as he held her.
"Duncan, I... I do understand your need to protect me," Anne said, "and I guess it's partly because of her."
"Partly yes," Duncan replied, "but this whole thing is wrong."
"Duncan, I've seen death," Anne assured him, "and I'm not afraid of it. Whatever happens, I want us to be together."
"Your whole life will never be the same," Duncan told her.
"My whole life has not been the same since the day I met you," Anne interjected, "I've tried it with you, I've tried it without you, and... And I'll take it with you any day."
"Then stay close to me," Duncan replied, "You keep me between you and Kristov."
"It's a deal. How close?" Anne asked before she she snuggled against him, "Is this close enough?"
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"So what you're saying is they'll offer me a new life somewhere?" Tasha asked.
"If you tell all you know about Kristov to the police, you're free," Duncan answered, "They've agreed."
"Then you'll have your life back, Tasha," Anne added.
"I don't know," Tasha replied, "If I don't talk, maybe he'll leave me alone."
"He's already tried killing you once," Duncan insisted, "Stop protecting him and start protecting yourself."
"Whether I'm free or in prison," Tasha stated, "I'm still dead."
"I'll take care of Kristov," Duncan replied, "Just tell me where he is."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Tori smiled as she walked down the street holding Richie's hand. She felt lucky to have a wonderful boyfriend like Richie. Words couldn't describe how much she loved this guy.
She looked over as a taxi slowed to a stop next to them. They turned startled, expecting anything. Tori looked on in shock when one of the men immediately knocked Richie out with the butt of a gun.
"Richie!" Tori exclaimed in shock. The other man tried to grab her, but she managed to defend herself and knocked the man down. She saw the first man stuffing Richie into the trunk, "Leave him alone!"
Tori lunged for the first man and tried to fight him to save her boyfriend, which proved to be futile as she was knocked out as well.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"Duncan, come on," Anne stated as she and Duncan entered the barge, "Just... Why don't we call the police?"
"Anne, they won't be able to protect her from him," Duncan replied.
"Well, there's got to be another way," Anne stated.
"There isn't," Duncan replied before he heard the beeping on his laptop, "The laptop Tori gave me as a present."
He answered the laptop, "MacLeod."
Kristov appeared on the screen, "Oh, MacLeod, you disappoint me. I thought we had a bargain."
"That wasn't a bargain, Kristov," Duncan replied, "that was a threat. Maybe you don't know the difference."
"I know you helped Tasha make a deal with the police," Kristov said, "So I have another deal to propose. Stop Tasha from testifying."
"And how would you like me to do that?" Duncan asked.
"Kill her," Kristov answered, "It shouldn't be too hard."
"And if I don't?"
"Because if you don't," Kristov declared, "I'll take your friends' heads, but the debate is which one."
Duncan looked on in shock to see both Richie and Tori tied up and gagged. Then Kristov appeared on screen when he gotten a few seconds to see his friends, "Imagine my surprise when they both turned out to be one of us."
He was painting red dotted lines on the necks of first Richie and then Tori, "An unexpected bonus, wouldn't you say?"
"You leave them out of this," Duncan stated, "You leave Tasha out of this. Just you and me, Kristov."
"MacLeod, this isn't personal," Kristov insisted, "This is business. Now, do we have a deal, or do I cut on the dotted line?"
Duncan remained silent.
"I thought so," Kristov replied, "Goodbye, MacLeod."
The call ended.
"He's got Richie and Tori," Duncan told Anne, "He wants me to kill Tasha."
"Oh my God," Anne replied, "Duncan, we have to stop her from testifying. Well, come on. There's no other choice."
"There's one," Duncan instructed, "Go to the police, get Tasha's testimony. Stay with her at the hospital. It'll be safer there."
"Duncan, he'll kill Richie or Tori...or both!" Anne exclaimed.
"Not if I get there fast enough," Duncan replied.
"And if you don't?" Anne asked.
"Then I don't," Duncan replied before he left, leaving Anne scoffing in annoyance.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Richie looked on as he noticed Tori removing her own gag. Her gag was different from his, something he noticed as Kristov eyed him, "Losing your head to your own sword. I kind of like that."
He cut off Richie's gag with a utility knife. Richie spit after the gag was removed.
"You son of a bitch," Richie stated.
"Don't worry," Kristov assured him, "MacLeod will do whatever he has to, to protect his little friend..."
He then eyed Tori, who looked on in fear, "As well as his girlfriend."
"Yeah, you let us loose," Richie stated, "We'll see who needs protecting."
Kristov grabbed Richie's hair, "Spirit. Sometimes, I like that."
He then punched Richie, "Sometimes not."
"Richie!" Tori exclaimed in shock.
Kristov studied one of his paintings, "It needs something, don't you think?"
"Why don't you go to hell?" Richie shouted. He glanced at Tori as she was taking some deep breaths, trying to keep calm.
Suddenly, Kristov, Tori and Richie all sensed the Buzz. Kristov muttered something under his breath before he picked up his sword, "Party's over for you, boy, and I'll start with your girl."
Tori yelped as Kristov held her.
"For you too, pal," Richie stated, "Leave Tori alone. It's me you want, right? You take our Quickenings, and they knock your skinny little ass, MacLeod's gonna be right there to help you up. She dies, and possibly me, you go right behind us."
"Fryodor!" Kristov shouted as he jogged out of the room, "Come with me! We're clearing out now!"
Richie looked at Tori, "Are you okay?"
"I think so," Tori nodded, struggling with her ropes, "That guy's insane."
"Hang on," Richie told her as he saw the utility knife on the table, and started to scoot his chair towards it, "I'll get us out of here."
He grabbed the utility knife, and cut himself free. Then he hurried to cut Tori free, "See? What did I tell you?"
"Yeah," Tori replied, grasping her wrists, "Thanks."
"Let's get out of here," Richie grabbed his sword.
"What about Kristov?" Tori asked as she grabbed her sword.
"He threatened you," Richie answered as they left the ballroom, "I'm not going to take that lightly."
He hurried outside Kristov's house. They looked on as Kristov had arrived, leaving the house.
"I'll kill the both of you in a second, boy," Kristov told Richie, "Leave while you still got your head."
"Are you sure about this, Richie?" Tori asked.
"As I'll ever be," Richie answered, "If he kills me, you can get your chance to avenge me, then MacLeod will get to avenge us both."
"I get the idea," Tori replied, "Good luck."
"You'll need the luck, boy," Kristov stated.
"There's only one thing I hate more than being called a boy," Richie stated, "and that's your stupid paintings."
Both Richie and Kristov raised their swords.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Tori looked on, nearly mesmerized as Richie dueled with Kristov.
The two immortals dueled as they were in circles, and eventually, Kristov forced Richie on his knees while he was defending himself from his attacks. Richie cried out as he took Kristov's head.
Tori sighed with relief as her boyfriend was the victor.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan sneaked in behind the second thug outside Kristov's house, and choked him into unconsciousness. He was determined to rescue Richie and Tori.
Duncan then made his way up the stairs and ducked for cover when someone shot at him. Duncan ran around as the thugs were trying to shoot him.
One of the thugs were stalking Duncan, but he knocked over a painting, leaning against the wall to draw the attention of another thug, and got him out of the way.
Now, Duncan was stalking the thug. He grabbed the other thug and took him out. The thug he was stalking shot at him, but hit his partner instead.
After a brief scuffle, Duncan took out his targeted thug as well.
Duncan entered the ballroom. Kristov was nowhere to be found, neither was Tori or Richie. He hurried down the hallway to find his friends. He heard Richie cry out before seeing flashes of lighting outside. Duncan assumed the worst, that Richie was dead, and Tori would possibly take Kristov's head next.
"Richie," Duncan muttered as the Quickening ended, "Tori."
Duncan drawn his sword, preparing himself for anything, or possibly facing Kristov in the wake of his friends' deaths. They looked to see a figure kneeling on the stone, and a second figure helping him up.
To Duncan's relief, it was Richie and Tori. Tori helped up Richie, who was exhausted and giving a weak smile, and Tori smiled as well.
"I won," Richie announced.
"I could tell," Duncan replied.
