Defenders Chronicles: Highlander

Chapter Eighteen: Richie

Richie was riding his motorcycle in the foggy night. He noticed a beautiful blonde woman jumping in front of him, flagging him down.

"You got a death wish?" Richie asked.

"I'm sorry," the girl apologized, "Please help me."

"What is it? What is it?" Richie asked, "What's wrong?"

"He's after me!" the girl cried out as a mysterious man jogged towards them, "Please help me! There's no time!"

Richie sensed the man as an Immortal through the Buzz. He was Immortal. The man turned corner and ran down the street towards them.

"Get on!" Richie replied. The woman complied and they drove off, making their way to the dojo.

"Shouldn't you get to a hospital?" Richie asked.

"No," the young lady answered, "no hospital."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, please."

"Fine."

Richie continued making his way to the dojo.

"My name is Laura, Laura Daniels."

"My name's Richie."

"Nice to meet you."

Duncan was reading and he sensed the Buzz, as did Tori as she walked into the room. Richie arrived in the loft with an injured woman in tow.

"We need your help, Mac," Richie told his teacher, "She had an accident."

"That doesn't look good," Tori quipped.

"Why didn't you take her to the hospital?" Duncan asked.

"No, no hospital," the woman insisted, "no doctor."

"I tried," Richie answered, "She didn't want to go."

"Get her to the couch," Duncan instructed.

"Okay," Richie replied before getting the young lady to the couch, "It's gonna be all right. You okay? Here you go, Laura. Have a seat."

He turned to Duncan, "Mac, she was being chased by one of us."

"An Immortal?" Tori asked. Richie nodded.

"A couple of cloths and some water," Duncan instructed, and Richie went to get the items. He approached the young lady, and Tori followed suit.

"Hi," Duncan greeted her, "Just lay back a little bit."

She did as instructed.

"That's it," Duncan replied, "Let's have a look here."

He noticed the cut on her head, "Nay, it's okay. Cut's only superficial. Your pupils are okay. It's too early yet to see if you have a concussion."

Richie arrived with the cloth and water. Duncan took the cloth from Richie and started cleaning her wound before asking, "Is there any family or friends we can contact?"

"No, uh," the woman answered, "I'm sorry to bother you. I should probably get going."

"No, honey," Tori replied, "No, stay there. You'll be fine with us."

"She's right," Duncan added, "You just relax right there. You're not going anywhere. Just put this on your head."

He laid the fresh cloth on the woman's forehead, "and let's get you something to drink, all right? You take it easy."

Duncan got up from the woman, and Tori followed him.

"It's going to be okay," Richie assured the young lady before following Duncan and Tori to the kitchen area.

"What is that all about?" Tori asked, "Let us in on it, Richie."

"I was riding along," Richie explained, "and she appears out of nowhere in front of my bike. She says there's a guy chasing her. I look around, and there he is. I felt him coming a block away."

"Who is the girl anyway?" Tori asked.

"Laura Daniels," Richie answered.

"What did the guy look like?" Duncan asked.

"Mean looking sucker," Richie answered, "Big nasty scar down the side of his face. Made him look scary as hell."

He and Tori glanced at Duncan, who appeared to be surprised at the description of the guy.

"You know him?" Tori asked.

"His name's Mako," Duncan answered, "and yeah, I know him."

He explained to Richie and Tori about his time with Mako in 1880 when he was the sheriff in a Frontier town.

"Wait a second," Richie stated, "You're telling me this guy is a cop?"

"Ask yourself, Richie," Duncan answered, "Why didn't she want to go to the hospital, or the police?"

"I don't know," Richie replied.

"It does kind of make sense," Tori stated, "The girl's name is Laura? She said she needed help, and she was scared, she needed me to hide her out."

"If I were you," Duncan suggested, "the first thing I'd find out is what she's hiding from?"

"Richie," Laura called from the couch.

"Yeah," Richie replied before he and Tori walked over to where she was sitting, "Laura. Let me see."

He looked at her head wound, "Oh, it's getting better. You're going to be fine."

"Yeah," Laura replied, "thanks to you three."

"Do you know why that guy was chasing you?" Tori asked.

"No," Laura answered.

"Then you won't mind me bringing the police in, will you?" Duncan asked.

"No, please," Laura pleaded before she paused and said, "Well, maybe I do know."

She took a mug containing the water and explained her story, "You see, where I come from, there's still a right and wrong side of the tracks, and all we ever dreamed of was getting to the other side, so I married Earl Morrison. He's the son of the richest guy in town. I thought I was going to be Cinderella."

"What happened?" Richie asked.

"Well," Laura answered, "it didn't take him two weeks. He started drinking, and seeing other women, and when I'd say something, he'd slap me. Pretty soon, I didn't have to say anything. Just got to be out of habit. So I had to...I had to go."

"And that's why he sent that guy after you?" Tori asked.

"Why don't you go to the police, Laura?" Duncan asked.

"Well, my father in law, he owns half the town," Laura answered, "and he told this judge that I stole from him, and they charged him. They'd do anything to keep me there."

"You could get a lawyer," Duncan suggested.

"You don't know Earl's daddy," Laura stressed, "Half the people in town would lie for him. If I don't go back with Earl, they'll send me to jail for sure. Are you gonna turn me in?"

"Of course not," Richie answered, "We're going to help you, right Mac?"

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Richie was taking a shower. He was glad Mac was able to let Laura stay with him. He wanted to do what it took to protect Laura from this guy who wanted to take her back to her abusive husband.

He was pulled out of his thoughts when he sensed the Buzz. Suddenly, he pulled the shower curtain, revealing Mako, who punched him in the face.

"Now, don't do it, boy," Mako told him, "Let's try this again, a little friendlier."

"What do you want?" Richie asked.

"Where's the girl?" Mako demanded.

"I don't know," Richie lied. Mako pulled his hair, and pulled him close, "Now, you listen to me, boy. In case you don't know it, our kind don't necessarily have a liking for each other. Some of em even lose their heads over it. Now, you could do yourself a world of good if you start telling the truth."

"We talked for awhile," Richie answered, "and I let her off down by the bus station. That's all I know. Look, why don't you just let her go? You don't even know what this is all about?"

"I don't care about the hows and the whys, son," Mako replied, "I'm just bringing her back. Now you could have yourself a nice long life if you don't get in my way again."

With that, he left, leaving Richie leaning his head against the shower wall.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"I really wish you would consider this, Richie," Tori urged her friend, "At least take into consideration what Mac is telling you."

"I know what I'm doing, Tori," Richie replied. He had Laura to wait at the doorway for him while he talked to Tori.

"Well, Mako found you at your apartment and there's no telling what he'll do if he finds you again," Tori stated, "I have a bad feeling about this girl, Rich. She's hiding something from you, a deeper reason behind her running from Mako."

"Well, I can handle myself," Richie stated, "you know I can. You know Laura needs my help. She's a nice girl, and you're being cross with her."

Tori shrugged in response, "I am only cross with her because I know she's hiding something more than hiding from her abusive husband, and I wish you wouldn't be so trusting!"

"What?! Tori don't patronize me," Richie argued, "You're not my mother or my sister. You can't tell me I'm too trusting!"

"Well, it's true, and I just know she's hiding something," Tori retorted, "What if she was hiding something further, like the real reason why she's on the run?"

"We will cross that bridge when we come to it, Tori," Richie replied before stating, "I think that you are just jealous that Laura's with me!"

"What?!" Tori scoffed, "Now you're just being ridiculous!"

"Am I?"

"I can't stop you," Tori sighed, "but I can tell you to be careful."

"I will do that," Richie replied, "I'll be careful. I won't do anything stupid."

He kissed her cheek before leaving the dojo altogether with Laura in tow.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Tori was talking to her mother through her laptop about the situation with the Immortal Mako, and Richie's girlfriend Laura Daniels.

"It sounds like an interesting situation," Janet noted, "but I do believe that we have some details regarding Mrs. Daniels, and Mako."

"What do you have?" Tori asked.

"Laura is not of our concern other than her being a wanted criminal and everything," Janet answered, "and Mako is an Immortal bounty hunter, after wanted criminals."

"So, Laura is a wanted woman," Tori stated, "I knew she was hiding something."

"Laura Daniels is wanted for murder of her husband," Janet revealed, "there's nothing much we can do for her. As for Mako, he's on our most wanted list in regards of Immortals. He better hope the IUA doesn't take him into custody."

"Why would you want to take Mako into custody?" Tori asked, confused.

"Mako isn't exactly well received from what our files have of him," Janet answered, "The way he handled taking custody of his targets led to them being dead."

"Did they resist arrest," Tori asked, "or were on the run like Laura?"

Janet sighed, "Not exactly. Mako was a product of his time from what our files reveal, and at first, he's fine as it was in the 1800s, but during his last five times, his criminal targets ended up dead, over the span of ten years, and each time he claims it was an accident, but our sources show otherwise."

Tori gulped. She didn't like Laura that much, but she doesn't deserve to end up dead, but she feared it might end up that route.

"The only way he won't be in custody," Janet stated, "is if he loses his head, and that being by either Richard, or MacLeod."

Tori nodded, "It might come down to that."

"Tell Richie to be careful," Janet implored her daughter.

"Will do," Tori nodded.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"Mac, we need to borrow your car," Richie told Duncan as he arrived at the dojo with Laura in tow.

"Richie, slow down," Duncan said, "we have to talk."

"No, no, no, Mac," Richie insisted, "There's no time. He knows I'd come to you for help."

"Richie," Duncan spoke up, "she's not wanted for theft."

"She's wanted for murder," Tori spoke up as she arrived at the area, "She killed her husband. Somehow, the IUA has information on Mako and Laura. I assume they have information on the latter because of Mako being on the IUA's most wanted list in regards to Immortals."

"He's on the most wanted list on your agency?" Duncan asked. Tori nodded.

Richie looked over at Laura, "Laura, please talk to me. Is that true?"

"You just need to tell the truth," Tori added, "we'll figure something out. I'm not sure what though."

Laura finally explained the truth, "I did it. One night, Earl came home drunk. I was in the kitchen. He called me a lazy bitch and started hitting me. The next thing I knew, I had the carving knife, and then the next thing I knew, it was in him."

"So it was self defense?" Richie asked.

"Not in Earl's daddy's town, it wasn't!" Laura exclaimed.

"But you were protecting yourself, right?" Richie asked.

"Well," Laura answered, "my father in law told me that I would not live long enough to stand trial, so."

"Laura," Richie asked, "Laura, why didn't you tell me?"

"I wanted to," Laura answered, "I was afraid that you wouldn't help me. I know that it was wrong, but I'm really sorry."

She walked away. Tori sighed, "Mac?"

"Listen to me," Duncan told Richie, "I've spoken to a lawyer. We can fight the extradition, but she has to go back and face the charges."

"Why, Mac?" Richie asked.

"Because those are the rules," Duncan answered.

"Mac, the hell with the rules," Richie protested, "We're Immortals. Who cares about the rules?"

"Sometimes it's all we have."

"You sound like him." Richie stated before he walked away.

"Richie, where is this going from here?" Duncan hurried to him before he grabbed him by the arms, "What happens if you're out on the road and a cop recognizes her? What are you going to do, kill him? How far is this going to go?"

"I don't know!" Richie exclaimed.

"Maybe the IUA might be able to take Mako into custody if you are that concerned about Laura," Tori spoke up, "but with the right lawyers, we can give her a fighting chance if she were to stand trial."

Richie stressed, "She needs me!"

"We can't stop you," Tori stated.

"Richie," Laura said, looking out the window, "I just saw his car."

"Mac, please," Richie pleaded.

Duncan gave him the keys to the T bird, "Out the back."

"Thanks," Richie replied, taking the keys before leaving with Laura in tow, leaving Tori and Duncan by themselves in the empty dojo.

"Mako is wanted by your agency?" Duncan asked.

"Yeah," Tori answered, "they consider him too much a risk to be out in society. The only way he's not in IUA custody is if another Immortal takes his head."

"I was afraid of that," Duncan sighed. The two sensed the Buzz. Mako entered the dojo with two men.

"I warned you, MacLeod," Mako demanded, "Where are they?"

"Who are they," Tori asked, "your deputies?"

"The girl's a killer," Mako stated, "The boy's obstructing justice. I can't have you interfere again, MacLeod."

"Not even if you are into custody of the Intergalactic Union Agency?" Tori asked, getting out her tachi.

"Even so, girl," Mako replied.

"Relax," Duncan suggested, "why don't we just pick up the phone and call the police? How far can they get?"

"There'll be no police," Mako replied, "They're mine."

"I thought it was about the law," Duncan glanced at him.

"I am the law," Mako declared.

"No, you're not, Mako," Duncan replied, "You may come here under the color of authority, but you're placing yourself above the law. Nobody's above the law, not even you."

Duncan fought off the two mortal men while Mako managed to take off.

"Tori, go find Richie!" Duncan told her.

Tori didn't need to be told twice. She sprinted off out of the dojo to go look for Richie and Laura as Mako was after them as well.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Richie was running down the streets, holding Laura's hand. They had to escape Mako somehow, but Richie knew this was getting pointless. He suddenly stopped, not knowing what he could do at this point.

"Richie, what are you doing?" Laura asked.

"He's here," Richie answered.

"Where?" Laura looked around, "I don't see him."

"He's close."

"Let's go," Laura tried to pull him.

"No," Richie remained where he stood.

"Richie," Laura protested, "but he'll catch us!"

"If not here," Richie interjected, "somewhere else."

"We can't stay!" Laura exclaimed.

"Laura, we can't run," Richie told her. Before he could do anything else, or do anything, Laura fell backwards, and she ended up getting hit by Mako's car.

"Laura, no!" Richie screamed in anguish. He knelt over to Laura's lifeless body, "No! No, please."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Tori made a dash to the area, and to her horror she saw Richie crying over Laura's lifeless body. She looked to see Mako had ran her over. He had killed her. As much as she didn't like Laura, she didn't deserve what happened to her, and this made a sixth causality at the hands of Mako, something her mother informed her. She glanced over to see Mako walking over to where Richie was as people were clamoring in worry.

"It wasn't supposed to end like this," Mako told Richie, "All she had to do was give herself up."

Tori felt herself fuming. This man might have been a champion of the law, but he was still Immortal. All bets were off now. She hoped Richie took his head as she saw him talk more, "All right, boy, come on it's over."

Richie rose up, "You son of a bitch!"

He ran at Mako, and shoved him through the window of an empty building. Tori walked over to Laura's lifeless body. Duncan arrived moments later.

"Mako killed her," Tori looked at the Highlander, "He did it on purpose."

Duncan only looked at her before they hurried to look for Richie.

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

Richie was sword fighting with Mako. He couldn't protect Laura from him, but he sure as hell was going to avenge her by taking this monster's head. He made sure to fight the best that he could.

The two ended up at an isolated room with unopened paint cans and plastic around the walls.

"Richie, be careful!" Tori exclaimed upon finally finding him. She sighed as Richie and Mako continued to duel, "Oh man."

"Richie, back off!" Duncan shouted upon finding the group moments later.

"No, Mac," Richie replied, "He killed her."

"It was an accident," Mako stated as he stood on top of a table, "I was just doing my job."

"Bull," Tori retorted, "If you were really doing your job, you wouldn't have killed Laura the way you did, and allowed the authorities to deal with her. No wonder the IUA is after you."

"It doesn't have to go any further, Richie," Duncan insisted, "Leave it alone."

"Mac," Richie replied, "it's already gone too far."

"He's right," Tori nodded.

Richie swung at Mako, who sliced him across the chest. Richie swung at him again. Mako jumped to avoid the blow, and broke through the top of the table upon landing, becoming trapped.

"Remember, MacLeod," Mako told the Highlander, "all that separates us from the beasts is the law."

He lunged forward with his blade, stabbing at Richie, but Richie swung a final time and beheaded Mako. Duncan looked disappointed while Tori stood there stoic. Richie turned and faced them.

"Mac," Richie called to his teacher, dropping to his knees. Duncan turned around and walked away. Tori remained in position.

Richie felt wind gusting around him. He felt energy go inside him, and he knew this was Mako's Quickening he was taking, "Tori, you might want to stay back."

Tori complied as she backed to a corner of the plastic covered wall.

Then, Richie rose up and left lighting hit his body. He screamed as he took his first Quickening.

Tori watched as different paint cans burst open, revealing different colors splatting different parts of the room.

Richie dropped to his knees and dropped backwards, still on his knees, after the Quickening ended. Tori walked over to him.

"Are you okay?" Tori asked.

"I took his Quickening," Richie answered as he started to rise back up.

"Yeah," Tori nodded, "you did."

She touched his shoulders and soothed him gently.

"What about Mac?" Richie asked.

"I'll go talk to him," Tori answered, "but I can't promise anything."

-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-

"What did you think was going to happen, Mac?!" Tori demanded, pacing the room.

"You know very well this wasn't the right way!" Duncan exclaimed.

"Oh my God!" Tori exclaimed, "The way I saw it, they were both in the wrong in a way."

"How was Mako in the wrong?"

"First off, he killed Laura, and she didn't deserve that," Tori explained, "and didn't he declare that he was above the law?! That warrants at least more than one way Mako was in the wrong. Oh, and Laura wasn't the first person to be killed by Mako."

Duncan nodded. He hated that she was right.

"Look," Tori spoke a little more calmer, "I know Mako was a product of his time, and he was a champion of the law, and everything, even my mom said it was fine with your friends death in the 1800s, but I think it was better that Richie took his head rather than the IUA taking him into custody because he's one of the most wanted bounty hunters, while yeah, Laura was a wanted murderer too. What do you think?"

"All right! All right! Fine! Fine. You're right," Duncan nodded, "I don't agree with either option regarding Mako, but Richie still has to go out on his own."

"I gathered that," Tori nodded.

"And I want you to look after him," Duncan advised, "Richie will need someone, a companion, and I believe you are the best choice for that."

"I'll take my mom's offer in that case," Tori nodded, "and maybe Richie can visit the Defenders as well."

Moments later, Richie arrived at the loft.

"It's getting pretty cold," Richie said as he exited the elevator, "It's probably going to snow soon."

"You have to leave," Duncan told his friend.

"It's that time?" Richie asked. He nodded.

"Was I wrong about Mako?" Richie asked.

"It's done," Duncan answered.

"I just never figured it like this," Richie lamented, "I was gonna have friends, get a job, meet a girl...It's all backwards now."

"You'll have a job soon," Tori assured him, "I'll see to that, and you will still have friends."

"You're coming with me?" Richie asked, slightly hopeful.

"Of course," Tori nodded.

"And you might still have a girl," Duncan glanced at Richie, and then at Tori, "you just don't know it yet."

"Good implication there," Tori quipped.

"Some things will never change," Duncan told Richie, "Some things will. You'll learn to live with them."

He paused before continuing, "I still believe in you, Richie. I still believe you have potential. Right now, you have to go out on your own. I know you will do your best."

"You just shouldn't be acting hot headed like you were," Tori stated, "maybe I might be able to help."

"So, I guess we'll see you around?" Richie asked.

"Yeah," Duncan answered, "take care of yourselves."

"We'll see you around," Tori replied before making her way to the elevator. Richie followed him, before he looked at Duncan and asked, "Mac, are we ever going to face each other?"

"Maybe," Duncan answered.

Richie nodded before he joined Tori in the elevator and left the loft.

Duncan sighed sadly. Richie was like a son to him, and he hated to see him go, but he knew this would happen sooner or later. Hopefully, Tori would help him steer down the right path, and Richie wouldn't be acting on his emotions when he saw him again, when he saw them both again.
