Chapter Thirty-Nine: Astral Richie
"Richie, I really wish you would consider this."
Richie and Tori were seated on the couch, once again discussing the issues with Richie and his racing situation. Duncan was out on his barge, talking to Maurice, leaving the couple to sort out the issue the best of their ability.
"Well, I won't!" Richie exclaimed, "You know I've been waiting a damn good long time to be a part of the racing team, and this is what I've been waiting for."
He sighed roughly, and wished MacLeod would come over here at any time so he wouldn't have to listen to a lecture from his girlfriend telling him the racing was too dangerous, especially with a prick namely Basil trying to rile him up the way he did.
"Come on, Rich," Tori replied, "I just have a bad feeling about this. What if something goes wrong during the races? If you end up dying, it's going to be a crazy side show. The media and authorities will know that you're dead, and for at least a generation, you'll have to leave Paris, let alone Europe."
She sighed before insisting, "At least try to reconsider. My intuition is usually right, nine times out of ten."
"Then it's the one time you are wrong!" Richie exclaimed.
"Give me a break, Richie," Tori retorted, "I wish you wouldn't be so stubborn!"
"Don't be patronizing, Tori," Richie snapped, "you're not my mother or sister! You saw how much of a bastard Basil was at the tracks. He set me up to lose, and now it's my turn to beat him."
He then muttered, "Grown up game, my ass."
Tori chuckled upon hearing that line, "You're right there. Basil is arrogant."
She then took a deep breath, "I can't stop you because like you said, you're capable of making your own choices."
"Yeah," Richie nodded, "Definitely."
"I'm just trying my best to look out for you," Tori insisted, "and your well being."
"Listen, Tor, I appreciate you looking after me but I'm a big boy. I can deal." Richie replied.
"Just be careful," Tori insisted.
"I'll try not to do anything stupid," Richie replied.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Tori looked at her computer, as well as the mecha behind her. The invention was just about completed. She knew Richie was too determined to win the first place in the races, and her mother insisted this was part of the investigation. This was her guarantee that Richie didn't have to leave Paris, or Europe for that matter.
As a matter of fact, she had been working on this invention for a couple of weeks now. In spite of moving from Seacouver to Paris for the third year in a row, she managed to get her invention settled.
Tori took a deep breath, eyeing the final touches of her invention, "Wonderful. Funny how determination to save my boyfriend will give me such hard work. It's almost ready."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Tori looked on as Richie was taking part of the trials, leading up to the big race. She took a deep breath, watching the races.
She observed how both Basil and Richie were neck and neck in the races.
"You worry about him getting hurt?" Maurice asked, pulling Tori from her thoughts.
"I worry," Duncan answered.
"So do I," Tori added, "given what I found out the other day, and how reckless Richie can be at times."
"What do you mean by what you found?" Maurice asked.
"We'll explain at the barge," Duncan answered.
The three continued to watch the races.
"Young men," Maurice stated, "They all think they're going to live forever."
Tori looked on as the race continued. Basil was serving, trying to make Richie lose control of his bike. They were jockeying for the first position. Richie took a turn so close to his knee pad, and scrapes the pavements, sending out spots.
"And on the last turn," the man on the P.A. Announced, "Saracen, one and two. It's the first times trials for today. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen."
Tori cheered Richie on before she, Duncan and Maurice walked over to Richie's bike, where he was at.
"Ridden like a champion!" Maurice exclaimed happily.
"Thanks, Maurice," Richie replied as he shook Maurice's hand, "Looks like I might get another run before dark."
"I don't think Maurice's heart could take it," Duncan chimed in.
"My heart's as young as yours," Maurice told Richie, "but I have to be at work. Good luck, Richie, and be careful."
"Thanks, Maurice."
"Hey, wait!" Tori called out. Maurice turned around.
"There's something at my place I wanted to show you guys," Tori stated.
"Why don't you show me after I get off work?" Maurice suggested.
"Doesn't sound like a bad idea," Tori replied.
"Excellent," Maurice replied before he left, "See you guys then!"
"Looks like you took that last bend pretty tight," Duncan told Richie.
"Yeah, you're telling me," Richie replied, "That's the second time Basil tried to run me off the track. He's uh, a little pissed cause I beat him yesterday."
"That is far from doing it justice," Tori quipped.
"How bad is it?" Duncan asked, referring to Richie's knee.
"Oh, it's nothing," Richie answered, "It's healed already. It's just took a little skin off."
"It skinned you a bit, didn't it?" Tori asked.
They both noticed Duncan giving Richie a look.
"What?" Richie replied.
Duncan sighed, "Don't you think you're riding it a little close to the edge?"
"Exactly what I was thinking!" Tori exclaimed.
"I'm riding to win," Richie replied, "like everybody else."
"Do you think anybody else could break his leg in three places and still walk away?" Duncan asked.
"Do you think I'm cheating," Richie interjected.
"Well, you tell me," Duncan replied, "Would you be pushing this hard if you thought you could get hurt?"
Richie glared at him, "I gotta get cleaned up."
He left, leaving Tori and Duncan.
"I was showing concerns before you spoke of them," Tori told him.
"I know," Duncan replied, "your mother is really..."
"I know she is!" Tori exclaimed, "Still, we shouldn't be pushing things, like Richie is."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Tori sighed, "I'm sorry, Richie."
"For what?" Richie asked.
"Getting on your case over the racing," Tori answered, "I know how much this means to you. I show concern for you because the situation that's at hand. You know, Basil."
She hugged Richie, "However, I'm not the one who's willing to take any chances here."
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"As soon as MacLeod and Maurice come over," Tori answered, "you're going to see an interesting new invention I came up with, which I started before we moved to Paris."
"I wonder what it could be," Richie quipped.
Suddenly, they heard a knock on the door, along with Richie and Tori sensing the Buzz.
Cautiously, Richie answered the door and Tori was right behind him. It was Duncan and Maurice.
"It seems that someone told Maurice about a new invention of yours," Duncan spoke up.
"That I did," Tori replied, "Let's head over to the back and I'll show it to you."
She led the group into the guest room, where her tablet was next to her laptop. Then there was a visor and something as tall as Duncan covered under a white sheet.
"What's all this?" Duncan asked.
"All this is my new invention," Tori answered, "I ended up getting approval from Mom after I told her everything. She thinks it'll be a good way to cover Richie's tracks in case something goes wrong."
"What does it do?" Maurice asked.
"I'll need Duncan to volunteer to show you," Tori answered.
"Me?" Duncan quipped, "I'm not the one racing here."
"Trust me on this," Tori insisted. Duncan sighed before relenting. He sat down at a chair nearby. Tori placed the visor on Duncan's wrist, "Now observe."
Tori walked over and removed the sheets, revealing a robot, which turned into Duncan.
"I'm Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod," the robot stated in Duncan's voice, "There can be only one."
"What does he mean by that?" Maurice asked, confused.
"Maybe you pulled this off a little too well," Duncan stated, trying to keep Maurice from knowing the truth.
"Maybe you should try someone who is racing," Duncan suggested as he removed the visor from his wrist. The robot returned to its normal state seconds later.
"That sounds like a good idea," Richie replied, holding the visor.
"Take a seat," Tori told her boyfriend. Duncan stood up and Richie took the seat before placing the visor on his wrist. Then the robot changed to where it looked like Richie.
"My name is Richie Ryan," the robot stated, "I am going to beat Basil and win first prize."
"That is magnificent!" Maurice exclaimed happily, "It looks like the real deal."
"That is does," Richie replied, smiling proudly.
"Here's the catch," Tori explained, "if you happen to have died in the races...you would more than likely be out cold, in a coma for a few hours, give or take."
"So you don't die for real in that case?" Maurice asked.
"Essentially."
"I guess that settles that," Duncan replied, crossing his arms.
"So, what were you talking about earlier?" Maurice asked.
Tori explained the investigation of the alien drugs Basil had illegally bought, and how Philippe overdosed and died from his accident.
"That is awful!" Maurice exclaimed, "These guys are truly throwing their lives away."
He looked at Richie, "Are you on those drugs?"
"No," Richie shook his head, "Basil tried to offer me one, but I refused."
"Yeah, he's not on the drugs," Duncan added, "but he is acting stubborn and reckless."
"Ah! Good that he's not on drugs," Maurice stated before he told Richie, "Still, you should be careful."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"I don't know if you are aware of this," Jack spoke up while talking to Tori on the laptop, "but there's another immortal here."
"Is he good or bad?" Tori asked.
"She," Jack corrected her, "and her name is Ceirdwyn. She wants justice for her lover's death from what the files explain."
"Do you need us to stop her?" Tori asked.
"That won't be necessary," Jack insisted, "Besides, I believe MacLeod's getting her under control, or doing something reasonable when it comes to Ceirdwyn."
"I hope so," Tori replied.
"Oh," Jack informed her, "your mother, myself and a few other agents will be watching the races as well, just so you know."
"Mom will be covering up Richie's tracks," Tori stated.
"In a nutshell," Jack replied before telling her, "Tell Richie I said good luck."
"Will do."
With that, the call ended.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"So, what are you going to do?" Richie asked as he and Duncan were at the trailer, and Richie prepared himself for the races.
"I don't know," Duncan answered as Ceirdwyn was on his mind along with Paolo.
"Well, Mac," Richie insisted, "the only way to stop her, is to fight her."
"Could I kill her?" Duncan asked before he stood up, "I'm going to see if Paolo's working the crowds."
"Mac, are you looking for a way to stop her?" Richie asked, "Or a reason not to?"
"Either one works for me," Duncan answered before advising, "Tori will be here any minute. You be careful."
"Sure," Richie replied before Duncan left.
A few minutes later, a knock on the door was heard. Richie answered it and it was Tori.
"Are you ready?" Tori asked.
"As I'll ever be," Richie answered, "You sure about this?"
"As I'll ever be," Tori repeated the answer. She placed the visor on Richie's wrist and the robot was now looking like Richie, attire and all.
"I hope this works," Richie declared.
"Me too," Tori nodded.
"I'll take you to the barge while the fake Richie takes your place," Tori said.
"All right," Richie begrudgingly agreed.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan walked on, making his way to the tracks. He was able to help Ceirdwyn stop her revenge plans to avenge her lover, Steven's death. He even recalling the time he met her in 1746. He hoped Ceirdwyn would find peace and let Steven rest in peace.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Tori looked on with Duncan and Maurice next to her while watching "Richie" on the tracks. Not too far from them was her mother, Jack, and a few other agents. She saw that Richie and Basil were jockeying for first position as usual.
"Yep," Tori muttered, "the robot behaves just like Richie."
"Go! Go! Bring it in!" Maurice cheered.
"Yeah," Tori chimed in, "you can do it, Richie!"
"Yellow caution flag on the course," the man on the P.A. announced, "Yellow flag on the course."
"I don't like this," Tori stated.
She looked on as "Richie" and Basil tumbled to a halt as the bikes exploded into flames. Tori joined Duncan and the rest of the crowd as they jumped over the fence and ran towards the wreck.
"Please stay off the course, ladies and gentlemen," the man on the PA called out, "Please stay off the course."
Tori looked on as an ambulance had arrived and rushed to the scene. Personnel worked to put out the flames around Basil, followed by them performing CPR. Tori looked to see "Richie" was nowhere to be found, like the robot vanished just as the accident happened.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"No questions, I'm afraid," Janet informed the reporters and authorities while Duncan, Tori, and Maurice were watching on TV, "We found something unusual while investigating corruption in the Saracen team. By corruption, I meant the illegal foreign type. The now deceased Basil was responsible for the drugs being distributed here. As far as Richard Ryan is concerned, I think it's safe to say, he won't be returning to the races for the foreseeable future, given the circumstances and the fact that this investigation is now closed."
Duncan turned off the TV after that and sighed before going for the wood.
"Richie is going to be heartbroken over that," Tori quipped.
"He'll get over it," Duncan replied as he was adding more wood to the fireplace.
"I know."
"And to imagine if that was the real Richie who died with that other guy," Maurice stated, "I keep thinking of the things he'd miss out on given he's still young. Marriage, Children. It is always sad when someone dies so young. My first wife was a religious woman. To her, those who had died were never far away. I hope it's true."
"Truer than you think," Duncan stated, thinking about Tessa, Darius and Fitz.
"Richie is still alive, which is the important part here," Tori stated.
"Very true," Maurice nodded.
"I'm sorry," Duncan told his neighbor, "Tori and I need to check up on Richie."
"Of course," Maurice replied, "I hope he makes a speedy recovery."
"Thanks, Maurice," Tori replied.
He left the barge seconds later.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Richie gasped, being revived. He could remember the race as clear as day. It felt like he was in the race, but he wasn't. The last thing he could remember was trying to take the top spot from Basil, and then tumbling over as he and Basil fell off their bikes, followed by their bikes exploding. Then everything went black.
The next thing he knew, he was awake here at this make shift mattress Tori set up for him before the race even started. He was at the barge. It almost felt like Astral projection, something Mandrake once mentioned during the Halloween party.
"Welcome back," Duncan greeted his friend as he and Tori entered the area.
"Thanks," Richie nodded, "I suppose this is supposed to be some kind of lesson, right?"
"One of them," Tori answered.
"Basil's dead, isn't he?" Richie asked.
"He died on the way to the hospital," Duncan answered.
"I know I wasn't there," Richie explained, "but the race felt real to me. Whatever that robot was doing, it matched my personality. I could see him. I was so pissed off, I wanted to run right over him. That was something the robot was feeling, my emotions, but I did not consciously try to kill him."
"I don't think it matters to Basil right now," Tori stated.
"If you had actually took part of that race instead of that robot," Duncan explained to Richie, "It would have meant you're dead in France, dead in Europe, for almost a generation."
Duncan glanced around before continuing, "You have Janet to thank for covering your tracks, albeit, it was bad with the alien drugs being illegally bought by Basil."
He sighed, "Anyway, It also means you're going to have to live with this for the rest of your life."
"You mean your immortal life?" Tori asked.
"Basically," Duncan answered.
"Mac, did you ever," Richie paused as he asked, "screw up like this?"
"Sometimes," Duncan answered before he heard a knock on the door. He glanced over at both Richie and Tori, "You two should get going."
"Good idea," Tori replied, "Come on, Richie."
"Right," Richie stated before he and Tori left the barge in a hurry.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"Joe," Anne greeted as she entered the empty bar.
"Hi," Joe replied, "thanks for coming down."
"Yeah," Anne stated, "Well, uh, you said it was important. You kinda sounded a bit nervous."
"Yeah, maybe," Joe replied before asking, "So, uh, how you've been holding up?"
"Oh...uh, working hard," Anne answered, "Keeping busy. Trying, uh, not to think about it."
"Yeah. Sure. Sit down, please," Joe insisted, "Sit down."
Anne took a seat at the bar.
"Why don't I get you a drink?" Joe offered.
"Oh, no, thanks," Anne tried declining the offer.
"Uh, trust me," Joe insisted, "you want a drink."
"Well now, you're making me nervous," Anne stated. She was wondering what Joe was up to, what was going on.
Joe poured the drink, "You know, I've, uh, I've always thought you were, uh, quite the remarkable woman."
"You know something, Joe," Anne spoke up, "You can, uh, skip the sweet talk. Now you said it was important, so...I'm here."
"Yeah, Look...you know how there were always things, uh, about MacLeod he couldn't tell you?" Joe asked, "Things he didn't get to explain before he died."
"Yes. So?" Anne answered.
"It's time for the explanation," Joe declared before he reached into his coat pocket, "He, uh, wanted me to give you this."
Anne looked on in surprise when she saw what he had just given her.
"What is it?" Anne asked.
"It's a plane ticket to Paris," Joe answered.
"I – I'm going to Paris?" Anne stammered in surprise.
Joe tilted his head to the side, "I guess that depends."
"Depends on what?" Anne asked.
As if on cue, the phone rang and Joe picked it up, and then he handed it to Anne.
"It's for you," he told her.
Anne braced herself as she took the receiver, "H – Hello?"
She heard a voice she thought she'd never hear again. It was Duncan MacLeod, "Duncan? Duncan?"
"Yes," Duncan answered, "it's me."
Anne had to head over to Paris. She had to confirm whether or not that was really Duncan.

Author's Note:
I didn't much care for Ceirdwyn or Paolo, so I unfortunately condensed the episode/chapter, and it's probably one of the shortest chapters in the series, but I managed to give the former a mention. The next chapter, the 40th chapter, will more than likely be a better chapter. I also rushed things so I can get to the Season 3 arc finale.
