Chapter Seventy-Three: A Friend Indeed
"How did you enjoy the park?" Richie asked, looking at Jenny.
"I had a fun time, Daddy," Jenny answered.
"We're glad that you had fun, sweetie," Tori replied.
"Are you Richie Ryan?"
The three turned around to see a blonde woman in her 40s. Immediately, Richie recognized the woman, "Jackie?"
Jackie nodded her head, "Yeah. Donna's mother."
"What's going on here?" Tori asked, "Are you the mother of the same Donna that claimed that little boy was Richie's child, that same Donna?"
"Yeah," Jackie nodded, "Unfortunately, that would be me."
"So…..you're aware of what Donna has done?" Richie inquired.
"Her giving her son up for adoption," Jackie answered, "and joining a twisted cult, in addition to trying to baby trap. Yes."
She took a deep breath before continuing, "I'm very sorry for what my daughter has put you guys through. I've met you before, Richie and I know that you're a really nice guy. I didn't raise my daughter to be a selfish, abusive bitch like she had been especially over the past couple of years."
"It's not your fault, Jackie," Richie assured her.
Jackie nodded, "I realize that, but with Donna hitting her son before surrendering him, and for no reason, and for what she done to you, you guys, but I thought I raised her better."
"You did what you could," Tori assured her, "Sometimes the kid turns out different than what the parents expects of them."
"That's a sad, but true fact," Jackie sighed sadly, "Is there anything I can do for you and your family, Richie?"
"Thank you," Richie declined, "but we're good."
"All right," Jackie smiled, "It was good seeing you by the way."
"Same here," Richie replied before Jackie left the three.
"Who's Donna?" Jenny asked.
"A bad person," Richie answered, "Don't worry about her because she won't go near you."
"Not if we can help it," Tori added.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"No. I was just startled, that's all," Duncan said as he was talking on the phone as Richie, Tori and Jenny arrived at the loft, "Yeah. I'll be there. I'll catch the next flight to Paris. Thank you."
He hung up the phone.
"What is it, Mac?" Richie asked.
Duncan sighed before looking at the trio, "It's Maurice."
There was a pause of silence as they looked on in surprise.
"What about Maurice?" Tori asked, breaking the silence.
"He was rushed to the hospital," Duncan answered, "They said he collapsed at his restaurant. It was a heart attack."
"So, he's dead?" Richie asked.
Duncan shook his head, "Not exactly. They said he had an aortic aneurysm. They don't know how long he has, but they'll let me see him."
"We'll all see him, Mac," Tori chimed in.
"Tori, no, I couldn't….." Duncan started to argue.
"No, no, Mac, Maurice is a friend of ours too," Richie interjected, "Besides, it'll be good for Jenny to see Paris before….."
Duncan sighed before he relented, "All right. You three can go, but this is not, I repeat not an all fun trip."
Tori scoffed, "Like Richie and I don't know that already!"
Richie then added, "And Jenny is mature enough to not expect anything fancy either."
Duncan smirked and nodded, "Well, let's go."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan entered the hospital room with Richie and Tori in tow while letting Jenny rest on the sofa in the barge. This was the private room Maurice would be in as the staff had shown them. They looked at what appeared to be a body laying on the bed, and the room was quiet.
"Maurice," Duncan called out quietly.
"Yeah. This guy is in rough shape."
The three turned around to see Maurice standing there wearing a hospital gown, smiling at them.
"Allow me to move this," Maurice stated before he moved the curtain.
The Highlander looked on in surprise, seeing his friend. It was great that he was alive, but he was surprised to see him awake.
"It is good to see you again, MacLeod," Maurice greeted his friend before he went to hug him.
"Good to see you again, Maurice," Duncan replied, hugging him back.
Maurice then saw Richie and Tori, "How's the engaged couple doing?"
"Actually, we're married now," Richie answered. They shown Maurice their wedding bands.
"You're married!" Maurice exclaimed happily, "Congratulations! That is marvelous news!"
He proceeded to hug Richie before he hugged Tori.
"We also have a daughter," Tori added.
"So soon?" Maurice quipped.
"Um, we can't have children biologically," Richie told him, "We adopted a girl."
"And she's waiting at the hotel, excited to meet you," Tori added.
"Well, I cannot wait to meet your child," Maurice replied.
"And I'm sure Jenny can't wait to meet you too," Duncan smiled.
"Well, what are we waiting for?" Maurice told the group, "Let's get going."
Duncan looked around, "But first, we will have to get you into some clothes."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"So, what exactly happened?" Richie asked as the group walked down the quay leading to the barge.
"What do you mean?" Maurice interjected, now dressed in normal clothes.
"The moments that led to you being rushed to the hospital," Richie elaborated.
"Well, one minute, I was doing my work at my restaurant," Maurice answered, "and then the next thing I knew, I woke up in the hospital and they said I had some aortic aneurysm. It might have been a heart attack as they patched me up, good as new."
"How long were you in that hospital?" Tori asked.
"A couple of days, give or take," Maurice answered, "I guess they couldn't get a hold of family, so they called you, MacLeod."
"I guess they did," Duncan nodded.
The three immortals sensed the Buzz.
"What's going on?" Maurice asked.
Moments later, Amanda appeared before the four, causing the three immortals to ease tension.
"Amanda, hello," Tori greeted her teacher.
"Hey, Tori," Amanda hugged her student, "How's married life going?"
"It's going great," Tori answered, "for the most part."
"What do you mean?" Amanda and Maurice asked in unison.
"We'll explain in a little bit," Tori answered.
"Maurice, you remember Amanda, right?" Duncan reintroduced his friend/lover.
"It's good to see you again, my dear," Maurice kissed Amanda's hand.
"It's good to see you again, Maurice," Amanda smiled.
The group walked into the barge and heard Jenny talking to someone as Duncan, Richie, Tori and Amanda sensed the Buzz.
"Don't let me have another heart attack now," Maurice told his friends.
"How long have you been around?" Jenny asked.
"For over five thousand years," a familiar voice answered, "I am amazed that you are able to catch on to who I really am, for a child."
They saw Jenny sitting up on the couch talking to Methos.
"Mommy, Daddy, who are those people?" Jenny asked, pointing at Amanda and Maurice.
"Oh my gosh!" Amanda exclaimed happily, "Is this your adopted daughter?"
"Yes," Richie answered, "That's our Jenny."
"She was originally named Engel," Tori answered, "but after we adopted her, we changed her name to Jenny."
"Hi, Jenny," Amanda knelt down to the girl, "my name is Amanda."
"You're Aunt Amanda which Uncle MacLeod and mommy and daddy mentioned," Jenny spoke up, "Nice to meet you."
"And this guy here is our good friend Maurice," Richie introduced Maurice to his daughter, "Maurice, meet our daughter Jenny."
"It is wonderful to meet you, kiddo," Maurice replied.
"Nice to meet you too, Maurice," Jenny smiled at the man.
"Now, who's the man here?" Maurice asked about Methos.
"Oh, my name is Adam Pierson," Methos shook his hand, "it's nice to meet you."
"You must be a friend of MacLeod's," Maurice replied, "any friend of MacLeod's is a friend of mine. Are you seeing anybody?"
"No," Methos shook his head, "My work keeps me from having free time."
"Ah, I see," Maurice replied, "You really should find a work wife."
"I'll look into it," Methos nodded.
"You might want to give him time with that," Duncan suggested, "He just lost a woman he loved months ago."
"I see," Maurice replied, "I understand."
"Should we have this conversation in front of him?" Methos inquired, "I mean, does he…."
"Whatever it is that you need to talk about….." Maurice started to say.
"Maurice, I did consider telling you why I had so many enemies awhile back," Duncan told his friend, "So, it's time I tell you."
Duncan then proceeded to tell Maurice about him being immortal, his immortality, along with Richie, Tori, Methos and Amanda also being immortals, and other things he needed to know about immortality.
"So, let me get this straight," Maurice looked around at his immortal friends, "You guys are immortals, right?"
"That's right," Duncan nodded.
"So, in that case, how old are each of you exactly?" Maurice asked.
"I'm over four hundred years old," Duncan answered.
"I'm over a thousand years old," Amanda added.
"And I am over five thousand years old," Methos added in.
Tori and Richie looked at each other before looking at Maurice.
"And what about you two?" Maurice asked.
"We're both in our twenties," Tori answered.
"More specifically," Richie added, "I'm 22 and she's 23."
"Ah, I see," Maurice replied, "So, you don't die if you are immortal."
"There is one way," Duncan stated.
"One way?"
"The only way an immortal dies is if they lose their head by decapitation," Duncan answered.
"That's a terrible way to die," Maurice replied. He sighed before he spoke up, "You know, MacLeod, I always knew there was something about you that was different. I – I just wish that you told me about this sooner."
"There is a reason I didn't," Duncan told his friend, "Many people who knew about who I am…...they're not here anymore."
"Like your Tessa?" Maurice inquired.
"Yes, like Tessa," Duncan answered.
"I'm sorry," Maurice nodded, "I understand though."
The group looked around in a pause of silence.
"So, what's the immortal situation?" Amanda asked, breaking the silence.
"Jack and the IUA Leader wanted me to let you guys know about an immortal situation in Paris since they know you guys are at the area," Methos explained, "The immortal is Dawes, just Dawes according to records because he prefers to only be called by his first name, and his mortal girlfriend Shante Millon. They are planning something heavy at the basement area of the bank."
"Do you know anything about a bank with a basement?" Duncan asked Maurice.
"Most banks in Paris have basements," Maurice answered.
"The IUA mentioned something about a fail safe in that said basement," Methos chimed in.
Maurice considered this, "Ah, I heard you there. I believe I know one specific bank capable of holding a fail safe that you mentioned."
"Why would they mess around with a fail safe?" Amanda asked.
"From what the IUA explained," Methos answered, "Dawes is doing all he can to corrupt selected places across the globe for himself and his beloved Shante. He's already committed murders and stolen from Monaco, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City, Milan, Greece, Tokyo and Australia."
"What on Earth is he doing with these locations?" Duncan asked.
"He's killed twenty people during his conquests," Methos answered, "and stolen nearly one million dollars worth of stuff."
"Sounds like he's crazy," Maurice replied, "even if he is doing this for love."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"Are you sure about this?" Shante asked, looking at her lover.
"Trust me about this, Shante," Dawes answered, "I've been around since the 1920s and I know for a fact these are the finest. I've taken some time to figure out what we will take and we will live our lives to the fullest."
"I love you, Dawes," Shante smiled at her boyfriend.
"I love you too," Dawes replied, caressing her cheek and then her red hair before they shared a kiss.
"Go for it, my love," Shante told her lover.
"You bet," Dawes smiled before he left her.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan, Richie, Amanda and Maurice walked down to the bank. Everyone knew their assignments for this task. Tori was at the barge helping the group in stopping Dawes.
It didn't take long for the group to take action once Methos had grabbed Shante while she was walking down the streets and they interrogated her, and Maurice found the exact bank Dawes was going to corrupt.
Methos would volunteer to babysit Jenny, who was asleep on the couch when the others left the barge, while looking after Shante to make sure she wouldn't do anything, or try to escape.
"Good work, you are at the entry of the bank," Tori informed the four.
"Thanks, Tori," Maurice replied.
Duncan led the group to the main entrance of the bank. Maurice talked to the tellers of the bank while the immortals walked into the basement.
Duncan, Richie and Amanda walked into the basement and they sensed the Buzz. They looked to see a man with long brown hair, and he smiled at the group. This was Dawes.
"You've come for my crowning achievement?" Dawes asked.
"You must be Dawes," Duncan spoke up.
"Yeah, you must be the Highlander," Dawes quipped.
Duncan then stepped forward and drawn out his sword.
"You want a challenge don't you," Dawes quipped as he drawn out his sword. "All right then. A challenge you will get."
Richie and Amanda stepped back as Duncan walked to the fail safe to duel with Dawes.
"You two keep an eye on things in case someone tries to come in here," Duncan instructed.
"MacLeod!" Maurice entered the room.
"Maurice, what are you doing here?" Richie asked.
"I wanted to see what an immortal duel looks like," Maurice answered.
"The question is," Amanda asked, "How did you manage to get in here?"
"I managed to convince the tellers that someone is trying to corrupt their system. And they are on high alert, but I managed to sneak past here before I could be trapped in the lobby of the doors."
Duncan nodded before the duel with Dawes began. Richie, Amanda and Maurice watched as the two immortals dueled in the fail safe. Duncan began to become overwhelmed as Dawes was gaining the upper hand.
"Richie," Tori chimed in via communicator, "Let's get Dawes a bit of a disadvantage. See the controls?"
Richie looked at the controls nearby, "What about it?"
"It's the controls to the fail safe," Tori instructed, "Head over there and then flip the switches. Dawes should get the disadvantage from there."
Richie nodded before hurrying to the controls and flipped the switches in the control panel. The group looked to see the fail safe lowering to the floor.
Duncan dodged just when Dawes was about to give out a killing blow. Then Duncan impaled Dawes with his katana.
"That has got to hurt!" Maurice exclaimed.
"That is not possible," Dawes groaned in pain.
"There can be only one," Duncan declared before he beheaded Dawes.
Maurice, Amanda and Richie looked on as Duncan took Dawes' quickening. The powerful quickening caused damages to the basement before it ended and Duncan dropped to his knees.
"So, that is the quickening?" Maurice asked, surprised, "That's something I am glad I got to witness."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"It was nice knowing you," Maurice told Shante as she was being taken into custody by IUA Agents, "let's not keep in touch."
Shante rolled her eyes as the IUA agents took her away.
"Well," Jack informed the group, "Our agents are going to let everyone at the Paris International Bank a cover up like we do with other immortal related businesses. Everything will be handled perfectly."
Tori sighed, "That's good to hear. Thanks, Jack."
"Anytime," Jack nodded before he left the barge.
"I sure hope that time in custody makes Shante change her ways," Amanda stated.
"Maybe it will, maybe not," Duncan replied.
"So, what'll we do now?" Tori asked.
"I say we have some dinner," Richie answered, holding Jenny, "since we're at the area, we should enjoy it."
"Wonderful idea," Maurice replied, "MacLeod and I will catch up."
"What do you mean?" Amanda asked, "What are you guys going to do?"
"I need to talk to MacLeod privately about something," Maurice answered, "We'll catch up."
"Okay then," Richie replied.
With that, Richie, Jenny, Tori, Amanda and Methos all left the barge.
"I never imagined I'd be friends with an immortal," Maurice told Duncan, "and from what I saw, was spectacular."
"That's precisely what I do," Duncan replied.
"So, in the end, there can be only one, right?" Maurice inquired.
"That's how it goes in the game," Duncan answered.
"Well, I know you are going to do just fine with the game," Maurice told his friend, "and I believe that you are going to make it through in the end. I just…..I just wish I could be there to see it."
Duncan looked at his friend in surprise, "What do you mean?"
"You know….You do remember when I said the time comes for all of us mortals," Maurice stated, "I'm just in a different road."
Duncan looked confused for a moment.
"I assume this wouldn't be the first mortal death you've encountered," Maurice told his friend.
Duncan reflected on the deaths of Little Deer, Tessa and Charlie, among other mortals who he cared about.
"So, I want you to tell the others after you've processed everything," Maurice told the Highlander, "We take what we can get in life, and we use it to the best of our ability. I'll be seeing you."
Duncan and Maurice shared a hug. Then, the phone rang.
"I don't need to get that," Duncan stated.
"Actually, you do need to get it," Maurice replied.
"Well, thank you for everything," Duncan nodded before he went to get the phone.
"It's no trouble at all," Maurice replied, "Always happy to help a friend in need, and that's what makes me a friend indeed."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Methos looked at Duncan as he answered the phone.
"Yes?" Duncan called on the phone, "Yes. I know he…well, that's impossible. He was standing right….."
He looked to see Maurice was no longer standing where he was seconds ago. Duncan looked around as he dropped the phone in shock.
Methos sighed sadly and shook his head as Duncan picked up the phone, "Sorry. When did this happen? I see, and he never woke up? Thank you."
Duncan sighed before he hung up the phone before he noticed Methos standing nearby.
"You finally found out the truth, huh?" Methos inquired.
"Maurice passed away," Duncan replied, "and he never woke up from his coma."
He glanced at him, "You knew the whole time, didn't you?"
Methos nodded, "Yes."
Duncan took the hint that he understood why. Methos probably didn't want to worry about them, "Thank you."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan held the urn in his hand, preparing a memorial for Maurice. It had been a few days since Maurice Lalonde had passed away and he had a lot to think about.
He remembered the first time he met the guy.
Maurice came out of the shower, wearing a robe. "I have no money."
"What's going on here?" Duncan asked firmly.
"Who are you?" Maurice asked in turn.
"More to the point, what are you doing on this barge?"
"I'm having a shower."
"I can see that," Duncan replied, walking over to the stranger.
"What are you doing on this boat?"
"I own it," Duncan said.
Maurice then realized who he was talking to. "Of course, MacLeod! My friend!"
"I think I'd remember a friend like you," Duncan replied walking towards him, causing him to back up in response.
"But I'm Maurice," Maurice stated, "from the boat next door. Everybody knows Maurice."
Duncan admitted that he had taken Maurice for granted on more than one occasion, but he was always grateful for all of the help he had offered him, especially when he told him about Hyde after Richie was arrested. There was something that Maurice once said after letting him know that a friend Eli was dying that had stuck with him, especially with the revelation given to him.
"The time comes for all of us, my friend," Maurice replied, "Kings, queens and homeless alike. That's why a good bottle of wine, a good laugh with a friend is so precious. There's so little time to enjoy them. I don't think I would want to live forever. Would you?"
Duncan also recalled that Maurice was a gentlemen and was loyal to his friends, recalling when he introduced him to Nefertiti.
"It's Maurice," Duncan introduced Nefertiti to Maurice, "He lives on the boat next door."
Maurice took off his hat and held out his hand, "And bonjour to you, mademoiselle."
Duncan intercepted, "Bonjour, Maurice."
Duncan walked over to the deck of the barge where Amanda, Richie, Tori and Jenny were waiting for him.
Richie recalled what a good friend Maurice was when he and Tori first met the guy.
"This is Maurice," Duncan introduced his friend to the pair, "He lives on the barge next door."
Maurice eyed the pair and smiled as Duncan introduced the pair to his neighbor, "Richie and Tori are my old friends. Getting older fast, and Tori is a genius."
"Nice to meet you, Maurice," Tori smiled and shook his hand.
"A genius, huh?" Maurice eyed Tori.
"Yeah," Tori nodded, "I was raised in a family of geniuses."
"How are you doing?" Richie asked as he shook Maurice's hand.
"Vitamins," Maurice glanced around, "the boy needs iron."
"I'll keep it in mind," Richie replied.
"Maurice," Duncan told his neighbor, "uh, Richie, Tori, and I have some catching up to do."
"I understand," Maurice replied, "You don't have to ask Maurice twice. Red meat and red wine is also good."
"He'll make note of that," Tori replied as she and Richie walked into the barge.
Richie also recalled Maurice supporting him when he was taking part of his short lived racing career.
"Ridden like a champion!" Maurice exclaimed happily.
"Thanks, Maurice," Richie replied as he shook Maurice's hand, "Looks like I might get another run before dark."
"I don't think Maurice's heart could take it," Duncan chimed in.
"My heart's as young as yours," Maurice told Richie, "but I have to be at work. Good luck, Richie, and be careful."
"Thanks, Maurice."
Tori recalled Maurice being an understanding person and gave her some advice when Richie was framed by Hyde for the murders that were committed.
"Maurice," Tori spoke up as Maurice got the bags inside, "I wanted to apologize for how I was lashing out."
"I understand how you feel," Maurice assured Tori, "You have feelings for the boy, don't you?"
Tori looked up, still shaking, but she was trying to calm down, "Yeah. He's a dear friend to me, maybe a bit more than a friend."
Maurice chuckled, "I see there. More than friends, less than lovers?"
"In a nutshell," Tori nodded, "look, Maurice, I'm sorry for lashing out like that. I rarely cuss like that because my aunt had told me not to growing up. This whole thing is just bothering me."
"It's quite all right," Maurice assured her, "I understand how you feel. If you and Richie ever reach that lover's status, just know there are two things Maurice knows about: food and love."
"I'll keep note of it," Tori nodded.
Tori was amazed on how Maurice was able to tell that she and Richie would eventually become a couple even if she didn't admit it at the time. She also recalled after the races that ended Richie's racing career after the robot Richie "died" and Janet made her statement. Maurice had a way with words.
"And to imagine if that was the real Richie who died with that other guy," Maurice stated, "I keep thinking of the things he'd miss out on given he's still young. Marriage, Children. It is always sad when someone dies so young. My first wife was a religious woman. To her, those who had died were never far away. I hope it's true."
"Truer than you think," Duncan stated, thinking about Tessa, Darius and Fitz.
Amanda recalled Maurice giving her advice when she was visiting MacLeod after Rebecca's death.
"My first wife Marchele and I – God rest her soul – used to fight all the time," Maurice stated, "It's my fondest memory."
"The fighting?" Amanda asked.
"Huh. The making up," Maurice answered, "The greater the fight, the greater the passion. I see some of her in you."
"What are you saying, that I'm in love with MacLeod?" Amanda asked.
"No offense, Amanda," Maurice said, "but a blind man could see it."
"Really?" Amanda quipped.
"Hm. There are two things that Maurice knows about," he declared, "food and love."
The group looked to see Methos had met up with them at the deck.
"Good of you to show up," Amanda replied with a small smile.
"I think Maurice would want all of us to be in attendance to remember him," Methos replied.
"He's not wrong there," Richie replied, holding Jenny.
The group looked on as Duncan began the memorial for Maurice.
"All things considered, Maurice, you were a good friend to us," Duncan spoke as he looked at the urn, "whether you known me longer than the others, or known Jenny and Adam for the shorter time than the others. You always helped us when we needed it, and it was good that you kept our immortality a secret and I will forever be grateful to you."
He proceeded to take off the lid of the urn and squat down at the edge of the barge. "So now, my friend…."
The Highlander reached into the urn. "Go where you never went, into the sea, just as you wanted."
Duncan scooped three handfuls of ashes into the sea before dumping the rest of the ashes into the sea, "I'll miss you."
Author's Notes:
I made this send off for Maurice as a dedication in memory of Maurice Lalonde's actor Michel Modo, who passed away on 25 September 2008 of cancer. He will be remembered for his contributions to the Highlander franchise and will be missed by one and all.
I made a tribute video to Maurice on my YouTube channel a while back.
Dawes and Shante, ugh, not my favorite villains to write as they are just characters I made up. It's obvious Duncan MacLeod was not in danger in this chapter, and if they were actual villains in the actual series, they would be despised such as Throne from "The Cross of St. Antoine." Yeah, that bad.

Maurice came out of the shower, wearing a robe. "I have no money."

This scene is from "Unholy Alliance Part Two," which was Maurice's first appearance. This is one of the handful of episodes Tori and Richie weren't with MacLeod in, so I felt the flashbacks were necessary, along with the flashbacks that were already in the story.
"The time comes for all of us, my friend," Maurice replied, "Kings, queens and homeless alike. That's why a good bottle of wine, a good laugh with a friend is so precious. There's so little time to enjoy them. I don't think I would want to live forever. Would you?"
This line was from the episode "Warmonger," another one of the handful of episodes which Tori and Richie were not featured in.
"It's Maurice," Duncan said to Nefertiti. "He lives on the boat next door."
Maurice took off his hat and held out his hand. "And bonjour to you, mademoiselle."
Duncan intercepted. "Bonjour, Maurice."
This bit is from the episode "Pharaoh's Daughter," in which the female immortal was portrayed by Nia Peeples and another one of the episodes where Richie and Tori weren't present.
"My first wife Marchele and I – God rest her soul – used to fight all the time," Maurice stated, "It's my fondest memory."
"The fighting?" Amanda asked.
"Huh. The making up," Maurice answered, "The greater the fight, the greater the passion. I see some of her in you."

"No offense, Amanda," Maurice said, "but a blind man could see it."

"Hm. There are two things that Maurice knows about," he declared, "food and love."
This episode, "Legacy," is the last of the handful of episodes here in which Richie and Tori are not present, but Rebecca's death is mentioned in the chapter before they return to MacLeod. In case anyone is wondering, these episodes are from Season 2, but just not featured in the Season 2 arc, albeit "Legacy" is the only one of the lot that has contribution to Earth N in general.
