Chapter Twenty-Six: Game of Peril
"Peter's 'mother' is burying him in Paris today," Horton announced as he walked into the room. "Poor woman couldn't afford to fly him home."
Horton was thought to be dead on more than one occasion now, and he had plenty of time to think of a plan to eliminate Duncan MacLeod. With that plan, he used a sociopath felon by the name of Lisa and make her a dead ringer for the deceased Tessa Noel. So far, everything was working according to plan, but now he was banking on Lisa to kill Duncan MacLeod.
He looked over at the woman laying in bandages, "The minor actors have played their roles, Lisa. Now it's up to the star."
The surgeon entered the room and began unwrapping the bandages from Lisa's head.
"I can see the light," Lisa stated with delight as the bandages were being removed.
"It will seem bright at first," Horton informed her, "The eyes are tender."
"It hurts," Lisa said.
"You'll adjust."
"Well," Lisa asked as the last of the bandages have been removed, "what do you think?"
"It's perfect," Horton answered, "It's just perfect."
Lisa looked into the mirror and found herself with blonde hair with a beautiful smile.
"You've done a great job, doctor," Horton told the surgeon, "She's exactly like Tessa."

Richie looked down sadly as he was looking at the casket. He couldn't believe what had happened. His friend Pete was shot and killed. Duncan had tried telling him that he was a Hunter with his wrist looking as if he had a tattoo recently removed. The thing was this guy saved Richie's life earlier, yet Duncan never trusted him.
Then, there was Tori, who was standing next to him. She wasn't taking sides in the matter and made that clear when Pete came into the picture. He didn't like that she was spying on him, even though she up ended telling him that MacLeod asked her to have him wear a monitor in case Pete spoke about something that would cause suspicion. She was grateful for Pete for saving Richie's life at the carnival, but deep down she knew that he had an interior motive, and from what the IUA could bring out, she was right. He was working with Horton, who was very much alive.
"I'm sorry for your loss, Rich," Tori gently touched Richie's arm.
"Thanks, Tori," Richie looked over at her, "I know you didn't really care for him, but at least you were respectful."
She gave a gentle nod. They both noticed Duncan joining them as he stood near Richie.
"What are you doing here?" Tori asked, "Wanting me to spy on Richie some more?"
"No," Duncan shook his head, "I'm paying my respects."
"A bit sooner," Richie replied, "Pete might still be alive."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan walked over to a grave which was not too far from where Pete was being buried. He looked at the headstone which read:
In Memory of
Tessa Noel
"You know how you think you know things?" Duncan talked to the grave, as if he was talking to Tessa, "Well, I just didn't trust this kid. I was so sure. Now, he's dead, and I don't know what I'm sure about anymore. Maybe you live four hundred years, you just forget what it's like to be human. You always had just a great way of reminding me, Tess."
Duncan briefly recalled when he ran out of the Tudor house. The night he found Tessa laying dead, shot by a mugger. Then he opened his eyes and looked back at the grave, "Oh, I miss you."
Suddenly, saw a woman walk through the fog. He could have sworn this woman looked like Tessa, "Tess?"
Moments later, the woman vanished through the fog. Duncan walked through the gravestones towards where the woman disappeared. He looked around and spotted her walking towards the cemetery entrance. He frowned peering through the fog. The woman glanced back towards him, and left the cemetery.
"Did you guys see her?" Duncan asked as Tori and Richie approached him.
"See who?" Tori asked, confused.
"Mac, what are you talking about?" Richie added.
Duncan realized that the woman was now gone, and they probably haven't seen the woman, "Nothing."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Richie was at the bridge talking at the bridge over Siene with Joe, Duncan and Tori.
"I'm not in the mood for any games, Dawson," Duncan told his watcher, "Who are you talking about?"
"Someone in Paris is accessing our computers," Joe answered, "Files, records, everything. Bank funds are being transferred and even I can't trace them."
"Welcome to the twenty-first century," Duncan stated, "Computer theft is a growth industry."
"I know," Joe replied, "and that's why we designed our system to be bulletproof."
"We?" Duncan glanced at him, confused.
"Horton and I," Joe elaborated, "We designed it together, and the IUA happens to indeed have a connection with the Watchers."
"You shot Horton at point blank range," Richie stated.
"Yeah, and you both saw him die," Tori added, "and what did you mean the IUA has a connection has a connection with you guys."
"Well, to answer your question, Tori," Joe explained, "after Darius was killed, your mother ended up interviewing me. She was intense, but eventually, the IUA ended up finding out there are good Immortals and the evil Immortals as well as the Hunters are what they should be concerned about."
"So that answers that question," Tori quipped.
"And explains why I recently got to join the IUA," Richie added, "and why they know Horton is alive despite what they saw."
"As for Horton," Duncan spoke up, "We both saw him hit the river. No body was ever found."
"Maybe I'm a lousy shot, all right?" Joe retorted.
"Or maybe he wore a Kelvar vest," Duncan stated, "Like you said, he always left a way out."
"You think Dawson's right?" Richie asked.
"The IUA shows Horton is alive," Tori stated.
"Horton is as good a survivor as he is a killer," Duncan said, "and now it all fits."
"What fits?" Tori asked.
"Horton and Richie's friend Pete," Duncan answered.
"Pete?" Richie replied in an outburst, "Pete is dead! Horton is alive! One's got nothing to do with the other. You won't leave it alone, will you?"
He stormed off before Tori followed him moments later.
"Maybe he might have a point," Tori told Richie, who turned around in response.
"What?"
"I'm not saying anything about Pete," Tori stated, "but maybe Pete was being coerced into working with the Hunters. That's my own theory, and that was why I was neutral when it came to Pete."
Richie paused for a moment. Maybe Tori had a point. Pete probably was working with the Hunters, or the Watchers, and he was probably coerced. That was possible because they knew how ruthless Horton could be.
"You're probably right," Richie nodded, "but it still hurts because Pete was a friend to me."
"I know," Tori comforted her friend, "I know. It'll be okay. We'll get through this, okay?"
"Okay," Richie replied before giving her a hug. Tori accepted the hug.
That afternoon, they made it back to the barge.
"Hey, Mac!" Tori called out first.
"Mac, we need to talk to you a second," Richie chimed in, "I've been doing a lot of thinking about Pete and all that business after Tori talked to me, and I just..."
He froze the second he saw the woman who resembled Tessa. Even Tori froze in shock as well.
"Uh, Lisa Millon," Duncan introduced the woman to the pair, "this is Richie Ryan, and Tori Gordon."
"Hi," Lisa faced the pair.
"Hi," Richie replied, finally getting himself together.
"Hello," Tori followed suit.
"I'm sorry," Duncan apologized to Lisa, "you really do look like someone we know."
"She sure does," Tori muttered.
"I guess you weren't kidding," Lisa stated.
"No I wasn't," Duncan replied as Lisa got into the car, he looked over at the pair, "Later."
"Yeah, sure," Richie replied before he glanced back at Tori, "What the hell was that about?"
"I have no idea," Tori shook her head, "man, I hope Mac knows what he's doing."
"What do you mean?" Richie asked.
"There's just something strange about her," Tori crossed her arms.
"Besides her looking like Tessa?"
"Yes. It seems there's more to Lisa than just a Tessa doppelganger," Tori placed her thumb and index finger to her chin, "and we'll soon enough find out what it is."
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan listened as Lisa discussed her past.
"After art school, I did two years at the Sobonne and then to France for postgraduate work. I met a guy, got married, got divorced, and that's the story of my life. Any more questions?"
"Not at the moment," he replied.
"Good," Lisa replied, "for a moment, I thought you were going to ask me my mother's maiden name."
"What is it?" Duncan asked before stating, "I'm just kidding."
He noticed the waiter topping off his wine glass, "Merci."
Suddenly, Duncan recalled a memory of Tessa. He remembered holding her in his arms, and kissing her.
"What are you thinking?" Lisa asked.
"Nothing," Duncan lied before he reflected on another memory.
"Tessa," Duncan told Tessa, "you're the most wonderful woman I've known my entire life."
"Do I really look so much like that other woman?" Lisa asked.
"Yes," Duncan answered, "you really do."
"They say everyone has a double somewhere," Lisa stated, "I'd love to meet mine."
"I'm afraid that's not going to happen," Duncan sadly replied.
"She was the one in the graveyard?" Lisa asked before giving out her condolences, "It's her you were seeing? I must bring back memories. I'm sorry."
"Don't be," Duncan replied, "I'm glad we met."
"So am I," Lisa replied.

"You seem happy," Richie said as he and Tori approached Duncan on deck of the barge.
"Any reason I shouldn't be?" Duncan asked.
"No, just that Horton's out there," Richie answered.
"That's definitely eye of suspicion," Tori added, "I told my mom the gist of everything and she told said for you to keep an eye out."
"If he is, he is," Duncan stated, "This isn't about Horton, is it?"
"It's about coincidence," Tori replied.
"Yeah," Richie added, "It's about being in the right place at the right time. Mac, I think you might have been right about Pete."
"She's not Pete," Duncan interjected.
"Why?" Richie asked, "Because you don't want her to be?"
"You're not exactly being objective about this," Tori crossed her arms, "We're implying about Pete working for the Hunters, with Horton, but on our side, we think he was being coerced into working with Horton, knowing how ruthless he can be."
"I see," Duncan stated, "but I've seen doubles before."
"How many times?" Richie asked, "Once? Twice? And that's in over four hundred years."
"I have to play this out," Duncan stressed.
"Mac," Richie insisted, "if something looks too good to be true, it usually is."
"We both wish Tessa was back with us," Tori added, "but she's not."
"Don't you think I know that?" Duncan asked.
"I don't know," Richie retorted, "Do you?"
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
"You know," Joe stated as he was looking at the pigeons, "even the damn pigeons look better here than in Chicago."
"I'm not much of a pigeon critic, Dawson," Richie replied.
"Don't look at me either," Tori shook her head.
"Eh," Janet sighed, "I'm just here on business."
"You called because we're such old friends," Joe told the pair as Janet eyed them, "as well as Tori calling her mother. You want my help with MacLeod."
"How do you know?" Richie asked.
"Because otherwise you'd go to him," Joe answered, "the both of you, unless the IUA somehow has to get involved."
"Which we do right now," Janet stated, "good to see you again, Dawson."
"Glad we're not interrogating each other this time," Joe replied.
"It's this woman he's seeing, Lisa Millon," Richie spoke up.
"She's a dead ringer to Tessa, right down to the smile," Tori added.
"A doppelganger," Janet spoke up.
"A what?" Richie asked, confused.
"A perfect double for a living person," Tori answered, "except Tessa is dead."
"Oh," Richie nodded.
"Now, if this were a set up," Joe asked, "don't you think MacLeod would see through it?"
"I'm not sure he wants to," Richie answered.
"I think he's trying to hold on to keeping Tessa alive with the doppelganger," Tori added.
"You want me to check her out, even though I give you the creeps," Joe stated.
"And for the IUA to help out as well?" Janet added.
"Yeah, we do," Richie nodded.
"Anything for an old friend," Joe replied.
"And Horton is on our agenda today," Janet added.
Richie noticed a car passing by, "Dawson, look out!"
Tori followed the gaze, "Mom!"
Tori jumped in front of her mother while Richie jumped in front of Joe, and they took the bullets for them, before falling to the ground.
"Tori!" Janet exclaimed in panic. Joe held her back, "You do know your daughter's immortal, right?"
Janet took some deep breaths, trying to keep it together.
"You guys have been hit!" Joe exclaimed.
"We got that," Richie replied.
"It was Horton," Janet stated.
"I saw that!" Joe stated in shock, "I can't believe it!"
"How bad is it?" Richie asked. Tori grunted as she gathered the last of her strength to hold Richie's hand.
"It's bad," Joe answered, "you each took three rounds."
"We get it...we're dying," Tori replied.
"Not again," Richie replied before dying, "Stick around. We'll be right back."
Tori also died seconds after Richie. Joe looked over at a shocked Janet.
"You know," Joe told her, "this almost resembled Romeo and Juliet in a way."
"We can't make references in a time like this!" Janet exclaimed, annoyed.
Minutes later, Richie gasped, revived, "Hello, Joe, Leader."
"Thank goodness," Joe replied. Tori gasped, revived seconds later.
"Tori?" Janet looked over at her daughter.
"Boo," Tori smiled before Richie helped his friend up as they both stood up.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Duncan went to look for Lisa and managed to find her, and she managed to convince him to make it to the cemetery. Lisa had been dismayed upon seeing that Duncan had believed he found her as Tessa, her love after seeing pictures of her.
"What are we doing here?" Duncan asked as he walked with Lisa through the cemetery, "Your father's grave is that way."
"I'm not here to see my father," Lisa replied, "I'm here to see Tessa."
The pair walked over to Tessa's grave.
"I want you to see the difference between us," Lisa told Duncan, "She's there." She pointed at the grave before continuing, "I'm here, alive. I hope that's clear to you."
"It is," Duncan answered before asking, "but I have one question: what was your face like before?"
"What?" Lisa looked confused, clearly playing dumb.
"Before the surgery," Duncan elaborated further.
"What surgery?"
"Who was Claudine Bardot?"
"Who?"
"Forgotten your mother's maiden name already?"
"Why are you doing this?"
"Why are you? The lying's over Lisa."
"Okay," Lisa explained, "you're right. I lied to you. I lied about everything. I have a son. His name is Marc. He's six years old. Horton has him. He said it was you or him, but I could never hurt you Duncan."
Duncan realized this woman was working with Horton, just as Janet tried to tell him. Stupid of him not to listen to the agents. He looked at Lisa, "Tell me about Marc."
"I have his picture right here," Lisa answered as she was digging through her purse.
"When does Horton come in?" Duncan asked.
"As soon as you're dead," Lisa answered, dropping the Tessa voice and holding him at gun point, "When did you know?"
"Part of me knew when I first saw you," Duncan explained, "I just didn't want to believe it. You're good, Lisa, if that's what your name is."
"It is," Lisa answered, "and don't feel too bad. You aren't the first. I can be anyone I want, anyone you want me to be, and you wanted me to be Tessa."
"At first," Duncan admitted, "Then I just wanted you to be you."
"They all do," Lisa replied, "I was married to a psychiatrist once. He kept trying to understand me, to get into my head. He was still trying when I killed him. They all tried to understand, but I'm one of a kind. That's why Horton broke me out of prison."
"You're a sociopath," Duncan stated.
"Smart," Lisa replied, "but a little late."
"So, why bring me here?" Duncan asked.
"It's Horton's idea," Lisa answered before she laughed and said, "The guy's got a sick sense of humor. What does it feel like when you're about to die? Are you scared? Huh? Is it hard?"
"Not as hard as it is to shoot someone with an empty gun," Duncan stated. Lisa pulled the trigger and it clicked harmlessly. Duncan opened his hands to reveal the bullets, "The cops, or should I say, now the Intergalactic Union Agency, want you in prison, and Horton's going to want you dead."
"Horton and I have a deal," Lisa stated.
"Only as long as he can use you," Duncan replied, "and he can't use you anymore."
Duncan managed to convince Lisa to make Horton believe that he was dead by giving her the bullets to the gun, and she fired the gun in the air and Duncan fell backwards to the ground. That was how Horton found them.
Duncan overheard the conversation between Lisa and Horton.
"I've waited a long time for this," Horton declared, "It's a shame I have to hurry now."
"He's dead," Lisa replied, "What the hell are you doing?"
"I'm taking a trophy," Horton declared. Then Duncan opened his eyes and grabbed his arm, "Not this time."
Duncan kicked Horton off balance and stood back up.
"He made me," Lisa said, "He said you couldn't use me anymore."
"He was wrong," Horton replied before he grabbed Lisa, shot her in the back, and then threw her at Duncan.
"MacLeod," Lisa spoke his name before she died in the Highlander's arms.
"Your turn," Horton declared, holding Duncan at gunpoint. He ducked as Joe shot at him, using the gravestones as cover as he returned fire.
Duncan followed Horton to the cemetery entrance. Horton raised his gun to shoot Duncan, but he was out of bullets. He ran out of the cemetery and right into Joe, who raised his own gun.
"Mister Horton," Janet shouted as she and a group of other IUA agents, including Tori and Richie, "I order you to stand down!"
Horton didn't reply to them, or even comply.
"No, he's mine," Duncan told Joe and the agents before eyeing the Hunter, "Come on, Horton, face me, or are you afraid?! I thought you said you were the man I couldn't kill."
Horton stopped running as he realized he was surrounded by not only the Highlander, but his brother in law, and a bunch of IUA agents who once imprisoned him. Horton turned and pulled a switchblade.
"Drop the switchblade, Mister Horton!" Janet exclaimed.
"Let me handle this, Leader," Duncan told the Head IUA Agent before pointing the blade to his own throat, "You have one chance. Right here."
Horton lunged, and Duncan ducked and then he stabbed Horton in the gut with the switchblade. He dropped to the ground, dead.
"Stand down!" Janet told the agents. She checked on Horton for a pulse, "He's dead, and it looks like for good."
Joe nodded. She gave the Watcher a comforting touch, "I know he was family. I'm sorry."
"It's okay," Joe replied, "thanks for your sympathy, but I personally believe Horton had it coming."
Duncan walked back to Tessa's grave. He looked to see Lisa was laying dead in front of the grave. Tori, Joe, Richie and Janet arrived moments later.
"We are going to consider your actions self defense," Janet told Duncan.
"Thank you," Duncan nodded.
"I'm sorry for your loss," Janet offered condolences, "about Tessa."
"Thank you," Duncan replied, "I think it's time for me to move on."
"Joe and I will take care him," Janet told the Highlander before she left the area with Joe, and that left Duncan with Tori and Richie.
"Are you okay?" Tori asked.
"I will be," Duncan answered.
"I'm sorry, Mac," Richie offered condolences.
"She's not Tessa," Duncan looked down at the dead Lisa, "She never was."
Both Richie and Tori gave him a comforting touch on opposite arms before they left Duncan by himself.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Richie and Tori walked over to Duncan as the barge that they once lived in.
"We know you're going to miss it," Richie spoke up.
"It's just a boat," Duncan replied.
"But it was home," Tori stated, "Home to you guys mostly."
"Yeah," Richie added before asking, "Why are you giving it up?"
"I mourned Tessa too long," Duncan answered, "It's time to move on."
"Where to?" Richie asked.
"Oh, I don't know," Duncan answered, "Somewhere."
He picked up his bag and prepared to leave, only to turn back towards Richie and Tori, "Are you guys coming?"
"Thought you'd never ask," Tori quipped as she joined Duncan.
Richie smiled and proceeded to follow them both.
-Defenders-Chronicles-Highlander-
Felicia walked over at the cemetery as she saw two men carry a body in a body bag, then walked over to the grave after they have left the area. She looked over at Tessa's grave with an evil smirk on her face. Seeing that Tessa was dead made her think a bit more about her plan, her revenge against Duncan MacLeod.
"So, Tessa is dead," Felicia stated, "that's a shame for Duncan MacLeod, and a shame for me because I won't be able to use her as part of my revenge."
She slowly walked away from the grave. With Tessa gone, she now had two on her mind for revenge this time, but it was a matter of how she would carry out her plan, "Now that leaves me with Duncan MacLeod, and little Richard H. Ryan. I cannot wait for them to see me again."
Duncan walked over to a grave which was not too far from where Pete was being buried. He looked at the headstone which read:
In Memory of
Tessa Noel
I did mention before that this story was a modern retelling of Highlander: the Series. Some stuff is going to be altered such as graves with years on them and mentions of what decades they're in as this would be set during the same timeline as Defenders of the Earth.
Author's Note:
I honestly found this chapter to be the hardest to write as "Counterfeit" was a two-parter episode in Highlander: The Series, hence, I had the hardest time deciding how I would start the chapter or how things would turn out. Eventually, I decided to just focus on part 2 with a bit of recap of the first part. The Season 2 arc has officially wrapped up.
