Chapter One: Prelude To Adventure
Central City
Jedda paused with the Necklace of Oros in hand, staring at the huge pit of lava ahead. She'd come down here to destroy this thing, to rid the world of the threat it posed.
She didn't know why she was hesitating, why she hadn't thrown it to the fiery depths. This little jewel contained terrible power, enough to conquer the galaxy.
Naturally, it'd become a target, just as her father had feared it would. Ming the Merciless wanted the jewel, and several new foes had emerged as well. They'd come from all corners of time and space — a queen named Hadea from a secret kingdom, the mad Graviton from another dimension, and unknown others whom Jedda could sense, wicked beings who were craving the power.
Earth was becoming a battleground, an innocent victim in galactic strife. As long as Jedda dangled the jewel from her neck, she would be caught in the conflict too.
Melting this thing seemed the obvious course. All she had to do was throw it into the pit. Then she'd be rid of the trouble it'd wrought.
She drew her arm back — then paused again, sensing something strange from the jewel she held. The necklace felt different than it had before. Physically, it was the same. But Jedda could tell that something else had changed.
When she'd worn the necklace, a link was created. It'd synced with her mind like a glove on her hand. Jedda didn't feel the same link anymore. That was evident at Ice Station Earth, back when she'd struggled to destroy the machine. The necklace responded, but it had resisted. It wouldn't sync with her like it had before. She'd felt like she'd squeezed on a mismatched glove, one that belonged to another person.
Queen Hadea, Jedda thought. Now she understood what was going on. Hadea had taken the necklace away, and mentally bonded herself to it. She'd severed Jedda's link, and created her own. It recognized Hadea as its owner now.
With enough time, Jedda could remove that woman's tie, and bond herself to the jewel again.
Why should I bother? she thought angrily. This necklace had brought so much trouble her way. All she wanted now was to see it burn. Moments before she could toss it, however, she recalled words that her father had spoken — something he'd said several years ago: "Many decisions have consequences. Some of our choices seem simple enough, but they can set a chain of events in motion. This is why you must think before you act."
But there was simply nothing to think about now. The time had come to destroy this thing.
"Some powers are too great for the hands of man."
Jedda threw the necklace in the pit of lava. She watched as a burst of energy emerged, a little confirmation that the jewel was gone.
She took a deep breath, and let out a sigh.
A huge white orb shot forth from the pit, a spherical ball that glistened up in the air.
Jedda tensed, stepping back.
The orb flew straight through the rocky wall, leaving her sight, but not her mind. The necklace's power was in that orb. She'd tried to destroy it, and she had failed. Now the white sphere was out of her control.
"No!" she yelled, reaching out, trying to will the orb back to her. She eyed the spot where she'd last seen it, hoping to track the ball with her thoughts.
Moments later, her horror grew. A bad situation had just turned worse. Jedda could sense the orb leaving town — flying far away from Central City.
Her frame clenched up. Her breaths grew light. Where on Earth was the power going? Who exactly was going to claim it? What had she just unleashed out there?

Rei rolled over and glanced at the floor. Her friends were dozing on temple cots. She smiled at the four girls resting soundly. It was nice having them here for the night. Now that they'd vanquished the latest nuisance, they had a little break from their Sailor duties; they'd been celebrating with sleepovers.
All of them agreed that it was nice to feel normal — even though 'normal' never applied to Usagi.
Rei heaved a chuckle and rolled on her back. She'd never expected to have four best friends. In many respects, they were each quite different. But she saw herself in every one of them too. She liked Makoto's assertive nature; she admired Ami's thoughtfulness; Minako was friendly, and Rei was as well; Usagi had a caring, sensitive side.
All of her thoughts began slipping away. She let out a yawn, and snuggled in place. Just as she was ready to fall asleep, Rei sensed an energy approaching the temple.
Her eyes shot open, and she sat straight up. She'd never felt a power that was quite this strong — not from Beryl, or anyone since. She didn't even know if the crystal could match it.
She looked to her window, shaking a bit. Whatever was approaching was arriving fast.
Seconds later, a large white glow swept right by the home. Then it was gone, speeding on its way.

Oblivion
Queen Hadea stood still in the cell, planting her feet as she spread her arms. The orb was nearing. She could feel it. "Come, my necklace. Return to me."
Graviton eyed her peculiarly. According to what he had stated today, they had been caught by his stringent rulers, and they would be held for many years to come.
But he was wrong, so very wrong. Maybe he was controlled by others, but she would bow to no one at all.
Actually, by this day's end, the whole galaxy would be ruled by her.
A huge white orb shot into the cell, stopping as it landed on Hadea's chest. The sphere shrunk a bit and turned into a jewel; two strands of gold came out of it. The strands wrapped right around Hadea's neck, and the Necklace of Oros was whole again.
Hadea smiled as she eyed the jewel, running a hand on it lovingly. She wasn't quite sure what had brought this about. Someone must have tried to destroy the necklace, not knowing it was impossible. The necklace had reverted to its rawest state, returning to the person it'd been linked to last.
Graviton stared. "The Necklacccce… of Oros," he said. "I musssst… have it." He lifted his hand in Hadea's direction.
Hadea felt a telekinetic wave, clearly meant to pull the necklace away. The necklace, however, remained on her chest. Her mind was already synced with it; she used its power to resist his own. She lifted her palm toward Graviton now.
A huge white burst screamed out of her hand, large enough to blanket his whole frame. His eyes went wide as the blast hit him. It covered his body for a couple of seconds. Afterward, he simply collapsed, not even falling on his knees as he dropped.
Hadea looked over at the bars to the cell. All of them began to crumble in place, falling apart as she willed them to.
She didn't walk, she hovered out, a hand on her hip as the necklace glowed.
Skybrook City — One Year Later
Jedda joined the others as they stared at the screen — one of the few screens that they had working. New Monitor barely functioned at all. They were struggling to keep the base intact.
Hadea appeared on the large TV, sporting a glittering dress and crown. She'd scheduled a worldwide announcement for now. "I, Hadea, Queen of the Galaxy, issue this warning to the rebel groups: you have until tomorrow to declare your surrender. If you do not, expect no mercy when my troops find you." The screen went black.
Jedda threw glances around the chamber. Lothar and Flash looked defiant and bold. Her dad and Mandrake seemed a little more cautious. LJ and Kshin seemed tense as well. Rick wrapped a soft arm around her waist. Did he feel nervous? Did he feel brave? She couldn't be certain as she hugged him back. She wasn't too sure about much these days. But there was one thing she had no doubt of: this predicament was all her fault.
She'd had the necklace one year ago. She could have removed Hadea's link to it. If she had, the orb would have never returned to Hadea; it simply would have stayed with Jedda instead. But Jedda had acted emotionally; she hadn't stopped to think, as her dad advised.
Now the whole galaxy was paying the price. Using the necklace's incredible power, Hadea had conquered planet after planet. Earth looked a lot like the Netherworld now. The streets were white, the trees were gray. The modern-looking buildings had all been changed, many of them modeled after palaces. Hadea's noblewomen and men led nations. The queen's strong armies were enforcing her laws.
Jedda's deep shame was eating her alive. She kept to herself and stayed quiet most days.
"It's not your fault," Rick had said one time, stroking her back as she cuddled with him. "You had no idea that all of this would happen. You were simply trying to protect the world."
She wished she could view it the way that he did. She wished she'd had nothing to do with this.
Naturally, Jedda had been searching her mind for solutions. She knew that Hadea wanted her for a daughter. Maybe she could infiltrate the woman's court. Maybe she could try to form a bond with Hadea, then take the necklace away somehow.
"Dynak," Flash said, all of a sudden. "What's April's status?"
Dynak was now on a smaller screen. "April Gordon is safe. She remains on-course."
"And what have you learned about this team abroad?"
Dynak put a picture of a group on-screen, five young women, as well as a girl with pink hair, all in colorful gear. "They are known as the Sailor Guardians."
