Sailor Moon Defenders

Chapter Five: At Your Side

Princess Jedda dropped onto her knees, taking her place by Hadea's throne. She studied the dress resting over her legs, then straightened the crown nestled in her hair. She and Hadea were alone for now, but they had a meeting with the nobles planned. It was the first one that she'd attend, the one in which she would be introduced. She had to look good for Hadea's sake.

She'd never expected all this last night. She was now a member of a royal court. She'd only come here for the queen's affection  and Hadea offered her a lot of that. But the woman gave her a title as well. Jedda was an actual princess now.

She wouldn't be pampered all day, however. She was expected to help the cause; Jedda had responsibilities. She'd be the face of Hadea's court, someone who'd speak on the queen's behalf, often in statements broadcast from here.

A sight in the room dragged her from her thoughts. She eyed the monitor they'd viewed last night, the one with surveillance of alien worlds. It was now showing her the local city. She was surprised by the scenes downtown. "Children are going out to school again."

Kids were walking by with their backpacks on — younger kids, and teens like her — all of them dressed in identical gear: the brown uniform of the Netherworld.

Hadea nodded. "They're going to be taught how the new world works."

She pondered the term that Hadea just used. It was a brand new world indeed. Jedda didn't have all the details yet, but she knew that the changes were beyond cosmetic. Hadea had altered so many things: the world government, technology, agriculture, currency.

The queen continued. "My teachers have finished educating adults. Now the world's children must learn as well  whether they're human, or from my land. They will graduate when they reach Stage Seven. Then they shall commit to society, just as their parents are beginning to. That is the Netherworld way of life."

Jedda considered the new system. Why was everybody so opposed to this? It wasn't like Earth had become Mongo. People weren't being tormented and hurt. They were just going about with their lives.

She thought of a rumor that she'd heard all year. "Mother…" She paused. "Is it true that countries are being combined?"

"It is." Hadea held her gaze on the screen. "America and Canada are one land now, governed by a woman whom I have appointed. I've removed the borders from other lands too. They will receive new leaders soon."

Jedda found herself quite intrigued by this. "What will these leaders be referred to as?"

"Each of them will carry the title of Queen. I will hold the title of Empress soon." She smiled at Jedda. "You may become a land's queen in time. I sense that you have the ability."

Jedda shivered. She doubted that.

Then she realized what Hadea was doing, why she'd been bringing these lands together. It was her way of promoting peace, a means of creating more unity.

Jedda quieted. She liked the idea. She wished that the people out there did too.

Jedda watched Hadea ease down in the water, both of them bathing in a darkened room. The queen's hair was tightened in a cute blonde bun; she even looked nice at normal times like this.

Hadea found a spot right across from Jedda. "Tell me about her," she said gently. "Tell me about your birth mother."

Jedda paused, then heaved a sigh. "I just know she left when I was really young."

Hadea stared. "Did that seem fair?"

Jedda glanced off, shaking her head. She thought of the times when she'd needed a mom: the days when her dad was away on quests, the moments when he wasn't sensitive enough, the nights when she'd longed for a woman's embrace.

"What of your father?" Hadea asked. "What was he like in your younger years?"

"He's a good dad, but a part-time one. He could never really commit to me."

Hadea's stare softened. "And did that seem fair?"

Jedda eyed the water. "No," she said. She wasn't dismissing his accomplishments. She knew that her father had done great things, but she wished he'd had more time for her.

"The Phantom legacy," Hadea continued. "Tell me about your place in that."

"I'm supposed to follow in his footsteps."

"Is that what you want?"

She paused again. "No…" she admitted. "But I don't have a choice."

Hadea leaned forward. "You do," she murmured. "From now on, Jedda, you have a choice. You have a mother. You have a parent who's committed to you. Confide in me about whatever you wish. I will be available whenever you need." The queen offered Jedda a comforting smile.

Jedda felt her face growing warm again. She sensed that the tears would be coming soon. Being a princess was quite surreal  but being a daughter would mean much more.

And she was beginning to feel like one.

Jedda eyed a wall as she lay on the bed. She felt Hadea's fingers playing with her hair.

"I want all the fighting to end," Jedda said, "but I can't tell you where New Monitor is. I can't trust your men not to harm my friends."

"It's all right," Hadea whispered. "I didn't bring you here to learn that at all."

Jedda was deeply grateful for that.

"In any event, once the Defenders know where you are, they'll leave New Monitor anyway. They'll worry that I'll pry the location from you." She kissed Jedda's cheek. "I never would, though."

Jedda eased down on Hadea's throne, charmed by the feeling of power it brought.

A teen Netherworlder came into the room, sporting gold armor as he carried a helmet. His dark hair was styled in wavy bangs.

"Oh," Jedda said. "Hello, Captain." She seriously hoped she wasn't blushing right now.

"Tristan, Highness." He nodded at her. "You can always use my given name."

"Tristan," she said, shaking a bit, just as she had when they'd met earlier.

He knelt before her, and took her hand. "I have to head off on assignment now, but if you require anything at all, contact me, and your needs will be met." He kissed her hand, holding her gaze.

Jedda felt tingles over both bare feet. A part of her was glad that he hadn't kissed those, like the other knights in the palace had done. The gesture from Tristan would have made her melt.

Tristan rose, then left the room.

She watched the spot where he'd exited. Then she sighed, turning away, thinking of a boy with short blond hair.

Juban  10:30 pm

Rick watched the stars from a dark hallway, one of several halls in the new home base. The fort was small, nondescript; it looked the same as any tiny castle. Hadea likely wasn't going to find them here.

Monitor 3, as they called it now, had a common room on the highest floor, with many smaller ones on the floors below. Weapons and computers were strewn about  the ones they'd flown from New Monitor.

Dynak had recorded Jedda's late-night walk, along with the moment when she'd disappeared. If Hadea had Jedda with her now, then New Monitor might have been exposed. As a precaution, they'd left that base.

Rick heard the sound of a sliding door. He glanced to his right. Ami was there, donned in a blueish, silken gown.

"Oh…" she uttered, holding in place. "Hi," she whispered.

"Hey," he said. He turned away.

"Are you all right?"

He sighed and looked at the stars again. "I've got this weird destiny, it seems."

"What do you mean?" She stood beside him.

"I keep losing all the women in my life. First my mother. Then my sister. And Jedda now." He frowned at that.

"But April's here."

"Sort of…" he said. "We're not as connected as we used to be. She severed our bond when she went away." He wanted to believe they could reconnect.

"You don't know that you've lost Jedda, though."

"You saw the recording." He eyed the floor. "It looked like she the left the base willingly. She went to Hadea because she wanted to." He recalled the dreams Jedda told him about. He'd never expected her to act on them.

"Perhaps she'll be back," Ami offered.

"I'm not so sure she'd be welcomed back. We had to fly out here because of her. And the guys think Jedda's abandoned them." He certainly felt she'd abandoned him.

Ami's voice dropped. "Can I do anything?"

He shrugged a tad. "I think I just needed to rant a bit." He looked at her. "Sorry if I got a little too wound up. You didn't deserve all this whining of mine."

"Forget it." She shrugged. "You listened to me when I needed an ear."

"Yeah," he recalled, smiling a bit. "And I'm here anytime you need to talk again."

"Thanks." She grinned, going silent a moment. "You're sure you're okay?"

"I am," he uttered.

Ami stepped forth and extended her arms.

Rick reached out and brought her in for a hug.

Afterward, he eyed her closely while holding her  and Rick felt a warmth flowing into his heart, a level of peace as he touched her skin. Ami was caring, smart, and sweet. And she was so tender and soft right now. He found that he didn't want to let her go. He'd come to enjoy working with this girl. He'd come to adore talking with her too. Regardless of what the activity was, he simply enjoyed their time together.

Ami looked surprised for a second or two, as though she could sense what he felt at present. She didn't seem upset in the least bit, though. She wrapped her fingers around Rick's arms.

Silence endured as they eyed each other.

He leaned toward her, and they slowly kissed.

Moments later, they pulled away. Rick was shaking. So was she. She appeared as smitten as him right now.

He cleared his throat. "I, uh… I…" He straightened himself. "I'll see you tomorrow." Rick turned around and walked into his room.

Soon afterward, he heard Ami's door slide shut again.

Rick took a deep breath as he looked at the clock which read 6 am. He and the others had woken up an hour earlier. It was primarily at his insistence, as well as the Phantom's that they find Jedda, at least to determine what was going on with her. Maybe she really wanted to be with Hadea. Maybe this was a bad idea. But that was a chance that he was willing to take, and evidently so was the Phantom.

"I can't believe that we are doing this!" April exclaimed behind him. Startled, he turned around to see his sister glancing at him as she appeared to be frustrated.

"You know why we're doing this," Rick stated, "The Phantom also insisted on this as well."

"True, but we both know that Jedda went willingly to Hadea," April retorted. "I don't get why you are willing to waste your time with this. What if Jedda wants to stay at the Netherworld?"

"It's called taking a chance," a voice answered. He and April looked to see Chibiusa holding Diana. Usagi was also at the scene holding Luna and Minako was holding Artemis while Mamoru, Ami, Makoto and Rei were also in tow.

"Luna is right," Rei spoke up. "I may not agree with this situation but I think you and the Phantom make a fair point in wanting to do this. Even if Jedda wants to stay with Hadea in the Netherworld, we have to take a chance."

"Besides, it might be our best bet to stopping Queen Hadea once and for all." Makoto added.

"I can agree there," Artemis chimed in.

Rick shared a small smile, thankful that the Sailor Guardians were at least willing to take this chance. He was also thankful to the Phantom for agreeing with him as Jedda was his daughter.

He looked to see his father, the Phantom, Mandrake, Lothar, LJ and Kshin arriving at the scene as well and knew that it was time for action.

"Is everyone ready?" Flash asked. "The Terry is ready to go."

Rick saw that Mamoru and the Sailor Guardians looked as if they were anticipating this moment: the moment where they faced off against Queen Hadea.

"It looks like we are about to face Queen Hadea." Usagi stated.

"And hopefully we will be able to put an end to her reign once and for all." Rei added.

"About time," Makoto quipped.

"Kshin, I want you to stay here at Monitor 3," Mandrake told his adopted son.

"I know," Kshin replied. "So I can be safe."

Rick could tell he was one of the few who didn't have any interest in seeing Jedda after everything that had happened.

"You too, April," Flash said.

"What?!" April uttered in annoyance.

"You haven't really known Hadea for that long and you are capable to protect Kshin and the cats while here." Flash calmly explained.

April glanced over at Rick and whispered. "I know that Dad isn't making you stay here because he knows you want to rescue your precious Jedda."

"Don't mean to be contradicting but we cats can handle ourselves," Artemis spoke up.

"But don't worry. We will handle things here at Monitor 3," Luna added.

"That's right." Diana nodded in agreement.

"Okay. For the rest of us, let's get going," Flash told the rest of them.

The Defenders and the Sailor Guardians made their way to where the Terry was waiting for them.

"So this is your ship?" Usagi asked.

"Yep." Rick answered. "This is the Terry and it looks like it is ready to go."

"We better transform and quick." Usagi suggested.

"Mercury Crystal power…"

"Mars Crystal power…"

"Juipter Crystal power…"

"Venus Crystal power…"

"Moon Crisis…"

"Make Up!"

Rick watched in amazement as the six girls transformed into their Sailor Guardian forms. Now he knew that they were ready for action.

"We're ready to go!" Usagi declared.

"Not without us, you're not," said an unfamiliar voice.

"Looks like you guys could use some help," a second strange voice added.

"Who said that?!" Rick asked cautiously.

He and the others looked to see a small group of rose petals fall down as the wind blew in the air. Moments later, three women in the same gear as the Sailor Guardians appeared.

The girl with sandy blonde hair moved first. "Protected by Uranus, the planet of the heavens, I am Sailor Uranus, Guardian of Flight!"

Then the girl with wavy blue-green hair motioned. "Protected by Neptune, the planet of the Deep sea, I am Sailor Neptune, Guardian of Embracement!"

Finally, the girl with long green hair stepped forth. "Protected by Pluto, the planet of space-time, I am Sailor Pluto, the Guardian of Revolution!"

Rick watched with amazement as the three new girls introduced themselves as Sailor Pluto continued talking, "Answering the call to a new threat, the three Guardians of the Outer planets…"

"Are here to fight for this world!" all three girls exclaimed in unison.

"Uranus!" Makoto exclaimed in surprise.

"Neptune!" Rei added.

"Pluto!" Minako added as well.

Rick was amazed that these girls knew one another, and he was amazed that there was so many Sailor Guardians from what he could see.

"There's more of them?" Flash asked in surprise.

"Mind if we join the party?" Sailor Uranus asked.

"Certainly," Mandrake answered. "The more, the merrier."

"It'll be fun," Sailor Neptune chimed cheerfully. The third Outer Guardian nodded while sharing a giggle.

"We even brought a guest with us," Sailor Uranus announced as she, Neptune and Pluto cleared the area to reveal a fourth girl, who was a young girl in purple holding what appeared to be a glaive in her hands. From what Rick could tell, it appeared to be a girl that the Inner Guardians as well as Mamoru thought they would never see again.

Usagi gasped in surprise.

"That's impossible!" Mamoru exclaimed.

"You're…" Chibiusa started to say.

The girl in purple garb step forth. "Protected by Saturn, the planet of Silence, I am the Guardian of Ruin and Rebirth, Sailor Saturn!"

"It's Hotaru!" Chibiusa exclaimed happily.

"She came along with Haruka, Michiru and Setsuna!" Usagi added.

"Hello there," Hotaru greeted the group.

"Glad you ladies could come along with us," Mandrake told the Outer Guardians.

"So what have you been up to all this time?" LJ quipped as he crossed his arms.

"We will explain on the way to the Netherworld," Haruka answered.

"That sounds like a plan," Rick replied, interested in the Outer Guardians as well.

Scene Commentary:

She'd never expected all this last night. She was now a member of a royal court. She'd only come here for the queen's affection  and Hadea offered her a lot of that. But the woman gave her a title as well. Jedda was an actual princess now.

She wouldn't be pampered all day, however. She was expected to help the cause; Jedda had responsibilities. She'd be the face of Hadea's court, someone who'd speak on the queen's behalf, often in statements broadcast from here.

This is a fascinating moment here with Jedda. It's interesting to see Jedda having to help Hadea in her cause, and this is a good take here.

A sight in the room dragged her from her thoughts. She eyed the monitor they'd viewed last night, the one with surveillance of alien worlds. It was now showing her the local city. She was surprised by the scenes downtown. "Children are going out to school again."

Kids were walking by with their backpacks on  younger kids, and teens like her  all of them dressed in identical gear: the brown uniform of the Netherworld.

Hadea nodded. "They're going to be taught how the new world works."

That's a good scenario here as well. While we have the rebels against Hadea's regime, we also have those who are serving her and learning how the new world works. Everything has changed indeed.

Jedda considered the new system. Why was everybody so opposed to this? It wasn't like Earth had become Mongo. People weren't being tormented and hurt. They were just going about with their lives.

Interesting to see Jedda taking the new system into consideration here. It's so true that Hadea is nothing like Ming and she wants to make things better. I wonder…

Looks as if I'm going to rethink on one of the groups and where they will be at during this arc.

I also like the conflict going on in Jedda's mind of her being unsure if she had the ability to be a queen.

I like how Jedda was talking of her parents, explaining to Hadea on what they were like, and her conflict regarding the Phantom legacy.

This is a nice little scene here with Tristan the Netherworlder guard. I recognized him from James's story DOE: Retold as a love interest for Jedda. This might be an infatuation here but still a great scene here nonetheless.

She watched the spot where he'd exited. Then she sighed, turning away, thinking of a boy with blond hair.

This was a good little part where Jedda was thinking of Rick. It seems in the near future, there will be more than just thinking on her part.

That was a good call there. It's best to be safe than sorry as the Defenders moved to Juban as I trust they weren't going to take any chances, especially when it came to Hadea.

"Perhaps she'll be back," Ami offered.

"I'm not so sure she'd be welcomed back. We had to fly out here because of her. And the guys think Jedda's abandoned them." He certainly felt she'd abandoned him.

A part of this scene reminds me a bit of Dynasties except April wasn't in that story, and eventually, Rick will get Jedda back. It might be a challenge to the heroes to welcome Jedda back afterwards, but hopefully they would.

This was another lovely scene between Ami and Rick. Almost reminds me of the interaction between Jedda and LJ in DOE Retold, sort of.

"Besides, it might be our best bet to stopping Queen Hadea once and for all," Makoto added.

"I can agree there," Artemis couldn't help but to chime in.

I figured April wouldn't be too happy with Jedda apparently abandoning the heroes and grilling on her brother's case about it, even though the Phantom insisted on this mission as well. The Sailor Guardians agree that they should be willing to take a chance with this mission, even if Jedda does want to stay at the Netherworld with Hadea.

"You haven't really known Hadea for that long and you are capable to protect Kshin and the cats while here," Flash calmly explained.

"That's right," Diana nodded in agreement.

"Okay. For the rest of us, let's get going," Flash told the rest of them.

I am aware that Kshin fought on Mongo during Hadea's reign in the early chapters of Dynasties. However, this was my intent on him staying put. I think he is one of those who aren't in a hurry to see Jedda just yet anyways.

Same with April, I elected her to stay put and she's not in any hurry to see Jedda as mentioned in the previous commentary. She should have said something a little nicer to Rick because it could come back to haunt her later on.

I also note that the cats would naturally assure Flash Gordon that they could handle themselves and that they would handle things.

The girl in purple garb stepped forth.

When the Outer Sailor Guardians introduced themselves, I tried to keep this in Rick's POV as much as possible. I showed what Rick was thinking when the new group of Sailor Guardians arrived to help.
