Sailor Moon Defenders

By AmandaDoE

Chapter Four: Parents and Children

The obstacle course was a giant circle, laden with mountains and sprawling pits. Her dad had completed it at age eleven. Jedda was ten. She'd go one better.

A crowd of villagers had gathered 'round today, parents who were here to observe the race.

The Phantom was crouching in front of her, smiling as he rested his hands on her arms. "I'm going to be here when you win," he said. "The others are good, but they're not you. They don't have the heart of a future Phantom."

Jedda squirmed a bit, then looked away. Why did he have to bring the legacy up? Why did everything have to be about that? Couldn't they simply be father and daughter? Couldn't he love her for who she was, instead of loving who she was going to be?

"I'd better go," she said quietly. She balled her hair into a tidy bun, then straightened her tight brown racing garb.

Jedda walked up to the starting point, crouching with a long line of girls she knew. Her palms were sweaty. Her heart was pounding. She wanted to make her father proud.

"Ready yourselves," Guran said.

Jedda tensed, rising a tad.

Guran pounded a massive drum, and Jedda started running as fast as she could. The other girls sprinted along her sides.

A hard wind bristled against her face, but there was no way it would slow her down. She felt the dirt underneath her soles, and told herself to keep pounding it.

Vines were positioned at a pit up ahead. Jedda grabbed one and launched into the air, clearing a deep mass of water below. She swung her way to the opposite cliff, then hit the ground running and tore through the woods. A girl on her left got the lead on her. Then another kid on her right sped by. No way, she thought. I can't lose this. Her father was home from his many quests. She had a chance to impress him now.

She tightened her fists, and increased her speed, passing both girls as she pushed herself. Her hair came loose. She didn't care. She nicked her shoulder. It mattered not. Absolutely nothing would sway her course. She was going to reach that finish line. She was going to make her father proud.

Once this was over, once she won, he would finally come to appreciate her  not as a student, just as a daughter.

Several more obstacles were laying ahead. She charged up hills, swam through rapids, and made her way across muddy pits.

Finally, the finish neared.

A number of villagers were cheering her on. Her arms were tired. Her legs were sore. A couple of rivals got ahead of her.

Jedda took a gulp, then ran harder. Keep going… Keep going… she told herself.

She passed her opponents, gritted her teeth, and finally made her way over the line.

The race was over. She had won.

A burst of applause came out of the group. She panted in place as she held her knees.

"Very good job," Chief Guran said.

She coughed her reply. "Thank you," she muttered. Jedda ran her gaze through the bustling crowd, searching for the face that she wanted to see. "Where… is…"

He stroked her back. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "A matter arose. The Phantom had to leave on emergency."

She froze in place, eyeing the ground. She found that she wasn't all that surprised.

She noted the term that Guran had used. Not your father, not even Kit. He'd called her dad by his heroic name. And that was who Kit Walker was: a Phantom first, a father second.

She turned her head to the other kids, all of whom were hugged by their moms and dads.

The Present

Jedda walked into Control Room 2. Her father was sitting at a table alone. "Hi," she murmured.

"Hi," he said, straightening a bit as he studied her.

She needed some father-and-daughter time. "Do you have a minute?" She'd whispered purposely. The low voice would emphasize her seriousness.

"Actually… Mandrake and I have a meeting planned. We need to discuss a new strategy. I'll be a tad busy."

She shook her head. "Of course you will." Jedda turned around and walked back to the door.

"Wait… What do you mean by that?"

"Never mind, Father." She exited.

Rick watched in awe as she toiled away. Could the girl succeed where he'd always failed?

"I think I've got it," Ami muttered, tightening a screw on a gray headset. She put the driver down, connected two wires, then pressed a button on the helmet's rear. Lights on the headset began to flash. The teleshield was finally functional.

"No way," Rick said, utterly stunned. "I've tried forever to make that work."

Ami responded with a humble smile, sitting on the floor with her legs at her right. She sported a sweater and loose black pants, shoes cast aside as she wriggled her toes. "Your team has some very impressive tools."

"Ours are nothing compared to yours." Rick eased down in the spot beside her. "I love all the Sailor technology."

"I was impressed by how well you knew it." Ami looked a tad curious. "Who taught you the ins and outs of mechanics?"

"Mostly my mom… and then my dad."

Her bright grin shrank. "Where is your mom?" she gently asked. It seemed she had an idea already.

Rick looked down, then calmly spoke. "A few years ago…" He quieted.

Ami paused, then found her voice. "I'm very sorry."

"Thanks," he uttered. A few seconds later, he faced her again. "What about yours?"

She frowned a tad. "She and I had something of a rift."

Rick recoiled in a bit of surprise.

"She's a swimmer, and I am too  but my first love is technology." Her voice dropped a little. "My mom's always been disappointed by that. She wanted me to follow in her footsteps."

Rick hesitated, treading lightly. "Where is she now? Your mom, I mean." Why had he added the obvious?

"We were separated when the world was changed. We haven't seen each other for around a year." She turned to him. "What's the last thing that you said to your mom?"

He squirmed a bit. "We were separated amidst a battle. I think I said 'I'll come back for you.' I just wanted her to know that I cared."

She brushed a hand through her pretty hair. "I wish I'd said something like that to mine… but the two of us parted in anger instead." She eyed the floor rather somberly.

"Ami…" Rick said, touching her shoulder.

Jedda stood watching at the distant door. Ami and Rick hadn't noticed her yet. Rick had spent most of the day with Ami. He'd spent yesterday with that girl as well.

He'd probably do the very same thing tomorrow. They seemed to be having a blast with their toys.

She turned around and shut the door behind her, marching in a huff down the quiet hall.

" Jedda."

The voice came within her sleep, just as it had for the past few nights. The tone was soft, inquisitive  a gentle whisper, a tender call.

" Jedda?"

The voice roused her awake. She eyed a wall of her darkened room, head on her pillow as she lay in place.

" Can you hear me?" the voice continued. This wasn't a dream. It was real. Someone was using telepathy. It wasn't a teammate, but someone else. The voice belonged to an outsider. But how could anyone reach her down here? Even telepathy had its limits.

" I can," she answered. "But how exactly?"

" Your bond with the necklace linked you to me."

Jedda twitched. Could it be her?

She rose in bed and sat on her side, pulling her white nightgown in place. She'd heard the call last month as well. She'd also heard it in the previous ones. The woman was gentle, but she was persistent. Perhaps it was time to find out why. Jedda breathed, licking her lips. "What is it that you want from me?"

"I want you to rise and leave your bed." The woman's voice was softer now.

Jedda paused, then got to her feet. "All right," she answered, quietly.

" Exit the base. Go outside. I can't transport you until you do. I have to detect your physical form."

She tensed a bit. "Transport me?"

" Jedda…" she said. "Don't be afraid. Do you know what I want most right now, what I desire above all else? More than planets? More than power? More than this necklace upon my chest? To be the parent you've always needed. To be the mother whom you deserve."

Jedda stirred as the words sank in. Someone was finally committed to her.

But did she want this from Queen Hadea? Could she actually trust the woman? Hadea had never done Jedda harm, and she'd never harmed the Defenders either. Yes, she'd conquered the galaxy, but her motivations seemed different than Ming's. Hadea wasn't cruel or power-hungry. The queen showed signs of a gentler side.

Why had she conquered the galaxy? No one ever bothered to question that. All people did was oppose her rule. But was her rule such a terrible thing?

" Exit the base," the voice continued. "Go outside."

She paused again, then left her room. Moments later, she reached the surface. A gentle wind played with her gown. She shook in place, skeptical.

Suddenly, she felt quite odd. She got a dank feeling inside her frame. Then a strange light enveloped her.

The weird light faded. Jedda shook. She was now standing in a beautiful place  like a throne room in a storybook. Apparently, she'd been teleported. It was a jarring experience. First she was there, now she was here. Only a couple of seconds had passed. She kept on twitching as she calmed herself.

The floor was marble. The walls were gold. A strip of red carpet led up to a throne. And on that throne was Queen Hadea, the loveliest woman she'd ever seen. The queen wore an ivory, sparkling dress, her golden curls nestled on the left. The Necklace of Oros sat on her chest. A crown was present upon her head, and a long scepter rested in her hand.

They were alone in the shady room.

Hadea leaned her head to the side a bit. "Come to me, daughter," she said gently.

Jedda beheld her in utter awe. The queen had a presence like no one else, an aura that screamed magnificence. Jedda had been around village chiefs. She had even met some presidents. None of them stunned her like Queen Hadea. This was the woman who ruled them all, the woman who ruled the whole galaxy.

Do what she said, she thought suddenly, rousing herself from her entranced state.

Jedda straightened up, then moved her legs, trying to walk without stumbling. She stopped just short of Hadea's throne, then dropped to her knees and eased onto her stomach, inching her arms toward the woman's feet. From what she'd seen, this was the way to greet royalty, and Jedda couldn't help but assume the pose. It seemed like the natural thing to do  not just because Queen Hadea was noble, but because of what she had offered Jedda: something she'd wanted nearly all her life.

"Rise, daughter."

Jedda did.

Standing herself, Hadea placed a crown upon Jedda's head, then ran her hands along Jedda's cheeks. "From this day on, you are Princess Jedda."

Jedda flinched. Princess Jedda? She was an actual royal now? That was going to take some time to sink in.

"Welcome home." Hadea smiled.

Jedda felt a tear rolling down her cheek. She took a step forth and embraced her mother.

Jedda stood by the queen, who was seated again. Hadea was eyeing a video screen, one that descended on her command.

"Woo koon izy e," Hadea said, speaking in a language Jedda hadn't heard.

The man on the screen was an alien, a bald-headed king with purple skin. Besides his crown, he wore the same garment as Hadea's troops, the brown shirt strapped over one of his shoulders. Everyone dressed that way these days everyone across the whole galaxy, save for the rebels who opposed Hadea.

"Woo koon izy e," Hadea repeated, tapping her fingers on an arm of her chair.

The man stirred a bit. "Ah. Ila! No, no ka!"

Hadea nodded. "Ta lo fa." The image faded, replaced by stars. Hadea had a view of outer space, it seemed. The queen fiddled with a handheld remote.

A series of images appeared on-screen. First an orange planet, then a green one, then a blue world Jedda recognized. "Planet Mongo," she slowly muttered. The image disappeared. A white world arrived. Then she saw a view of a small throne room. Moments later, a gray-skinned queen got onto her knees, staring directly at Queen Hadea.

"Ie no bin, Impriss," the queen blurted out. One of her words sounded like empress.

Hadea nodded at her. "Alen te ga?"

"Ima. Ima. So resno min."

"Brese ga," Hadea replied. The screen went black. Hadea stood. She'd finished calling people for now, it seemed.

Jedda was stunned as she eyed Hadea. The woman really did rule the galaxy. Royals everywhere were commanded by her. "Can I ask what you said?"

"Of course," she uttered. "I was making sure they enforced my laws. Netherworld laws are galactic laws. My way of life is everyone's way now. That is the reason I've conquered planets, because I believe that my way is best."

Jedda looked down as the words sank in. What if certain people didn't like her laws? Clearly, some people on Earth did not.

Jedda glanced around in the room again, thinking about what she'd done tonight. She was terrified of what tomorrow would bring. Would the Defenders view her as a traitor? Would they understand why she'd come to this place? She wanted so much for the battles to end.

"Are you all right?" Hadea touched Jedda's shoulder.

Jedda looked up. "I'm fine," she said. She reached out and hugged Hadea again, hoping that the galaxy would find peace soon.

Hadea sat watching as Jedda slept, sporting a gown like her daughter's own. She smiled while massaging Jedda's soft bare feet, then crawled up and pulled the girl into her arms.

The child was tender, delicate. Hadea felt a warmth as she held her close. She'd spent so long bogged down in strife. It was nice to finally have some peace, and it was great to share that peace with Jedda. From what she'd seen, Jedda was a sweet and noble child. She wanted so much to get to know her better.

Zorelda had told her that this would happen; she'd looked in the future, foreseeing it. Hadea had been skeptical at times; she'd wondered if the witch was deceiving her. But sure enough, it'd come to pass. Perhaps she could trust in Zorelda's word.

Hadea was going to wed the Phantom next. The thought of that filled her with utter joy. She didn't know when that day would come; she'd probably have to end the battles first.

Hadea put the thought of conflict away. She wanted to focus on the present now. She felt Jedda's toes resting on her own, and placed a kiss on the girl's forehead.

She had her princess. She had her daughter  and she would never, ever lose her again.

Scene Commentary:

He stroked her back. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "A matter arose. The Phantom had to leave on emergency."

She froze in place, eyeing the ground. She found that she wasn't all that surprised.

She noted the term that Guran had used. Not your father, not even Kit . He'd called her dad by his heroic name. And that was who Kit Walker was: a Phantom first, a father second.

She turned her head to the other kids, all of whom were hugged by their moms and dads.

I'm liking how we get a glimpse into Jedda's childhood in the Bandar Village. I figured that she would have situations like this where the Phantom would put his duty first and being a father second. I gathered that Phantom, Lothar and Flash Gordon in particular would put their respective duties first and being fathers second. Majorly the Phantom and possibly Lothar and Flash Gordon. Just a note.

This is a pretty good example on the Phantom putting duty before his daughter.

"Ours are nothing compared to yours." Rick eased down in the spot beside her. "I love all the Sailor technology."

I love the interaction between Ami and Rick here. I knew that I was going to have interactions between those two given the fact that they are both geniuses. There will possibly be more interactions with those two in future storylines. As teammates and friends.

"I was impressed by how well you knew it." Ami looked a tad curious. "Who taught you the ins and outs of mechanics?"

"Mostly my mom… and then my dad."

Her bright grin shrank. "Where is your mom?" she gently asked. It seemed she had an idea already.

She brushed a hand through her pretty hair. "I wish I'd said something like that to mine… but the two of us parted in anger instead." She eyed the floor rather somberly.

"Ami…" Rick said, touching her shoulder.

This is a sweet little chat here when Ami and Rick were talking about their mothers and what had happened to them.

The scene also had me to fix a scene from the previous chapter regarding Usagi's parents and brother Shingo (Sammy in the North American English dub) and Rei's grandpa and Yuuichirou (Chad in the North American English dub) from the shrine. I assumed Usagi and Rei had been separated from them when Hadea changed Earth under her ruling.

Side note, it goes without saying that apparently DiC has done Sailor Moon dirty. Or not, depending on if one feels nostalgic about the DiC/Cloverway dubs in North America. It was my childhood after all.

I am thinking that this would be a natural conflict between Rick and Jedda regarding this situation, given how Rick put his team first in Dynasties in the earlier chapters.

"Can you hear me?" the voice continued. This wasn't a dream. It was real. Someone was using telepathy. It wasn't a teammate, but someone else. The voice belonged to an outsider. But how could anyone reach her down here? Even telepathy had its limits.

"I can," she answered. "But how exactly?"

"Your bond with the necklace linked you to me."

Jedda twitched. Could it be her ?

This I could imagine happening here. Jedda originally obtained the Necklace of Oros after all, and Hadea would end up obtaining it as well.

"Jedda…" she said. "Don't be afraid. Do you know what I want most right now, what I desire above all else? More than planets? More than power? More than this necklace upon my chest? To be the parent you've always needed. To be the mother whom you deserve."

Jedda stirred as the words sank in. Someone was finally committed to her.

I like this scene here where Jedda feels affection that she hasn't been feeling from her father or her boyfriend. There's something about this that touches me. I just can't describe it.

Unlike in Dynasties, Jedda appeared to be willing to come to Hadea. I couldn't help but to notice that in this scene. The reaction to her transport is natural as well.

It seemed like the natural thing to do  not just because Queen Hadea was noble, but because of what she had offered Jedda: something she'd wanted nearly all her life.

Such a lovely scene here. I can see Jedda be admired by Hadea, especially given she has always wanted a mother in her life.

This was such a sweet scene there. Princess Jedda sounds lovely here. In the future, she could be standing in as Queen of Netherworld when Hadea ends up becoming Empress, with Rick as her consort. I had that idea come across my mind with a couple of my friends awhile back and they gave me ideas, and it's possible that Rick and Jedda might be engaged by this point. Only time will tell.

This was quite interesting with the strange language that was in this scene. I also like the conflict that Jedda is going through in this scene.

Zorelda had told her that this would happen; she'd looked in the future, foreseeing it. Hadea had been skeptical at times; she'd wondered if the witch was deceiving her. But sure enough, it'd come to pass. Perhaps she could trust in Zorelda's word.

She had her princess. She had her daughter  and she would never, ever lose her again.

I thought the interaction between Jedda and Hadea in this scene and where the latter gave her daughter a foot massage was beautiful to read.

I also sense a little bit of foreshadowing with this bit here in regards to Zorelda and the Phantom in particular. However, with the latter, I'm not gonna spoil it.
